Large Extra Dimensions and neutrino experiments

The existence of Large Extra Dimensions can be probed in various neutrino experiments. We analyze several neutrino data sets in a model with a dominant large extra dimension. We show that the Gallium anomaly can be explained with neutrino oscillations induced by the large extra dimension, but the region of parameter space which is preferred by the Gallium anomaly is in tension with the bounds from reactor rate data, as well as the data of Daya Bay and MINOS. We also present bounds obtained from the analysis of the KATRIN data. We show, that current experiments can put strong bounds on the size $R_{\text{ED}}$ of the extra dimension: $R_{\text{ED}} < 0.20~μ\text{m}$ and $R_{\text{ED}} < 0.10~μ\text{m}$ at 90\% C.L. for normal and inverted ordering of the standard neutrino masses, respectively.

Probing light mediators and $(g-2)_μ$ through detection of coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering at COHERENT

We present the constraints on the parameters of several light boson mediator models obtained from the analysis of the current data of the COHERENT CE$ν$NS experiment. We consider a variety of vector boson mediator models: the so-called universal, the $B-L$ and other anomaly-free $U(1)'$ gauge models with direct couplings of the new vector boson with neutrinos and quarks, and the anomaly-free $L_e-L_μ$, $L_e-L_τ$, and $L_μ-L_τ$ gauge models where the coupling of the new vector boson with the quarks is generated by kinetic mixing with the photon at the one-loop level. We consider also a model with a new light scalar boson mediator that is assumed, for simplicity, to have universal coupling with quarks and leptons. Since the COHERENT CE$ν$NS data are well-fitted with the cross section predicted by the Standard Model, the analysis of the data yields constraints for the mass and coupling of the new boson mediator that depend on the charges of quarks and neutrinos in each model under consideration. We compare these constraints with the limits obtained in other experiments and with the values that can explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly in the models where the muon couples to the new boson mediator.

Reactor antineutrino anomaly in light of recent flux model refinements

We study the status of the reactor antineutrino anomaly in light of recent reactor flux models obtained with the conversion and summation methods. We present a new improved calculation of the IBD yields of the standard Huber-Mueller (HM) model and those of the new models. We show that the reactor rates and the fuel evolution data are consistent with the predictions of the Kurchatov Institute (KI) conversion model and with those of the Estienne-Fallot (EF) summation model, leading to a plausible robust demise of the reactor antineutrino anomaly. We show that the results of several goodness of fit tests favor the KI and EF models over other models that we considered. We also discuss the implications of the new reactor flux models for short-baseline neutrino oscillations due to active-sterile oscillations. We show that reactor data give upper bounds on active-sterile neutrino mixing that are not very different for the reactor flux models under consideration and are in tension with the large mixing required by the Gallium anomaly that has been refreshed by the recent results of the BEST experiment.

Short-baseline oscillation scenarios at JUNO and TAO

We study the sensitivity of JUNO and TAO to the oscillations induced by two well-motivated scenarios beyond the standard model: Large Extra Dimensions (LED) and light sterile neutrinos in the context of 3+1 neutrino mixing. We find that JUNO+TAO can set competitive bounds on the parameter space of each scenario. In particular, we find that JUNO+TAO can be competitive with MINOS, DUNE or KATRIN in the context of LED. If LED are present in nature, we show that the parameters could be measured with a similar precision as the standard oscillation parameters. We also show that JUNO+TAO can test nearly all of the parameter space preferred by Gallium experiments in the context of 3+1 mixing. Finally, we discuss the possibility to distinguish the two scenarios from each other.

Constraints on light vector mediators through coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering data from COHERENT

We present new constraints on three different models, the so-called universal, $B-L$ and $L_μ-L_τ$ models, involving a yet to be observed light vector $Z'$ mediator, by exploiting the recent observation of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) in argon and cesium-iodide performed by the COHERENT Collaboration. We compare the results obtained from a combination of the above data sets with the limits derived from searches in fixed target, accelerator, solar neutrino and reactor CE$ν$NS experiments, and with the parameter region that could explain the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We show that for the universal and the $B-L$ models, the COHERENT data allow us to put stringent limits in the light vector mediator mass, $M_{Z'}$, and coupling, $g_{Z'}$, parameter space.

New insights into nuclear physics and weak mixing angle using electroweak probes

Using the new results on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data in cesium-iodide provided by the COHERENT experiment, we determine a new measurement of the average neutron rms radius of $^{133}\text{Cs}$ and $^{127}\text{I}$. In combination with the atomic parity violation (APV) experimental result, we derive the most precise measurement of the neutron rms radii of $^{133}\text{Cs}$ and $^{127}\text{I}$, disentangling for the first time the contributions of the two nuclei. By exploiting these measurements we determine the corresponding neutron skin values for $^{133}\text{Cs}$ and $^{127}\text{I}$. These results suggest a preference for models which predict large neutron skin values, as corroborated by the only other electroweak measurements of the neutron skin of $^{208}\text{Pb}$ performed by PREX experiments. Moreover, for the first time, we obtain a data-driven APV+COHERENT measurement of the low-energy weak mixing angle with a percent uncertainty, independent of the value of the average neutron rms radius of $^{133}\text{Cs}$ and $^{127}\text{I}$, that is allowed to vary freely in the fit. The value of the low-energy weak mixing angle that we found is slightly larger than the standard model prediction.

