Traversable wormholes from a smoothed string fluid in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigate traversable wormhole solutions in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity sourced by a smoothed string fluid. Originally proposed to model regular black holes, this energy density profile is adapted here to sustain wormhole geometries by allowing for a radially varying equation of state. We obtain zero-tidal-force solutions that satisfy all traversability criteria and remain globally regular. The Gauss-Bonnet (GB) coupling $α$ plays a central role in shaping the throat geometry. We identify a parameter region ($α\geq 1$, $\varepsilon \leq 0.1$) in which the null energy condition is satisfied in the vicinity of the throat, representing a significant improvement over general relativistic counterparts. The interplay between the smoothing scale $a$ and the string density $\varepsilon$ ensures finite curvature invariants while reducing the violation of energy conditions. An analysis of the volume integral quantifier and the complexity factor further shows that strong EGB coupling simultaneously suppresses gravitational complexity and the total amount of exotic matter. These results establish a unified framework in which the same string fluid source can generate both regular black holes and stable traversable wormholes, depending on the strength of higher-curvature corrections.

Exact solution for a traversable wormhole in a curvature-coupled antisymmetric background field

In this work, we study a traversable wormhole sourced by an ideal matter fluid with an antisymmetric 2-tensor background field coupled to gravity in a scenario of spontaneously broken Lorentz symmetry. Contrary to employed in the literature, we use a nonminimal curvature-coupling term $B^{μν}B^{κλ}R_{μνκλ}$ which incorporates all three kinds of Lorentz-violating coefficient for the pure-gravity sector of the minimal standard-model extension. We find that the wormhole is non-asymptotically globally flat and determine the allowed parameters of the theory, showing that the matter fluid must be necessarily anisotropic. We also analyze the energy conditions, checking their validity range and comparing them with those predicted by general relativity.

Four-dimensional regular black strings in bilocal gravity

In this paper, we obtain a static black string solution for a bilocal gravitational source in 3+1 dimensions. The solution is regular at the origin and tends asymptotically to the ordinary static uncharged black string solution of general relativity. It allows an event horizon and an internal horizon depending on the value of the mass density. A mass remnant associated with a vanishing Hawking temperature is also found. In order to stabilize the solution, a perfect cosmological fluid with state parameter $ω>-1$ should be present throughout space. However, energy conditions do not exclude an exotic substance nearby the black string. Finally, we find the stationary counterpart of the solution and analyze the behavior of the horizons according to the mass and angular momentum of the spinning object.

Quasibound states of scalar fields in the consistent 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-(Anti-)de Sitter gravity

We examine the interaction between massless scalar fields and the gravitational field generated by a black hole solution that was recently obtained in the consistent well-defined 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a cosmological constant. In order to do this, we calculate quasibound state frequencies of scalar fields for the spherically symmetric black hole in the consistent 4-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter theories. The expression for the quasibound states is obtained by using the polynomial condition associated to the Heun functions, and their values are overdamped. We also demonstrate the stability of the systems.

Casimir Effect in a Schwarzschild-Like Wormhole Spacetime

In this paper, we investigate the role of gravito-inertial effects on the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field confined between two parallel plates orbiting a static and zero tidal Schwarzschild-like wormhole, at zero temperature. Firstly, we obtain the metric in isotropic coordinates, finding the allowed angular velocities and the circular orbit radii for a material particle as well as for the photon. Following, we compute the changes induced by both gravity and rotation of the plates in the energy density of the quantum vacuum fluctuations associated to the scalar field, in the zero tidal approximation inside the cavity. Finally, the Casimir energy obtained for some these wormholes are graphically compared between themselves and also with those ones related to an Ellis wormhole as well as to a Schwarzschild black hole. With this, the gravito-inertial effects on the quantum vacuum fluctuations analyzed in this work allow to recognize and identify both the geometry and topology of the spacetime associated to each one of these objects.

Gravitational bending angle with finite distances by Casimir wormholes

In this paper, we investigate the gravitational bending angle due to the Casimir wormholes, which consider the Casimir energy as the source. Furthermore, some of these Casimir wormholes regard Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) corrections of Casimir energy. We use the Ishihara method for the Jacobi metric, which allows us to study the bending angle of light and massive test particles for finite distances. Beyond the uncorrected Casimir source, we consider many GUP corrections, namely: the Kempf, Mangano and Mann (KMM) model, the Detournay, Gabriel and Spindel (DGS) model, and the so-called type II model for the GUP principle. We also find the deflection angle of light and massive particles in the case of the receiver and the source are far away from the lens. In this case, we also compute the optical scalars: convergence and shear for these Casimir wormholes as a gravitational weak lens.

