Viscous fluid dynamics with decaying vacuum energy density

In this work, we investigate the dynamics of bulk viscous models with decaying vacuum energy density (VED) in a spatially homogeneous and isotropic flat Friedmann-Lemaître- Robertson-walker (FLRW) spacetime. We particularly are interested to study the viscous model which considers first order deviation from equilibrium, i.e., the Eckart theory. In the first part, using the different forms of the bulk viscous coefficient, we find the main cosmological parameters, like Hubble parameter, scale factor, deceleration parameter and equation of state parameter analytically. We discuss some cosmological consequences of the evolutions and dynamics of the different viscous models with decaying VED. We examine the linear perturbation growth in the context of the bulk viscous model with decaying VED to see if it survives this further level of scrutiny. The second part of the work is devoted to constrain the viscous model of the form $ζ\propto H$, where $ζ$ is the bulk viscous coefficient and $H$ is the Hubble parameter, using three different combinations of data from type Ia supernovae (Pantheon), $H(z)$ (cosmic chronometers), Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and $f(z)σ_8(z)$ measurements with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We show that the considered model is compatible with the cosmological probes, and the $Λ$CDM recovered in late-time of the evolution of the Universe. Finally, we obtain selection information criteria (AIC and BIC) to study the stability of the models.

Measurement of $ϕ$-meson production in Cu$+$Au at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of $ϕ$-meson production in asymmetric Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the $ϕ\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay channel at midrapidity $|η|<0.35$. Features of $ϕ$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Cu, Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the $ϕ$ meson in Cu$+$Au, Au$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$, $ϕ$-meson production measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. The elliptic flow for $ϕ$ mesons measured in Cu$+$Au and U$+$U collisions is well described by a (2+1)D viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity $η/s=1/4π$.

Kinematic dependence of azimuthal anisotropies in $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, $^3$He+Au at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV

There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in $p/d/^{3}$He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in $p$+$p$/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. These results provide additional constraints on contributions from nonflow and longitudinal decorrelations.

Measurement of $ψ(2S)$ nuclear modification at backward and forward rapidity in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, and $p$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

Suppression of the $J/ψ$ nuclear-modification factor has been seen as a trademark signature of final-state effects in large collision systems for decades. In small systems, the nuclear modification was attributed to cold-nuclear-matter effects until the observation of strong differential suppression of the $ψ(2S)$ state in $p/d$$+$$A$ collisions suggested the presence of final-state effects. Results of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ measurements in the dimuon decay channel are presented here for $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, and $p$$+$Au collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The results are predominantly shown in the form of the nuclear-modification factor, $R_{pA}$, the ratio of the $ψ(2S)$ invariant yield per nucleon-nucleon collision in collisions of proton on target nucleus to that in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. Measurements of the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ nuclear-modification factor are compared with shadowing and transport-model predictions, as well as to complementary measurements at Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

Study of $ϕ$-meson production in $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

Small nuclear collisions are mainly sensitive to cold-nuclear-matter effects; however, the collective behavior observed in these collisions shows a hint of hot-nuclear-matter effects. The identified-particle spectra, especially the $ϕ$ mesons which contain strange and antistrange quarks and have a relatively small hadronic-interaction cross section, are a good tool to study these effects. The PHENIX experiment has measured $ϕ$ mesons in a specific set of small collision systems $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au, as well as $d$$+$Au [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 83}, 024909 (2011)], at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The transverse-momentum spectra and nuclear-modification factors are presented and compared to theoretical-model predictions. The comparisons with different calculations suggest that quark-gluon plasma may be formed in these small collision systems at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. However, the volume and the lifetime of the produced medium may be insufficient for observing strangeness-enhancement and jet-quenching effects. Comparison with calculations suggests that the main production mechanisms of $ϕ$ mesons at midrapidity may be different in $p$$+$Al versus $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. While thermal quark recombination seems to dominate in $p/d/$$^3$He$+$Au collisions, fragmentation seems to be the main production mechanism in $p$$+$Al collisions.

Systematic study of nuclear effects in $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV using $π^0$ production

The PHENIX collaboration presents a systematic study of $π^0$ production from $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Measurements were performed with different centrality selections as well as the total inelastic, 0%--100%, selection for all collision systems. For 0%--100% collisions, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are consistent with unity for $p_T$ above 8 GeV/$c$, but exhibit an enhancement in peripheral collisions and a suppression in central collisions. The enhancement and suppression characteristics are similar for all systems for the same centrality class. It is shown that for high-$p_T$-$π^0$ production, the nucleons in the $d$ and $^3$He interact mostly independently with the Au nucleus and that the counter intuitive centrality dependence is likely due to a physical correlation between multiplicity and the presence of a hard scattering process. These observations disfavor models where parton energy loss has a significant contribution to nuclear modifications in small systems. Nuclear modifications at lower $p_T$ resemble the Cronin effect -- an increase followed by a peak in central or inelastic collisions and a plateau in peripheral collisions. The peak height has a characteristic ordering by system size as $p$$+$Au $>$ $d$$+$Au $>$ $^{3}$He$+$Au $>$ $p$$+$Al. For collisions with Au ions, current calculations based on initial state cold nuclear matter effects result in the opposite order, suggesting the presence of other contributions to nuclear modifications, in particular at lower $p_T$.