General COHERENT Constraints on Neutrino Non-Standard Interactions

We present the results of a systematic study of the constraints on neutrino neutral-current non-standard interactions (NSI) that can be obtained from the analysis of the COHERENT spectral and temporal data. First, we consider the general case in which all the ten relevant neutral-current NSI parameters are considered as free. We show that they are very weakly constrained by the COHERENT data because of possible cancellations between the up and down quark contributions. However, the up-down average parameters are relatively well constrained and the strongest constraints are obtained for an appropriate linear combination of up and down NSI parameters. We also consider the case in which there are only NSI with either up or down quarks, and we show that the LMA-Dark fit of solar neutrino data is excluded at $5.6σ$ and $7.2σ$ respectively, for NSI with up and down quark. We finally present the tight constraints that can be obtained on each NSI parameter if it is the dominant one, assuming that the effects of the others are negligible.

KATRIN bound on 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing and the reactor antineutrino anomaly

We present the bounds on 3+1 active-sterile neutrino mixing obtained from the first results of the KATRIN experiment. We show that the KATRIN data extend the Mainz and Troitsk bound to smaller values of $Δ{m}^2_{41}$ for large mixing and improves the exclusion of the large-$Δ{m}^2_{41}$ solution of the Huber-Muller reactor antineutrino anomaly. We also show that the combined bound of the Mainz, Troitsk, and KATRIN tritium experiments and the Bugey-3, NEOS, PROSPECT, and DANSS reactor spectral ratio measurements exclude most of the region in the ($\sin^2\!2\vartheta_{ee},Δ{m}^2_{41}$) plane allowed by the Huber-Muller reactor antineutrino anomaly. Considering two new calculations of the reactor neutrino fluxes, we show that one, that predicts a lower $^{235}\text{U}$ neutrino flux, is in agreement with the tritium and reactor spectral ratio measurements, whereas the other leads to a larger tension than the Huber-Muller prediction. We also show that the combined reactor spectral ratio and tritium measurements disfavor the Neutrino-4 indication of large active-sterile mixing. We finally discuss the constraints on the gallium neutrino anomaly.

Neutrino Charge Radii from COHERENT Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering is a powerful probe of neutrino properties, in particular of the neutrino charge radii. We present the bounds on the neutrino charge radii obtained from the analysis of the data of the COHERENT experiment. We show that the time information of the COHERENT data allows us to restrict the allowed ranges of the neutrino charge radii. We also obtained for the first time bounds on the neutrino transition charge radii, which are quantities beyond the Standard Model.

Physics results from the first COHERENT observation of CE$ν$NS in argon and their combination with cesium-iodide data

We present the results on the radius of the neutron distribution in $^{40}\text{Ar}$, on the low-energy value of the weak mixing angle, and on the electromagnetic properties of neutrinos obtained from the analysis of the coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering data in argon recently published by the COHERENT collaboration, taking into account proper radiative corrections. We present also the results of the combined analysis of the COHERENT argon and cesium-iodide data for the determination of the low-energy value of the weak mixing angle and the electromagnetic properties of neutrinos. In particular, the COHERENT argon data allow us to improve significantly the only existing laboratory bounds on the electric charge $q_{μμ}$ of the muon neutrino and on the transition electric charge $q_{μτ}$.

Statistical Significance of Reactor Antineutrino Active-Sterile Oscillations

We performed Monte Carlo calculations of the statistical distribution of the $χ^2$ test statistic used in the analysis of the data of the NEOS, DANSS, Bugey-3, and PROSPECT short-baseline reactor experiments. We show that the statistical significance of the NEOS and DANSS indications in favor of active-sterile neutrino oscillations is smaller than that obtained with the usual method based on the $χ^2$ distribution. In the combined analysis of the data of the four experiments we find that the statistical significance of active-sterile neutrino oscillations is reduced from $2.4σ$ to $1.8σ$.

Neutrino, Electroweak and Nuclear Physics from COHERENT Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering with a New Quenching Factor

We present an updated analysis of the coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering data of the COHERENT experiment taking into account the new quenching factor published recently in Phys. Rev. D100, 033003 (2019). Through a fit of the COHERENT time-integrated energy spectrum, we show that the new quenching factor leads to a better determination of the average rms radius of the neutron distributions of $^{133}\text{Cs}$ and $^{127}\text{I}$, while in combination with the atomic parity violation (APV) experimental results it allows to determine a data-driven APV measurement of the low-energy weak mixing angle in very good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. We also find a $3.7σ$ evidence of the suppression of coherence due to the nuclear structure. Neutrino properties are better constrained by considering the COHERENT time-dependent spectral data, that allow us to improve the bounds on the neutrino charge radii and magnetic moments. We also present for the first time constraints on the neutrino charges obtained with coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering data. In particular, we obtain the first laboratory constraints on the diagonal charge of $ν_μ$ and the $ν_μ$-$ν_τ$ transition charge.

