EPITIME: A Computational Framework for Integral Epidemic Models with Structure-Preserving Discretizations

We present EPITIME (EPidemic Integral models TIMe profile Explorer), a computational framework for the simulation of two classes of integral epidemic models: an age of infection model and an information dependent behavioural model. The framework combines structure preserving Non-Standard Finite Difference discretizations with modular implementations in MATLAB and Python, together with routines for parameter handling, input validation, performance assessment, and graphical interaction. The proposed methods preserve key qualitative properties of the continuous problems, including positivity, boundedness, invariant regions, and correct long term behaviour, independently of the time step. We outline the numerical schemes for both model classes and their main analytical properties, including first order convergence. We then describe the software architecture and illustrate its use through numerical experiments on asymptotic behaviour, inverse reconstruction of an infectivity kernel from COVID 19 incidence data, and behavioural dynamics under different memory kernels. Overall, EPITIME provides a reliable and accessible computational environment for the numerical study of renewal epidemic models.

Modeling the effects of information-dependent vaccination behavior on meningitis transmission

We propose a mathematical model to investigate the effects of information-dependent vaccination behavior on meningitis transmission. The information is represented by means of information index as early proposed in (d'Onofrio et al., Theor. pop. biol., 2007). We perform a qualitative analysis based on stability theory, focusing to the global stability of the disease free equilibrium (DFE) and the related transcritical bifurcation taking place at the threshold for the DFE. Finally, we assess the role of epidemiological and information parameters in the model dynamics through numerical simulations. Our simulations suggests that the impact of the human behavior critically depend on the average information delay. For example, it can induce recurrent epidemics, provided that transfer rate from the carrier to the infectious state is over a threshold. Otherwise, the endemic equilibrium is (at least) locally stable.

Linear Accelerator Test Facility at LNF Conceptual Design Report

Test beam and irradiation facilities are the key enabling infrastructures for research in high energy physics (HEP) and astro-particles. In the last 11 years the Beam-Test Facility (BTF) of the DAΦNE accelerator complex in the Frascati laboratory has gained an important role in the European infrastructures devoted to the development and testing of particle detectors. At the same time the BTF operation has been largely shadowed, in terms of resources, by the running of the DAΦNE electron-positron collider. The present proposal is aimed at improving the present performance of the facility from two different points of view: extending the range of application for the LINAC beam extracted to the BTF lines, in particular in the (in some sense opposite) directions of hosting fundamental physics and providing electron irradiation also for industrial users; extending the life of the LINAC beyond or independently from its use as injector of the DAΦNE collider, as it is also a key element of the electron/positron beam facility. The main lines of these two developments can be identified as: consolidation of the LINAC infrastructure, in order to guarantee a stable operation in the longer term; upgrade of the LINAC energy, in order to increase the facility capability (especially for the almost unique extracted positron beam); doubling of the BTF beam-lines, in order to cope with the signicant increase of users due to the much wider range of applications.

DAFNE Consolidation Program and Operation with the KLOE-2 Detector

After a long preparatory phase, including a wide hardware consolidation program, the Italian lepton collider DAFNE, is now systematically delivering data to the KLOE-2 experiment. In approximately 200 days of operation 1 fb-1 has been given to the detector limiting the background to a level compatible with an efficient data acquisition. Instantaneous and maximum daily integrated luminosity measured, so far, are considerably higher with respect to the previous KLOE runs, and are: L(inst) ~ 2.0 1032 cm-2s-1, and L(day) ~ 12.5 pb-1 respectively. A general review concerning refurbishing activities, machine optimization efforts and data taking performances is presented and discussed.

Analysis of a malaria model with mosquito host choice and bed-net control

A malaria model is formulated which includes the enhanced attractiveness of infectious humans to mosquitoes, as result of host manipulation by malaria parasite, and the human behavior, represented by insecticide-treated bed nets usage. The occurrence of a backward bifurcation at R_0=1 is shown to be possible, which implies that multiple endemic equilibria co-exist with a stable disease-free equilibrium when the basic reproduction number is less than unity. This phenomenon is found to be caused by disease-induced human mortality. The global asymptotic stability of the endemic equilibrium for R_0>1 is proved, by using the geometric approach to global stability. Therefore, the disease becomes endemic for $R_0>1$ regardless of the number of initial cases in both the human and vector populations. Finally, the impact of vector's host preferences and bed-net usage behavior on system dynamics is investigated.
