Pervasive Vulnerability Analysis and Defense for QKD-based Quantum Private Query

Quantum Private Query (QPQ) based on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is among the most practically viable quantum communication protocols, with application value second only to QKD itself. However, prevalent security vulnerabilities in the post-processing stages of most existing QKD-based QPQ protocols have been severely overlooked. This study focuses on hidden information extraction under undetermined signal bits, revealing that most such QPQ protocols face severe security threats even without complex quantum resources. Specifically, direct observation attack causes incremental information leakage, while the minimum error discrimination attack efficiently steals additional database inforamtion. To address these critical flaws, the proposed multi-encryption defense scheme is compatible with existing QPQ protocols. The study demonstrates the necessity of the multi-encryption strategy for the security of databases in QPQ, providing key theoretical and technical support for constructing practical QPQ protocols resistant to real-world attacks.

ARShopping: In-Store Shopping Decision Support Through Augmented Reality and Immersive Visualization

Online shopping gives customers boundless options to choose from, backed by extensive product details and customer reviews, all from the comfort of home; yet, no amount of detailed, online information can outweigh the instant gratification and hands-on understanding of a product that is provided by physical stores. However, making purchasing decisions in physical stores can be challenging due to a large number of similar alternatives and limited accessibility of the relevant product information (e.g., features, ratings, and reviews). In this work, we present ARShopping: a web-based prototype to visually communicate detailed product information from an online setting on portable smart devices (e.g., phones, tablets, glasses), within the physical space at the point of purchase. This prototype uses augmented reality (AR) to identify products and display detailed information to help consumers make purchasing decisions that fulfill their needs while decreasing the decision-making time. In particular, we use a data fusion algorithm to improve the precision of the product detection; we then integrate AR visualizations into the scene to facilitate comparisons across multiple products and features. We designed our prototype based on interviews with 14 participants to better understand the utility and ease of use of the prototype.

High-throughput decoder of quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with limited precision for continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems

More than Mbps secret key rate was demonstrated for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems, but real-time postprocessing is not allowed, which is restricted by the throughput of the error correction decoding in postprocessing. In this paper, a high-throughput FPGA-based quasi-cyclic LDPC decoder is proposed and implemented to support Mbps real-time secret key rate generation for CV-QKD for the first time. A residual bit error correction algorithm is used to solve the problem of high frame errors rate (FER) caused by the limited precision of the decoder. Specifically, real-time high-speed decoding for CV-QKD systems with typical code rates 0.2 and 0.1 is implemented on a commercial FPGA, and two throughputs of 360.92Mbps and 194.65Mbps are achieved, respectively, which can support 17.97 Mbps and 2.48 Mbps real-time generation of secret key rates under typical transmission distances of 25km and 50km, correspondingly. The proposed method paves the way for high-rate real-time CV-QKD deployment in secure metropolitan area network.

Secure two-way fiber-optic time transfer against sub-ns asymmetric delay attack

Two-way fiber-optic time transfer is a promising precise time synchronization technique with sub-nanosecond accuracy. However, asymmetric delay attack is a serious threat which cannot be prevent by any encryption method. In this paper, a dynamic model based scheme is proposed to defense the sub-nanosecond asymmetric delay attack. A threshold is set according to the estimated time difference by a two-state clock model where the fixed frequency difference is excluded from the time difference to detect the asymmetric delay attack which is smaller than the time difference induced by the fixed frequency difference. Theoretical simulation and experimental demonstration are implemented to prove the feasibility of the scheme. A two-way fiber-optic time transfer system with time stability with 24.5ps, 3.98ps, and 2.95ps at 1s, 10s, and 100s averaging time is shown under sub-ns asymmetric time delay attack experimentally. The proposed method provides a promising secure sub-ns precise time synchronization technique against asymmetric delay attack.

Finite-size analysis of continuous variable source-independent quantum random number generation

We study the impact of finite-size effect on continuous variable source-independent quantum random number generation. The central-limit theorem and maximum likelihood estimation theorem are used to derive the formula which could output the statistical fluctuations and determine upper bound of parameters of practical quantum random number generation. With these results, we can see the check data length and confidence probability has intense relevance to the final randomness, which can be adjusted according to the demand in implementation. Besides, other key parameters, such as sampling range size and sampling resolution, have also been considered in detail. It is found that the distribution of quantified output related with sampling range size has significant effects on the loss of final randomness due to finite-size effect. The overall results indicate that the finite-size effect should be taken into consideration for implementing the continuous variable source-independent quantum random number generation in practical.

High-throughput GPU layered decoder of multi-edge type low density parity check codes in continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems

The decoding throughput in the postprocessing is one of the bottlenecks for a continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) system. In this paper, we propose a layered decoder to decode quasi-cyclic multi-edge type LDPC (QC-METLDPC) codes based on graphic processing unit (GPU) in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems. We optimize the storage method of the parity check matrix, merge the sub-matrices which are unrelated, and decode multiple codewords in parallel on GPU. Simulation results demonstrate that the average decoding speed of LDPC codes with three typical code rates, i.e., 0.1, 0.05 and 0.02, is up to 64.11Mbits/s, 48.65Mbits/s and 39.51Mbits/s, respectively, when decoding 128 codewords of length 106 simultaneously without early termination.