Assessing the role of nuclear effects in the interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly

We study the impact of the effect of multinucleon interactions in the reconstruction of the neutrino energy on the fit of the MiniBooNE data in terms of neutrino oscillations. We obtain some improvement of the fit of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess in the framework of two-neutrino oscillations and a shift of the allowed region in the $\sin^2 2\vartheta$--$Δ{m}^2$ plane towards smaller values of $\sin^2 2\vartheta$ and larger values of $Δ{m}^2$. However this effect is not enough to solve the problem of the appearance-disappearance tension in the global fit of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data.

Light sterile neutrino sensitivity of 163Ho experiments

We explore the sensitivity of $^{163}$Ho electron capture experiments to neutrino masses in the standard framework of three-neutrino mixing and in the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing with a sterile neutrino which mixes with the three standard active neutrinos, as indicated by the anomalies found in short-baseline neutrino oscillations experiments. We calculate the sensitivity to neutrino masses and mixing for different values of the energy resolution of the detectors, of the unresolved pileup fraction and of the total statistics of events, considering the expected values of these parameters in the two planned stages of the ECHo project (ECHo-1k and ECHo-1M). We show that an extension of the ECHo-1M experiment with the possibility to collect $10^{16}$ events will be competitive with the KATRIN experiment. This statistics will allow to explore part of the 3+1 mixing parameter space indicated by the global analysis of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. In order to cover all the allowed region, a statistics of about $10^{17}$ events will be needed.

Appearance-Disappearance Relation in 3+$N_{s}$ Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations

We derive the relation between the amplitudes of short-baseline appearance and disappearance oscillations in 3+$N_{s}$ neutrino mixing schemes which is the origin of the appearance-disappearance tension that is found from the analysis of the existing data in any 3+$N_{s}$ neutrino mixing scheme. We illustrate the power of the relation to reveal the appearance-disappearance tension in the cases of 3+1 and 3+2 mixing using the results of global fits of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data.

Light sterile neutrinos

The theory and phenomenology of light sterile neutrinos at the eV mass scale is reviewed. The reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies are briefly described and interpreted as indications of the existence of short-baseline oscillations which require the existence of light sterile neutrinos. The global fits of short-baseline oscillation data in 3+1 and 3+2 schemes are discussed, together with the implications for beta-decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay. The cosmological effects of light sterile neutrinos are briefly reviewed and the implications of existing cosmological data are discussed. The review concludes with a summary of future perspectives.

Light Sterile Neutrinos and Inflationary Freedom

We perform a cosmological analysis in which we allow the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations to assume a shape that is different from the usual power-law predicted by the simplest models of cosmological inflation. We parameterize the free primordial power spectrum with a "piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial" (PCHIP). We consider a 3+1 neutrino mixing model with a sterile neutrino having a mass at the eV scale, which can explain the anomalies observed in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We find that the freedom of the primordial power spectrum allows to reconcile the cosmological data with a fully thermalized sterile neutrino in the early Universe. Moreover, the cosmological analysis gives us some information on the shape of the primordial power spectrum, which presents a feature around the wavenumber $k=0.002\,\text{Mpc}^{-1}$.

Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay: a Probe of Physics Beyond the Standard Model

In the Standard Model the total lepton number is conserved. Thus, neutrinoless double-beta decay, in which the total lepton number is violated by two units, is a probe of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this review we consider the basic mechanism of neutrinoless double-beta decay induced by light Majorana neutrino masses. After a brief summary of the present status of our knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing and an introduction to the seesaw mechanism for the generation of light Majorana neutrino masses, in this review we discuss the theory and phenomenology of neutrinoless double-beta decay. We present the basic elements of the theory of neutrinoless double-beta decay, our view of the present status of the challenging problem of the calculation of the nuclear matrix element of the process and a summary of the experimental results.

Predictions for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay in the 3+1 Sterile Neutrino Scenario

We present accurate predictions of the effective Majorana mass $|m_{ββ}|$ in neutrinoless double-$β$ decay in the standard case of $3ν$ mixing and in the case of 3+1 neutrino mixing indicated by the reactor, Gallium and LSND anomalies. We have taken into account the uncertainties of the neutrino mixing parameters determined by oscillation experiments. It is shown that the predictions for $|m_{ββ}|$ in the cases of $3ν$ and 3+1 mixing are quite different, in agreement with previous discussions in the literature, and that future measurements of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and of the effective light neutrino mass in $β$ decay or the total mass of the three lightest neutrinos in cosmological experiments may distinguish the $3ν$ and 3+1 cases if the mass ordering is determined by oscillation experiments. We also present a relatively simple method to determine the minimum value of $|m_{ββ}|$ in the general case of $N$-neutrino mixing.