Transverse-single-spin asymmetries of charged pions at midrapidity in transversely polarized $p{+}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured single-spin asymmetries for charged pions in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at the center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. The pions were detected at central rapidities of $|η|<0.35$. The single-spin asymmetries are consistent with zero for each charge individually, as well as consistent with the previously published neutral-pion asymmetries in the same rapidity range. However, they show a slight indication of charge-dependent differences which may suggest a flavor dependence in the underlying mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

Friedmann cosmology with decaying vacuum density in Brans-Dicke theory

In this paper, we study Friedmann cosmology with time-varying vacuum energy density in the context of Brans-Dicke theory. We consider an isotropic and homogeneous flat space, filled with a matter-dominated perfect fluid and a dynamical cosmological term $Λ(t) $, obeying the equation of state of the vacuum. As the exact nature of a possible time-varying vacuum is yet to be found, we explore $Λ(t)$ given by the phenomenological law $Λ(t)=λ+σH$, where $λ$ and $σ$ are positive constants. We solve the model and then focus on two different cases $Λ_{H1}$ and $Λ_{H2}$ by assuming $Λ=λ$ and $Λ=σH$, respectively. Notice that $Λ_{H1}$ is the analog of the standard $Λ$CDM, but within the Brans-Dicke cosmology. We find the analytical solution of the main cosmological functions such as the Hubble parameter, the scale factor, deceleration and equation of state parameters for these models. In order to test the viability of the cosmological scenarios, we perform two sets of joint observational analyses of the recent Type Ia supernova data (Pantheon), observational measurements of Hubble parameter data, Baryon acoustic oscillation/Cosmic microwave background data and Local Hubble constant for each model. For the sake of comparison, the same data analysis is performed for the $Λ$CDM model. Each model shows a transition from decelerated phase to accelerated phase and can be viewed as an effective quintessence behavior. Using the model selection criteria AIC and BIC to distinguish from existing dark energy models, we find that the Brans-Dicke analog of the $Λ$-cosmology (i.e. our model $Λ_{H1}$) performs at a level comparable to the standard $Λ$CDM, whereas $Λ_{H2}$ is less favoured.

Transverse momentum dependent forward neutron single spin asymmetries in transversely polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

In 2015, the PHENIX collaboration has measured very forward ($η>6.8$) single-spin asymmetries of inclusive neutrons in transversely polarized proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at a center of mass energy of 200 GeV. A previous publication from this data set concentrated on the nuclear dependence of such asymmetries. In this measurement the explicit transverse-momentum dependence of inclusive neutron single spin asymmetries for proton-proton collisions is extracted using a bootstrapping-unfolding technique on the transverse momenta. This explicit transverse-momentum dependence will help improve the understanding of the mechanisms that create these asymmetries.

$J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ production at forward rapidity in $p$+$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the differential cross section, mean transverse momentum, mean transverse momentum squared of inclusive $J/ψ$ and cross-section ratio of $ψ(2S)$ to $J/ψ$ at forward rapidity in \pp collisions at \sqrts = 510 GeV via the dimuon decay channel. Comparison is made to inclusive $J/ψ$ cross sections measured at \sqrts = 200 GeV and 2.76--13 TeV. The result is also compared to leading-order nonrelativistic QCD calculations coupled to a color-glass-condensate description of the low-$x$ gluons in the proton at low transverse momentum ($p_T$) and to next-to-leading order nonrelativistic QCD calculations for the rest of the $p_T$ range. These calculations overestimate the data at low $p_T$. While consistent with the data within uncertainties above $\approx3$ GeV/$c$, the calculations are systematically below the data. The total cross section times the branching ratio is BR $dσ^{J/ψ}_{pp}/dy (1.2<|y|<2.2, 0<p_T<10~\mbox{GeV/$c$}) =$ 54.3 $\pm$ 0.5 (stat) $\pm$ 5.5 (syst) nb.

Evolution of pi^0 suppression in Au+Au collisions from sqrt(s_NN) = 39 to 200 GeV

Neutral-pion, pi^0, spectra were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.35) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 39 and 62.4 GeV and compared to earlier measurements at 200 GeV in the 1<p_T<10 GeV/c transverse-momentum (p_T) range. The high-p_T tail is well described by a power law in all cases and the powers decrease significantly with decreasing center-of-mass energy. The change of powers is very similar to that observed in the corresponding p+p-collision spectra. The nuclear-modification factors (R_AA) show significant suppression and a distinct energy dependence at moderate p_T in central collisions. At high p_T, R_AA is similar for 62.4 and 200 GeV at all centralities. Perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations that describe R_AA well at 200 GeV, fail to describe the 39 GeV data, raising the possibility that the relative importance of initial-state effects and soft processes increases at lower energies. A conclusion that the region where hard processes are dominant is reached only at higher p_T, is also supported by the x_T dependence of the x_T-scaling power-law exponent.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ at forward and backward rapidity in $p$+$p$, $p$$+A$l, $p$$+A$u, and $^3$He+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200~{\rm GeV}$

Charmonium is a valuable probe in heavy-ion collisions to study the properties of the quark gluon plasma, and is also an interesting probe in small collision systems to study cold nuclear matter effects, which are also present in large collision systems. With the recent observations of collective behavior of produced particles in small system collisions, measurements of the modification of charmonium in small systems have become increasingly relevant. We present the results of $J/ψ$ measurements at forward and backward rapidity in various small collision systems, $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Al, $p$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au, at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV. The results are presented in the form of the observable $R_{AB}$, the nuclear modification factor, a measure of the ratio of the $J/ψ$ invariant yield compared to the scaled yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. We examine the rapidity, transverse momentum, and collision centrality dependence of nuclear effects on $J/ψ$ production with different projectile sizes $p$ and $^3$He, and different target sizes Al and Au. The modification is found to be strongly dependent on the target size, but to be very similar for $p$$+$Au and $^{3}$He$+$Au. However, for 0%--20% central collisions at backward rapidity, the modification for $^{3}$He$+$Au is found to be smaller than that for $p$$+$Au, with a mean fit to the ratio of $0.89\pm0.03$(stat)${\pm}0.08$(syst), possibly indicating final state effects due to the larger projectile size.

Measurement of charged pion double spin asymmetries at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries, $A_{LL}$, for charged pions at midrapidity ($|η|<0.35$) in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. These measurements are sensitive to the gluon spin contribution to the total spin of the proton in the parton momentum fraction $x$ range between 0.04 and 0.09. One can infer the sign of the gluon polarization from the ordering of pion asymmetries with charge alone. The asymmetries are found to be consistent with global quantum-chromodynamics fits of deep-inelastic scattering and data at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, which show a nonzero positive contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin.

