Comparing XMCD and DFT with STM spin excitation spectroscopy for Fe and Co adatoms on Cu$_{2}$N/Cu(100)

We report on the magnetic properties of Fe and Co adatoms on a Cu$_{2}$N/Cu(100)-$c(2 \times 2)$ surface investigated by x-ray magnetic dichroism measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations including the local coulomb interaction. We compare these results with properties formerly deduced from STM spin excitation spectroscopy (SES) performed on the individual adatoms. In particular we focus on the values of the local magnetic moments determined by XMCD compared to the expectation values derived from the description of the SES data. The angular dependence of the projected magnetic moments along the magnetic field, as measured by XMCD, can be understood on the basis of the SES Hamiltonian. In agreement with DFT, the XMCD measurements show large orbital contributions to the total magnetic moment for both magnetic adatoms.

Consequences of Kondo exchange on quantum spins

When individual quantum spins are placed in close proximity to conducting substrates, the localized spin is coupled to the nearby itinerant conduction electrons via Kondo exchange. In the strong coupling limit this can result in the Kondo effect - the formation of a correlated, many body singlet state - and a resulting renormalization of the density of states near the Fermi energy. However, even when Kondo screening does not occur, Kondo exchange can give rise to a wide variety of other phenomena. In addition to the well known renormalization of the g factor and the finite spin decoherence and relaxation times, Kondo exchange has recently been found to give rise to a newly discovered effect: the renormalization of the single ion magnetic anisotropy. Here we put these apparently different phenomena on equal footing by treating the effect of Kondo exchange perturbatively. In this formalism, the central quantity is $ρJ$, the product of the density of states at the Fermi energy $ρ$ and the Kondo exchange constant J. We show that perturbation theory correctly describes the experimentally observed exchange induced shifts of the single spin excitation energies, demonstrating that Kondo exchange can be used to tune the effective magnetic anisotropy of a single spin.

Magnetic Anisotropy of Single Mn Acceptors in GaAs in an External Magnetic Field

We investigate the effect of an external magnetic field on the physical properties of the acceptor hole states associated with single Mn acceptors placed near the (110) surface of GaAs. Crosssectional scanning tunneling microscopy images of the acceptor local density of states (LDOS) show that the strongly anisotropic hole wavefunction is not significantly affected by a magnetic field up to 6 T. These experimental results are supported by theoretical calculations based on a tightbinding model of Mn acceptors in GaAs. For Mn acceptors on the (110) surface and the subsurfaces immediately underneath, we find that an applied magnetic field modifies significantly the magnetic anisotropy landscape. However the acceptor hole wavefunction is strongly localized around the Mn and the LDOS is quite independent of the direction of the Mn magnetic moment. On the other hand, for Mn acceptors placed on deeper layers below the surface, the acceptor hole wavefunction is more delocalized and the corresponding LDOS is much more sensitive on the direction of the Mn magnetic moment. However the magnetic anisotropy energy for these magnetic impurities is large (up to 15 meV), and a magnetic field of 10 T can hardly change the landscape and rotate the direction of the Mn magnetic moment away from its easy axis. We predict that substantially larger magnetic fields are required to observe a significant field-dependence of the tunneling current for impurities located several layers below the GaAs surface.

Light Scattering by Low Lying Quasiparticle Excitations in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

Low lying excitations of electron liquids in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime are studied by resonant inelastic light scattering methods. We present here results from charge and spin excitations of FQH states in the lowest spin-split Landau levels that are of current interest. In the range of filling factors $2/5 \geq ν\geq 1/3$, we find evidence that low energy quasiparticle excitations can be interpreted with spin-split composite fermion quasi-Landau levels. At FQH states around $ν=3/2$, we find well-defined excitations at 4/3 and 8/5 that are consistent with a spin-unpolarized population of quasi-Landau levels.