Predictions for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay in the 3+1 Sterile Neutrino Scenario

In this proceeding we present predictions of the effective Majorana mass $|m_{ββ}|$ in neutrinoless double-$β$ decay for the standard $3ν$ mixing case and for the 3+1 neutrino mixing case indicated by the short-baseline anomalies. We have taken into account the uncertainties of the neutrino mixing parameters determined by oscillation experiments. We obtained that the predictions for $|m_{ββ}|$ in the cases of $3ν$ and 3+1 mixing are quite different, in agreement with previous discussions in the literature, and that future measurements of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay and the total mass of the three lightest neutrinos in cosmological experiments may distinguish the $3ν$ and 3+1 cases if the mass ordering is determined by oscillation experiments.

Which is the Quantum Decay Law of Relativistic Particles?

We discuss the relation between the quantum-mechanical survival probability of an unstable system in motion and that of the system at rest. The usual definition of the survival probability which takes into account only the time evolution of an unstable system leads to a relation between the survival probability of the system in motion and that of the system at rest which is different from the standard relation based on relativistic time dilation. This approach led other authors to claim non-standard quantum-mechanical effects which are in clear contradiction with Special Relativity. We show that an appropriate relativistic definition of the survival probability which takes into account also the space evolution of an unstable system leads to the standard relation between the survival probability of the system in motion and that of the system at rest, in agreement with Special Relativity. We present a rigorous derivation of this result based on a wave packet treatment.

Cosmological Invisible Decay of Light Sterile Neutrinos

We introduce a cosmological invisible decay of the sterile neutrino with the eV-scale mass indicated by short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments in order to allow its full thermalization in the early Universe. We show that the fit of the cosmological data is practically as good as the fit obtained with a stable sterile neutrino without mass constraints, which has been recently considered by several authors for the explanation of the observed suppression of small-scale matter density fluctuations and for a solution of the tension between the Planck and BICEP2 measurements of the tensor to scalar ratio of large-scale fluctuations. Moreover, the extra relativistic degree of freedom corresponding to a fully thermalized sterile neutrino is correlated with a larger value of the Hubble constant, which is in agreement with local measurements.

preprint2014arXiv

Light Sterile Neutrinos in Cosmology and Short-Baseline Oscillation Experiments

We analyze the most recent cosmological data, including Planck, taking into account the possible existence of a sterile neutrino with a mass at the eV scale indicated by short-baseline neutrino oscillations data in the 3+1 framework. We show that the contribution of local measurements of the Hubble constant induces an increase of the value of the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom above the Standard Model value, giving an indication in favor of the existence of sterile neutrinos and their contribution to dark radiation. Furthermore, the measurements of the local galaxy cluster mass distribution favor the existence of sterile neutrinos with eV-scale masses, in agreement with short-baseline neutrino oscillations data. In this case there is no tension between cosmological and short-baseline neutrino oscillations data, but the contribution of the sterile neutrino to the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom is likely to be smaller than one. Considering the Dodelson-Widrow and thermal models for the statistical cosmological distribution of sterile neutrinos, we found that in the Dodelson-Widrow model there is a slightly better compatibility between cosmological and short-baseline neutrino oscillations data and the required suppression of the production of sterile neutrinos in the early Universe is slightly smaller.

CP-violating Phases in Active-Sterile Solar Neutrino Oscillations

Effects of CP-violating phases in active-sterile solar neutrino oscillations are discussed in a general scheme of 3+N_{s} mixing, without any constraint on the mixing between the three active and the N_{s} sterile neutrinos, assuming only a realistic hierarchy of neutrino mass-squared differences. A generalized Parke formula describing the neutrino oscillation probabilities inside the Sun is calculated. The validity of the analytical calculation and the probability variation due to the unknown CP-violating phases are illustrated with a numerical calculation of the evolution equation in the case of 3+1 neutrino mixing.

Day-Night Asymmetries in Active-Sterile Solar Neutrino Oscillations

Day-night asymmetries in active-sterile solar neutrino oscillations are discussed in the general $3+N_{s}$ mixing framework with three active and N_s sterile neutrinos. Analytical expressions of the probability of neutrino flavor transitions in the Earth in the perturbative approximation and in the slab approximation are presented and the effects of active-sterile mixing and of the CP-violating phases are discussed. The accuracy of the analytical approximations and the properties of the day-night asymmetries are illustrated numerically in the 3+1 neutrino mixing framework.

