Extended hadron and two-hadron operators of definite momentum for spectrum calculations in lattice QCD

Multi-hadron operators are crucial for reliably extracting the masses of excited states lying above multi-hadron thresholds in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculations. The construction of multi-hadron operators with significant coupling to the lowest-lying multi-hadron states of interest involves combining single hadron operators of various momenta. The design and implementation of large sets of spatially-extended single-hadron operators of definite momentum and their combinations into two-hadron operators are described. The single hadron operators are all assemblages of gauge-covariantly-displaced, smeared quark fields. Group-theoretical projections onto the irreducible representations of the symmetry group of a cubic spatial lattice are used in all isospin channels. Tests of these operators on 24^3 x 128 and 32^3 x 256 anisotropic lattices using a stochastic method of treating the low-lying modes of quark propagation which exploits Laplacian Heaviside quark-field smearing are presented. The method provides reliable estimates of all needed correlations, even those that are particularly difficult to compute, such as eta eta -> eta eta in the scalar channel, which involves the subtraction of a large vacuum expectation value. A new glueball operator is introduced, and the evaluation of the mixing of this glueball operator with a quark-antiquark operator, pi-pi, and eta-eta operators is shown to be feasible.

Excited-State Hadrons using the Stochastic LapH Method

Progress in computing the spectrum of excited baryons and mesons in lattice QCD is described. Large sets of spatially-extended hadron operators are used. A new method of stochastically estimating the low-lying effects of quark propagation is utilized which allows reliable determinations of temporal correlations of both single-hadron and multi-hadron operators. The method is tested on the eta, sigma, omega mesons.

Progress Report on Computing Excited-State Hadron Masses in Lattice QCD

Our progress in computing the spectrum of excited baryons and mesons in lattice QCD is described. Sets of spatially-extended hadron operators with a variety of different momenta are used. A new method of stochastically estimating the low-lying effects of quark propagation is utilized which allows reliable determinations of temporal correlations of both single-hadron and multi-hadron operators. The method is tested on the isoscalar mesons in the scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector channels, and on the two-pion system of total isospin I=0,1,2.

Multi-hadron states in Lattice QCD spectroscopy

The ability to reliably measure the energy of an excited hadron in Lattice QCD simulations hinges on the accurate determination of all lower-lying energies in the same symmetry channel. These include not only single-particle energies, but also the energies of multi-hadron states. This talk deals with the determination of multi-hadron energies in Lattice QCD. The group-theoretical derivation of lattice interpolating operators that couple optimally to multi-hadron states is described. We briefly discuss recent algorithmic developments which allow for the efficient implementation of these operators in software, and present numerical results from the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration.

Nucleon, $Δ$ and $Ω$ excited states in $N_f=2+1$ lattice QCD

The energies of the excited states of the Nucleon, $Δ$ and $Ω$ are computed in lattice QCD, using two light quarks and one strange quark on anisotropic lattices. The calculation is performed at three values of the light quark mass, corresponding to pion masses $m_π$ = 392(4), 438(3) and 521(3) MeV. We employ the variational method with a large basis of interpolating operators enabling six energies in each irreducible representation of the lattice to be distinguished clearly. We compare our calculation with the low-lying experimental spectrum, with which we find reasonable agreement in the pattern of states. The need to include operators that couple to the expected multi-hadron states in the spectrum is clearly identified.

The excited hadron spectrum in lattice QCD using a new method of estimating quark propagation

Progress in determining the spectrum of excited baryons and mesons in lattice QCD is described. Large sets of carefully-designed hadron operators have been studied and their effectiveness in facilitating the extraction of excited-state energies is demonstrated. A new method of stochastically estimating the low-lying effects of quark propagation is proposed which will allow reliable determinations of temporal correlations of single-hadron and multi-hadron operators.

Glueball Spectrum and Matrix Elements on Anisotropic Lattices

The glueball-to-vacuum matrix elements of local gluonic operators in scalar, tensor, and pseudoscalar channels are investigated numerically on several anisotropic lattices with the spatial lattice spacing ranging from 0.1fm - 0.2fm. These matrix elements are needed to predict the glueball branching ratios in $J/ψ$ radiative decays which will help identify the glueball states in experiments. Two types of improved local gluonic operators are constructed for a self-consistent check and the finite volume effects are studied. We find that lattice spacing dependence of our results is very weak and the continuum limits are reliably extrapolated, as a result of improvement of the lattice gauge action and local operators. We also give updated glueball masses with various quantum numbers.

Group-theoretical construction of extended baryon operators in lattice QCD

The design and implementation of large sets of spatially-extended, gauge-invariant operators for use in determining the spectrum of baryons in lattice QCD computations are described. Group-theoretical projections onto the irreducible representations of the symmetry group of a cubic spatial lattice are used in all isospin channels. The operators are constructed to maximize overlaps with the low-lying states of interest, while minimizing the number of sources needed in computing the required quark propagators. Issues related to the identification of the spin quantum numbers of the states in the continuum limit are addressed.