Nuclear-modification factor of charged hadrons at forward and backward rapidity in $p$$+$Al and $p$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment has studied nuclear effects in $p$$+$Al and $p$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV on charged hadron production at forward rapidity ($1.4<η<2.4$, $p$-going direction) and backward rapidity ($-2.2<η<-1.2$, $A$-going direction). Such effects are quantified by measuring nuclear modification factors as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in various collision multiplicity selections. In central $p$$+$Al and $p$$+$Au collisions, a suppression (enhancement) is observed at forward (backward) rapidity compared to the binary scaled yields in $p$+$p$ collisions. The magnitude of enhancement at backward rapidity is larger in $p$$+$Au collisions than in $p$$+$Al collisions, which have a smaller number of participating nucleons. However, the results at forward rapidity show a similar suppression within uncertainties. The results in the integrated centrality are compared with calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions, which show a reasonable agreement at the forward rapidity but fail to describe the backward rapidity enhancement.

Production of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192$ GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $π^0$ and $η$ mesons at midrapidity in U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192$ GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $π^0(η)\rightarrowγγ$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $π^0$ and $η$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U$+$U collisions relative to binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ results. Yields of $π^0$ and $η$ mesons measured in U$+$U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $η$/$π^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Measurement of higher cumulants of net-charge multiplicity distributions in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200$ GeV

We report the measurement of cumulants ($C_n, n=1\ldots4$) of the net-charge distributions measured within pseudorapidity ($|η|<0.35$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7-200$ GeV with the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The ratios of cumulants (e.g. $C_1/C_2$, $C_3/C_1$) of the net-charge distributions, which can be related to volume independent susceptibility ratios, are studied as a function of centrality and energy. These quantities are important to understand the quantum-chromodynamics phase diagram and possible existence of a critical end point. The measured values are very well described by expectation from negative binomial distributions. We do not observe any nonmonotonic behavior in the ratios of the cumulants as a function of collision energy. The measured values of $C_1/C_2 = μ/σ^2$ and $C_3/C_1 = Sσ^3/μ$ can be directly compared to lattice quantum-chromodynamics calculations and thus allow extraction of both the chemical freeze-out temperature and the baryon chemical potential at each center-of-mass energy.

Measurement of parity-violating spin asymmetries in W$^{\pm}$ production at midrapidity in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions

We present measurements from the PHENIX experiment of large parity-violating single spin asymmetries of high transverse momentum electrons and positrons from $W^\pm/Z$ decays, produced in longitudinally polarized $p$$+$$p$ collisions at center of mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$=500 and 510~GeV. These asymmetries allow direct access to the anti-quark polarized parton distribution functions due to the parity-violating nature of the $W$-boson coupling to quarks and anti-quarks. The results presented are based on data collected in 2011, 2012, and 2013 with an integrated luminosity of 240 pb$^{-1}$, which exceeds previous PHENIX published results by a factor of more than 27. These high $Q^2$ data provide an important addition to our understanding of anti-quark parton helicity distribution functions.

Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV

Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, $dE_T/dη$, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ and 62.4 GeV, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV, $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV, and $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/dη$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

An Upgrade Proposal from the PHENIX Collaboration

In this document the PHENIX collaboration proposes a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This upgrade, sPHENIX, enables an extremely rich jet and beauty quarkonia physics program addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP), discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The startling dynamics of the QGP on fluid-like length scales is an emergent property of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), seemingly implicit in the Lagrangian but stubbornly hidden from view. QCD is an asymptotically free theory, but how QCD manifests as a strongly coupled fluid with specific shear viscosity near $T_C$, as low as allowed by the uncertainty principle, is as fundamental an issue as that of how confinement itself arises.

Holographic dark energy models with statefinder diagnostic in modified $f(R,T)$ gravity

We study non-viscous and viscous holographic dark energy models for a homogeneous and isotropic flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe in $f(R,T)$ gravity. We find that the Hubble horizon as an IR cut-off is suitable for both the models to explain the recent accelerated expansion of the Universe. The cosmological parameters like deceleration parameter and statefinder parameters are discussed in each model. In non-viscous model a constant deceleration parameter is found which shows that there is no phase transition. The constraints on the parameters are obtained to analyse the fixed point values of statefinder parameters of SCDM and $Λ$CDM models. We know that the phase transition is required to explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe and this is possible if both the parameters would be time-dependent. Therefore, we extend our analysis to viscous holographic dark energy model to investigate whether this viscous model with the same IR cut-off could be helpful to find the phase transition. We find that this model gives a time-dependent deceleration parameter which achieves a smooth phase transition of the Universe. We also find the time-varying statefinder pair which matches with $Λ$CDM model. We plot the trajectories in $r-s$ and $r-q$ plans to discriminate our model with the existing dark energy models and obtain the quintessence like behaviour for the suitable values of parameters.

Search for dark photons from neutral meson decays in $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV

The standard model (SM) of particle physics is spectacularly successful, yet the measured value of the muon anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_μ$ deviates from SM calculations by 3.6$σ$. Several theoretical models attribute this to the existence of a "dark photon," an additional U(1) gauge boson, which is weakly coupled to ordinary photons. The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has searched for a dark photon, $U$, in $π^0,η\rightarrow γe^+e^-$ decays and obtained upper limits of $\mathcal{O}(2\times10^{-6})$ on $U$-$γ$ mixing at 90% CL for the mass range $30<m_U<90$ MeV/$c^2$. Combined with other experimental limits, the remaining region in the $U$-$γ$ mixing parameter space that can explain the $(g-2)_μ$ deviation from its SM value is nearly completely excluded at the 90% confidence level, with only a small region of $29<m_U<32$ MeV/$c^2$ remaining.

