Given a spectral triple (A,H,D) and a C∗-dynamical system (A,G,α) where A is dense in A and G is a locally compact group, we extend the triple to a triplet (B,H,D) on the crossed product G⋉α,redA which can be promoted to a modular-type twisted spectral triple within a general procedure exemplified by two cases: the C∗-algebra of the affine group and the conformal group acting on a complete Riemannian spin manifold.
The principal object in noncommutatve geometry is the spectral triple consisting of an algebra A, a Hilbert space H, and a Dirac operator D. Field theories are incorporated in this approach by the spectral action principle, that sets the field theory action to Tr f(D^2/Λ^2), where f is a real function such that the trace exists, and Λis a cutoff scale. In the low-energy (weak-field) limit the spectral action reproduces reasonably well the known physics including the standard model. However, not much is known about the spectral action beyond the low-energy approximation. In this paper, after an extensive introduction to spectral triples and spectral actions, we study various expansions of the spectral actions (exemplified by the heat kernel). We derive the convergence criteria. For a commutative spectral triple, we compute the heat kernel on the torus up the second order in gauge connection and consider limiting cases.
We construct discrete versions of κ-Minkowski space related to a certain compactness of the time coordinate. We show that these models fit into the framework of noncommutative geometry in the sense of spectral triples. The dynamical system of the underlying discrete groups (which include some Baumslag--Solitar groups) is heavily used in order to construct \emph{finitely summable} spectral triples. This allows to bypass an obstruction to finite-summability appearing when using the common regular representation. The dimension of these spectral triples is unrelated to the number of coordinates defining the κ-deformed Minkowski spaces.
We derive a commutative spectral triple and study the spectral action for a rather general geometric setting which includes the (skew-symmetric) torsion and the chiral bag conditions on the boundary. The spectral action splits into bulk and boundary parts. In the bulk, we clarify certain issues of the previous calculations, show that many terms in fact cancel out, and demonstrate that this cancellation is a result of the chiral symmetry of spectral action. On the boundary, we calculate several leading terms in the expansion of spectral action in four dimensions for vanishing chiral parameter θ of the boundary conditions, and show that θ=0 is a critical point of the action in any dimension and at all orders of the expansion.
We investigate manifolds with boundary in noncommutative geometry. Spectral triples associated to a symmetric differential operator and a local boundary condition are constructed. For a classical Dirac operator with a chiral boundary condition, we show that there is no tadpole.
Using the Chamseddine--Connes approach of the noncommutative action on spectral triples, we show that there are no tadpoles of any order for compact spin manifolds without boundary, and also consider a case of a chiral boundary condition. Using pseudodifferential techniques, we track zero terms in spectral actions.
There is a natural homomorphism of Lie pseudoalgebras from local vector fields to local rotations on a Riemannian manifold. We address the question whether this homomorphism is unique and give a positive answer in the perturbative regime around the flat metric.
Connes' view at Yang-Mills theories is reviewed with special emphasis on the gauge invariant scalar product. This landscape is shown to contain Chamseddine and Connes' noncommutative extension of general relativity restricted to flat space-time, if the top mass is between 172 and 204 GeV. Then the Higgs mass is between 188 and 201 GeV.
By a suitable choice of variables we show that every Connes-Lott model is a Yang-Mills-Higgs model. The contrary is far from being true. Necessary conditions are given. Our analysis is pedestrian and illustrated by examples.