Analysis of $N^{\star}$ spectra using matrices of correlation functions based on irreducible baryon operators

We present results for ground and excited-state nucleon masses in quenched lattice QCD using anisotropic lattices. Group theoretical constructions of local and nonlocal straight-link irreducible operators are used to obtain suitable sources and sinks. Matrices of correlation functions are diagonalized to determine the eigenvectors. Both chi-square fitting and Bayesian inference with an entropic prior are used to extract masses from the correlation functions in a given channel. We observe clear separation of the excited state masses from the ground state mass. States of spin >= 5/2 have been isolated by use of G_2 operators.

Baryonic sources using irreducible representations of the double-covered octahedral group

Irreducible representations (IRs) of the double-covered octahedral group are used to construct lattice source and sink operators for three-quark baryons. The goal is to achieve a good coupling to higher spin states as well as ground states. Complete sets of local and nonlocal straight-link operators are explicitly shown for isospin 1/2 and 3/2 baryons. The orthogonality relations of the IR operators are confirmed in a quenched lattice simulation.

Baryon operators and spectroscopy in lattice QCD

The construction of the operators and correlators required to determine the excited baryon spectrum is presented, with the aim of exploring the spatial and spin structure of the states while minimizing the number of propagator inversions. The method used to construct operators that transform irreducibly under the symmetries of the lattice is detailed, and the properties of example operators are studied using domain-wall fermion valence propagators computed on MILC asqtad dynamical lattices.

Baryonic Operators for Lattice Simulations

The construction of baryonic operators for determining the N* excitation spectrum is discussed. The operators are designed with one eye towards maximizing overlaps with the low-lying states of interest, and the other eye towards minimizing the number of sources needed in computing the required quark propagators. Issues related to spin identification are outlined. Although we focus on tri-quark baryon operators, the construction method is applicable to both mesons and penta-quark operators.

Scaling of the B and D meson spectrum in lattice QCD

We give results for the $B$ and the $D$ meson spectrum using NRQCD on the lattice in the quenched approximation. The masses of radially and orbitally excited states are calculated as well as $S$-wave hyperfine and $P$-wave fine structure. Radially excited $P$-states are observed for the first time. Radial and orbital excitation energies match well to experiment, as does the strange-non-strange $S$-wave splitting. We compare the light and heavy quark mass dependence of various splittings to experiment. Our $B$-results cover a range in lattice spacings of more than a factor of two. Our $D$-results are from a single lattice spacing and we compare them to numbers in the literature from finer lattices using other methods. We see no significant dependence of physical results on the lattice spacing. PACS: 11.15.Ha 12.38.Gc 14.40.Lb 14.40.Nd

Sea quark effects in B Spectroscopy and Decay Constants

We present comprehensive results for the spectrum and decay constants of hadrons containing a single b quark. The heavy quark is simulated using an $O(1/M)$ NRQCD action and the light quark using the $O(a)$ tadpole-improved clover action on gauge configurations containing two degenerate flavours of sea quarks at $β^{n_f=2}=5.6$ provided by the HEMCGC collaboration. We present detailed results for the lower lying $S$ and $P$ wave $B$ meson states and the $Λ_b$ baryon. We find broad agreement with experiment. In addition, we present results for the pseudoscalar and, for the first time, the vector decay constants fully consistent to $O(α/M): f_B = 186(5)(stat)(19)(pert)(9)(disc)(13)(NRQCD)(+50)(a^{-1})MeV, f_B^* = 181(6) (stat)(18)(pert)(9)(disc)(13)(NRQCD)(+55)(a^{-1})MeV$ and $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.14(2)(stat)(-2)(κ_s)$. We present an investigation of sea quark effects in the $B$ spectrum and decay constants. We compare our results with those from similar quenched simulations at $β^{n_f=0}=6.0$. For the spectrum, the quenched results reproduce the experimental spectrum well and there is no significant difference between the quenched and $n_f=2$ results. For the decay constants, our results suggest that sea quark effects may be large. We find that $f_B$ increases by approximately 25% between $n_f=0$ and $n_f=2$.

B Meson Decay Constants From NRQCD

We present quenched results for B meson decay constants using NRQCD b quarks and O(a) tadpole improved clover light quarks. For the first time, one-loop matching factors between lattice and continuum currents are incorporated through O(α/M) taking operator mixing fully into account. This includes an important O(αa) discretization correction to the heavy-light axial vector current. We find f_B = 0.147(11)(^{+8}_{-12})(9)(6) MeV and f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.20(4)(^{+4}_{-0}). Heavy-Light Mesons with Quenched Lattice NRQCD: Results on Decay Constants

We present a quenched lattice calculation of heavy-light meson decay constants, using non-relativistic (NRQCD) heavy quarks in the mass region of the $b$ quark and heavier, and clover-improved light quarks. The NRQCD Hamiltonian and the heavy-light current include the corrections at first order in the expansion in the inverse heavy quark mass. We study the dependence of the decay constants on the heavy meson mass $M$, for light quarks with the tree level ($c_{SW}$ = 1), as well as the tadpole improved clover coefficient. We compare decay constants from NRQCD with results from clover ($c_{SW}=1$) heavy quarks. Having calculated the current renormalisation constant $Z_A$ in one-loop perturbation theory, we demonstrate how the heavy mass dependence of the pseudoscalar decay constants changes after renormalisation. For the first time, we quote a result for $f_B$ from NRQCD including the full one-loop matching factors at $O(α/M)$.