Class of solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation with ordering parameter

In this letter, we discuss the Wheeler-DeWitt equation with an ordering parameter in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. The solutions when the universe was very small and at the end of the expansion are obtained in terms of Bessel and Heun functions, respectively. We also obtain a boundary condition which should be satisfied by the ordering parameter, namely, $0 \leq p \leq 2$. We investigate the minimum value of the scale factor with respect to the maximum value of the probability density.

Exact solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation with ordering term in a dark energy scenario

We investigate the quantum evolution of the universe in the presence of two types of dark energies. First, we consider the phantom class ($ω<-1$) which would be responsible for a super-accelerated cosmic expansion, and then we apply the procedure to an ordinary $Λ>0$ vacuum ($ω=-1$). This is done by analytically solving the Wheeler-DeWitt equation with ordering term (WdW) in the cosmology of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker. In this paper, we find exact solutions in the scale factor $a$ and the ordering parameter $q$. For $q=1$ it is shown that the universe has a high probability of evolving from a big bang singularity. On the other hand, for $q = 0$ the solution indicates that an initial singularity is unlikely. Instead, the universe has maximal probability of starting with a finite well-defined size which we compute explicitly at primordial times. We also study the time evolution of the scale factor by means of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and show that an ultimate big rip singularity emerges explicitly from our solutions. The phantom scenario thus predicts a dramatic end in which the universe would reach an infinite scale factor in a finite cosmological time as pointed by Caldwell et al. in a classical setup. Finally, we solve the WdW equation with ordinary constant dark energy and show that in this case the universe does not rip apart in a finite era.

Null Second Order Corrections to Casimir Energy in Weak Gravitational Field

The discussion of vacuum energy is currently a subject of great theoretical importance, specially concerning the cosmological constant problem in General Relativity. From Quantum Field Theory, it is stated that vacuum states subject to boundary conditions may generate tensions on these boundaries related to a measurable non-zero renormalized vacuum energy: the Casimir Effect. As such, investigating how these vacuum states and energy behave in curved backgrounds is just natural and might provide important results in the near future. In this paper we revisit a model of the Casimir Effect in weak gravitational field background, which has been proposed and further generalized in the literature. A trick originally used to simplify calculations is shown to lead to a wrong value for the energy shift, and by performing explicit mode expansion we arrive at an unexpected result: null gravitational correction even at order $(M/R)^2$, in opposition to earlier results.

Quantum Vacuum Fluctuations in a Chromomagnetic-like Background

In this paper we study the effects associated to quantum vacuum fluctuations of vectorial perturbations of the Abelian SU(2) Yang-Mills field in a static and homogeneous chromomagnetic-like background field, at zero temperature. We use periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions in order to calculate the Casimir energy by means of the frequency sum technique and of the regularization method based on zeta functions, analyzing its behavior in the weak and strong coupling regimes. We compare the obtained results with the similar ones found for scalar and spinor fields placed in an ordinary magnetic field background. We show that only in the weak coupling regime the non-trivial topology of the system encoded in the antiperiodic boundary conditions changes the nature of the Casimir force with respect to the periodic ones. Considering the weak coupling scenario, we show that the introduction of a third polarization state in the perturbations makes manifest the effects on the Casimir energy due to the coupling with the chromomagnetic-like background field, for both the boundary conditions. Finally, in the strong coupling regime, in which the quantum vacuum is not stable due to the Nielsen-Olesen instabilities, we evaluate the effects of a compact extra dimension on its stabilization.

Casimir Effect in the Kerr Spacetime with Quintessence

We calculate the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field in a cavity formed by nearby parallel plates orbiting a rotating spherical body surrounded by quintessence, investigating the influence of the gravitational field on that energy, at zero temperature. This influence includes the effects due to the spacetime dragging caused by the source rotation as well as those ones due to the quintessence. We show that the energy depends on all the involved parameters, as source mass, angular momentum and quintessence state parameter, for any radial coordinate and polar angle. We show that at the north pole the Casimir energy is not influenced by the quintessential matter. At the equatorial plane, when the quintessence is canceled, the result obtained in the literature is recovered. Finally, constraints in the quintessence parameters are obtained from the uncertainty in the current measurements of Casimir effect.

