Volumetric locking-free Mixed Virtual Element Methods for Contact Problems

We consider the approximation of the 2D frictionless contact problem in elasticity using the Virtual Element Methods (VEMs). To overcome the volumetric locking phenomenon in the nearly incompressible case, we adopt a mixed displacement/pressure ($u/p$) variational formulation, where pressure is introduced as an independent unknown. We present the VEM discretization and develop a general error analysis, keeping explicit track of the constants involved in the error estimates, thus allowing to consider meshes with "small edges". As examples, we consider two possible VEM schemes: a first-order scheme and a second-order scheme. The numerical results confirm the theoretical predictions, specifically both schemes show: 1) robustness with respect to the volumetric parameter $λ$, thus preventing the occurrence of the volumetric locking phenomenon; 2) good behavior even in the presence of "small edges"; 3) achievement of the expected theoretical convergence rates.

A three-dimensional Hellinger-Reissner Virtual Element Method for linear elasticity problems

We present a Virtual Element Method for the 3D linear elasticity problems, based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. In the framework of the small strain theory, we propose a low-order scheme with a-priori symmetric stresses and continuous tractions across element interfaces. A convergence and stability analysis is developed and we confirm the theoretical predictions via some numerical tests.

Divergence free Virtual Elements for the Stokes problem on polygonal meshes

In the present paper we develop a new family of Virtual Elements for the Stokes problem on polygonal meshes. By a proper choice of the Virtual space of velocities and the associated degrees of freedom, we can guarantee that the final discrete velocity is pointwise divergence-free, and not only in a relaxed (projected) sense, as it happens for more standard elements. Moreover, we show that the discrete problem is immediately equivalent to a reduced problem with less degrees of freedom, thus yielding a very efficient scheme. We provide a rigorous error analysis of the method and several numerical tests, including a comparison with a different Virtual Element choice.

An isogeometric method for the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem

We present a new isogeometric method for the discretization of the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem. The proposed scheme follows a recent theoretical framework that makes possible to construct a space of smooth discrete deflections $W_h$ and a space of smooth discrete rotations $\Rots_h$ such that the Kirchhoff contstraint is exactly satisfied at the limit. Therefore we obtain a formulation which is natural from the theoretical/mechanical viewpoint and locking free by construction.
