Reversible to Irreversible Transitions in Pattern-Forming Systems with Cyclic Interactions

Transitions from reversible to irreversible or fluctuating states above a critical density and shear amplitude have been extensively studied in non-thermal cyclically sheared suspensions and amorphous solids. Here, we propose that the same type of reversible to irreversible transition occurs for a system of particles with competing short-range attraction and long-range repulsion, which can form crystals, stripes, and bubbles as the ratio of attraction to repulsion varies. By oscillating the strength of the attractive part of the potential, we find that the system can organize into either time-periodic states consisting of nondiffusive complex closed orbits, or into a diffusive fluctuating state. A critical point separates these states as a function of the maximum strength of the attraction, oscillation frequency, and particle density. We also find a re-entrant behavior of the reversible state as a function of the strength of the attraction and the oscillation frequency.

Soliton Motion in Skyrmion Chains

Using a particle-based model we examine the depinning motion of solitons in skyrmion chains in quasi-one dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) systems containing embedded 1D interfaces. The solitons take the form of a particle or hole in a commensurate chain of skyrmions. Under an applied drive, just above a critical depinning threshold the soliton moves with a skyrmion Hall angle of zero. For higher drives, the entire chain depins, and in a 2D system we observe that both the solitons and chain move at zero skyrmion Hall angle and then transition to a finite skyrmion Hall angle as the drive increases. In a 2D system with a 1D interface that is at an angle to the driving direction, there can be a reversal of the sign of the skyrmion Hall angle from positive to negative. Our results suggest that solitons in skyrmion systems could be used as information carriers in racetrack geometries that would avoid the drawbacks of finite skyrmion Hall angles. The soliton states become mobile at significantly lower drives than the depinning transition of the skyrmion chains themselves.

Noise spectra in the reversible-irreversible transition in amorphous solids under oscillatory driving

We study the stress fluctuations in simulations of a two-dimensional amorphous solid under a cyclic drive. It is known that this system organizes into a reversible state for small driving amplitudes and remains in an irreversible state for high driving amplitudes, and that a critical driving amplitude separates the two regimes. Here we study the time series of the stress fluctuations below and above the reversible-irreversible transition. In the irreversible regime above the transition, the power spectrum of the stress fluctuations is broad and has a $1/f^α$ shape with $1< α<2$. We find that the low frequency noise power peaks near the stress at which dc yielding occurs, which is consistent with the behavior expected in systems undergoing a non-equilibrium phase transition.

Quenched Dynamics of Artificial Spin Ice: Coarsening versus Kibble-Zurek

Artificial spin ices are ideal frustrated model systems in which to explore or design emergent phenomena with unprecedented characterization of the constituent degrees of freedom. In square spin ice, violations of the ice rule are topological excitations essential to the kinetics of the system, providing an ideal testbed for studying the dynamics of such defects under varied quench rates. In this work we describe the first test of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and critical coarsening in colloidal square and colloidal hexagonal ice under quenches from a weakly interacting liquid state into a strongly interacting regime. As expected, for infinitely slow quenches, the system is defect free, while for increasing quench rate, an increasing number of defects remain in the sample. For square ice, we find regimes in which the defect population decreases as a power law with decreasing quench rate. A detailed scaling analysis shows that for a wide range of parameters, including quench rates that are accessible by experiments, the behavior is described by critical coarsening rather than by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, since the defect-defect interactions are long ranged. For quenches closer to the critical point, however, there can be a competition between the two mechanisms.