Long-Distance Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution over 202.81 km of Fiber

Quantum key distribution provides secure keys resistant to code-breaking quantum computers. The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution offers the advantages of higher secret key rates in metropolitan areas, as well as the use of standard telecom components that can operate at room temperature. However, the transmission distance of these systems (compared with discrete-variable systems) are currently limited and considered unsuitable for long-distance distribution. Herein, we report the experimental results of long distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 202.81 km of ultralow-loss optical fiber by suitably controlling the excess noise and employing highly efficient reconciliation procedures. This record-breaking implementation of the continuous-variable quantum key distribution doubles the previous distance record and shows the road for long-distance and large-scale secure quantum key distribution using room-temperature standard telecom components.

Practical security analysis of a continuous-variable quantum random number generator with a noisy local oscillator

A quantum random-number generator (QRNG) can theoretically generate unpredictable random numbers with perfect devices and is an ideal and secure source of random numbers for cryptography. However, the practical implementations always contain imperfections, which will greatly influence the randomness of the final output and even open loopholes to eavesdroppers. Recently, Thewes et al. experimentally demonstrated a continuous-variable eavesdropping attack, based on heterodyne detection, on a trusted continuous-variable QRNG in Phys. Rev. A 100, 052318 (2019), yet like in many other practical continuous-variable QRNG studies, they always supposed the local oscillator was stable and ignored its fluctuation which might lead to security threats such as wavelength attack. In this work, based on the theory of the conditional min-entropy, imperfections of the practical security of continuous-variable QRNGs are systematically analyzed, especially the local oscillator fluctuation under imbalanced homodyne detection. Experiments of a practical QRNG based on vacuum fluctuation are demonstrated to show the influence of local oscillator fluctuation on the total measurement noise variances and the practical conditional min-entropy with beam splitters of different transmittances. Moreover, a local oscillator monitoring method is proposed for the practical continuous-variable QRNG, which can be used to calibrate the practical conditional min-entropy.

Non-Gaussian postselection and virtual photon subtraction in continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Photon subtraction can enhance the performance of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD). However, the enhancement effect will be reduced by the imperfections of practical devices, especially the limited efficiency of a single-photon detector. In this paper, we propose a non-Gaussian postselection method to emulate the photon substraction used in coherent-state CV QKD protocols. The virtual photon subtraction not only can avoid the complexity and imperfections of a practical photon-subtraction operation, which extends the secure transmission distance as the ideal case does, but also can be adjusted flexibly according to the channel parameters to optimize the performance. Furthermore, our preliminary tests on the information reconciliation suggest that in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, the performance of reconciliating the postselected non-Gaussian data is better than that of the Gaussian data, which implies the feasibility of implementing this method practically.

Improve the Maximum Transmission Distance of Four-State Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution by using a Noiseless Linear Amplifier

A modified four-state CVQKD protocol is proposed to increase the maximum transmission distance and tolerable excess noise in the presence of Gaussian lossy and noisy channel by using a noiseless linear amplifier (NLA). A NLA with amplitude gain g can increase the maximum admission losses by 20log(g) dB.

Improved Four-state Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution with Long Secure Distance

The four-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) protocol has a long practical secure distance \cite{Leverrier_PRL_2009}, while it has the difficulty of parameter estimation. We propose an improved four-state protocol, where the covariance matrix can be estimated from experimental data without using the linear channel assumption, and thus ensuring its unconditional security in the asymptotical limit. Our new scheme keeps the advantages of high reconciliation efficiency and long secure distance of the four-state protocol, and it can be implemented under current technology.

The Security of SARG04 Protocol in Plug and Play Quantum Key Distribution system with an Untrusted Source

The SARG04 protocol is one of the most frequently used protocol in commercial plug-and-play quantum key distribution (QKD) system, where an eavesdropper can completely control or change the photon number statistics of the QKD source. To ensure the security of SARG04 protocol in plug-and-play QKD system with an unknown and untrusted source, the bounds of a few statistical parameters of the source need to be monitored. An active or a passive source monitor schemes are proposed to verify these parameters. Furthermore, the practical issues due to statistical fluctuation and detection noise in the source monitoring process are quantitatively analyzed. Our simulation results show that the passive scheme can be efficiently applied to plug-and-play system with SARG04 protocol.

Passive scheme with a photon-number-resolving detector for monitoring the untrusted source in a plug-and-play quantum-key-distribution system

A passive scheme with a beam splitter and a photon-number-resolving (PNR) detector is proposed to verify the photon statistics of an untrusted source in a plug-and-play quantum-key-distribution system by applying a three-intensity decoy-state protocol. The practical issues due to statistical fluctuation and detection noise are analyzed. The simulation results show that the scheme can work efficiently when the total number of optical pulses sent from Alice to Bob is above 10^8, and the dark count rate of the PNR detector is below 0.5 counts/pulse, which is realizable with current techniques. Furthermore, we propose a practical realization of the PNR detector with a variable optical attenuator combined with a threshold detector.

Passive-scheme analysis for solving untrusted source problem in quantum key distribution

As a practical method, the passive scheme is useful to monitor the photon statistics of an untrusted source in a "Plug & Play" quantum key distribution (QKD) system. In a passive scheme, three kinds of monitor mode can be adopted: average photon number (APN) monitor, photon number analyzer (PNA) and photon number distribution (PND) monitor. In this paper, the security analysis is rigorously given for APN monitor, while for PNA, the analysis including statistical fluctuation and random noise, is addressed with a confidence level. The results show that the PNA can achieve better performance than the APN monitor and can asymptotically approach the theoretical limit of the PND monitor. Also, the passive scheme with the PNA works efficiently when the signal-to-noise ratio ($R^{SN}$) is not too low and so is highly applicable to solve the untrusted source problem in the QKD system.