Friedmann model with viscous cosmology in modified $f(R,T)$ gravity theory

In this paper, we introduce bulk viscosity in the formalism of modified gravity theory in which the gravitational action contains a general function $f(R,T)$, where $R$ and $T$ denote the curvature scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively within the framework of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model. As an equation of state for prefect fluid, we take $p=(γ-1)ρ$, where $0 \leq γ\leq 2$ and viscous term as a bulk viscosity due to isotropic model, of the form $ζ=ζ_{0}+ζ_{1}H$, where $ζ_{0}$ and $ζ_{1}$ are constants, and $H$ is the Hubble parameter. The exact non-singular solutions to the corresponding field equations are obtained with non- viscous and viscous fluids, respectively by assuming a simplest particular model of the form of $f(R,T) = R+2f(T)$, where $f(T)=αT$ ( $α$ is a constant). A big-rip singularity is also observed for $γ<0$ at a finite value of cosmic time under certain constraints. We study all possible scenarios with the possible positive and negative ranges of $α$ to analyze the expansion history of the universe. It is observed that the universe accelerates or exhibits transition from decelerated phase to accelerated phase under certain constraints of $ζ_0$ and $ζ_1$. We compare the viscous models with the non-viscous one through the graph plotted between scale factor and cosmic time and find that bulk viscosity plays the major role in the expansion of the universe. A similar graph is plotted for deceleration parameter with non-viscous and viscous fluids and find a transition from decelerated to accelerated phase with some form of bulk viscosity.

Nuclear matter effects on $J/ψ$ production in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV

We report on $J/ψ$ production from asymmetric Cu+Au heavy-ion collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at both forward (Cu-going direction) and backward (Au-going direction) rapidities. The nuclear modification of $J/ψ$ yields in Cu$+$Au collisions in the Au-going direction is found to be comparable to that in Au$+$Au collisions when plotted as a function of the number of participating nucleons. In the Cu-going direction, $J/ψ$ production shows a stronger suppression. This difference is comparable in magnitude and has the same sign as the difference expected from shadowing effects due to stronger low-$x$ gluon suppression in the larger Au nucleus. The relative suppression is opposite to that expected from hot nuclear matter dissociation, since a higher energy density is expected in the Au-going direction.

Charged Hadron Multiplicity Distribution at Relativistic Heavy Ion Colliders

The present article reviews facts and problems concerning charge hadron production in high energy collisions. Main emphasis is laid on the qualitative and quantitative description of general characteristics and properties observed for charged hadrons produced in such high energy collisions. Various features of available experimental data e.g., the variations of charged hadron multiplicity and pseudo-rapidity density with the mass number of colliding nuclei, center-of-mass energies and the collision centrality obtained from heavy-ion collider experiments are interpreted in the context of various theoretical concepts and their implications. Finally, several important scaling features observed in the measurements mainly at RHIC and LHC experiments are highlighted in the view of these models to draw some insight regarding the particle production mechanism in heavy-ion collisions.

Colour screening scenario for quarkonia suppression in a quasiparticle model compared with data obtained from experiments at the CERN SPS, BNL RHIC, and CERN LHC

We present a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) using quasi-particle model (QPM) as equation of state (EOS). Other theoretical ingredients incorporated in the model are feed-down from higher resonances namely, $χ_c$, and $ψ^{'}$, dilated formation time for quarkonia and viscous effects of the QGP medium. Assuming further that the QGP is expanding with Bjorken's hydrodynamical expansion, the present model is used to analyze the centrality dependence of the $J/ψ$ suppression in mid-rapidity region and compare it with the data obtained from SPS, RHIC and LHC experiments. We find that the centrality dependence of the data for the survival probability at all energies is well reproduced by our model. We further compare our model predictions with the results obtained from the bag model EOS for QGP which has usually been used earlier in all such calculations.

In this paper we study the effect of the magnetic field in string cosmology for a spatially homogenous and anisotropic Bianchi type -V space-time model. In order to study the effect of magnetic field, the standard form of the energy momentum tensor for cosmic strings is modified by including an additional term for magnetic field. The magnetic field is due to an electric current produced along the x-axis with infinite electrical conductivity. The field equations are solved for different string models such as geometric string (Nambu string), Takabayashi string (p-string) and Reddy string using string equation of state. We also find the solution for string models with uniform energy density. The physical and geometrical properties of each string model with and without magnetic field are discussed in detail.

Strongly Interacting Matter at Finite Chemical Potential : Hybrid Model Approach

Search for a proper and realistic equation of state (EOS) for strongly interacting matter used in the study of the QCD phase diagram still appears as a challenging problem. Recently, we constructed a hybrid model description for the quark gluon plasma (QGP) as well as hadron gas (HG) phases where we used an excluded volume model for HG and a thermodynamically consistent quasiparticle model for the QGP phase. The hybrid model suitably describes the recent lattice results of various thermodynamical as well as transport properties of the QCD matter at zero baryon chemical potential ($μ_{B}$). In this paper, we extend our investigations further in obtaining the properties of QCD matter at finite value of $μ_{B}$ and compare our results with the most recent results of lattice QCD calculation.

The effect of flow on Hadronic Spectra in an Excluded-Volume Model

Recently, we proposed a thermodynamically consistent excluded-volume model for the HG fireball and we noticed that our model gives a suitable description for various properties of multiparticle production and their ratios in the entire range of temperatures and baryon densities. The aim in this paper is to obtain the variations of freeze-out volume in a slice of unit rapidity i.e. $dV/dy$ as well as total volume of the fireball with respect to center-of-mass energy $(\sqrt{s_{NN}})$ and confront our model calculations with the corresponding thermal freeze-out volume obtained from the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) pion interferometry method. We also test the validity of our model in extracting the total multiplicities as well as the central rapidity densities of various hadrons and comparing them with the recent results. We further calculate the rapidity as well as transverse momentum spectra of various particles produced in different heavy-ion collider experiments in order to examine the role of flow by matching our predictions suitably with the available experimental results. Finally, we extend our analysis for the production of light nuclei, hypernuclei and their antinuclei over a broad energy range from Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies.

Transverse-energy distributions at midrapidity in $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$--200~GeV and implications for particle-production models

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/dη$, are presented for $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and additionally for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/dη$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants $N_{\rm part}$, number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$, and number of constituent-quark participants $N_{qp}$ calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au$+$Au, $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with $N_{\rm part}$, while $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, $dE_{T}/dη\propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}$, which has been used to represent $E_T$ distributions, is simply a proxy for $N_{qp}$, and that the $N_{\rm coll}$ term does not represent a hard-scattering component in $E_T$ distributions. The $dE_{T}/dη$ distributions of Au$+$Au and $d$$+$Au are then calculated from the measured $p$$+$$p$ $E_T$ distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au$+$Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the $d$$+$Au data, the additive-quark model does not.

