A novel analysis method for excited states in lattice QCD - the nucleon case

We employ a novel method to analyze Euclidean correlation functions entering the calculation of hadron energies in lattice QCD. The method is based on the sampling of all possible solutions allowed by the spectral decomposition of the hadron correlators. We demonstrate the applicability of the method by studying the nucleon excited states in the positive and negative parity channels over a pion mass range of about 400~MeV to 150~MeV. The results are compared to the standard variational approach routinely used to study excited states within lattice QCD. The main advantage of our new approach is its ability to unambiguously determine all excited states for which the Euclidean time correlation function is sensitive on.

Measurements of the γ* p --> Δ(1232) reaction at low Q2

We report new p$(\vec{e},e^\prime p)π^\circ$ measurements in the $Δ^{+}(1232)$ resonance at the low momentum transfer region utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The mesonic cloud dynamics are predicted to be dominant and appreciably changing in this region while the momentum transfer is sufficiently low to be able to test chiral effective calculations. The results disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasonable agreement with dynamical calculations with pion cloud effects, chiral effective field theory and lattice calculations. The reported measurements suggest that improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements.

A novel method of data analysis for hadronic physics

A novel method for extracting physical parameters from experimental and simulation data is presented. The method is based on statistical concepts and it relies on Monte Carlo simulation techniques. It identifies and determines with maximal precision parameters that are sensitive to the data. The method has been extensively studied and it is shown to produce unbiased results. It is applicable to a wide range of scientific and engineering problems. It has been successfully applied in the analysis of experimental data in hadronic physics and of lattice QCD correlators.

The Shape of Hadrons

This colloquium addresses the issue of the shape of hadrons and in particular that of the proton. The concept of shape in the microcosm is critically examined. Special attention is devoted to properly define the meaning of shape for bound-state systems of near massless quarks. The ideas that lead to the expectation of non-sphericity in the shape of hadrons, the calculations that predict it, and the experimental information obtained from recent high-precision measurements are examined. Particular emphasis is given to the study of the electromagnetic transition between the nucleon and its first excited state, the $Δ$(1232)-resonance. The experimental evidence is is critically examined and compared with lattice calculations, as well as with effective-field theories and phenomenological models.

A novel method for the determination of hadron excited states in Lattice QCD applied to the nucleon

A novel method for the precise identification and determination of the energies that contribute in the spectral decomposition of lattice correlators is presented. The method is based on statistical concepts and it relies heavily on simulation techniques. The $η_c$ correlator is analyzed within this method and the results obtained are compared to a previous analysis based on Bayesian statistics. An analysis of the nucleon local two-point correlators leads to the identification of the excited states in the positive and negative channels. A discussion on the Roper is included.

Measurements of the Generalized Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton at Low Q2 Using the VCS Reaction

The mean square polarizability radii of the proton have been measured for the first time in a virtual Compton scattering experiment performed at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. Response functions and polarizabilities obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data at Q2=0.06 GeV2/c2 are in agreement with O(p3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The data support the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities, and the increase of beta with increasing Q2 is evidence for the cancellation of long-range diamagnetism by short-range paramagnetism from the pion cloud.

Search for Quadrupole Strength in the Electro-excitation of the Delta(1232)

High-precision H(e,e'p)pi0 measurements at Q2=0.126 (GeV/c)2 are reported, which allow the determination of quadrupole amplitudes in the gamma* N->Delta transition; they simultaneously test the reliability of electroproduction models. The derived quadrupole-to-dipole amplitude ratios, Rsm=(-6.5 +- 0.2{stat+sys} +- 2.5{mod}) % and Rem=(-2.1 +- 0.2{stat+sys} +- 2.0{mod}) %, are dominated by model error. Previous Rsm and Rem results should be reconsidered after the model uncertainties associated with the method of their extraction are taken into account.
