TOI-3862 b: A dense super-Neptune deep in the hot Neptune desert

The structure and evolution of close-in exoplanets are shaped by atmospheric loss and migration processes, which give rise to key population features such as the hot Neptune desert, ridge, and savanna - regions of the period-radius space whose boundaries offer critical insights into planetary formation and survival. As part of the KESPRINT collaboration, we selected the TESS transiting planet candidate TOI-3862.01 for radial velocity follow-up to confirm its planetary nature and characterize its mass and bulk properties. This planet candidate is of particular interest due to its position in the middle of the hot Neptune desert, making it a valuable probe for testing theories of planet migration and atmospheric loss. We confirmed the planetary nature and determined the mass of TOI-3862.01 (hereinafter TOI-3862b) by performing a joint fit with both transit and radial velocity data, precisely characterizing the bulk properties of this planet. TOI-3862b is a super-Neptune on a 1.56-day orbit around a Sun-like star with an effective temperature of 5300$\pm$50K. It has a mass of 53.7$_{-2.9}^{+2.8}$ M$_{\oplus}$ and a radius of 5.53$\pm$0.18 R$_{\oplus}$, corresponding to a density of 1.7$\pm$0.2 g/cm^3. This places it among the rare population of hot and dense super-Neptune desert planets. TOI-3862b, residing deep in the hot Neptune desert, represents a rare occurrence in an otherwise sparsely populated region, offering a valuable opportunity to probe the processes that may allow planets to survive in such environments.

The TESS-Keck Survey. XI. Mass Measurements for Four Transiting sub-Neptunes orbiting K dwarf TOI-1246

Multi-planet systems are valuable arenas for investigating exoplanet architectures and comparing planetary siblings. TOI-1246 is one such system, with a moderately bright K dwarf ($\rm{V=11.6,~K=9.9}$) and four transiting sub-Neptunes identified by TESS with orbital periods of $4.31~\rm{d},~5.90~\rm{d},~18.66~\rm{d}$, and $~37.92~\rm{d}$. We collected 130 radial velocity observations with Keck/HIRES and TNG/HARPS-N to measure planet masses. We refit the 14 sectors of TESS photometry to refine planet radii ($\rm{2.97 \pm 0.06~R_\oplus},\rm{2.47 \pm 0.08~R_\oplus}, \rm{3.46 \pm 0.09~R_\oplus}$, $\rm{3.72 \pm 0.16~R_\oplus}$), and confirm the four planets. We find that TOI-1246 e is substantially more massive than the three inner planets ($\rm{8.1 \pm 1.1 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{8.8 \pm 1.2 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{5.3 \pm 1.7 M_\oplus}$, $\rm{14.8 \pm 2.3 M_\oplus}$). The two outer planets, TOI-1246 d and TOI-1246 e, lie near to the 2:1 resonance ($\rm{P_{e}/P_{d}=2.03}$) and exhibit transit timing variations. TOI-1246 is one of the brightest four-planet systems, making it amenable for continued observations. It is one of only six systems with measured masses and radii for all four transiting planets. The planet densities range from $\rm{0.70 \pm 0.24}$ to $3.21 \pm 0.44 \rm{g/cm^3}$, implying a range of bulk and atmospheric compositions. We also report a fifth planet candidate found in the RV data with a minimum mass of 25.6 $\pm$ 3.6 $\rm{M_\oplus}$. This planet candidate is exterior to TOI-1246 e with a candidate period of 93.8 d, and we discuss the implications if it is confirmed to be planetary in nature.

Apparent motion of the circumstellar envelope of CQ Tau in scattered light

The study of spiral structures in protoplanetary disks is of great importance for understanding of processes in the disks, including planet formation. Bright spiral arms were detected in the disk of young star CQ Tau by Uyama et al. (2020) in H and L bands. The spiral arms are located inside the gap in millimeter size dust, recovered earlier using ALMA observations (Ubeira Gabellini et al. 2019). To explain the gap, Ubeira Gabellini et al. (2019) proposed the existence of a planet with the semimajor axis of 20 AU. We obtained multiepoch observations of a spiral feature in the circumstellar envelope of CQ Tau in Ic band using a novel technique of differential speckle polarimetry. The observations covering period from 2015 to 2021 allow us to estimate the pattern speed of spiral: $-0.2\pm1.1^{\circ}$/yr (68% credible interval, positive value indicates counter-clockwise rotation), assuming face-on orientation of the disk. This speed is significantly smaller than expected for a companion-induced spiral, if the perturbing body has the semimajor axis of 20 AU. We emphasize that the morphology of the spiral structure is likely to be strongly affected by shadows of a misaligned inner disk detected by Eisner et al. (2004).