Pragmatic View of Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations

We present the results of global analyses of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in 3+1, 3+2 and 3+1+1 neutrino mixing schemes. We show that the data do not allow us to abandon the simplest 3+1 scheme in favor of the more complex 3+2 and 3+1+1 schemes. We present the allowed region in the 3+1 parameter space, which is located at $Δ{m}^2_{41}$ between 0.82 and 2.19 $\text{eV}^2$ at $3σ$. The case of no oscillations is disfavored by about $6σ$, which decreases dramatically to about $2σ$ if the LSND data are not considered. Hence, new high-precision experiments are needed to check the LSND signal.

Short-Baseline Electron Neutrino Oscillation Length After Troitsk

We discuss the implications for short-baseline electron neutrino disappearance in the 3+1 mixing scheme of the recent Troitsk bounds on the mixing of a neutrino with mass between 2 and 100 eV. Considering the Troitsk data in combination with the results of short-baseline nu_e and antinu_e disappearance experiments, which include the reactor and Gallium anomalies, we derive a 2 sigma allowed range for the effective neutrino squared-mass difference between 0.85 and 43 eV^2. The upper bound implies that it is likely that oscillations in distance and/or energy can be observed in radioactive source experiments. It is also favorable for the ICARUS@CERN experiment, in which it is likely that oscillations are not washed-out in the near detector. We discuss also the implications for neutrinoless double-beta decay.

The EUROnu Project

The EUROnu project has studied three possible options for future, high intensity neutrino oscillation facilities in Europe. The first is a Super Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of pions created by bombarding targets with a 4 MW proton beam from the CERN High Power Superconducting Proton Linac. The far detector for this facility is the 500 kt MEMPHYS water Cherenkov, located in the Fréjus tunnel. The second facility is the Neutrino Factory, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of μ+ and μ- beams in a storage ring. The far detector in this case is a 100 kt Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector at a baseline of 2000 km. The third option is a Beta Beam, in which the neutrinos come from the decay of beta emitting isotopes, in particular 6He and 18Ne, also stored in a ring. The far detector is also the MEMPHYS detector in the Fréjus tunnel. EUROnu has undertaken conceptual designs of these facilities and studied the performance of the detectors. Based on this, it has determined the physics reach of each facility, in particular for the measurement of CP violation in the lepton sector, and estimated the cost of construction. These have demonstrated that the best facility to build is the Neutrino Factory. However, if a powerful proton driver is constructed for another purpose or if the MEMPHYS detector is built for astroparticle physics, the Super Beam also becomes very attractive.

We discuss the implications of a recent 71Ga(3He,3H)71Ge measurement which give information on the neutrino cross section in Gallium experiments. We discuss the solar bound on active-sterile mixing and present our numerical results. Electromagnetic Properties of Neutrinos

In this review we discuss the main theoretical aspects and experimental effects of neutrino electromagnetic properties. Then, we discuss the theory and phenomenology of the magnetic and electric dipole moments, summarizing the experimental results and the theoretical predictions. We discuss also the phenomenology of a neutrino charge radius and radiative decay. Finally, we describe the theory of neutrino spin and spin-flavor precession in a transverse magnetic field and we summarize its phenomenological applications.

Bayesian Constraints on theta_{13} from Solar and KamLAND Neutrino Data

We present the results of a Bayesian analysis of solar and KamLAND neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino mixing. We adopt two approaches for the prior probability distribution of the oscillation parameters Delta m^2_{21}, sin^2 theta_{12}, sin^2 theta_{13}: 1) a traditional flat uninformative prior; 2) an informative prior which describes the limits on sin^2 theta_{13} obtained in atmospheric and long-baseline accelerator and reactor neutrino experiments. In both approaches, we present the allowed regions in the sin^2 theta_{13} - Delta m^2_{21} and sin^2 theta_{12} - sin^2 theta_{13} planes, as well as the marginal posterior probability distribution of sin^2 theta_{13}. We confirm the 1.2 sigma hint of theta_{13} > 0 found in hep-ph/0806.2649 from the analysis of solar and KamLAND neutrino data. We found that the statistical significance of the hint is reduced to about 0.8 sigma by the constraints on sin^2 theta_{13} coming from atmospheric and long-baseline accelerator and reactor neutrino data, in agreement with arXiv:0808.2016.

The ratio of $e^{\pm}p$ scattering cross sections predicted from the global fit of elastic $ep$ data

We present predictions for the value of the cross section ratio $σ(e^+p \to e^+p)/σ(e^-p \to e^-p)$, determined from our fit of the elastic $ep$ cross section and polarization data. In this fit we took into account the phenomenological two-photon exchange dispersive correction. The cross section ratios which are expected to be measured by the VEPP-3 experiment are computed. It is shown that for both experiments the predicted cross section ratios deviate from unity within more than $3σ$.

Neutrino Wave Packets in Quantum Field Theory

We present a model of neutrino oscillations in the framework of quantum field theory in which the propagating neutrino and the particles participating to the production and detection processes are described by wave packets. The neutrino state is a superposition of massive neutrino wave packets determined by the production process, as naturally expected from causality. We show that the energies and momenta of the massive neutrino components relevant for neutrino oscillations are in general different from the average energies and momenta of the propagating massive neutrino wave packets, because of the effects of the detection process. Our results confirm the correctness of the standard expression for the oscillation length of extremely relativistic neutrinos and the existence of a coherence length.

