Coderivative-Based Semi-Newton Method in Nonsmooth Difference Programming

This paper addresses the study of a new class of nonsmooth optimization problems, where the objective is represented as a difference of two generally nonconvex functions. We propose and develop a novel Newton-type algorithm to solving such problems, which is based on the coderivative generated second-order subdifferential (generalized Hessian) and employs advanced tools of variational analysis. Well-posedness properties of the proposed algorithm are derived under fairly general requirements, while constructive convergence rates are established by using additional assumptions including the Kurdyka--Łojasiewicz condition. We provide applications of the main algorithm to solving a general class of nonsmooth nonconvex problems of structured optimization that encompasses, in particular, optimization problems with explicit constraints. Finally, applications and numerical experiments are given for solving practical problems that arise in biochemical models, constrained quadratic programming, etc., where advantages of our algorithms are demonstrated in comparison with some known techniques and results.

A Globally Convergent Proximal Newton-Type Method in Nonsmooth Convex Optimization

The paper proposes and justifies a new algorithm of the proximal Newton type to solve a broad class of nonsmooth composite convex optimization problems without strong convexity assumptions. Based on advanced notions and techniques of variational analysis, we establish implementable results on the global convergence of the proposed algorithm as well as its local convergence with superlinear and quadratic rates. For certain structured problems, the obtained local convergence conditions do not require the local Lipschitz continuity of the corresponding Hessian mappings that is a crucial assumption used in the literature to ensure a superlinear convergence of other algorithms of the proximal Newton type. The conducted numerical experiments of solving the $l_1$ regularized logistic regression model illustrate the possibility of applying the proposed algorithm to deal with practically important problems.

Inexact reduced gradient methods in nonconvex optimization

This paper proposes and develops new linesearch methods with inexact gradient information for finding stationary points of nonconvex continuously differentiable functions on finite-dimensional spaces. Some abstract convergence results for a broad class of linesearch methods are stablished. A general scheme for inexact reduced gradient (IRG) methods is proposed, where the errors in the gradient approximation automatically adapt with the magnitudes of the exact gradients. The sequences of iterations are shown to obtain stationary accumulation points when different stepsize selections are employed. Convergence results with constructive convergence rates for the developed IRG methods are established under the Kurdyka- Lojasiewicz property. The obtained results for the IRG methods are confirmed by encouraging numerical experiments, which demonstrate advantages of automatically controlled errors in IRG methods over other frequently used error selections.

Optimal Control of a Quasi-Variational Sweeping Process

The paper addresses the study of a class of evolutionary quasi-variational inequalities of the parabolic type arising in the formation and growth models of granular and cohensionless materials. Such models and their mathematical descriptions are highly challenging and require powerful tools of their analysis and implementation. We formulate a space-time continuous optimal control problem for a basic model of this type, develop several regularization and approximation procedures, and establish the existence of optimal solutions for the time-continuous and space-discrete problem. Viewing a version of this problem as a controlled quasi-variational sweeping process leads us to deriving necessary optimality conditions for the fully discrete problem by using the advanced machinery of variational analysis and generalized differentiation.

Vector Optimization with Domination Structures: Variational Principles and Applications

This paper addresses a large class of vector optimization problems in infinite-dimensional spaces with respect to two important binary relations derived from domination structures. Motivated by theoretical challenges as well as by applications to some models in behavioral sciences, we establish new variational principles that can be viewed as far-going extensions of the Ekeland variational principle to cover domination vector settings. Our approach combines advantages of both primal and dual techniques in variational analysis with providing useful suficient conditions for the existence of variational traps in behavioral science models with variable domination structures.

Algebraic Core and Convex Calculus without Topology

In this paper we study the concept of algebraic core for convex sets in general vector spaces without any topological structure and then present its applications to problems of convex analysis and optimization. Deriving the equivalence between the Hahn-Banach theorem and and a simple version of the separation theorem of convex sets in vector spaces allows us to develop a geometric approach to generalized differential calculus for convex sets, set-valued mappings, and extended-real-valued functions with qualification conditions formulated in terms of algebraic cores for such objects. We also obtain a precise formula for computing the subdifferential of optimal value functions associated with convex problems of parametric optimization in vector spaces. Functions of this type play a crucial role in many aspects of convex optimization and its applications.

Discrete Approximations and Optimal Control of Nonsmooth Perturbed Sweeping Processes

The main goal of this paper is developing the method of discrete approximations to derive necessary optimality conditions for a class of constrained sweeping processes with nonsmooth perturbations. Optimal control problems for sweeping processes have been recently recognized among the most interesting and challenging problems in modern control theory for discontinuous differential inclusions with irregular dynamics and implicit state constrained, while deriving necessary optimality conditions for their local minimizers have been significantly based on the smoothness of controlled dynamic perturbations. To overcome these difficulties, we use the method of discrete approximations and employ advanced tools of second-order variational analysis. This approach allows us to obtain new necessary optimality conditions for nonsmooth and nonconvex discrete-time problems of the sweeping type. Then we employ the obtained conditions and the strong convergence of discrete approximations to establish novel results for original nonsmooth sweeping control problems that include extended Euler-Lagrange and maximization conditions for local minimizers. Finally, we present applications of the obtained results to solving a controlled mobile robot model with a nonsmooth sweeping dynamics that is of some practical interest.

