Probing the initial longitudinal density profile and electromagnetic field in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with heavy quarks

Heavy quarks are valuable probes of the electromagnetic field and the initial condition of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions. Within an improved Langevin model that is coupled to a (3+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model, we explore the origin of the directed flow coefficient ($v_1$) of heavy mesons and their decay leptons, and its splitting ($Δv_{1}$) between opposite charges. We find that while the rapidity dependence of the heavy flavor $v_1$ is mainly driven by the titled energy density profile of the QGP with respect to the longitudinal direction at the RHIC energy, it is dominated by the electromagnetic field at the LHC energy. The $Δv_{1}$ serves as a novel probe of the spacetime evolution profile of the electromagnetic field. Our results of $D$ mesons and their decay electrons are consistent with the available data at RHIC and LHC, and our predictions on the heavy flavor decay muons can be further tested by future measurements.

Perturbation solutions of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for longitudinally expanding fireballs

The solutions of relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for longitudinal expanding fireballs is investigated with the Navier-Stokes theory and Israel-Stewart theory. The energy and Euler conservation equations for the viscous fluid are derived in Rindler coordinates with the longitudinal expansion effect is small. Under the perturbation assumption, an analytical perturbation solution for the Navier-Stokes approximation and numerical solutions for the Israel-Stewart approximation are presented. The temperature evolution with both shear viscous effect and longitudinal acceleration effect in the longitudinal expanding framework are presented and specifically temperature profile shows symmetry Gaussian shape in the Rindler coordinates. In addition, in the presence of the longitudinal acceleration expanding effect, the results of the Israel-Stewart approximation are compared to the results from Bjorken and Navier-Stokes approximation, and it gives a good description than the Navier-Stokes theories results at the early stages of evolution.

Hadron formation from interaction among quarks

This paper deals with the hadronization process of quark system. A phenomenological potential is introduced to describe the interaction between a quark pair. The potential depends on the color charge of those quarks and their relative distances. Those quarks move according to classical equations of motion. Due to the color interaction, coloring quarks are separated to form color neutral clusters which are supposed to be the hadrons.

Scaling behavior of charged hadron $p_{T}$ distributions in $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ collisions

We report on a scaling behaviour in the transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) distributions for charged hadrons produced in proton-proton ($pp$) collisions with different center of mass energies ($\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV) at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. This scaling behaviour appears when the $p_{T}$ is replaced by $p_{T}/K$, where $K$ is a parameter and depends on $\sqrt{s}$. A similar scaling behaviour is observed in the $p_{T}$ distributions of charged hadrons produced in proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collisions with $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.63, 1.8 and 1.96 TeV at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The particle production mechanism behind the scaling behaviour in the $pp$ or $p\bar{p}$ collisions could be explained by the model of percolation of strings.

Exact solution of rectangular Ising lattice in a uniform external field

A method is proposed for exactly calculating the partition function of a rectangular Ising lattice with the presence of a uniform external field. This approach is based on the method of the transfer matrix developed about seventy years ago for the rectangular Ising model in the absence of external field. The basis for the vector space is chosen as the eigenvectors of the diagonal part of the transfer matrix. The matrix elements for the non-diagonal part can be calculated very easily. Then the partition function and thermodynamical quantities can be evaluated. The limit of infinite lattice is discussed.

On the Energy and Centrality Dependence of Higher Order Moments of Net-Proton Distributions in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The higher order moments of the net-baryon distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions are useful probes for the QCD critical point and fluctuations. Within a simple model we study the colliding energy and centrality dependence of the net-proton distributions in the central rapidity region. The model is based on considering the baryon stopping and pair production effects in the processes. Based on some physical reasoning, the dependence is parameterized. Predictions for the net-proton distributions for Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at different centralities at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=39 and 2760 GeV, respectively, are presented from the parameterizations for the model parameters. A possible test of our model is proposed from investigating the net proton distributions in the non-central rapidity region for different colliding centralities and energies.

