Structural and Magnetic Dynamics in the Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Ni$_2$MnGa

Magnetic shape memory Heusler alloys are multiferroics stabilized by the correlations between electronic, magnetic and structural order. To study these correlations we use time resolved x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments to measure the laser induced dynamics in a Heusler alloy Ni$_2$MnGa film and reveal a set of timescales intrinsic to the system. We observe a coherent phonon which we identify as the amplitudon of the modulated structure and an ultrafast phase transition leading to a quenching of the incommensurate modulation within 300~fs with a recovery time of a few ps. The thermally driven martensitic transition to the high temperature cubic phase proceeds via nucleation within a few ps and domain growth limited by the speed of sound. The demagnetization time is 320~fs, which is comparable to the quenching of the structural modulation.

Imaging the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic first order phase transition of FeRh

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) first order phase transition of an epitaxial FeRh thin-film has been studied with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism using photoemission electron microscopy. The FM phase is magnetized in-plane due to shape anisotropy, but the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is negligible and there is no preferred in-plane magnetization direction. When heating through the AFM to FM phase transition the nucleation of the FM phase occurs at many independent nucleation sites with random domain orientation. The domains subsequently align to form the final FM domain structure. We observe no pinning of the FM domain structure.

Coherent phonon dynamics at the martensitic phase transition of Ni_2MnGa

We use time-resolved optical reflectivity to study the laser stimulated dynamics in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni_2MnGa. We observe two coherent optical phonons, at 1.2 THz in the martensite phase and at 0.7 THz in the pre-martensite phase, which we interpret as a zone-folded acoustic phonon and a heavily damped amplitudon respectively. In the martensite phase the martensitic phase transition can be induced by a fs laser pulse on a timescale of a few ps.

Structural and magnetic dynamics of a laser induced phase transition in FeRh

We use time-resolved x-ray diffraction and magnetic optical Kerr effect to study the laser induced antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition in FeRh. The structural response is given by the nucleation of independent ferromagnetic domains (τ_1 ~ 30ps). This is significantly faster than the magnetic response (τ_2 ~ 60ps) given by the subsequent domain realignment. X-ray diffraction shows that the two phases co-exist on short time-scales and that the phase transition is limited by the speed of sound. A nucleation model describing both the structural and magnetic dynamics is presented.

Observation of a van Hove Singularity in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$ with Angle Resolved Photoemission

We have performed high energy resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of the normal state band structure of oxygen overdoped $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$. We find that there is an extended saddle point singularity in the density of states along $Γ-\bar{M}-Z$ direction. The data also indicate that there is an asymmetry in the Fermi surface for both the $Γ-\bar{M}-Z$ and perpendicular directions.

Temperature dependence of the superconducting gap anisotropy in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$

We present the first detailed data of the momentum-resolved, temperature dependence of the superconducting gap of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$, complemented by similar data on the intensity of the photoemission superconducting condensate spectral area. The gap anisotropy between the $Γ-\bar{M}$ and $Γ-X$ directions increases markedly with increasing temperature, contrary to what happens for conventional anisotropic-gap superconductors such as lead. Specifically, the size of the superconducting gap along the $Γ-X$ direction decreases to values indistinguishable from zero at temperatures for which the gap retains virtually full value along the $Γ-\bar{M}$ direction.
