Sensitivity of spherical gravitational-wave detectors to a stochastic background of non-relativistic scalar radiation

We analyze the signal-to-noise ratio for a relic background of scalar gravitational radiation composed of massive, non-relativistic particles, interacting with the monopole mode of two resonant spherical detectors. We find that the possible signal is enhanced with respect to the differential mode of the interferometric detectors. This enhancement is due to: {\rm (a)} the absence of the signal suppression, for non-relativistic scalars, with respect to a background of massless particles, and {\rm (b)} for flat enough spectra, a growth of the signal with the observation time faster than for a massless stochastic background.

Studying the anisotropy of the gravitational wave stochastic background with LISA

A plethora of gravitational wave stochastic backgrounds populate the sensitivity window of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. We show that LISA can detect the anisotropy of the background corresponding to the multipole moments of order l=2 and 4. The signal-to-noise ratio generated by galactic white dwarf binary systems could be as high as 60 for 3 yrs of integration, and LISA could provide valuable information on the spatial distribution of a variety of galactic sources. We also show that the cross-correlation of the data sets from two interferometers could marginally lead to meaningful upper-limits on the degree of isotropy of the primordial gravitational wave background.

Gauge invariant grid discretization of Schrödinger equation

Using the Wilson formulation of lattice gauge theories, a gauge invariant grid discretization of a one-particle Hamiltonian in the presence of an external electromagnetic field is proposed. This Hamiltonian is compared both with that obtained by a straightforward discretization of the continuous Hamiltonian by means of balanced difference methods, and with a tight-binding Hamiltonian. The proposed Hamiltonian and the balanced difference one are used to compute the energy spectrum of a charged particle in a two-dimensional parabolic potential in the presence of a perpendicular, constant magnetic field. With this example we point out how a "naive" discretization gives rise to an explicit breaking of the gauge invariance and to large errors in the computed eigenvalues and corresponding probability densities; in particular, the error on the eigenfunctions may lead to very poor estimates of the mean values of some relevant physical quantities on the corresponding states. On the contrary, the proposed discretized Hamiltonian allows a reliable computation of both the energy spectrum and the probability densities.

Spectrum of relic gravitational waves in string cosmology

We compute the spectrum of relic gravitons in a model of string cosmology. In the low- and in the high-frequency limits we reproduce known results. The full spectrum, however, also displays a series of oscillations which could give a characteristic signature at the planned LIGO/VIRGO detectors. For special values of the parameters of the model the signal reaches its maximum already at frequencies accessible to LIGO and VIRGO and it is close to the sensitivity of first generation experiments.

Effective Lagrangian for Quantum Black Holes

We discuss the most general effective Lagrangian obtained from the assumption that the degrees of freedom to be quantized, in a black hole, are on the horizon. The effective Lagrangian depends only on the induced metric and the extrinsic curvature of the (fluctuating) horizon, and the possible operators can be arranged in an expansion in powers of $\mpl/M$, where $\mpl$ is the Planck mass and $M$ the black hole mass. We perform a semiclassical expansion of the action with a formalism which preserves general covariance explicitly. Quantum fluctuations over the classical solutions are described by a single scalar field living in the 2+1 dimensional world-volume swept by the horizon, with a given coupling to the background geometry. We discuss the resulting field theory and we compute the black hole entropy with our formalism.