Baryon production and net-proton distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The higher order moments of the net-baryon distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions are useful probes for the QCD critical point and fluctuations. We study the net-proton distributions and their moments in a simple model which considers the baryon stopping and pair production effects in the processes. It is shown that a single emission source model can explain the experimental data well. Centrality and energy dependence of the distributions and higher moments is discussed.

Local Multiplicity Fluctuations as a Signature of Critical Hadronization at LHC

In central Pb-Pb collisions at LHC the multiplicity of particles produced is so high that it should become feasible to examine the nature of transition from the deconfined quark-gluon state to the confined hadron state by methods that rely on the availability of high multiplicity events. We consider four classes of the transition process ranging from critical behavior to totally random behavior, depending on whether or not there is clustering of quarks and on whether or not there is contraction of dense clusters due to confinement. Fluctuations of bin multiplicities in each event are quantified, and then the event-by-event fluctuations of spatial patterns are analyzed. A sequence of measures are proposed and are shown to be effective in capturing the essence of the differences among the classes of simulated events. It is demonstrated that a specific index has a low value for critical transition but a larger value if the hadronization process is random.

Ridge Formation Induced by Jets in $pp$ Collisions at 7 TeV

An interpretation of the ridge phenomenon found in pp collisions at 7 TeV is given in terms of enhancement of soft partons due to energy loss of semihard jets. A description of ridge formation in nuclear collisions can directly be extended to pp collisions, since hydrodynamics is not used, and azimuthal anisotropy is generated by semihard scattering. Both the p_T and multiplicity dependencies are well reproduced. Some suggestions are made about other observables.

Effects of Near-side Two-jet Recombination on Away-side Correlation at LHC

The creation of partons with transverse momenta around 10 GeV/c in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC is expected to be so copious that the parton density may be high enough for neighboring jet cones to overlap. If the shower partons in adjacent jets can recombine to form trigger particles, the distribution of hadrons on the away side should be distinguishable from that due to the recoil of a single harder parton that can produce a similar trigger particle by fragmentation. The two-particle azimuthal correlation on the away side is generated by simulation of the two trigger types. Moments of the correlation distributions are calculated to exhibit their differences. A measure that can be determined by suitable analysis of the LHC data is suggested. It may reveal the footprint of two-jet recombination.

Scaling Behavior of the Azimuthal and Centrality Dependencies of Jet Production in Heavy-ion Collisions

For heavy-ion collisions at RHIC a scaling behavior is found in the dependencies on azimuthal angle $ϕ$ and impact parameter $b$ for pion production at high $p_T$ essentially independent of the hadronization process. The scaling variable is in terms of a dynamical path length $ξ$ that takes into account detailed properties of geometry, medium density and probability of hard scattering. It is shown in the recombination model how the nuclear modification factor depends on the average $\barξ(ϕ,b)$. The data for $π^0$ production at $p_T=$ 4-5 and 7-8 GeV/c at RHIC are shown to exhibit the same scaling behavior as found in the model calculation. Extension to back-to-back dijet production has been carried out, showing the existence of $\barξ$ scaling also in the away-side yield per trigger. At LHC the hard-parton density can be high enough to realize the likelihood of recombination of shower partons arising from neighboring jets. It is shown that such 2-jet recombination can cause strong violation of $\barξ$ scaling. Furthermore, the large value of $R_{AA}$ that exceeds 1 can become a striking signature of such a hadronization process at high energy.

Some Characteristic Parameters of Proton from the Bag Model

We treat the mass of a proton as the total static energy which can be separated into two parts that come from the contribution of quarks and gluons respectively. We adopt the essential of the bag model of hadron to discuss the structure of a proton and find that the calculated temperature, proton radius, the bag constant are compare well with QCD results if a proton is a thermal equilibrium system of quarks and gluons.

