Heat flow in InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires

The transfer of heat between electrons and phonons plays a key role for thermal management in future nanowire-based devices, but only a few experimental measurements of electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling in nanowires are available. Here, we combine experimental temperature measurements on an InAs/InP heterostructure nanowire system with finite element modeling (FEM) to extract information on heat flow mediated by e-ph coupling. We find that the electron and phonon temperatures in our system are highly coupled even at temperatures as low as 2 K. Additionally, we find evidence that the usual power-law temperature dependence of electron-phonon coupling may not correctly describe the coupling in nanowires and show that this result is consistent with previous research on similar one-dimensional electron systems. We also compare the strength of the observed e-ph coupling to a theoretical analysis of e-ph interaction in InAs nanowires, which predicts a significantly weaker coupling strength than observed experimentally.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Carrier Multiplication in Quantum Dots

A quantum-kinetic approach to the ultrafast dynamics of carrier multiplication in semiconductor quantum dots is presented. We investigate the underlying dynamics in the electronic subband occupations and the time-resolved optical emission spectrum, focusing on the interplay between the light-matter and the Coulomb interaction. We find a transition between qualitatively differing behaviors of carrier multiplication, which is controlled by the ratio of the interaction induced time scale and the pulse duration of the exciting light pulse. On short time scales, i.e., before intra-band relaxation, this opens the possibility of detecting carrier multiplication without refering to measurements of (multi-)exciton lifetimes.

Fidelity of Optically Controlled Single- and Two-Qubit Operations on Coulomb-Coupled Quantum Dots

We investigate the effect of the Coulomb interaction on the applicability of quantum gates on a system of two Coulomb-coupled quantum dots. We calculate the fidelity for a single- and a two-qubit gate and the creation of Bell states in the system. The influence of radiative damping is also studied. We find that the application of quantum gates based on the Coulomb interaction leads to significant input state-dependent errors which strongly depend on the Coulomb coupling strength. By optimizing the Coulomb matrix elements via the material and the external field parameters, error rates in the range of $10^{-3}$ can be reached. Radiative dephasing is a more serious problem and typically leads to larger errors on the order of $10^{-2}$ for the considered gates. In the specific case of the generation of a maximally entangled Bell state, error rates in the range of $10^{-3}$ can be achieved even in the presence of radiative dephasing.

Influence of Coulomb correlations on the quantum well intersubband absorption at low temperatures

We present a theory for the intersubband absorption including electronic ground state correlations in a doped GaAs/Al_{35}Ga_{65}As quantum well system. Focusing on the influence of the Coulomb interaction among the carriers at low temperatures, we find that the ground state correlations lead to an increased renormalization and spectral broadening of the absorption spectrum. At T = 1 K, its full width at half maximum is increased by up to a factor 3. The inclusion of electron-phonon scattering strongly reduces the relative impact of the electronic correlations.

Optical control and decoherence of spin qubits in quantum dots

We discuss various methods of all-optical spin control in semiconductor quantum dots. We present different ways of rotating a single confined electron spin by optical coupling to a trion state. We also discuss a method for controlling the polarization of a confined exciton via a two-photon transition. Finally, we analyze the effect of phonon-induced decoherence on the fidelity of these optical spin control protocols.
