Measurement of the 12C(e,e'p)11B Two-Body Breakup Reaction at High Missing Momentum Values

The five-fold differential cross section for the 12C(e,e'p)11B reaction was determined over a missing momentum range of 200-400 MeV/c, in a kinematics regime with Bjorken x > 1 and Q2 = 2.0 (GeV/c)2. A comparison of the results and theoretical models and previous lower missing momentum data is shown. The theoretical calculations agree well with the data up to a missing momentum value of 325 MeV/c and then diverge for larger missing momenta. The extracted distorted momentum distribution is shown to be consistent with previous data and extends the range of available data up to 400 MeV/c.

Nucleon momentum distributions, their spin-isospin dependence and short-range correlations

The nucleon momentum distribution $n_A(k)$ for $A=$2, 3, 4, 16, and 40 nuclei is systematically analyzed in terms of wave functions resulting from advanced solutions of the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation, obtained within different many-body approaches. Particular attention is paid to the separation of the momentum distributions into the mean-field and short-range correlations (SRC) contributions. It is shown that at high values of the momentum $k$ the high-momentum components ($k\gtrsim 1.5-2$ fm$^{-1}$) of all nuclei considered are very similar, exhibiting the well-known scaling behavior with the mass number $A$, independently of the used many-body approach and the details of the bare $NN$ interaction. The number of $NN$ pairs in a given ($ST$) state, viz., ($ST$)=(10), (00), (01), and (11), and the contribution of these states to the nucleon momentum distributions are calculated. It is shown that, apart from the (00) state, which has very small effects, all other spin-isospin states contribute to the momentum distribution in a wide range of momenta. It is shown that that for all nuclei considered the momentum distributions in the states T=0 and T=1 exhibit at $k\gtrsim 1.5-2$ fm$^{-1}$ very similar behaviors, which represents strong evidence of the A-independent character of SRCs. The ratio $n_A(k)/n_D(k)$ is analyzed in detail stressing that in the SRC region it always increases with the momentum and the origin of such an increase is discussed and elucidated. The relationships between the one- and two-body momentum distributions, considered in a previous paper, are discussed and clarified, pointing out the relevant role played by the center-of-mass motion of a correlated pair in the (10) state. The relationship of the present approach with the many-body methods based upon low-momentum effective interactions is briefly discussed.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Number of Collisions in the Glauber Model and Beyond

The so called number of hadron-nucleus collisions n_coll(b) at impact parameter b, and its integral value N_coll, which are used to normalize the measured fractional cross section of a hard process, are calculated within the Glauber-Gribov theory including the effects of nucleon short-range correlations. The Gribov inelastic shadowing corrections are summed to all orders by employing the dipole representation. Numerical calculations are performed at the energies of the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We found that whereas the Gribov corrections generally increase the value of N_coll, the inclusion of nucleon correlations, acting in the opposite directions, decreases it by a comparable amount. The interplay of the two effects varies with the value of the impact parameter.

Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering off Few-Nucleon Systems: Tagging the EMC Effect and Hadronization Mechanisms with Detection of Slow Recoiling Nuclei

The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off the deuteron ($^2H \equiv D$) and $^3He$ with detection of slow protons and deuterons, respectively, i.e. the processes $D(e,e'p)X$ and $^3He(e,e'D)X$, are calculated within the spectator mechanism, taking into account the final state interaction of the hadronizing quark with the detected protons and deuterons, respectively. It is shown that by a proper choice of the kinematics the origin of the EMC effect and the details of the interaction between the hadronizing quark and the nuclear medium can be investigated at a level which cannot be reached by inclusive deep inelastic scattering. A comparison of our calculations with recently available experimental data on the process $D(e,e'p)X$ shows a good agreement in the backward hemisphere of the emitted nucleons. Theoretical predictions at the energies thyat will be available at the upgraded Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facilty are presented, and the possibility to investigate the proposed semi-inclusive processes at electron-ion colliders is briefly discussed.