New extremal principles with applications to stochastic and semi-infinite programming

This paper develops new extremal principles of variational analysis that are motivated by applications to constrained problems of stochastic programming and semi-infinite programming without smoothness and/or convexity assumptions. These extremal principles concern measurable set-valued mappings/multifunctions with values in finite-dimensional spaces and are established in both approximate and exact forms. The obtained principles are instrumental to derive via variational approaches integral representations and upper estimates of regular and limiting normals cones to essential intersections of sets defined by measurable multifunctions, which are in turn crucial for novel applications to stochastic and semi-infinite programming.

Optimization and Discrete Approximation of Sweeping Processes with Controlled Moving Sets and Perturbations

This paper addresses a new class of optimal control problems for perturbed sweeping processes with measurable controls in additive perturbations of the dynamics and smooth controls in polyhedral moving sets. We develop a constructive discrete approximation procedure that allows us to strongly approximate any feasible trajectory of the controlled sweeping process by feasible discrete trajectories and also establish a $W^{1,2}$-strong convergence of optimal trajectories for discretized control problems to a given local minimizer of the original continuous-time sweeping control problem of the Bolza type. Employing advanced tools of first-order and second-order variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we derive necessary optimality conditions for discrete optimal solutions under fairly general assumptions formulated entirely in terms of the given data. The obtained results give us efficient suboptimality ("almost optimality") conditions for the original sweeping control problem that are illustrated by a nontrivial numerical example.

Parabolic Regularity in Geometric Variational Analysis

The paper is mainly devoted to systematic developments and applications of geometric aspects of second-order variational analysis that are revolved around the concept of parabolic regularity of sets. This concept has been known in variational analysis for more than two decades while being largely underinvestigated. We discover here that parabolic regularity is the key to derive new calculus rules and computation formulas for major second-order generalized differential constructions of variational analysis in connection with some properties of sets that go back to classical differential geometry and geometric measure theory. The established results of second-order variational analysis and generalized differentiation, being married to the developed calculus of parabolic regularity, allow us to obtain novel applications to both qualitative and quantitative/numerical aspects of constrained optimization including second-order optimality conditions, augmented Lagrangians, etc. under weak constraint qualifications.

Complete Characterizations of Tilt Stability in Nonlinear Programming under Weakest Qualification Conditions

This paper is devoted to the study of tilt stability of local minimizers for classical nonlinear programs with equality and inequality constraints in finite dimensions described by twice continuously differentiable functions. The importance of tilt stability has been well recognized from both theoretical and numerical perspectives of optimization, and this area of research has drawn much attention in the literature, especially in recent years. Based on advanced techniques of variational analysis and generalized differentiation, we derive here complete pointbased second-order characterizations of tilt-stable minimizers entirely in terms of the initial program data under the new qualification conditions, which are the weakest ones for the study of tilt stability.

Second-order analysis of piecewise linear functions with applications to optimization and stability

This paper is devoted to second-order variational analysis of a rather broad class of extended-real-valued piecewise liner functions and their applications to various issues of optimization and stability. Based on our recent explicit calculations of the second-order subdifferential for such functions, we establish relationships between nondegeneracy and second-order qualification for fully amenable compositions involving piecewise linear functions. We then provide a second-order characterization of full stable local minimizers in composite optimization and constrained minimax problems.

Subdifferentials of Nonconvex Integral Functionals in Banach Spaces with Applications to Stochastic Dynamic Programming

The paper concerns the investigation of nonconvex and nondifferentiable integral functionals on general Banach spaces, which may not be reflexive and/or separable. Considering two major subdifferentials of variational analysis, we derive nonsmooth versions of the Leibniz rule on subdifferentiation under the integral sign, where the integral of the subdifferential set-valued mappings generated by Lipschitzian integrands is understood in the Gelfand sense. Besides examining integration over complete measure spaces and also over those with nonatomic measures, our special attention is drawn to a stronger version of measure nonatomicity, known as saturation, to invoke the recent results of the Lyapunov convexity theorem type for the Gelfand integral of the subdifferential mappings. The main results are applied to the subdifferential study of the optimal value functions and deriving the corresponding necessary optimality conditions in nonconvex problems of stochastic dynamic programming with discrete time on the infinite horizon.

