Uniform a priori estimates for positive solutions of the Lane-Emden system in the plane

We prove that positive solutions of the superlinear Lane-Emden system in a two-dimensional smooth bounded domain are bounded independently of the exponents in the system, provided the exponents are comparable. As a consequence, the energy of the solutions is uniformly bounded. In addition, the boundedness may fail if the exponents are not comparable.

Global integrability and boundary estimates for uniformly elliptic PDE in divergence form

We show that two classically known properties of positive supersolutions of uniformly elliptic PDEs, the boundary point principle (Hopf lemma) and global integrability, can be quantified with respect to each other. We obtain an extension to the boundary of the de Giorgi-Moser weak Harnack inequality, optimal with respect to the norms involved, for equations in divergence form.

Liouville-type theorems for unbounded solutions of elliptic equations in half-spaces

We prove that the Dirichlet problem for the Lane-Emden equation in a half-space has no positive solutions which grow at most like the distance to the boundary to a power given by the natural scaling exponent of the equation; in other words, we rule out {\it type~I grow-up} solutions. Such a nonexistence result was previously available only for bounded solutions, or under a restriction on the power in the nonlinearity. Instrumental in the proof are local pointwise bounds for the logarithmic gradient of the solution and its normal derivative, which we also establish.

Stationary states of reaction-diffusion and Schrödinger systems with inhomogeneous or controlled diffusion

We obtain classification, solvability and nonexistence theorems for positive stationary states of reaction-diffusion and Schrödinger systems involving a balance between repulsive and attractive terms. This class of systems contains PDE arising in biological models of Lotka-Volterra type, in physical models of Bose-Einstein condensates and in models of chemical reactions. We show, with different proofs, that the results obtained in [ARMA, 213 (2014), 129-169] for models with homogeneous diffusion are valid for general heterogeneous media, and even for controlled inhomogeneous diffusions.

Uniform bounds via regularity estimates for elliptic PDE with critical growth in the gradient

We prove non-uniqueness and study the behaviour of viscosity solutions of a class of uniformly elliptic fully nonlinear equations of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs type, with quadratic growth in the gradient. The crucial a priori bound for the solutions is proved through an argument which uses a boundary growth lemma, and consequences such as boundary "half"-Harnack inequalities, which are of independent interest. Our results are new even for linear equations.

Boundary regularity for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We provide regularity results at the boundary for continuous viscosity solutions to nonconvex fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations and inequalities in Euclidian domains. We show that (i) any solution of two sided inequalities with Pucci extremal operators is $C^{1,α}$ on the boundary; (ii) the solution of the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations is $C^{2,α}$ on the boundary; (iii) corresponding asymptotic expansions hold. This is an extension to viscosity solutions of the classical Krylov estimates for smooth solutions.

Proportionality of components, Liouville theorems and a priori estimates for noncooperative elliptic systems

We study qualitative properties of positive solutions of noncooperative, possibly nonvariational, elliptic systems. We obtain new classification and Liouville type theorems in the whole Euclidean space, as well as in half-spaces, and deduce a priori estimates and existence of positive solutions for related Dirichlet problems. We significantly improve the known results for a large class of systems involving a balance between repulsive and attractive terms. This class contains systems arising in biological models of Lotka-Volterra type, in physical models of Bose-Einstein condensates and in models of chemical reactions.

Existence and multiplicity for elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient

We show that a class of divergence-form elliptic problems with quadratic growth in the gradient and non-coercive zero order terms are solvable, under essentially optimal hypotheses on the coefficients in the equation. In addition, we prove that the solutions are in general not unique. The case where the zero order term has the opposite sign was already intensively studied and the uniqueness is the rule.

Solvability of nonlinear elliptic equations with gradient terms

We study the solvability in the whole Euclidean space of coercive quasi-linear and fully nonlinear elliptic equations modeled on $Δu\pm g(|\nabla u|)= f(u)$, $u\ge0$, where $f$ and $g$ are increasing continuous functions. We give conditions on $f$ and $g$ which guarantee the availability or the absence of positive solutions of such equations in $\R^N$. Our results considerably improve the existing ones and are sharp or close to sharp in the model cases. In particular, we completely characterize the solvability of such equations when $f$ and $g$ have power growth at infinity. We also derive a solvability statement for coercive equations in general form.

Singular solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations and applications

We study the properties of solutions of fully nonlinear, positively homogeneous elliptic equations near boundary points of Lipschitz domains at which the solution may be singular. We show that these equations have two positive solutions in each cone of $\mathbb{R}^n$, and the solutions are unique in an appropriate sense. We introduce a new method for analyzing the behavior of solutions near certain Lipschitz boundary points, which permits us to classify isolated boundary singularities of solutions which are bounded from either above or below. We also obtain a sharp Phragmén-Lindelöf result as well as a principle of positive singularities in certain Lipschitz domains.

Nonexistence of positive supersolutions of elliptic equations via the maximum principle

We introduce a new method for proving the nonexistence of positive supersolutions of elliptic inequalities in unbounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$. The simplicity and robustness of our maximum principle-based argument provides for its applicability to many elliptic inequalities and systems, including quasilinear operators such as the $p$-Laplacian, and nondivergence form fully nonlinear operators such as Bellman-Isaacs operators. Our method gives new and optimal results in terms of the nonlinear functions appearing in the inequalities, and applies to inequalities holding in the whole space as well as exterior domains and cone-like domains.

Sharp Liouville results for fully nonlinear equations with power-growth nonlinearities

We study fully nonlinear elliptic equations such as \[ F(D^2u) = u^p, \quad p>1, \] in $\R^n$ or in exterior domains, where $F$ is any uniformly elliptic, positively homogeneous operator. We show that there exists a critical exponent, depending on the homogeneity of the fundamental solution of $F$, that sharply characterizes the range of $p>1$ for which there exist positive supersolutions or solutions in any exterior domain. Our result generalizes theorems of Bidaut-Véron \cite{B} as well as Cutri and Leoni \cite{CL}, who found critical exponents for supersolutions in the whole space $\R^n$, in case $-F$ is Laplace's operator and Pucci's operator, respectively. The arguments we present are new and rely only on the scaling properties of the equation and the maximum principle.