Universality of nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations: two-nucleon momentum distributions in few-body systems

Using realistic wave functions, the proton-neutron and proton-proton momentum distributions in $^3He$ and $^4He$ are calculated as a function of the relative, $k_{rel}$, and center of mass, $K_{CM}$, momenta, and the angle between them. For large values of ${k}_{rel}\gtrsim 2\,\,fm^{-1}$ and small values of ${K}_{CM} \lesssim 1.0\,\,fm^{-1}$, both distributions are angle independent and decrease with increasing $K_{CM}$, with the $pn$ distribution factorizing into the deuteron momentum distribution times a rapidly decreasing function of $K_{CM}$, in agreement with the two-nucleon (2N) short range correlation (SRC) picture. When $K_{CM}$ and $k_{rel}$ are both large, the distributions exhibit a strong angle dependence, which is evidence of three-nucleon (3N) SRC. The predicted center-of-mass and angular dependence of 2N and 3N SRC should be observable in two-nucleon knock-out processes $A(e,e'pN)X$.

Short range correlations and wave function factorization in light and finite nuclei

Recent BNL and Jlab data provided new evidence on two nucleon correlations (2NC) in nuclei. The data confirm the validity of the convolution model, describing the spectral function (SF) of a correlated pair moving in the mean field with high and low relative and center-of-mass (cm) momenta, respectively. The model is built assuming that the wave function (WF) of a nucleus A, describing a configuration where the cm momentum of a correlated pair is low and its relative momentum is high, factorizes into the product of the two-body WF and that of the A-2 system. Such a factorization has been shown to occur in nuclear matter (NM). Here it is shown that few-body systems exhibit factorization, which seems to be therefore a general property, to be reproduced also in studies of the WF of finite nuclei.

Solving the Bethe-Salpeter Equation in Euclidean Space

Different approaches to solve the spinor-spinor Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation in Euclidean space are considered. It is argued that the complete set of Dirac matrices is the most appropriate basis to define the partial amplitudes and to solve numerically the resulting system of equations with realistic interaction kernels. Other representations can be obtained by performing proper unitary transformations. A generalization of the iteration method for finding the energy spectrum of the BS equation is discussed and examples of concrete calculations are presented. Comparison of relativistic calculations with available experimental data and with corresponding non relativistic results together with an analysis of the role of Lorentz boost effects and relativistic corrections are presented. A novel method related to the use of hyperspherical harmonics is considered for a representation of the vertex functions suitable for numerical calculations.

Diffraction on Nuclei: Effects of Nucleon Correlations

The cross sections for a variety of diffractive processes in proton-nucleus scattering, associated with large gaps in rapidity, are calculated within an improved Glauber-Gribov theory, where the inelastic shadowing corrections are summed to all orders by employing the dipole representation. The effects of nucleon correlations, leading to a modification of the nuclear thickness function, are also taken into account. Numerical calculations are performed for the energies of the HERA-B experiment, and the RHIC and LHC colliders, and for several nuclei. It is found that whereas the Gribov corrections generally make nuclear matter more transparent, nucleon correlations act in the opposite direction and have important effects in various diffractive processes.

Calculations of the Exclusive Processes 2H(e,e'p)n, 3He(e,e'p)2H and 3He(e,e'p)(pn) within a Generalized Glauber Approach

The exclusive processes 2H(e,e'p)n, 3He(e,e'p)2H and 3He(e,e'p)(pn), have been analyzed using realistic few-body wave functions and treating the final state interaction (FSI) within a Generalized Eikonal Approximation (GEA), based upon the direct calculation of the Feynman diagrams describing the rescattering of the struck nucleon with the nucleons of the A-1 system. The approach represents an improvement of the conventional Glauber approach (GA), in that it allows one to take into account the effects of the nuclear excitation of the $A-1$ system on the rescattering of the struck nucleon. Using realistic three-body wave functions corresponding to the AV18 interaction, the results of our parameter free calculations are compared with available experimental data. It is found that in some kinematical conditions FSI effects represent small corrections, whereas in other kinematics conditions they are very large and absolutely necessary to provide a satisfactory agreement between theoretical calculations and experimental data. It is shown that in the kinematics of the experimental data which have been considered, covering the region of missing momentum and energy with p_m < 0.6 GeV/c and E_m < 100 MeV in the perpendicular kinematics, the GA and GEA predictions differ only by less than 3-4 %.