Generalized differentiation of piecewise linear functions in second-order variational analysis

The paper is devoted to a comprehensive second-order study of a remarkable class of convex extended-real-valued functions that is highly important in many aspects of nonlinear and variational analysis, specifically those related to optimization and stability. This class consists of lower semicontinuous functions with possibly infinite values on finite-dimensional spaces, which are labeled as piecewise linear ones and can be equivalently described via the convexity of their epigraphs. In this the paper we calculate the second-order subdifferentials (generalized Hessians) of arbitrary convex piecewise linear functions, together with the corresponding geometric objects, entirely in terms of their initial data. The obtained formulas allow us, in particular, to justify a new exact (equality-type) second-order sum rule for such functions in the general nonsmooth setting.

Optimal control of a perturbed sweeping process via discrete discrete approximations

The paper addresses an optimal control problem for a perturbed sweeping process of the rate-independent hysteresis type described by a controlled "play and stop" operator with separately controlled perturbations. This problem can be reduced to dynamic optimization of a state-constrained unbounded differential inclusion with highly irregular data that cannot be treated by means of known results in optimal control theory for differential inclusions. We develop the method of discrete approximations, which allows us to adequately replace the original optimal control problem by a sequence of well-posed finite-dimensional optimization problems whose optimal solutions strongly converge to that of the controlled perturbed sweeping process. To solve the discretized control systems, we derive effective necessary optimality conditions by using second-order generalized differential tools of variational analysis that explicitly calculated in terms of the given problem data.

Optimal control of the sweeping process over polyhedral controlled sets

The paper addresses a new class of optimal control problems governed by the dissipative and discontinuous differential inclusion of the sweeping/Moreau process while using controls to determine the best shape of moving convex polyhedra in order to optimize the given Bolza-type functional, which depends on control and state variables as well as their velocities. Besides the highly non-Lipschitzian nature of the unbounded differential inclusion of the controlled sweeping process, the optimal control problems under consideration contain intrinsic state constraints of the inequality and equality types. All of this creates serious challenges for deriving necessary optimality conditions. We develop here the method of discrete approximations and combine it with advanced tools of first-order and second-order variational analysis and generalized differentiation. This approach allows us to establish constructive necessary optimality conditions for local minimizers of the controlled sweeping process expressed entirely in terms of the problem data under fairly unrestrictive assumptions. As a by-product of the developed approach, we prove the strong $W^{1,2}$-convergence of optimal solutions of discrete approximations to a given local minimizer of the continuous-time system and derive necessary optimality conditions for the discrete counterparts. The established necessary optimality conditions for the sweeping process are illustrated by several examples.

Optimality conditions for a controlled sweeping process with applications to the crowd motion model

The paper concerns the study and applications of a new class of optimal control problems governed by a perturbed sweeping process of the hysteresis type with control functions acting in both play-and-stop operator and additive perturbations. Such control problems can be reduced to optimization of discontinuous and unbounded differential inclusions with pointwise state constraints, which are immensely challenging in control theory and prevent employing conventional variation techniques to derive necessary optimality conditions. We develop the method of discrete approximations married with appropriate generalized differential tools of modern variational analysis to overcome principal difficulties in passing to the limit from optimality conditions for finite-difference systems. This approach leads us to nondegenerate necessary conditions for local minimizers of the controlled sweeping process expressed entirely via the problem data. Besides illustrative examples, we apply the obtained results to an optimal control problem associated with of the crowd motion model of traffic flow in a corridor, which is formulated in this paper. The derived optimality conditions allow us to develop an effective procedure to solve this problem in a general setting and completely calculate optimal solutions in particular situations.

In this paper we introduce new notions of local extremality for finite and infinite systems of closed sets and establish the corresponding extremal principles for them called here rated extremal principles. These developments are in the core geometric theory of variational analysis. We present their applications to calculus and optimality conditions for problems with infinitely many constraints.

Tangential Extremal Principles for Finite and Infinite Systems of Sets, I: Basic Theory

In this paper we develop new extremal principles in variational analysis that deal with finite and infinite systems of convex and nonconvex sets. The results obtained, unified under the name of tangential extremal principles, combine primal and dual approaches to the study of variational systems being in fact first extremal principles applied to infinite systems of sets. The first part of the paper concerns the basic theory of tangential extremal principles while the second part presents applications to problems of semi-infinite programming and multiobjective optimization.

The Smallest Enclosing Ball Problem and the Smallest Intersecting Ball Problem: Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions

In this paper we study the following problems: given a finite number of nonempty closed subsets of a normed space, find a ball with the smallest radius that encloses all of the sets, and find a ball with the smallest radius that intersects all of the sets. These problems can be viewed as generalized versions of the smallest enclosing circle problem introduced in the 19th century by Sylvester which asks for the circle of smallest radius enclosing a given set of finite points in the plane. We will focus on the sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of an optimal solution for each problem, while the study of optimality conditions and numerical implementation will be addressed in our next projects.