Upsilon suppression at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in a modified color screening scenario

The suppression of heavy quarkonia e.g. $J/ψ$, $Υ$ etc. is considered as a suitable probe to identify the nature of the matter created in heavy ion collisions. Recently we have presented a modified colour screening model for $J/ψ$ suppression in the quark gluon plasma (QGP) using quasiparticle model as the equation of state. In this paper, we extend our model to calculate the anomalous suppression of various states of $Υ$ arising due to QGP medium alone. We obtain the suppression patterns of different bottomonia states with respect to centrality at various available collision energies and compare them with the available experimental data.

Wounded Quarks and Multiplicity at Relativistic Ion Colliders

In this paper, we propose a parameterization which is based on a phenomenological model involving the wounded quarks interactions for explaining the average charged particle multiplicity $\ < n_{ch}\ >$, the central pseudo-rapidity density $\ < (dn/dη)_{η=0}\ >$ and complete rapidity dependence of $dn/dη$ in relativistic heavy-ion collider experiments. The model also interrelates nucleus-nucleus (A-A) collisions with p-A and p-p interactions. Our parameterization rests on simple assumptions regarding mean number of participating quarks and their average number of collisions. The results for $\ < n_{ch}\ >$ and their variations with the mass number of colliding nuclei, center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$) and collision centrality are well supported by the available experimental data. Finally we give the predictions from our model for A-A collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiments. Our results indicate the existence of a possible universal production mechanism for p-p, p-A and A-A collisions.

Critical Point on the QCD Deconfining Phase Boundary

Ambiguities regarding the physics and the existence of the critical point (CP) on the QCD phase boundary still exist and the mist regarding the conjectured QCD phase boundary has not yet cleared. In this paper we extend our earlier study where we constructed a deconfining phase boundary using Gibbs' equilibrium conditions after using a quasiparticle equation of state (EOS) for quark gluon plasma (QGP) and an excluded volume EOS for the hadron gas (HG) and find the presence of a critical point on this phase boundary where the first order phase transition terminates. In this paper, we plot the difference in the normalized entropy density ($s/T^{3}$) between HG and QGP phases along the deconfining phase boundary and find that it vanishes at CP. Further we have shown the variation of the square of speed of sound ($c_{s}^{2}$) for the HG and QGP separately and find that the difference ($Δc_{s}^{2}$) between them along the deconfining phase boundary again vanishes at the CP of the boundary. We also plot the variation of shear viscosity to entropy density ratio ($η/s$) in HG as well as in QGP phases separately with respect to temperature at different baryonic chemical potential ($μ_{B}$). The presence of a cusp like structure in $η/s$ again confirms the existence of CP on the deconfining phase boundary as predicted by some authors. These studies thus firmly indicate the precise location of CP as a second order phase transition point.

Direct-Photon Production in p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV at Midrapidity

The differential cross section for the production of direct photons in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV at midrapidity was measured in the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Inclusive-direct photons were measured in the transverse-momentum range from 5.5--25 GeV/c, extending the range beyond previous measurements. Event structure was studied with an isolation criterion. Next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations give a good description of the spectrum. When the cross section is expressed versus x_T, the PHENIX data are seen to be in agreement with measurements from other experiments at different center-of-mass energies.

Erratum: Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for J/psi production in polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV [Phys. Rev. D 82, 112008 (2010)]

We previously reported [Phys. Rev. D 82, 112008 (2010)] measurements of transverse single-spin asymmetries, A_N, in J/psi production from transversely polarized p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in 2006 and 2008. Subsequently, we have found errors in the analysis procedures for the 2008 data, which resulted in an erroneous value for the extracted A_N. The errors affected the sorting of events into the correct left/right and forward/backward bins. This produced an incorrect value for the 2008 result, but the 2006 result is unaffected. We have conducted two independent reanalyses with these errors corrected, and we present here the corrected values for the 2008 data and the combined results for 2006 and 2008. The new combined spin asymmetry in the forward region is A_N = -0.026+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.003(sys). Since this asymmetry is consistent with zero, we no longer claim that our results suggest a possible non-zero trigluon correlation function in transversely polarized protons.

J/psi suppression at forward rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV

We present measurements of the J/psi invariant yields in sqrt(s_NN)=39 and 62.4 GeV Au+Au collisions at forward rapidity (1.2<|y|<2.2). Invariant yields are presented as a function of both collision centrality and transverse momentum. Nuclear modifications are obtained for central relative to peripheral Au+Au collisions (R_CP) and for various centrality selections in Au+Au relative to scaled p+p cross sections obtained from other measurements (R_AA). The observed suppression patterns at 39 and 62.4 GeV are quite similar to those previously measured at 200 GeV. This similar suppression presents a challenge to theoretical models that contain various competing mechanisms with different energy dependencies, some of which cause suppression and others enhancement.

Measurement of Direct Photons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

We report the measurement of direct photons at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 200 GeV. The direct photon signal was extracted for the transverse-momentum range of 4 GeV/c < p_T < 22 GeV/c, using a statistical method to subtract decay photons from the inclusive-photon sample. The direct-photon nuclear-modification factor R_AA was calculated as a function of p_T for different Au+Au collision centralities using the measured p+p direct-photon spectrum and compared to theoretical predictions. R_AA was found to be consistent with unity for all centralities over the entire measured p_T range. Theoretical models that account for modifications of initial-direct-photon production due to modified-parton-distribution functions in Au and the different isospin composition of the nuclei, predict a modest change of R_AA from unity and are consistent with the data. Models with compensating effects of the quark-gluon plasma on high-energy photons, such as suppression of jet-fragmentation photons and induced-photon bremsstrahlung from partons traversing the medium, are also consistent with this measurement.

Medium modification of jet fragmentation in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV measured in direct photon-hadron correlations

The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The p_T of the photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p_T of the jet and the ratio z_T=p_T^h/p_T^γis used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I_ AA, the ratio of jet fragment yield in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z_T. The fragment yield at low z_T is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles.