Bayesian View Of Solar Neutrino Oscillations

We present the results of a Bayesian analysis of solar neutrino data in terms of nu_e->nu_{mu,tau} and nu_e->nu_s oscillations, where nu_s is a sterile neutrino. We perform a Rates Analysis of the rates of solar neutrino experiments, including the first SNO CC result, and spectral data of the CHOOZ experiment, and a Global Analysis that takes into account also the Super-Kamiokande day and night electron energy spectra. We show that the Bayesian analysis does not suffer any problem from the inclusion of the numerous bins of the CHOOZ and Super-Kamiokande energy spectra and allows to reach the same conclusions on the favored type of neutrino transitions and on the determination of the most favored values of the oscillation parameters in both the Rates and Global Analysis. Our Bayesian analysis shows that nu_e->nu_s transitions are strongly disfavored with respect to nu_e->nu_{mu,tau} transitions. In the case of nu_e->nu_{mu,tau} oscillations, the LMA region is favored by the data (86% probability), the LOW region has some small chance (13% probability), the VO region is almost excluded (1% probability) and the SMA region is practically excluded (0.01% probability). We calculate also the marginal posterior probability distributions for tan^2 theta and Delta m^2 and we show that the data imply large mixing almost with certainty and large values of Delta m^2 are favored. We present also the results of a standard least-squares analysis and we show that the standard goodness of fit test is not able to rejects pure nu_e->nu_s transitions. The likelihood ratio test allows to reject pure nu_e->nu_s transitions in favor of nu_e->nu_{mu,tau} transitions only in the Global Analysis.

Energy and Momentum of Oscillating Neutrinos

It is shown that Lorentz invariance implies that in general flavor neutrinos in oscillation experiments are superpositions of massive neutrinos with different energies and different momenta. It is also shown that for each process in which neutrinos are produced there is either a Lorentz frame in which all massive neutrinos have the same energy or a Lorentz frame in which all massive neutrinos have the same momentum. In the case of neutrinos produced in two-body decay processes, there is a Lorentz frame in which all massive neutrinos have the same energy.

A frequentist analysis of solar neutrino data

We calculate with Monte Carlo the goodness of fit and the confidence level of the standard allowed regions for the neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from the fit of solar neutrino data. We show that the values of the goodness of fit and of the confidence level of the allowed regions are significantly smaller than the standard ones. Using Neyman's method, we also calculate exact allowed regions with correct frequentist coverage. We show that the standard allowed region around the global minimum of the least-squares function is a reasonable approximation of the exact one, whereas the size of the other regions is dramatically underestimated in the standard method.

Large nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau transitions in short-baseline experiments?

Considering four-neutrino schemes of type 3+1, we identify four small regions of the neutrino mixing parameter space compatible with all data. Assuming a small mixing between the sterile neutrino and the isolated mass eigenstate we show that large nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau transitions are predicted in short-baseline experiments and could be observed in the near future in dedicated experiments. We discuss also implications for solar, atmospheric and long-baseline neutrino experiments and we present a formalism that allows to describe in 3+1 schemes atmospheric neutrino oscillations, long-baseline nu_mu disappearance and nu_mu->nu_tau transitions in matter.

The Power of Confidence Intervals

We consider the power to reject false values of the parameter in Frequentist methods for the calculation of confidence intervals. We connect the power with the physical significance (reliability) of confidence intervals for a parameter bounded to be non-negative. We show that the confidence intervals (upper limits) obtained with a (biased) method that near the boundary has large power in testing the parameter against larger alternatives and small power in testing the parameter against smaller alternatives are physically more significant. Considering the recently proposed methods with correct coverage, we show that the physical significance of upper limits is smallest in the Unified Approach and highest in the Maximum Likelihood Estimator method. We illustrate our arguments in the specific cases of a bounded Gaussian distribution and a Poisson distribution with known background.

Four-neutrino MS^2 mixing

We present a simple scheme of mixing of four neutrinos that can accommodate the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments, the observed abundances of primordial elements and the current upper bound for the effective Majorana neutrino mass in neutrinoless double-beta decay (assuming that massive neutrinos are Majorana particles). The scheme has maximal mixing in the nu_mu,nu_tau-nu_3,nu_4 sector and small mixings in the nu_e,nu_s-nu_1,nu_2 and nu_e,nu_mu-nu_1,nu_3 (or nu_e,nu_mu-nu_1,nu_4) sectors (MS^2). We discuss the implications of this scheme for short and long baseline oscillation experiments and for neutrinoless double-beta decay and tritium beta-decay experiments.

