Consequences of vector-like quarks of Nelson-Barr type

The Nelson-Barr mechanism to solve the strong CP problem requires vector-like quarks (VLQs) to transmit the spontaneous CP breaking to the SM. We study the scenario where only these VLQs are within reach at the TeV scale while the spontaneous CP breaking sector is inaccessible. We investigate how these VLQs of Nelson-Barr type differ from generic VLQs and find from parameter counting that one less parameter is needed. In particular, for one VLQ of Nelson-Barr type, there is only one CP odd quantity that is responsible for all CP violation. In this case, we solve the technical problem of parametrizing only the new physics parameters while keeping the SM parameters as independent inputs. For one down-type VLQ, the model is largely flavor safe because the VLQ couplings to the SM up quarks and the $W$ are hierarchically smaller for lighter quarks.

Leptogenesis in the $μτ$ basis

We formulate three-flavor type-I leptogenesis in the $μτ$ basis which is convenient because in the three-flavor regime, both $μ$ and $τ$ charged lepton Yukawa interactions are in thermal equilibrium and the thermal bath is symmetric under the exchange $μ\leftrightarrow τ$. We apply this formalism to models with $μτ$-reflection $\mathsf{CP}^{μτ}$ symmetry. We confirm the previous result that leptogenesis fails in the three-flavor regime with exact $\mathsf{CP}^{μτ}$ symmetry. Allowing $\mathsf{CP}^{μτ}$ symmetry to be broken to various degrees, we show that leptogenesis can be successful in the three-flavor regime only in certain tuned parameter space, which could further imply additional symmetry is at play. As a bonus, we derive analytical expressions which could be utilized whenever the branching ratios for the decays to $μ$ and $τ$ flavors are equal or approximately so.

A new and trivial CP symmetry for extended $A_4$ flavor

The combination of $ν_μ$-$ν_τ$ exchange together with CP conjugation in the neutrino sector (known as $\mathrm{CP}^{μτ}$ symmetry or $μτ$-reflection) is known to predict the viable pattern: $θ_{23}=45^\circ$, maximal Dirac CP phase and trivial Majorana phases. We implement such a CP symmetry as a new CP symmetry in theories with $A_4$ flavor. The implementation in a complete renormalizable model leads to a new form for the neutrino mass matrix that leads to further predictions: normal hierarchical spectrum with lightest mass and $m_{ββ}$ ($0νββ$) of only few meV, and either $ν_1$ or $ν_2$ has opposite CP parity. An approximate $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetry arises naturally and controls the flavor structure of the model. The light neutrino masses are generated by the extended seesaw mechanism with 6 right-handed neutrinos (RHNs). The requirement of negligible one-loop corrections to light neutrino masses, validity of the extended seesaw approximation and not too long-lived BSM states to comply with BBN essentially restricts the parameters of the model to a small region: three relatively light right-handed neutrinos at the GeV scale, heavier neutrinos at the electroweak scale and Yukawa couplings smaller than the electron Yukawa. Such a small Yukawa couplings render these RHNs unobservable in terrestrial experiments.

Axion Like Particles and the Inverse Seesaw Mechanism

Light pseudoscalars known as axion like particles (ALPs) may be behind physical phenomena like the Universe transparency to ultra-energetic photons, the soft $γ$-ray excess from the Coma cluster, and the 3.5 keV line. We explore the connection of these particles with the inverse seesaw (ISS) mechanism for neutrino mass generation. We propose a very restrictive setting where the scalar field hosting the ALP is also responsible for generating the ISS mass scales through its vacuum expectation value on gravity induced nonrenormalizable operators. A discrete gauge symmetry protects the theory from the appearance of overly strong gravitational effects and discrete anomaly cancellation imposes strong constraints on the order of the group. The anomalous U$(1)$ symmetry leading to the ALP is an extended lepton number and the protective discrete symmetry can be always chosen as a subgroup of a combination of the lepton number and the baryon number.

Compatible abelian symmetries in N-Higgs-Doublet Models

We analyze the compatibility between abelian symmetries acting in two different sectors of a theory using the Smith Normal Form method. We focus on N-Higgs-doublet models (NHDMs) and on the compatibility between symmetries in the Higgs potential and in the Yukawa interactions, which were separately analyzed previous works. It is shown that two equal (isomorphic) symmetry groups that act in two separate sectors are not necessarily compatible in the whole theory and an upper bound is found for the size of the group that can be implemented in the entire NHDM. We also develop useful techniques to analyze compatibility and extend a symmetry from one sector to another. Consequences to the supersymmetric case are briefly discussed.

