Effect of collective molecular reorientations on Brownian motion of colloids in nematic liquid crystal

In the simplest realization of Brownian motion, a colloidal sphere moves randomly in an isotropic fluid; its mean squared displacement (MSD) grows linearly with time $\textitτ$. Brownian motion in an orientationally ordered fluid, a nematic, is anisotropic, with the MSD being larger along the axis of molecular orientation, called the director. We show that at short time scales, the anisotropic diffusion in a nematic becomes also anomalous, with the MSD growing slower (subdiffusion) and faster (superdiffusion) than $\textitτ$. The anomalous diffusion occurs at time scales that correspond to the relaxation times of director deformations around the sphere. Once the nematic melts, the diffusion becomes normal and isotropic. The experiment shows that the deformations and fluctuations of long-range orientational order profoundly influence diffusive regimes.

Energy representation for out-of-equilibrium Brownian-like systems: steady states and fluctuation relations

Stochastic dynamics in the energy representation is employed as a method to study non-equilibrium Brownian-like systems. It is shown that the equation of motion for the energy of such systems can be taken in the form of the Langevin equation with multiplicative noise. Properties of the steady states are examined by solving the Fokker-Planck equation for the energy distribution functions. The generalized integral fluctuation theorem is deduced for the systems characterized by the shifted probability flux operator. There are a number of entropy and fluctuation relations such as the Hatano-Sasa identity and the Jarzynski's equality that follow from this theorem.