Generalized non-minimal couplings in Randall-Sundrum scenarios

The Geometrical Localization mechanism in Randall-sundrum (RS) scenarios is extended by considering the coupling between a quadratic mass term and geometrical tensors. Since the quadratic term is symmetric, tensors with two symmetric indices have to be taken into account. These are the Ricci and the Einstein tensors. For the Ricci tensor it is shown that a localized zero mode exists while that is not possible for the Einstein tensor. It is already known that the Ricci scalar generates a localized solution but the metrics do not. Therefore, it can be conclude that divergenceless tensors do not localize the zero mode of gauge fields. The result is valid for any warp factor recovering the RS metrics at the boundaries, and therefore is valid for RS I and II models. We also compute resonances for all couplings. These are calculated using the transfer matrix method. The cases studied consider the standard RS with delta-like branes, and branes generated by kinks and domain-wall as well. The parameters are changed to control the thickness of the smooth brane. We find that, for all cases considered, geometrical coupling does not generate resonances. This enforces similar results for the coupling with the Ricci scalar and points to the existence of some unidentified fundamental structure of these couplings.

Relativistic Landau Levels in the Rotating Cosmic String Spacetime

In the spacetime induced by a rotating cosmic string we compute the energy levels of a massive spinless particle coupled covariantly to a homogeneous magnetic field parallel to the string. Afterwards, we consider the addition of a scalar potential with a Coulomb-type and a linear confining term and completely solve the Klein-Gordon equations for each configuration. Finally, assuming rigid-wall boundary conditions, we find the Landau levels when the linear defect is itself magnetized. Remarkably, our analysis reveals that the Landau quantization occurs even in the absence of gauge fields provided the string is endowed with spin.

Variations in the fine structure constant constraining gravity theories

In this paper, we investigate how the fine structure constant, $α$, locally varies in the presence of a static and spherically symmetric gravitational source. The procedure consists in calculating the solution and the energy eigenvalues of a massive scalar field around that source, considering the weak-field regimen. From this result, we obtain expressions for an spatially variable fine structure constant by considering suitable modifications in the involved parameters admitting some scenarios of semi-classical and quantum gravities. Constraints on free parameters of the approached theories are calculated from astrophysical observations of the emission spectra of a white dwarf. Such constraints are finally compared with those ones obtained in the literature.

Casimir Effect in the Horava-Lifshitz Gravity with a Cosmological Constant

We calculate the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed tangentially to the surface of a sphere with mass M and radius R. To this end, we take into account a static and spherically symmetric solution of Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, with a cosmological constant term, in lower orders of approximation, considering both weak-field and infrared limits. We show that the Casimir energy, just in the second order weak-field approximation, is modified due to the parameter of the HL gravity as well as to the cosmological constant.

Non-minimal couplings in Randall-Sundrum Scenarios

In this paper we propose a new way of obtaining four dimensional gauge invariant $U(n)$ gauge field from a bulk action. The results are valid for both Randall-Sundrum scenarios and are obtained without the introduction of other fields or new degrees of freedom. The model is based only in non-minimal couplings with the gravity field. We show that two non-minimal couplings are necessary, one with the field strength and the other with a mass term. Despite the loosing of five dimensional gauge invariance by the mass term a massless gauge field is obtained over the brane. To obtain this, we need of a fine tuning of the two parameters introduced through the couplings. The fine tuning is obtained by imposing the boundary conditions and to guarantee non-abelian gauge invariance in four dimensions. With this we are left with no free parameters and the model is completely determined. The model also provides analytical solutions to the linearized equations for the zero mode and for a general warp factor.

