Steady waves in flows over periodic bottoms

We study the formation of steady waves in two-dimensional fluids under a current with mean velocity $c$ flowing over a periodic bottom. Using a formulation based on the Dirichlet-Neumann operator, we establish the unique continuation of a steady solution from the trivial solution when a flat bottom is perturbed, except for a sequence of velocities $c_{k}$. The main contribution is the proof that at least two steady solutions exist close to a non-degenerate $S^{1}$-orbit of non-constant steady waves when a flat bottom is perturbed. Consequently, we obtain persistence of at least two steady waves close to a non-degenerate $S^{1}$-orbit of Stokes waves bifurcating from the velocities $c_{k}$.

Continuation of relative equilibria in the $n$--body problem to spaces of constant curvature

We prove that all non-degenerate relative equilibria of the planar Newtonian $n$--body problem can be continued to spaces of constant curvature $κ$, positive or negative, for small enough values of this parameter. We also compute the extension of some classical relative equilibria to curved spaces using numerical continuation. In particular, we extend Lagrange's triangle configuration with different masses to both positive and negative curvature spaces.

Global bifurcation of traveling waves in discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We consider discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations of n sites with periodic boundary conditions. These equations have n branches of standing waves that bifurcate from zero. Traveling waves appear as a symmetry-breaking from the standing waves for different amplitudes. The bifurcation is proved using the global Rabinowitz alternative in subspaces of symmetric functions. As examples, we present applications to the Schrödinger and Saturable lattices.

Global bifurcation of vortex and dipole solutions in Bose-Einstein condensates

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with symmetric harmonic trap is given in (1). Periodic solutions of (1) play an important role in the understanding of the long term behavior of its solutions. In this note we prove the existence of several global branches of solutions to (1) among which there are vortex solutions and dipole solutions.

Traveling and standing waves in coupled pendula and Newton's cradle

The existence of traveling and standing waves is investigated for chains of coupled pendula with periodic boundary conditions. The results are proven by applying topological methods to subspaces of symmetric solutions. The main advantage of this approach comes from the fact that only properties of the linearized forces are required. This allows to cover a wide range of models such as Newton's cradle, the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice and the Toda lattice.
