Arbitrary Spin Galilean Oscillator

The so-called Dirac oscillator was proposed as a modification of the free Dirac equation which reproduces many of the properties of the simple harmonic oscillator but accompanied by a strong spin-orbit coupling term. It has yet to be extended successfully to the arbitrary spin S case primarily because of the unwieldiness of general spin Lorentz invariant wave equations. It is shown here using the formalism of totally symmetric multispinors that the Dirac oscillator can, however, be made to accommodate spin by incorporating it into the framework of Galilean relativity. This is done explicitly for spin zero and spin one as special cases of the arbitrary spin result. For the general case it is shown that the coefficient of the spin-orbit term has a 1/S behavior by techniques which are virtually identical to those employed in the derivation of the g-factor carried out over four decades ago.

Where Have All the Goldstone Bosons Gone?

According to a commonly held view of spontaneously broken symmetry in gauge theories, troublesome Nambu-Goldstone bosons are effectively eliminated by turning into longitudinal modes of a massive vector meson. This note shows that this is not in fact a consistent view of the role of Nambu-Goldstone bosons in such theories. These particles necessarily appear as gauge excitations whenever they are formulated in a manifestly covariant gauge. The radiation gauge provides therefore the dual advantage of circumventing the Goldstone theorem and making evident the disappearance of these particles from the physical spectrum.

Second central extension in Galilean covariant field theory

The second central extension of the planar Galilei group has been alleged to have its origin in the spin variable. This idea is explored here by considering local Galilean covariant field theory for free fields of arbitrary spin. It is shown that such systems generally display only a trivial realization of the second central extension. While it is possible to realize any desired value of the extension parameter by suitable redefinition of the boost operator, such an approach has no necessary connection to the spin of the basic underlying field.

Perturbation Theory and the Aharonov-Bohm Effect

The perturbation theory expansion of the Aharonov-Bohm scattering amplitude has previously been studied in the context of quantum mechanics for spin zero and spin-1/2 particles as well in Galilean covariant field theory. This problem is reconsidered in the framework of the model in which the flux line is considered to have a finite radius which is shrunk to zero at the end of the calculation. General agreement with earlier results is obtained but with the advantage of a treatment which unifies all the various subcases.
