Honeycomb Layered Oxides With Silver Atom Bilayers and Emergence of Non-Abelian SU(2) Interactions

Honeycomb layered oxides with monovalent or divalent, monolayered cationic lattices generally exhibit myriad crystalline features encompassing rich electrochemistry, geometries and disorders, which particularly places them as attractive material candidates for next-generation energy storage applications. Herein, we report global honeycomb layered oxide compositions, ${\rm Ag_2}M_2{\rm TeO_6}$ ($M = \rm Ni, Mg, \textit{etc}.$) exhibiting $\rm Ag$ atom bilayers with sub-valent states within Ag-rich crystalline domains of ${\rm Ag_6}M_2{\rm TeO_6}$ and $\rm Ag$-deficient domains of ${\rm Ag}_{2 - x}\rm Ni_2TeO_6$ ($0 < x < 2$). The $\rm Ag$-rich material characterised by aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy reveals local atomic structural disorders characterised by aperiodic stacking and incoherency in the bilayer arrangement of $\rm Ag$ atoms. Meanwhile, the global material not only displays high ionic conductivity, but also manifests oxygen-hole electrochemistry during silver-ion extraction. Within the $\rm Ag$-rich domains, the bilayered structure, argentophilic interactions therein and the expected $\rm Ag$ sub-valent states ($1/2+, 2/3+, \textit{etc}.$) are theoretically understood via spontaneous symmetry breaking of SU($2$)$\times$U($1$) gauge symmetry interactions amongst $3$ degenerate mass-less chiral fermion states, justified by electron occupancy of silver $4d_{z^2}$ and $5s$ orbitals on a bifurcated honeycomb lattice. This implies that bilayered frameworks have research applications that go beyond the confines of energy storage.

Phonons and Stability of Infinite-Layer Iron Oxides SrFeO2 and CaFeO2

We present detailed ab-initio lattice dynamical analysis of the Fe-O infinite-layer compounds CaFeO2 and SrFeO2 in various magnetic configurations. These indicate strong spin-phonon coupling in SrFeO2 in contrast to that in case of CaFeO2. Powder neutron inelastic scattering experiments on SrFeO2 have also been performed at temperatures from 5 K to 353 K in the antiferromagnetic phase and analyzed using the ab-initio calculations. These suggest distortion of the ideal infinite planer structure above 300 K. From our ab-initio calculations in SrFeO2 as a function of volume, we suggest that the distortion in SrFeO2 above 300 K is similar to that known in CaFeO2 at ambient conditions. The distortion of the planer structure of CaFeO2 involves doubling of the planer unit cell that may be usually expected to be due to a soft phonon mode at the M-point (1/2 1/2 0). However, our ab-initio calculations show quite unusually that all the M-point (1/2 1/2 0) phonons are stable, but two stable M3+ and M2-modes anharmonically couple with an unstable Bu mode at the zone centre and lead to the cell doubling and the distorted structure. Magnetic exchange interactions in both the compounds have been computed on the basis of the ideal planar structure (P4/mmm space group) and with increasing amplitude of the Bu phonon mode. These reveal that the magnetic exchange interactions reduce significantly with increasing distortion. We have extended the ab-initio phonon calculation to high pressures, which reveal that, above 20 GPa of pressure, the undistorted planer CaFeO2 becomes dynamically stable. We also report computed phonon spectra in SrFeO3 that has a cubic structure, which is useful to understand the role of the difference in geometry of oxygen atoms around the Fe atom with respect to planer SrFeO2.

Random Fan-Out State Induced by Site-Random Interlayer Couplings

We study the low-temperature properties of a classical Heisenberg model with site-random interlayer couplings on the cubic lattice. This model is introduced as a simplified effective model of Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)O$_2$, which was recently synthesized. In this material, when $x=0.3$, $(πππ)$ and $(π\pi0)$ mixed ordering is observed by neutron diffraction measurements. By Monte Carlo simulations, we find an exotic bulk spin structure that explains the experimentally obtained results. We name this spin structure the "random fan-out state". The mean-field calculations provide an intuitive understanding of this phase being induced by the site-random interlayer couplings. Since Rietveld analysis assuming the random fan-out state agrees well with the neutron diffraction pattern of Sr(Fe$_{0.7}$Mn$_{0.3}$)O$_2$, we conclude that the random fan-out state is reasonable for the spin-ordering pattern of Sr(Fe$_{0.7}$Mn$_{0.3}$)O$_2$ at the low-temperature phase.