Production of strange particles at intermediate pT at RHIC

The recombination model is applied to the production of $K, ϕ, Λ$ and $Ω$ at all $p_T$ in central Au+Au collisions. The thermal-shower component of the recombination is found to be important for $K$ and $Λ$, but only in a minor way for $ϕ$ and $Ω$ in the intermediate to high $p_T$ region. The normalization and inverse slope of the thermal partons in the strange sector are determined by fitting the low-$p_T$ data. At higher $p_T$ the data of $K, ϕ, Λ$ and $Ω$ in the log scale are all well reproduced in our study that extends the thermal contribution and includes the shower contribution. The calculated result on the $Λ/K$ ratio rises to a maximum of around 2 at $p_T\approx 4$ GeV/c, arching over the data in linear scale. The production of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ are shown to arise mainly from the recombination of thermal partons, thus exhibiting exponential $p_T$ dependences in agreement with the data. Their ratio, $R_{Ω/ϕ}$, rises linearly to $p_T\approx 4$ GeV/c and develops a maximum at $p_T\approx 5.5$ GeV/c. It is argued that the $p_T$ spectra of $ϕ$ and $Ω$ reveal directly the partonic nature of the thermal source that characterizes quark-gluon plasma. Comments are made on the $Ω$ puzzle due to the simultaneous observation of both the exponential behavior of the $Ω$ spectrum in $p_T$ and the existence of low-$p_T$ particles associated with $Ω$ as trigger.

Detrended fluctuation analysis on the correlations of complex networks under attack and repair strategy

We analyze the correlation properties of the Erdos-Renyi random graph (RG) and the Barabasi-Albert scale-free network (SF) under the attack and repair strategy with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). The maximum degree k_max, representing the local property of the system, shows similar scaling behaviors for random graphs and scale-free networks. The fluctuations are quite random at short time scales but display strong anticorrelation at longer time scales under the same system size N and different repair probability p_re. The average degree <k>, revealing the statistical property of the system, exhibits completely different scaling behaviors for random graphs and scale-free networks. Random graphs display long-range power-law correlations. Scale-free networks are uncorrelated at short time scales; while anticorrelated at longer time scales and the anticorrelation becoming stronger with the increase of p_re.

Fragmentation or Recombination at High p_T?

All hadronization processes, including fragmentation, are shown to proceed through recombination. The shower partons in a jet turn out to play an important role in describing the p_T spectra of hadrons produced in heavy-ion collisions. Due to the recombination of the shower partons with the soft thermal partons, the structure of jets produced in AA collisions is not the same as that of jets produced in pp collisions.

preprint2004arXiv

Recombination of shower partons in fragmentation processes

We develop the notion of shower partons and determine their distributions in jets in the framework of the recombination model. The shower parton distributions obtained render a good fit of the fragmentation functions. We then illustrate the usefulness of the distributions in a problem where a jet is produced in the environment of thermal partons as in heavy-ion collisions. The recombination of shower and thermal partons is shown to be more important than fragmentation. Application to the study of two-particle correlation in a jet is also carried out.

Charge Fluctuations at Disoriented Chiral Transition

The signatures of the creation of a disoriented chiral condensate in heavy-ion collisions are studied in the Ginzburg-Landau description of chiral phase transition. Scaling properties are found that characterize the fluctuations of charged particles. There exists also an explicitly calculable measure that can directly be measured. Experimental procedures needed to find the signatures are discussed.

Centrality Dependence of Baryon and Meson Momentum Distributions in Proton-Nucleus Collisions

The proton and neutron inclusive distributions in the projectile fragmentation region of $pA$ collisions are studied in the valon model. Momentum degradation and flavor changes due to the nuclear medium are described at the valon level using two parameters. Particle production is treated by means of the recombination subprocess. The centrality dependences of the net proton and neutron spectra of the NA49 data are satisfactorily reproduced. The effective degradation length is determined to be 17 fm. Pion inclusive distributions can be calculated without any adjustable parameters.

Influence of statistical fluctuations on $K/π$ ratios in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The influence of pure statistical fluctuations on $K/π$ ratio is investigated in an event-by-event way. Poisson and the modified negative binomial distributions are used as the multiplicity distributions since they both have statistical background. It is shown that the distributions of the ratio in these cases are Gaussian, and the mean and relative variance are given analytically.
