Heterotic Strings on ${\mathbb T^3}/{\mathbb Z_2}$, Nikulin involutions and M-theory

We first describe the low energy dynamics of ten dimensional heterotic supergravity compactified on the smooth, flat 3-manifold ${\mathbb T^3}/{\mathbb Z_2}$, without supersymmetry, and explain how it arises from flat heterotic gauge fields. The semi-classical theory has both Coulomb and Higgs branches of non-supersymmetric vacua. We then give an exact worldsheet description as asymmetric orbifolds of $\mathbb T^3$, where the orbifold generator involves a Nikulin non-symplectic involution $θ$ of the even self-dual lattice $Γ_{(19,3)}$. Along the way we briefly compare our findings with M-theory on $\text{K3}/θ$. Our construction gives a novel CFT description of the semi-classical field theory moduli space. In particular, the Wilson line parameters in the lattice $I\subset Γ_{(19,3)}$ of signature $(19-s,1)$ which is invariant under $θ$, and in its orthogonal complement $N$, correspond respectively to Coulomb and Higgs branch moduli. There is a rich pattern of transitions amongst Higgs and Coulomb branches which we describe using the worldsheet theory.

A circle quotient of a $G_2$ cone

A study is made of $R^6$ as a singular quotient of the conical space $R^+\times CP^3$ with holonomy $G_2$ with respect to an obvious action by $U(1)$ on $CP^3$ with fixed points. Closed expressions are found for the induced metric, and for both the curvature and symplectic 2-forms characterizing the reduction. All these tensors are invariant by a diagonal action of $SO(3)$ on $R^6$, which can be used effectively to describe the resulting geometrical features.

Supersymmetry, Ricci Flat Manifolds and the String Landscape

A longstanding question in superstring/$M$ theory is does it predict supersymmetry below the string scale? We formulate and discuss a necessary condition for this to be true; this is the mathematical conjecture that all stable, compact Ricci flat manifolds have special holonomy in dimensions below eleven. Almost equivalent is the proposal that the landscape of all geometric, stable, string/$M$ theory compactifications to Minkowski spacetime (at leading order) are supersymmetric. For simply connected manifolds, we collect together a number of physically relevant mathematical results, emphasising some key outstanding problems and perhaps less well known results. For non-simply connected, non-supersymmetric Ricci flat manifolds we demonstrate that many cases suffer from generalised Witten bubble of nothing instabilities.

The Axiverse induced Dark Radiation Problem

The string/$M$ theory Axiverse -- a plethora of very light Axion Like Particles (ALPs) with a vast range of masses -- is arguably a generic prediction of string/$M$ theory. String/$M$ theory also tends to predict that the early Universe is dominated by moduli fields. When the heavy moduli decay, before nucleosynthesis, they produce dark radiation in the form of relativistic ALPs. Generically one estimates that the number of relativistic species grows with the number of axions in the Axiverse, in contradiction to the observations that $N_{eff} \leq 4$. We explain this problem in detail and suggest some possible solutions to it. The simplest solution requires that the lightest modulus decays only into its own axion superpartner plus Standard Model particles and this severely constrains the moduli Kahler potential and mass matrix.

Bounds on Scalar Masses in Theories of Moduli Stabilization

In recent years it has been realised that pre-BBN decays of moduli can be a significant source of dark matter production, giving a `non-thermal WIMP miracle' and substantially reduced fine-tuning in cosmological axion physics. We study moduli masses and sharpen the claim that moduli dominated the pre-BBN Universe. We conjecture that in any string theory with stabilized moduli there will be at least one modulus field whose mass is of order (or less than) the gravitino mass. Cosmology then generically requires the gravitino mass not be less than about 30 TeV and the cosmological history of the Universe is non-thermal prior to BBN. Stable LSP's produced in these decays can account for the observed dark matter if they are `wino-like.' We briefly consider implications for the LHC, rare decays, and dark matter direct detection and point out that these results could prove challenging for models attempting to realize gauge mediation in string theory.

Compactified String Theories -- Generic Predictions for Particle Physics

In recent years it has been realized that in string/$M$ theories compactified to four dimensions which satisfy cosmological constraints, it is possible to make some generic predictions for particle physics and dark matter: a non-thermal cosmological history before primordial nucleosynthesis, a scale of supersymmetry breaking which is "high" as in gravity mediation, scalar superpartners too heavy to be produced at the LHC (although gluino production is expected in many cases), and a significant fraction of dark matter in the form of axions. When the matter and gauge spectrum below the compactification scale is that of the MSSM, a robust prediction of about 125 GeV for the Higgs boson mass, predictions for various aspects of dark matter physics, as well as predictions for future precision measurements, can be made. As a prototypical example, $M$ theory compactified on a manifold of $G_2$ holonomy leads to a good candidate for our "string vacuum", with the TeV scale emerging from the Planck scale, a de Sitter vacuum, robust electroweak symmetry breaking, and solutions of the weak and strong CP problems. In this article we review how these and other results were derived, from the key theoretical ideas to the final phenomenological predictions.