Hadronization and final state interaction effects in semi-exclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering off nuclei

Recent calculations of the effects of hadronization and final state interaction (FSI) in semi-exclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) $A(e,e'(A-1))X$ processes are reviewed. The basic ingredient underlying these calculations, {\it viz} the time-dependent effective debris-nucleon cross section is illustrated, and some relevant results on complex nuclei and the deuteron are presented. In the latter case, particular attention is paid to the choice of the kinematics, for such a choice would in principle allow one to investigate both the structure function of a bound nucleon as well as the hadronization mechanisms. It is stressed that a planned experiment at Jlab on the process $D(e,e'p)X$ could be very useful in that respect.

Rescattering and finite formation time effects in electro-disintegration of the deuteron in the cumulative region

The role of rescattering due to the final state interaction (FSI) and the influence of the finite formation time (FFT) on the inclusive $D(e,e')X$ and exclusive $D(e,e'p)n$ electro-disintegration of the deuteron are studied in the cumulative kinematical region $x>1$ and moderate values of the 4-momentum transfer $Q^2=2÷10$ (GeV/c)$^2$. The spins are averaged out. It is found that in the inclusive process the relative magnitude of rescattering steadily grows with $x$ and that at $x=1.7$ it has the same order as the plane wave impulse approximation (PWIA) contribution, with the finite formation time effects decreasing the rescattering contribution by $\sim 30$%. In the exclusive process, with increasing momentum transfer, FFT substantially reduces the effects from FSI, although the latter are still appreciable in the region of momentum transfer investigated.

Final state interaction in semi-inclusive DIS off nuclei

The final state interaction in DIS of leptons off a nucleus A, due to the propagation of the struck nucleon debris and its hadronization in the nuclear environment is considered. The effective cross section of such a partonic system with the nucleons of the medium and its time dependence are estimated on the basis of a model which takes into account the production of hadrons due to the breaking of the color string and to gluon radiation. It is shown that the details of the propagation of the partonic system in the nuclear environment can be thoroughly investigated by the semi-inclusive process A(e,e'(A-1))X, in which the scattered lepton is detected in coincidence with the nucleus (A-1) in low energy and momentum states. The rescattering of the struck nucleon debris with the medium damps and distorts the momentum distributions of (A-1) in a way which is very sensitive to the details of effective cross section of the debris. The total cross section of the process on ^4He, ^16O, and ^40Ca, related to the probability that after a target nucleon experiences a DIS process, the recoiling (A-1) nucleus remains intact, is evaluated, and the distorted momentum distribution of the recoiling (A-1) system is obtained. It is shown that both quantities are very sensitive to the details of the early stage of hadronization of the nucleon debris in the nuclear medium.

Ground-state correlations and final state interactions in exclusive lepton scattering off few-nucleon systems

The two nucleon emission process off ^3He induced by medium energy electrons has been theoretically analyzed using realistic three-nucleon wave functions and taking the final state interaction into account. Various kinematical conditions have been considered in order to clarify the question whether the effects of the final state interaction could be minimized by a proper choice of the kinematics.

Final state interaction in inclusive and exclusive quasi-elastic processes

We discuss a new approach to final state interactions, that keeps explicitly into account the virtuality of the ejected nucleon in quasi-elastic $A(e,e'p)X$ scattering at very large $Q^2$, and we present some recent results, at moderately large $Q^2$ values, for the nuclear transparency in $^4He$, $^{16}O$ and $^{40}Ca$ and for the momentum distributions of $^4He$.

The Neutron Spin Structure Function from the Deuteron Data in the Resonance Region

Nuclear effects in the spin-dependent structure function $g_1$ of the deuteron are studied in the kinematics of future experiments at CEBAF, ($ν\leq 3~GeV, ~Q^2 \leq 2~GeV^2$). The magnitude of nuclear effects is found to be significantly larger than the one occurring in deep inelastic scattering ($ν\to \infty, ~Q^2\to \infty$). A possibility to measure the neutron structure functions in the CEBAF experiments with deuterium is analysed. It is found that disregarding or improperly treating nuclear effects in the region of nucleon resonances would lead to the ``extraction" of an unreliable function. A procedure aimed at correctly extracting the neutron structure function from the deuterium data is illustrated and conclusions about the experimental study of the $Q^2$ dependence of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn Sum Rule for the neutron are drawn.