Implications of $μ-τ$ Flavored CP Symmetry of Leptons

We discuss gauge models incorporating $μ-τ$ flavored CP symmetry (called CP$^{μτ}$ in the text) in combination with $L_μ-L_τ$ invariance to understand neutrino mixings and discuss their phenomenological implications. We show that viable leptogenesis in this setting requires that the lightest right-handed neutrino mass must be between $10^9-10^{12}$ GeV and for effective two hierarchical right-handed neutrinos, leptogenesis takes place only in a narrower range of $5\times 10^{10}-10^{12}$ GeV. A multi-Higgs realization of this idea implies that there must be a pseudoscalar Higgs boson with mass less than 300 GeV. Generically, the vev alignment problem can be naturally avoided in our setting.

Symmetry breaking patterns in 3HDM

An attractive feature of New Physics models with multiple Higgs fields is that they are equipped with discrete symmetry groups in the Higgs and flavour sectors. These symmetry groups are often broken at the global minimum of the Higgs potential, either completely or to a proper subgroup, with certain phenomenological consequences. Here, we systematically explore these symmetry breaking patterns in the scalar sector of the three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM). We use the full list of discrete symmetry groups allowed in 3HDM, and for each group we find all possible ways it can break by the Higgs vacuum expectation value alignment. We also discuss the interplay between these symmetry groups and various forms of CP-violation in the scalar sector of 3HDM. Not only do our results solve the problem for 3HDM, but they also hint at several general features in multi-scalar sectors.

Constraining multi-Higgs flavour models

To study a flavour model with a non-minimal Higgs sector one must first define the symmetries of the fields; then identify what types of vacua exist and how they may break the symmetries; and finally determine whether the remnant symmetries are compatible with the experimental data. Here we address all these issues in the context of flavour models with any number of Higgs doublets. We stress the importance of analysing the Higgs vacuum expectation values that are pseudo-invariant under the generators of all subgroups. It is shown that the only way of obtaining a physical CKM mixing matrix and, simultaneously, non-degenerate and non-zero quark masses is requiring the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields to break completely the full flavour group, except possibly for some symmetry belonging to baryon number. The application of this technique to some illustrative examples, such as the flavour groups Delta(27), A4 and S3, is also presented.

The Quest for an Intermediate-Scale Accidental Axion and Further ALPs

The recent detection of the cosmic microwave background polarimeter experiment BICEP2 of tensor fluctuations in the B-mode power spectrum basically excludes all plausible axion models where its decay constant is above $10^{13}$ GeV. Moreover, there are strong theoretical, astrophysical, and cosmological motivations for models involving, in addition to the axion, also axion-like particles (ALPs), with decay constants in the intermediate scale range, between $10^9$ GeV and $10^{13}$ GeV. Here, we present a general analysis of models with an axion and further ALPs and derive bounds on the relative size of the axion and ALP photon (and electron) coupling. We discuss what we can learn from measurements of the axion and ALP photon couplings about the fundamental parameters of the underlying ultraviolet completion of the theory. For the latter we consider extensions of the Standard Model in which the axion and the ALP(s) appear as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons from the breaking of global chiral $U(1)$ (Peccei-Quinn (PQ)) symmetries, occuring accidentally as low energy remnants from exact discrete symmetries. In such models, the axion and the further ALP are protected from disastrous explicit symmetry breaking effects due to Planck-scale suppressed operators. The scenarios considered exploit heavy right handed neutrinos getting their mass via PQ symmetry breaking and thus explain the small mass of the active neutrinos via a seesaw relation between the electroweak and an intermediate PQ symmetry breaking scale. We show some models that can accommodate simultaneously an axion dark matter candidate, an ALP explaining the anomalous transparency of the universe for $γ$-rays, and an ALP explaining the recently reported 3.55 keV gamma line from galaxies and clusters of galaxies, if the respective decay constants are of intermediate scale.

