Accelerating fronts in semilinear wave equations

We study dynamics of interfaces in solutions of the equation $ε\Box u + \frac 1 εf_ε(u)=0$, for $f_ε$ of the form $f_ε(u) = (u^2-1)(2u- εκ)$, for $κ\in {\mathbb R}$, as well as more general, but qualitatively similar, nonlinearities. We consider equations of this form both in $(1+n)$-dimensional Minkowski space, $n\ge 1$, and on certain more general Lorentzian manifolds, and we prove that for suitable initial data, solutions exhibit interfaces that sweep out timelike hypersurfaces of mean curvature proportional to $κ$. In particular, in 1 dimension these interfaces behave like a relativistic point particle subject to constant acceleration.

A two-gradient approach for phase transitions in thin films

Motivated by solid-solid phase transitions in elastic thin films, we perform a Gamma-convergence analysis for a singularly perturbed energy describing second order phase transitions in a domain of vanishing thickness. Under a two-wells assumption, we derive a sharp interface model with an interfacial energy depending on the asymptotic ratio between the characteristic length scale of the phase transition and the thickness of the film. In each case, the interfacial energy is determined by an explicit optimal profile problem. This asymptotic problem entails a nontrivial dependance on the thickness direction when the phase transition is created at the same rate as the thin film, while it shows a separation of scales if the thin film is created at a faster rate than the phase transition. The last regime, when the phase transition is created at a faster rate than the thin film, is more involved. Depending on growth conditions of the potential and the compatibility of the two phases, we either obtain a sharp interface model with scale separation, or a trivial situation driven by rigidity effects.

Singular Limits for Thin Film Superconductors in Strong Magnetic Fields - Maan Field Model for Thin Films

We consider singular limits of the three-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional for a superconductor with thin-film geometry, in a constant external magnetic field. The superconducting domain has characteristic thickness on the scale $\eps>0$, and we consider the simultaneous limit as the thickness $\eps\rightarrow 0$ and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ\rightarrow\infty$. We assume that the applied field is strong (on the order of $\eps^{-1}$ in magnitude) in its components tangential to the film domain, and of order $\logκ$ in its dependence on $κ$. We prove that the Ginzburg-Landau energy $Γ$-converges to an energy associated with a two-obstacle problem, posed on the planar domain which supports the thin film. The same limit is obtained regardless of the relationship between $\eps$ and $κ$ in the limit. Two illustrative examples are presented, each of which demonstrating how the curvature of the film can induce the presence of both (positively oriented) vortices and (negatively oriented) antivortices coexisting in a global minimizer of the energy.
