Solving reaction-diffusion equations on evolving surfaces defined by biological image data

We present a computational approach for solving reaction-diffusion equations on evolving surfaces which have been obtained from cell image data. It is based on finite element spaces defined on surface triangulations extracted from time series of 3D images. A model for the transport of material between the subsequent surfaces is required where we postulate a velocity in normal direction. We apply the technique to image data obtained from a spreading neutrophil cell. By simulating FRAP experiments we investigate the impact of the evolving geometry on the recovery. We find that for idealised FRAP conditions, changes in membrane geometry, easily account for differences of $\times 10$ in recovery half-times, which shows that experimentalists must take great care when interpreting membrane photobleaching results. We also numerically solve an activator -- depleted substrate system and report on the effect of the membrane movement on the pattern evolution.

The Cahn-Hilliard equation on an evolving surface

We study the asymptotic limit of the Cahn-Hilliard equation on an evolving surface with prescribed velocity. The method of formally matched asymptotic expansions is extended to account for the movement of the domain. We consider various forms for the mobility and potential functions, in particular, with regards to the scaling of the mobility with the interface thickness parameter. Mullins-Sekerka, but also surface diffusion type problems, can be derived featuring additional terms which are due to the domain evolution. The asymptotic behaviour is supported and further explored with some numerical simulations.

Curve shortening flow coupled to lateral diffusion

We present and analyze a semi-discrete finite element scheme for a system consisting of a geometric evolution equation for a curve and a parabolic equation on the evolving curve. More precisely, curve shortening flow with a forcing term that depends on a field defined on the curve is coupled with a diffusion equation for that field. The scheme is based on ideas of \cite{D99} for the curve shortening flow and \cite{DE07} for the parabolic equation on the moving curve. Additional estimates are required in order to show convergence, most notably with respect to the length element: While in \cite{D99} an estimate of its error was sufficient we here also need to estimate the time derivative of the error which arises from the diffusion equation. Numerical simulation results support the theoretical findings.