Phenomenology of Neutrino Oscillations

This review is focused on neutrino mixing and neutrino oscillations in the light of the recent experimental developments. After discussing possible types of neutrino mixing for Dirac and Majorana neutrinos and considering in detail the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and matter, we review all existing evidence and indications in favour of neutrino oscillations that have been obtained in the atmospheric, solar and LSND experiments. We present the results of the analyses of the neutrino oscillation data in the framework of mixing of three and four massive neutrinos and investigate possibilities to test the different neutrino mass and mixing schemes obtained in this way. We also discuss briefly future neutrino oscillation experiments.

Coherence of neutrino oscillations in the wave packet approach

The temporal and spatial coherence widths of the microscopic process by which a neutrino is detected are incorporated in the quantum mechanical wave packet treatment of neutrino oscillations, confirming the observation of Kiers, Nussinov and Weiss that an accurate measurement of the energies of the particles participating in the detection process can increase the coherence length. However, the wave packet treatment presented here shows that the coherence length has an upper bound, determined by the neutrino energy and the mass-squared difference, beyond which the coherence of the oscillation process is lost.

Four-Neutrino Mixing and Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis

We investigate the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis constraints on neutrino mixing in the framework of the two four-neutrino schemes that are favored by the results of neutrino oscillation experiments. We discuss the implications of these constraints for terrestrial short and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and we present some possibilities of testing them in these experiments. In particular, we show that from the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis constraints it follows that the nu(mu)->nu(tau) transition is severely suppressed in short-baseline experiments, whereas its oscillation amplitude in long-baseline experiments is of order 1. We also propose a new parameterization of the four-neutrino mixing matrix U which is appropriate for the schemes under consideration.

Neutrino Masses and Mixings in the Light of Experimental Data

All the possible schemes of neutrino mixing with four massive neutrinos inspired by the existing experimental indications in favour of neutrino mixing are considered. It is shown that the scheme with a neutrino mass hierarchy is not compatible with the experimental results, likewise all other schemes with the masses of three neutrinos close together and the fourth mass separated by a gap needed to incorporate the LSND neutrino oscillations. Only two schemes with two pairs of neutrinos with close masses separated by this gap of the order of 1 eV are in agreement with the results of all experiments. We carefully examine the arguments leading to this conclusion and also discuss experimental consequences of the two favoured neutrino schemes.

Statistical interpretations of the null result of the KARMEN 2 experiment

Several possible statistical interpretations of the null result of the KARMEN 2 neutrino oscillation experiment are discussed with the aim of clarifying the implications of the fact that KARMEN 2 did not observe any of the expected background events. The formalism that allows to take into account the error of the expected mean background in a Poisson process with background is presented and applied to the statistical analysis of the KARMEN 2 null result. The possibility of ignoring the expected mean background calculated for the KARMEN 2 experiment is discussed and it is shown that the resulting exclusion curves are ultra-conservative, but may be a safe choice in such a controversial case. It is also shown that the sensitivity curves of neutrino oscillation experiments cannot be considered as exclusion curves. The implications of the different statistical analyses of the KARMEN 2 null result for the compatibility of the results of the KARMEN 2 and LSND experiments is discussed.

Constraints on long-baseline neutrino oscillation probabilities and CP asymmetries from neutrino oscillation data

We consider long-baseline neutrino oscillations in the framework of two schemes with mixing of four massive neutrinos which can accommodate all the existing indications in favour of neutrino mixing. Within these schemes, we derive bounds on the oscillation probabilities and the CP-odd neutrino-antineutrino asymmetries in long-baseline experiments. Using the results of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, we obtain rather strong upper bounds on the long-baseline probabilities 1-P(nu_e->nu_e) and P(nu_mu->nu_e). Nevertheless, the projected sensitivities of the MINOS and ICARUS experiments are better than our bounds. We also show that there are no corresponding constraints for nu_mu->nu_mu and nu_mu->nu_tau long-baseline oscillations and that the CP-odd asymmetry in the latter channel can reach the maximal value allowed by the unitarity of the mixing matrix. Some schemes with mixing of three neutrinos are also considered.

Long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and CP violation in the lepton sector

We discuss possibilities to investigate the effects of CP (and T) violation in the lepton sector in neutrino oscillation experiments. We consider the effects of CP violation in the framework of two schemes of mixing of four massive neutrinos that can accommodate the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. Using the constraints on the mixing parameters that follow from the results of short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, we derive rather strong upper bounds on the effects of CP violation in nu_mu<->nu_e transitions in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that the effects of CP violation in nu_mu<->nu_tau transitions in long-baseline oscillation experiments can be as large as is allowed by the unitarity of the mixing matrix. The matter effects, which complicate the problem of searching for CP violation in long-baseline experiments, are discussed in detail. We consider the T-odd asymmetries whose measurement could allow to reveal T and CP violation in the lepton sector independently from matter effects.

