A Naturally Light Dilaton and a Small Cosmological Constant

We present a non-supersymmetric theory with a naturally light dilaton. It is based on a 5D holographic description of a conformal theory perturbed by a close-to-marginal operator of dimension 4-epsilon, which develops a condensate. As long as the dimension of the perturbing operator remains very close to marginal (even for large couplings) a stable minimum at hierarchically small scales is achieved, where the dilaton mass squared is suppressed by epsilon. At the same time the cosmological constant in this sector is also suppressed by epsilon, and thus parametrically smaller than in a broken SUSY theory. As a byproduct we also present an exact solution to the scalar-gravity system that can be interpreted as a new holographic realization of spontaneously broken conformal symmetry. Even though this metric deviates substantially from AdS space in the deep IR it still describes a non-linearly realized exactly conformal theory. We also display the effective potential for the dilaton for arbitrary holographic backgrounds.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

SUSY without the Little Hierarchy

We propose a simple gauge extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), where the fine tuning in the Higgs mass parameters is highly reduced. The Higgs boson is insensitive to high energies because of supersymmetry and also because it is a pseudo-Goldstone boson of a global symmetry (referred to as double protection or super-little Higgs mechanism). A large shift in the Higgs quartic self coupling is obtained via a non-decoupling D-term coming from an extra gauge group, resulting in a Higgs that can be as heavy as 135 GeV with a tuning milder than 10%. With an appropriate choice of quantum numbers one can achieve that the additional quartic is generated without a corresponding shift in the Higgs mass, thus preserving the double protection of the Higgs. The model predicts the existence of several top-partner fermions one of which can be as light as 700 GeV, while the ordinary MSSM states could be as light as 400 GeV. In addition to many new particles in the multi-TeV range there would also be an axion-like state very weakly coupled to standard model (SM) matter which could be in the sub-GeV regime, and sterile neutrinos which could be light.

A Model of Lepton Masses from a Warped Extra Dimension

In order to explain the non-hierarchical neutrino mixing angles and the absence of lepton flavor violating processes in the context of warped extra dimensions one needs to introduce bulk flavor symmetries. We present a simple model of lepton masses and mixings in RS models based on the A4 non-abelian discrete symmetry. The virtues of this choice are: (i) the natural appearance of the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern; (ii) the complete absence of tree-level flavor violations in the neutral sector; (iii) the absence of flavor gauge bosons; (iv) the hierarchies in the charged lepton masses are explained via wave-function overlaps. We present the minimal field content and symmetry breaking pattern necessary to obtain a successful model of this type. The bounds from electroweak precision measurements allow the KK mass scale to be as low as 3 TeV. Tree-level lepton flavor violation is absent in this model, while the loop induced mu -> e gamma branching fraction is safely below the experimental bound.