Prediction of Charged Hadron Multiplicity at LHC and CBM Experiments

A systematic study of charged hadron multiplicities ($n_{ch}$) at various collision energies is very much important in understanding the basic production mechanism of the hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collision experiments. Furthermore, the variations of $n_{ch}$ in nucleus-nucleus collisions with respect to the colliding energy and mass number can provide a potential probe for the formation of quark gluon plasma (QGP) in the laboratory. In this paper, we propose a phenomenological model based on the constituent quark-quark interactions to calculate the average multiplicity ($n_{ch}$) and pseudorapidity density at mid-rapidity ($(dn_{ch}/dη)_{η=0}$) of charged hadrons at various center-of-mass energies $(\sqrt{s_{NN}})$ for nucleus-nucleus ($A-A$) collisions. We first propose a new parametrization for $n_{ch}^{pp}$ and $(dn_{ch}/dη)^{pp}_{η=0}$ in $p-p$ interactions based on some initial inputs which fit the experimental data very well. We further extend this parametrization by using simple phenomenological assumptions regarding mean number of participating quarks and mean number of collisions to obtain the $n_{ch}$ and $(dn_{ch}/dη)_{η=0}$ for $A-A$ collisions and show their dependencies on the mass number of colliding nuclei as well as on $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. We also compare the results obtained from our model with the results obtained from the modified Glauber model in order to demonstrate the difference between the two formalisms. Finally, we compare the charged hadron multiplicity and pseudorapidity density at mid-rapidity for $A-A$ collisions obtained from our model with the available experimetal data from various heavy-ion collision experiments and give our predictions for $A-A$ collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and at Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiments.

Some Exact Solutions of Magnetized viscous model in String Cosmology

In this paper, we study anisotropic Bianchi-V universe with magnetic field and bulk viscous fluid in string cosmology. Exact solutions of the field equations are obtained by using the equation of state for a cloud of strings, and a relationship between bulk viscous coefficient and scalar expansion. The bulk viscous coefficient is assumed to be inversely proportional to the expansion scalar. It is interesting to examine the effects of magnetized bulk viscous string model in early and late stages of the evolution of the universe. This paper presents the different string models like geometrical (Nambu string), Takabayashi (p-string) and Reddy string models by taking certain physical conditions. We discuss the nature of the classical potential for viscous fluid with and without magnetic field. We find that the introduction of bulk viscosity with and without magnetic field results in rapid change in density parameters and in the classical potential. The presence of bulk viscosity prevents the universe to be empty in its future evolution. The other physical and geometrical aspects of each string model are discussed in detail.

sPHENIX: An Upgrade Concept from the PHENIX Collaboration

The PHENIX collaboration presents a concept for a major upgrade to the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). This upgrade, referred to as sPHENIX, brings exciting new capability to the RHIC program by opening new and important channels for experimental investigation and utilizing fully the luminosity of the recently upgraded RHIC facility. sPHENIX enables a compelling jet physics program that will address fundamental questions about the nature of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma discovered experimentally at RHIC to be a perfect fluid. The upgrade concept addresses specific questions whose answers are necessary to advance our understanding of the quark-gluon plasma: (1) How to reconcile the observed strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma with the asymptotically free theory of quarks and gluons? (2) What are the dynamical changes to the quark-gluon plasma in terms of quasiparticles and excitations as a function of temperature? (3) How sharp is the transition of the quark-gluon plasma from the most strongly coupled regime near Tc to a weakly coupled system of partons known to emerge at asymptotically high temperatures? In three Appendices, we detail the additional physics capabilities gained through further upgrades: (A) two midrapidity detector additions, (B) a forward rapidity upgrade, and (C) an evolution to an ePHENIX detector suitable for a future Electron Ion Collider at RHIC.

Viscous FRW model with particle creation in the early universe

We discuss the dynamical effects of bulk viscosity and particle creation on the early evolution of the Friedmann -Robertson -Walker model in the framework of open thermodynamical systems. We consider bulk viscosity and Particle creation as separate irreversible processes. Exact solutions of the Einstein field equations are obtained by using the "gamma-law" equation of state $p=(γ-1)ρ$, where the adiabatic parameter $γ$ varies with scale factor of the metric. We consider the cosmological model to study the early phases of the evolution of the universe as it goes from an inflationary phase to a radiation -dominated era in the presence of bulk viscosity and particle creation. Analytical solutions are obtained for particle number density and entropy for all models. It is seen that, by choosing appropriate functions for particle creation rate and bulk viscous coefficient, the models exhibit singular and non-singular beginnings.

Baryon-Size Dependent Location of QCD Critical Point

The physics regarding the existence of the critical end point (CEP) on the QCD phase boundary still remains unclear and its precise location is quite uncertain. In this paper we propose that the hard-core size of the baryons used in the description of the hot and dense hadron gas (HG) plays a decisive role in the existence of CEP. Here we construct a deconfining phase transition using Gibbs' equilibrium conditions after using a quasiparticle equation of state (EOS) for QCD plasma and excluded-volume EOS for the HG. We find that the first order transition results only when we assign a hard-core size to each baryon in the description of HG and the phase boundary thus obtained terminates at CEP beyond which a cross-over region occurs. The mean field approach for the HG lends support to this finding where unless we include an excluded-volume effect in the approach, CEP does not materialize on the QCD boundary. This investigation provides an intuitive reasoning regarding the origin of CEP and the cross-over transition on the QCD phase boundary.

Description of Hot and Dense Hadron Gas Properties in a New Excluded-Volume model

A new equation of state for a hot and dense hadron gas (HG) is obtained where the finite hard-core size of baryons has been incorporated in a thermodynamically consistent formulation of excluded volume correction. Our model differs from other existing approaches on the following points. We assign a hard-core volume only to each baryon and mesons though possess a small volume but they can fuse and interpenetrate into one another. Use of the full quantum statistics is made in obtaining the grand canonical partition function where excluded-volume correction has been incorporated by explicitly integrating over volume. We thus find that the new model works even for the cases of extreme temperatures and/or densities where most of other approaches fail. The model does not violate causality even at extreme densities. The temperature and density dependence of various thermodynamical quantities, e.g. pressure, baryon density, entropy and energy density compare well with the results of other microscopic HG models. After suitable parametrization of the centre-of-mass energy in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential, we explore some new freeze-out criteria which exhibit full independence of the collision energy and of the structures of the colliding nuclei. We further demonstrate the suitability of our model in explaining various experimental results of the multiplicity-ratios of various particles and their antiparticles. Finally, we use our excluded-volume model to obtain the transport behaviour of the hot and/or dense HG such as shear viscosity to entropy ratio, speed of sound etc. and compare the results with earlier calculations.