On Effective Spacetime Dimension in the Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity

In this manuscript we explicitly compute the effective dimension of spacetime in some backgrounds of Hořava-Lifshitz (H-L) gravity. For all the cases considered, the results are compatible with a dimensional reduction of the spacetime to $d+1=2$, at high energies (ultraviolet limit), which is confirmed by other quantum gravity approaches, as well as to $d+1=4$, at low energies (infrared limit). This is obtained by computing the free energy of massless scalar and gauge fields. We find that the only effect of the background is to change the proportionality constant between the internal energy and temperature. Firstly, we consider both the non-perturbative and perturbative models involving the matter action, without gravitational sources but with manifest time and space symmetry breaking, in order to calculate modifications in the Stephan-Boltzmann law. When gravity is taken into account, we assume a scenario in which there is a spherical source with mass $M$ and radius $R$ in thermal equilibrium with radiation, and consider the static and spherically symmetric solution of the H-L theory found by Kehagias-Sfetsos (K-S), in the weak and strong field approximations. As byproducts, for the weak field regime, we used the current uncertainty of the solar radiance measurements to establish a constraint on the $ω$ free parameter of the K-S solution. We also calculate the corrections, due to gravity, to the recently predicted attractive force that black bodies exert on nearby neutral atoms and molecules.

Photon mass as a probe to extra dimensions

In this manuscript we show that the geometrical localization mechanism implies a four dimensional mass for the photon. The consistence of the model provides a mass given exactly by $m_γ=\sqrt{R}/4$ where $R$ is the Ricci scalar. As a consequence, the cosmological photon has a mass related to the vacuum solution of the Einstein equation. At the present age of the universe we have a dS vacuum with $R=4Λ$, where Lambda is a positive cosmological constant. With this we find that $m_γ\approx 2\times 10^{-69}$ kg, which is below the present experimental upper bounds, and such correction may be observed in the next years with more precise measurements. By considering the value of $R$ inside some astrophysical sources and environments we find that the bound is also satisfied. The experimental verification of this mass, beyond pointing to the existence of extra dimensions, would imply in a fundamental change in cosmology, astrophysics and in particle physics since the same mechanism is valid for non-abelian gauge fields.

Vacuum polarization at the boundary of a topological insulator

In this paper we study the polarized vacuum energy on the conducting surface of a topological insulator characterized by both $Z_2$ topological index and time reversal symmetry. This boundary is subject to the action of a static and spatially homogeneous magnetic field perpendicular to it as well as of an electric field that is uniform near the considered surface and produced by a biased voltage, at zero temperature. To do this, we consider modifications in the Gauss law that arise due to the nonzero gradient of the axionlike pseudoscalar factor coupled to the applied magnetic field, which accounts for the topological properties of the system. Such a term allows us to find a correction to the induced charges which modifies the quantum vacuum of the spinor field regarding an ordinary surface. The polarized vacuum energy is calculated in both the weak-field approximation and in the general case, and since the found energy depends on a length defined on the boundary, we show that there is a radial density of force or a surface shear stress that tends to shrink it.

Casimir effect due to a slowly rotating source in the weak field approximation

We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy density for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed very close to the surface of a rotating spherical gravitational source with mass $M$, radius $R$ and momentum angular $J$, at the equatorial region. We consider that the source rotates slowly and that the gravitational field is weak. Corrections to the Casimir energy density induced by the gravitational field generated by this source are calculated up to $M/R^2$ order. The obtained results show us that there is an important modification in the Casimir energy only in this order of approximation, which depends on the surface gravity as well as on the rotation of the source. Thermal corrections to the Casimir energy found also are calculated in all these orders.

Exact solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation in the Kerr-Newman background and Hawking radiation

This work considers the influence of the gravitational field produced by a charged and rotating black hole (Kerr-Newman spacetime) on a charged massive scalar field. We obtain exact solutions of both angular and radial parts of the Klein-Gordon equation in this spacetime, which are given in terms of the confluent Heun functions. From the radial solution, we obtain the exact wave solutions near the exterior horizon of the black hole, and discuss the Hawking radiation of charged massive scalar particles.