Abelian symmetries of the N-Higgs-doublet model with Yukawa interactions

We investigate finite abelian groups which can represent symmetries of the N-Higgs-doublet models with quarks. We build a general formalism based on the powerful method of the Smith normal form and obtain an analytic upper bound on the order of abelian symmetry groups for any N. We investigate in detail the case N=2 and rederive known results in a more compact and intuitive fashion. We also study the NHDM with the maximal finite abelian symmetry for all small N cases up to N=5, and show that in each case all Yukawa textures compatible with such symmetry originate from a unique basic structure. This work opens the way to a systematic exploration of phenomenology of the NHDM with a desired symmetry, and illustrates the power of the Smith normal form technique.

An $S_3$ Model for Lepton Mass Matrices with Nearly Minimal Texture

We propose a simple extension of the electroweak standard model based on the discrete $S_3$ symmetry that is capable of realizing a nearly minimal Fritzsch-type texture for the Dirac mass matrices of both charged leptons and neutrinos. This is achieved with the aid of additional $Z_5$ and $Z_3$ symmetries, one of which can be embedded in $U(1)_{B-L}$. Five complex scalar singlet fields are introduced in addition to the SM with right-handed neutrinos. Although more general, the modified texture of the model retains the successful features of the minimal texture without fine-tuning; namely, it accommodates the masses and mixing of the leptonic sector and relates the emergence of large leptonic mixing angles with the seesaw mechanism. For large deviations of the minimal texture, both quasidegenerate spectrum or inverted hierarchy are allowed for neutrino masses.

Custodial SO(4) symmetry and CP violation in N-Higgs-doublet potentials

We study the implementation of global $SO(4)\sim SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetry in general potentials with N-Higgs-doublets in order to obtain models with custodial $SO(3)_C$ symmetry. We conclude that any implementation of the custodial SO(4) symmetry is equivalent, by a basis transformation, to a canonical one if $SU(2)_L$ is the gauge factor, $U(1)_Y$ is embedded in $SU(2)_R$ and we require $N$ copies of the doublet representation of $SU(2)_R$. The invariance by SO(4) automatically leads to a CP invariant potential and the basis of the canonical implementation of SO(4) is aligned to a basis where CP-symmetry acts in the standard fashion. We show different but equivalent implementations for the 2HDM, including an implementation not previously considered.

Intrinsic flavor violation in neutrinos produced through decays

We show there is a non-null probability to produce neutrinos of the ``wrong'' type in general decays, within the SM augmented by the known three massive neutrinos and nontrivial mixing. Such effect is equivalent to an intrinsic flavor violation (lepton flavor violation) at creation without requiring neutrino propagation. The exact amount of flavor violation depends on the neutrino flavor state to be detected. For realistic conditions, the violation is tiny but much larger than other indirect lepton flavor violation processes not involving neutrinos as final states. For neutrinos produced in a continuous spectrum, we show the effect is larger, in relative terms, for neutrinos produced in the low-energy portion of the spectrum. For muon decay, if the usual neutrino flavor state is assumed a flavor violation as large as 1\% is possible in the channel $μ^+\to\bnu_τe^+ ν_e$. We also discuss the relation between flavor violation and flavor indefiniteness for neutrino flavor states.

CP violation conditions in N-Higgs-doublet potentials

Conditions for CP violation in the scalar potential sector of general N-Higgs-doublet models (NHDMs) are analyzed from a group theoretical perspective. For the simplest two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) potential, a minimum set of conditions for explicit and spontaneous CP violation is presented. The conditions can be given a clear geometrical interpretation in terms of quantities in the adjoint representation of the basis transformation group for the two doublets. Such conditions depend on CP-odd pseudoscalar invariants. When the potential is CP invariant, the explicit procedure to reach the real CP-basis and the explicit CP transformation can also be obtained. The procedure to find the real basis and the conditions for CP violation are then extended to general NHDM potentials. The analysis becomes more involved and only a formal procedure to reach the real basis is found. Necessary conditions for CP invariance can still be formulated in terms of group invariants: the CP-odd generalized pseudoscalars. The problem can be completely solved for three Higgs-doublets.

Soft CP violation in K-meson systems

We consider a model with soft CP violation which accommodate the CP violation in the neutral kaons even if we assume that the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix is real and the sources of CP violation are three complex vacuum expectation values and a trilinear coupling in the scalar potential. We show that for some reasonable values of the masses and other parameters the model allows to explain all the observed CP violation processes in the $K^0$-$\bar{K}^0$ system.