Mixed Wino-Axion Dark Matter in String/M Theory and the 130 GeV Gamma-line "Signal"

String/M theory compactifications with low energy supersymmetry tend to predict that dark matter has two components: axions and WIMPs \cite{1004.5138,1204.2795}. In accord with this, we show that the tentative 130 GeV gamma-line signal reported in \cite{1204.2797} can be interpreted as arising from the annihilation of 145 GeV mass, Wino-like WIMPs into a Z-boson and a photon. In this context, the signal implies a second component of dark matter which we interpret as being composed of axions - the relative Wino/Axion abundances being approximately equal. Further predictions are implied: signals in both diffuse and monochromatic photons from dwarf spheroidal galaxies; monochromatic photons with energy 145 GeV; for the LHC, the Higgs boson mass has been predicted in this framework \cite{1112.1059}, and the current Higgs limits provide interesting constraints on the mass of the Gluino.

Theory and Phenomenology of mu in M theory

We consider a solution to the mu-problem within M theory on a G2-manifold. Our study is based upon the discrete symmetry proposed by Witten that forbids the mu-term and solves the doublet-triplet splitting problem. We point out that the symmetry must be broken by moduli stabilization, describing in detail how this can occur. The mu-term is generated via Kahler interactions after strong dynamics in the hidden sector generate a potential which stabilizes all moduli and breaks supersymmetry with m_{3/2} ~ 20 - 30 TeV. We show that mu is suppressed relative to the gravitino mass, by higher dimensional operators, mu ~ 0.1 m_{3/2} ~ 2-3 TeV. This necessarily gives a Higgsino component to the (mostly Wino) LSP, and a small but non-negligible LSP-nucleon scattering cross-section. The maximum, spin-independent cross-sections are not within reach of the current XENON100 experiment, but are within reach of upcoming runs and upgrades.

An M Theory Solution to the Strong CP Problem and Constraints on the Axiverse

We give an explicit realization of the "String Axiverse" discussed in Arvanitaki et. al \cite{Arvanitaki:2009fg} by extending our previous results on moduli stabilization in $M$ theory to include axions. We extend the analysis of \cite{Arvanitaki:2009fg} to allow for high scale inflation that leads to a moduli dominated pre-BBN Universe. We demonstrate that an axion which solves the strong-CP problem naturally arises and that both the axion decay constants and GUT scale can consistently be around $2\times 10^{16}$ GeV with a much smaller fine tuning than is usually expected. Constraints on the Axiverse from cosmological observations, namely isocurvature perturbations and tensor modes are described. Extending work of Fox et. al \cite{Fox:2004kb}, we note that {\it the observation of tensor modes at Planck will falsify the Axiverse completely.} Finally we note that Axiverse models whose lightest axion has mass of order $10^{-15}$ eV and with decay constants of order $5\times 10^{14}$ GeV require no (anthropic) fine-tuning, though standard unification at $10^{16}$ GeV is difficult to accommodate.

Supersymmetry Breaking, Moduli Stabilization and Hidden U(1) Breaking in M-Theory

We calculate and explore the moduli potential for M-Theory compactified on G_2-manifolds in which the superpotential is dominated by a single membrane instanton term plus one from an asymptotically free hidden sector gauge interaction. We show that all moduli can be stabilized and that hidden sector gauge symmetries can be Higgsed at a high scale. We then compute the spectrum of superpartner masses at the GUT scale and evolve it to the electroweak scale. We find a spectrum which is very similar to the G_2-MSSM with light gauginos - accessible at the LHC - and a neutral wino dark matter candidate.

A Non-thermal WIMP Miracle

Light scalar fields with only gravitational strength couplings are typically present in UV complete theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. In the early universe it is natural for these fields to dominate the energy density, and their subsequent decay, if prior to BBN, will typically yield some dark matter particles in their decay products. In this paper we make the observation that a Non-thermal WIMP `Miracle' may result: that is, in the simplest solution to the cosmological moduli problem, non-thermally produced WIMPs can naturally account for the observed dark matter relic density. Such a solution may be generic in string theory compactifications.