On Locating the Critical End Point in QCD Phase Diagram

We use the available two different self-consistent formulations of quasiparticle models and extend their applications for the description of quark gluon plasma (QGP) at non-vanishing baryon chemical potentials. The thermodynamical quantities calculated from these models are compared with the values obtained from lattice simulations and a good agreement between theoretical calculations and lattice QCD data suggests that the values of the parameters used in the paper are consistent. A new equation of state (EOS) for a gas of extended baryons and pointlike mesons is presented here which incorporates the repulsive hard-core interactions arising due to geometrical size of baryons. A first order deconfining phase transition is constructed using Gibb's equilibrium criteria between the hadron gas EOS and quasiparticle model EOS for the weakly interacting quark matter. This leads to an interesting finding that the phase transition line ends at a critical end point beyond which a crossover region exists in the phase diagram.

Production of omega mesons in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has measured omega meson production via leptonic and hadronic decay channels in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu, and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The invariant transverse momentum spectra measured in different decay modes give consistent results. Measurements in the hadronic decay channel in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions show that omega production has a suppression pattern at high transverse momentum, similar to that of pi^0 and eta in central collisions, but no suppression is observed in peripheral collisions. Suppression of back-to-back hadron pairs at forward rapidity in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

Back-to-back hadron pair yields in d+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV were measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Rapidity separated hadron pairs were detected with the trigger hadron at pseudorapidity |eta|<0.35 and the associated hadron at forward rapidity (deuteron direction, 3.0<eta<3.8). Pairs were also detected with both hadrons measured at forward rapidity; in this case the yield of back-to-back hadron pairs in d+Au collisions with small impact parameters is observed to be suppressed by a factor of 10 relative to p+p collisions. The kinematics of these pairs is expected to probe partons in the Au nucleus with low fraction x of the nucleon momenta, where the gluon densities rise sharply. The observed suppression as a function of nuclear thickness, p_T, and eta points to cold nuclear matter effects arising at high parton densities.

Cross Section and Parity Violating Spin Asymmetries of W^+/- Boson Production in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s)=500 GeV

Large parity violating longitudinal single spin asymmetries A^{e^-}_L= -0.86^{+0.14}_{-0.30} and A^{e^+}_L= 0.88^{+0.12}_{-0.71} are observed for inclusive high transverse momentum electrons and positrons in polarized pp collisions at a center of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=500\ GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. These e^{+/-} come mainly from the decay of W^{+/-} and Z^0 bosons, and the asymmetries directly demonstrate parity violation in the couplings of the W^{\pm} to the light quarks. Elliptic and hexadecapole flow of charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Differential measurements of the elliptic (v_2) and hexadecapole (v_4) Fourier flow coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality or the number of participant nucleons (N_part) for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The v_{2,4} measurements at pseudorapidity |η|<=0.35 obtained with four separate reaction plane detectors positioned in the range 1.0<|η|<3.9 show good agreement, indicating the absence of significant η-dependent nonflow perturbations. Sizable values for v_4(p_T) are observed with a ratio v_4(p_T,N_part)/v_2^2(p_T,N_part)~0.8 for 50<N_part<200, which is compatible with the combined effects of a finite viscosity and initial eccentricity fluctuations. Event Structure and Double Helicity Asymmetry in Jet Production from Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report on event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($A_LL$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured at midrapidity $|η| < 0.35$ with the requirement of a high-momentum ($>2$ GeV/$c$) photon in each event. Measured event structure is compared with {\sc pythia} and {\sc geant} simulations. The shape of jets and the underlying event were well reproduced at this collision energy. For the measurement of jet $A_{LL}$, photons and charged particles were clustered with a seed-cone algorithm to obtain the cluster $p_T$ sum ($p_T^{\rm reco}$). The effect of detector response and the underlying events on $p_T^{\rm reco}$ was evaluated with the simulation. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the NLO pQCD jet production cross section. For $4 < p_T^{\rm reco} < 12$ GeV/$c$ with an average beam polarization of $< P > = 49%$ we measured $A_{LL} = -0.0014 \pm 0.0037^{\rm stat}$ at the lowest $p_T^{\rm reco}$ bin (4-5 GeV/$c$) and $-0.0181 \pm 0.0282^{\rm stat}$ at the highest $p_T^{\rm reco}$ bin (10-12 GeV/$c$) with a beam polarization scale error of 9.4% and a $\pT$ scale error of 10%. Jets in the measured $p_T^{\rm reco}$ range arise primarily from hard-scattered gluons with momentum fraction $0.02 < x < 0.3$ according to {\sc pythia}. The measured $A_{LL}$ is compared with predictions that assume various $ΔG(x)$ distributions based on the GRSV parameterization. The present result imposes the limit $-1.1 < \int_{0.02}^{0.3}dx ΔG(x, μ^2 = 1 {\rm GeV}^2) < 0.4$ at 95% confidence level or $\int_{0.02}^{0.3}dx ΔG(x, μ^2 = 1 {\rm GeV}^2) < 0.5$ at 99% confidence level.