Some remarks on Relativistic Diffusion and the Spectral Dimension Criterion

The spectral dimension $d_s$ for high energies is calculated using the Relativistic Schrödinger Equation Analytically Continued (RSEAC) instead of the so-called Telegraph's Equation (TE), in both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) regimens. Regarding the TE, the recent literature presents difficulties related to its stochastic derivation and interpretation, advocating the use of the RSEAC to properly describe the relativistic diffusion phenomena. Taking into account that the Lorentz symmetry is broken in UV regime at Lifshitz point, we show that there exists a degeneracy in very high energies, meaning that both the RSEAC and the TE correctly describe the diffusion processes at these energy scales, at least under the spectral dimension criterion. In fact, both the equations yield the same result, namely, $d_s = 2$, a dimensional reduction that is compatible with several theories of quantum gravity. This result is reached even when one takes into account a cosmological model - the De Sitter one - for a flat Universe. On the other hand, in the IR regimen, such degeneracy is lifted in favor of the approach via TE, due to the fact that only this equation provides the correct value for $d_s$, which is equal to the actual number of spacetime dimensions, i. e., $d_s = 4$, while RSEAC furnishes $d_s=3$, so that a diffusing particle described by this latter experiences a three-dimensional spacetime.

Horava-Lifshitz Gravity Effects on Casimir Energy in Weak Field Approximation and Infrared Regime

We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy of a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed tangentially to the surface of a sphere with mass M and radius R. This study will take into account the static and spherically symmetric solution of Horava-Lifshitz gravity found by Kehagias-Sfetsos (KS), in both weak field and infrared limits. A slight amplification of the Casimir force between the conducting plates is found. Thermal corrections to the Casimir energy are analyzed. Based on current Casimir effect measurements, a constraint on the $ω$ parameter of KS metric is also obtained.

Self-force on an electric dipole in the spacetime of a cosmic string

We calculate the electrostatic self-force on an electric dipole in the spacetime generated by a static, thin, infinite and straight cosmic string. The electric dipole is held fixed in different configurations, namely, parallel, perpendicular to the cosmic string and oriented along the azimuthal direction around this topological defect, which is stretched along the z axis. We show that the self-force is equivalent to an interaction of the electric dipole with an effective dipole moment which depends on the linear mass density of the cosmic string and on the configuration. The plots of the self-forces as functions of the parameter which determines the angular deficit of the cosmic string are shown for those different configurations.

Antisymmetric Tensor Fields in Randall Sundrum Thick Branes

In this article we study the issue of localization of the three-form field in a Randall-Sundrum-like scenario. We simulate our membrane by kinks embedded in D=5, describing the usual case (not deformed) and new models coming from a specific deformation procedure. The gravitational background regarded includes the dilaton contribution. We show that we can only localize the zero-mode of this field for a specific range of the dilaton coupling, even in the deformed case. A study about resonances is presented. We use a numerical approach for calculations of the transmission coefficients associated to the quantum mechanical problem. This gives a clear description of the physics involved in the model. We find in this way that the appearance of resonances is strongly dependent on the coupling constant. We study the cases $p=1,3$ and 5 for $α=-1.75$ and $α=-20$. The first value of $α$ give us one resonance peak for $p=1$ and no resonances for $p=3,5$. The second value of $α$ give us a very rich structure of resonances, with number deppending on the value of $p$.

Bulk Antisymmetric tensor fields coupled to a dilaton in a Randall-Sundrum model

A string-inspired 3-form-dilaton-gravity model is studied in a Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario. As expected, the rank-3 antisymmetric field is exponentially suppressed. For each mass level, the mass spectrum is bigger than the one for the Kalb-Ramond field. The coupling between the dilaton and the massless Kaluza-Klein mode of the 3-form is calculated and the coupling constant of the cubic interactions obtained numerically. This coupling are of the order of Tev$^{-1}$, therefore there exist a possibility to find some signal of it at Tev scale.

Electronic oscillations in paired polyacetylene chains

An interacting pair of polyacetylene chains are initially modeled as a couple of undimerized polymers described by a Hamiltonian based on the tight-binding model representing the electronic behavior along the linear chain, plus a Dirac's potential double well representing the interaction between the chains. A theoretical field formalism is employed, and we find that the system exhibits a gap in its energy band due to the presence of a mass-matrix term in the Dirac's Lagrangian that describes the system. The Peierls instability is introduced in the chains by coupling a scalar field to the fermions of the theory via spontaneous symmetry breaking, to obtain a kink-like soliton, which separates two vacuum regions, i.e., two spacial configurations (enantiomers) of the each molecule. Since that mass-matrix and the pseudo-spin operator do not commute in the same quantum representation, we demonstrate that there is a particle oscillation phenomenon with a periodicity equivalent to the Bloch oscillations.