Differential Speckle Polarimetry of Betelgeuse in 2019-2020: the rise is different from the fall

Recently published episodic spectral (Levesque and Massey, 2020) and high angular resolution (Montarges et al, 2020) observations of Betelgeuse suggest that the deep minimum of 2019-2020 was caused by an enhanced dust abundance in the stellar atmosphere. Detailed monitoring of such events may prove useful for constructing consistent physical models of mass loss by evolved stars. For such observations it is fundamentally important to employ methods resolving an inhomogeneous stellar atmosphere. We present the differential speckle polarimetric observations of Betelgeuse at 2.5-m telescope of Caucasian Mountain Observatory of SAI MSU covering the period of 2019-2020 minimum. The observations were secured on 17 dates at wavelengths 465, 550, 625 and 880 nm. The circumstellar reflection nebula with the angular size of $\approx0.1^{\prime\prime}$ was detected for all the dates and at all wavelengths. The morphology of the nebula changed significantly over the observational period. Net polarized brightness of the envelope remained constant until February 2020, while the stellar $V$ band flux decreased 2.5 times. Starting from mid-February 2020, polarized flux of the envelope rose 2.1 times, at the same time the star returned to the pre-minimum state of October 2019. Basing on these data and our low resolution spectrum obtained on 2020-04-06 we confirm a conclusion that the minimum is caused by the formation of a dust cloud located on the line of sight. A quantitative characterisation of this cloud will be possible when the data on its thermal radiation are employed.

On-sky demonstration of optical polaroastrometry

A method for measuring the difference between centroids of polarized flux and total flux of an astronomical object - {\it polaroastrometry} - is proposed. The deviation of the centroid of flux corresponding to Stokes parameter $Q$ or $U$ from the centroid of total flux multiplied by dimensionless Stokes parameter $q$ or $u$ respectively, was used as a signal. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated on the basis of observations made in the $V$ band by using an instrument combining features of a two-beam polarimeter with a rotating half-wave plate and a speckle interferometer. The polaroastrometric signal noise is 60-70 $μ$as rms for a total number of accumulated photoelectrons $N_e$ of $10^9$ from a 70-cm telescope; this corresponds to a total integration time of 500 sec and an object magnitude $V=6$ mag. At smaller $N_e$ the noise increases as $\approx 1.7^{\prime\prime}/\sqrt{N_e}$, while at larger $N_e$ it remains the same owing to imperfection of the half-wave plate. For main sequence stars that are unpolarized and polarized by interstellar dust and the Mira type variable R Tri the signal was undetectable. For the Mira type variable $χ$ Cyg the polaroastrometric signal is found to be $310\pm70$ and $300\pm70$ $μ$as for Stokes $Q$ and $U$ respectively; for $o$ Cet these values are $490\pm100$ and $1160\pm100$ $μ$as. The significant value of the polaroastrometric signal provides evidence of the asymmetry of the polarized flux distribution.

Study on atmospheric optical turbulence above Mt. Shatdzhatmaz in 2007--2013

We present the results of the atmospheric optical turbulence (OT) measurements performed atop Mt. Shatdzhatmaz at the installation site of new 2.5-m telescope of Sternberg Astronomical Institute. Nearly 300 000 vertical OT profiles from the ground up to an altitude of 23 km were obtained in the period November 2007 - June 2013 with the combined multi-aperture scintillation sensor (MASS) and differential image motion monitor (DIMM) instrument. The medians of the main OT characteristics computed over the whole dataset are as follows: the integral seeing $β_0 = 0.96$ arcsec, the free-atmosphere seeing $β_{free} = 0.43$ arcsec, and the isoplanatic angle $θ_0 = 2.07$ arcsec. The median atmospheric time constant is $τ_0 = 6.57 \mbox{ ms}$. The revealed long-term variability of these parameters on scales of months and years implies the need to take it into account in astroclimatic campaign planning. For example, the annual variation in the monthly $θ_0$ estimate amounts up to 30% while the time constant $τ_0$ changes by a factor of 2.5. Evaluation of the potential of Mt. Shatdzhatmaz in terms of high angular resolution observations indicates that in October--November, this site is as good as the best of studied summits in the world.

Performance Analysis of Differential Speckle Polarimetry

We consider a method for obtaining information on polarization of astronomical objects radiation at diffraction limited resolution - differential speckle polarimetry. As an observable we propose to use averaged cross spectrum of two short-exposure images corresponding to orthogonal polarizations, normalized by averaged power spectrum of one of images. Information on polarization can be extracted if object under study can be described by model with several parameters. We consider two examples: point-like source whose photocenter position depends on orientation of passing polarization and exozodiacal dust disc around a star. In first case difference between photocenter positions can be measured with precision of 8 mirco-arcseconds for 2.5-m telescope and 1.2 micro-arcseconds for 6-m telescope for object V=13. For second example method allows detection of discs around central star of V=1 with fractional luminosities of 1.8E-5 and 5.6E-6 for 2.5-m and 6-m telescope, respectively.

Twilight observations with MASS-DIMM

In this paper we describe the method of measurement of optical turbulence in twilight with MASS-DIMM. Some results of such observations carried out with SAI ASM installed on Mt. Shatdzatmaz: 1) characteristics of optical turbulence don't change significantly in transition between day and night 2) twilight measurements of seeing can be used for selection of observational program for big telescope on condition that program switching is long - longer than 30-40 minutes. In conclusions we list upgrades of ASM system needed to improve capabilities to observe on twilight.