Neutrino oscillation constraints on neutrinoless double beta decay

We have studied the constraints imposed by the results of neutrino oscillation experiments on the effective Majorana mass |<m>| that characterizes the contribution of Majorana neutrino masses to the matrix element of neutrinoless double-beta decay. We have shown that in a general scheme with three Majorana neutrinos and a hierarchy of neutrino masses (which can be explained by the see-saw mechanism), the results of neutrino oscillation experiments imply rather strong constraints on the parameter |<m>|. From the results of the first reactor long-baseline experiment CHOOZ and the Bugey experiment it follows that |<m>| < 3x10^{-2} eV if the largest mass-squared difference is smaller than 2 eV^2. Hence, we conclude that the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay with a probability that corresponds to |<m>| > 10^{-1} eV would be a signal for a non-hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum and/or non-standard mechanisms of lepton number violation.

Gravitational Effects on the Neutrino Oscillation

The propagation of neutrinos in a gravitational field is studied. A method of calculating a covariant quantum-mechanical phase in a curved space-time is presented. The result is used to calculate gravitational effects on the neutrino oscillation in the presence of a gravitational field. We restrict our discussion to the case of the Schwartzschild metric. Specifically, the cases of the radial propagation and the non-radial propagation are considered. A possible application to gravitational lensing of neutrinos is also suggested.

Neutrino mass spectrum from the results of neutrino oscillation experiments

All the possible schemes of neutrino mixing with four massive neutrinos inspired by the existing experimental indications in favor of neutrino mixing are considered in a model independent way. Assuming that in short-baseline experiments only one mass-squared difference is relevant, it is shown that the scheme with a neutrino mass hierarchy is not compatible with the experimental results. Only two schemes with two pairs of neutrinos with close masses separated by a mass difference of the order of 1 eV are in agreement with the results of all experiments. One of these schemes leads to possibly observable effects in Tritium and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments.

A MODEL INDEPENDENT APPROACH TO FUTURE SOLAR NEUTRINO EXPERIMENTS

It is shown that from the data of future solar neutrino experiments (SNO and Super-Kamiokande), in which high-energy $^8\mathrm{B}$ neutrinos will be detected, it will be possible in a model independent way: 1) To reveal the presence of sterile neutrinos in the flux of solar neutrinos on the earth; 2) To obtain the initial flux of $^8\mathrm{B}$ $ν_e$'s; 3) To determine the probability of $ν_e$'s to survive as a function of neutrino energy.

Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations among Three Neutrino Flavors and Long-Baseline Experiments

Anticipating future long-baseline neutrino experiments to search for neutrino oscillations in various oscillation channels, we have analyzed the atmospheric neutrino data in the framework of a model with mixing of three massive neutrino fields that can accommodate the data of solar neutrino experiments. The oscillations of atmospheric and terrestrial neutrinos are described in this model by three parameters: $ Δm^2 $ and the squared moduli of two elements of the mixing matrix, $ | U_{e3} |^2 $ and $ | U_{\mu3} |^2 $, which determine the amplitudes of oscillations among all active neutrinos. The results of the analysis of the atmospheric neutrino data are presented in the form of allowed regions in the plane of the two parameters oscillation amplitude and $ Δm^2 $ for all oscillation channels to be investigated in the future long-baseline oscillation experiments.

Atmospheric Neutrino Problem in Maximally-Mixed Three Generations of Neutrinos

Motivated by the indication that both the atmospheric and the solar neutrino puzzles may simultaneously be solved by (vacuum as well as matter-induced resonant) oscillations of two generations of neutrinos with large mixing, we have analyzed the data on the atmospheric and solar neutrinos assuming that all {\it three} neutrinos are maximally mixed. It is shown that the values of $ Δm^2 $ obtained from the two-generation analyses are still valid even in the three-generation scheme, i.e. the two puzzles can be solved simultaneously if $ Δm_{31}^2 \simeq 10^{-2} \, \mathrm{eV}^2 $ for the atmospheric neutrinos and $ Δm_{21}^2 \simeq 10^{-10} \, \mathrm{eV}^2 $ for solar neutrinos in the maximally mixed three-generation scheme.

A Model Independent Approach to Future Solar Neutrino Experiments

We discuss here what model independent information about properties of neutrinos and of the sun can be obtained from future solar neutrino experiments (SNO, Super-Kamiokande). It is shown that in the general case of transitions of solar $ν_e$'s into $ν_μ$ and/or $ν_τ$ the initial $^8\mathrm{B}$ neutrino flux can be measured by the observation of NC events. From the CC measurements the $ν_e$ survival probability can be determined as a function of neutrino energy. The general case of transitions of solar $ν_e$'s into active as well as sterile neutrinos is considered. A number of relations between measurable quantities the test of which will allow to answer the question whether there are sterile neutrinos in the solar neutrino flux on the earth are derived. Transitions of solar $ν_e$'s into active and sterile states due to neutrino mixing and Dirac magnetic moments or into active left-handed neutrinos and active right-handed antineutrinos due to neutrino mixing and Majorana transition magnetic moments are also considered. It is shown that future solar neutrino experiments will allow to distinguish between the cases of Dirac and Majorana magnetic moments.