Measurement of neutral mesons in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV and scaling properties of hadron production

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of K^0_S , ω, ηprime, and ϕmesons in p + p collisions at = 200 GeV. Measurements ωand ϕproduction in different decay channels give consistent results. New results for the ϕare in agreement with previously published data and extend the measured pT coverage. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions measured by PHENIX are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, n and T, determining the high-pT and characterizing the low-pT regions of the spectra, respectively. The values of these parameters are very similar for all analyzed meson spectra, but with a lower parameter T extracted for protons. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Measurement of Transverse Single-Spin Asymmetries for J/psi Production in Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report the first measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries in $J/ψ$ production from transversely polarized $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV with data taken by the PHENIX experiment in 2006 and 2008. The measurement was performed over the rapidity ranges $1.2 < |y| < 2.2$ and $ |y| < 0.35$ for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/$c$. $J/ψ$ production at RHIC is dominated by processes involving initial-state gluons, and transverse single-spin asymmetries of the $J/ψ$ can provide access to gluon dynamics within the nucleon. Such asymmetries may also shed light on the long-standing question in QCD of the $J/ψ$ production mechanism. Asymmetries were obtained as a function of $J/ψ$ transverse momentum and Feynman-$x$, with a value of $-0.086 \pm 0.026^{\rm stat} \pm 0.003^{\rm syst}$ in the forward region. This result suggests possible nonzero trigluon correlation functions in transversely polarized protons and, if well defined in this reaction, a nonzero gluon Sivers distribution function.

Nuclear modification factors of phi mesons in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R_AA for Au+Au and Cu+Cu, and R_dA for d+Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1<p_T<7 GeV/c) and centrality. In central and mid-central Au+Au collisions, the R_AA of phi exhibits a suppression relative to expectations from binary scaled p+p results. The amount of suppression is smaller than that of the neutral pion and the eta meson in the intermediate p_T range (2--5 GeV/c); whereas at higher p_T the phi, pi^0, and eta show similar suppression. The baryon (protons and anti-protons) excess observed in central Au+Au collisions at intermediate p_T is not observed for the phi meson despite the similar mass of the proton and the phi. This suggests that the excess is linked to the number of constituent quarks rather than the hadron mass. The difference gradually disappears with decreasing centrality and for peripheral collisions the R_AA values for both particles are consistent with binary scaling. Cu+Cu collisions show the same yield and suppression as Au+Au collisions for the same number of N_part. The R_dA of phi shows no evidence for cold nuclear effects within uncertainties.

QCD Critical Point in a Quasiparticle Model

Recent theoretical investigations have unveiled a rich structure in the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram which consists of quark gluon plasma (QGP) and the hadronic phases but also supports the existence of a cross-over transition ending at a critical end point (CEP). We find a too large variation in determination of the coordinates of the CEP in the temperature (T), baryon chemical potential ($μ_{B}$) plane and, therefore, its identification in the current heavy-ion experiments becomes debatable. Here we use an equation of state (EOS) for a deconfined QGP using a thermodynamically consistent quasiparticle model involving quarks and gluons having thermal masses. We further use a thermodynamically consistent excluded volume model for the hadron gas (HG) which was recently proposed by us. Using these equations of state, a first order deconfining phase transition is constructed using Gibbs' criteria. This leads to an interesting finding that the phase transition line ends at a critical point (CEP) beyond which a cross-over region exists. Using our thermal HG model, we obtain a chemical freeze out curve and we find that the CEP lies in close proximity to this curve as proposed by some authors. The coordinates of CEP are found to lie within the reach of RHIC experiment.

Suppression of away-side jet fragments with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Pair correlations between large transverse momentum neutral pion triggers (p_T=4--7 GeV/c) and charged hadron partners (p_T=3--7 GeV/c) in central (0--20%) and midcentral (20--60%) Au+Au collisions are presented as a function of trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. The particles are at larger momentum than where jet shape modifications have been observed, and the correlations are sensitive to the energy loss of partons traveling through hot dense matter. An out-of-plane trigger particle produces only 26+/-20% of the away-side pairs that are observed opposite of an in-plane trigger particle. In contrast, near-side jet fragments are consistent with no suppression or dependence on trigger orientation with respect to the reaction plane. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a picture of little near-side parton energy loss either due to surface bias or fluctuations and increased away-side parton energy loss due to a long path through the medium. The away-side suppression as a function of reaction-plane angle is shown to be sensitive to both the energy loss mechanism in and the space-time evolution of heavy-ion collisions.

Transverse momentum dependence of eta meson suppression in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

New measurements by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC for eta production at midrapidity as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions are presented. They indicate nuclear modification factors (R_AA) that are similar both in magnitude and trend to those found in earlier pi^0 measurements. Linear fits to R_AA in the 5--20 GeV/c p_T region show that the slope is consistent with zero within two standard deviations at all centralities although a slow rise cannot be excluded. Having different statistical and systematic uncertainties the pi^0 and eta measurements are complementary at high p_T; thus, along with the extended p_T range of these data they can provide additional constraints for theoretical modeling and the extraction of transport properties.

QCD Phase Boundary and Critical Point in a Bag Model Calculation

Location of critical point and mapping the QCD phase boundary still exists as one of the most interesting and studied problems of heavy-ion physics. A new equation of state (EOS) for a gas of extended baryons and pointlike mesons is presented here which accounts for the repulsive hard-core interactions arising due to the geometrical size of the baryons. A first order deconfining phase transition is obtained using Gibbs' equilibrium criteria and a bag model EOS for the weakly interacting quark matter. It is interesting to find that the phase transition line ends at a critical point beyond which a cross-over region exists between hot-dense meson gas and quark-antiquark gluon matter. Our curve resembles in shape closely with the predictions of the available lattice gauge calculations and also reproduces the conjectured phase boundary.

On the chemical freeze-out criteria in a hot and dense fireball

Intensive investigations of freeze-out criteria in a hot and dense fireball provide important information regarding particle emission from the fireball. A systematic comparison of these proposals is presented here in the framework of a thermodynamically consistent excluded volume model which has been found to describe the properties of hadron gas (HG) quite well. We find that the impact of excluded volume correction is considerably large and the average energy per hadron is 0.9 GeV, $n_b+n_{\bar b}$ stays nearly constant at 0.12/fm$^3$ and the normalized entropy density $s/T^3\approx 6$ in this model. Moreover, these values are independent of the beam or center-of-mass energy and also of the target and beam nuclei. In ideal HG model these quantities show substantial energy dependence. Further we have compared the predictions of various excluded volume models in the precise determination of these criteria and we find that the thermodynamically consistent excluded volume models give the best results. In addition, we find another important criterion that entropy per hadron has a constant value at 6 in our model. We hope that these findings will throw considerable light on the expansion dynamics and the bulk thermodynamic properties of the fireball before chemical freeze-out.
