Ultrasonic wave transport in concentrated disordered resonant emulsions

We show how resonant (near-field) coupling affects wave transport in disordered media through ultrasonic experiments in concentrated suspensions. The samples consist of resonant emulsions in which oil droplets are suspended in a liquid gel. By varying the droplet concentration, the limits of the Independent Scattering Approximation are experimentally demonstrated. For the most concentrated samples, the proximity of resonant scatterers induces a renormalization of the surrounding medium, leading to a reducing of scattering strength. We point out an optimal volume fraction of oil droplets for which non-diffusive wave transport is experimentally demonstrated. Our demonstration of maximum scattering at an intermediate droplet concentration is very relevant for designing materials for the study of wave transport phenomena such as Anderson Localization.

Experimental demonstration of negative refractionwith 3D locally resonant acoustic metafluids

Negative refraction of acoustic waves is demonstrated through underwater experiments conducted at ultrasonic frequencies on a 3D locally resonant acoustic metafluid made of soft porous silicone-rubber micro-beads suspended in a yield-stress fluid. By measuring the refracted angle of the acoustic beam transmitted through this metafluid shaped as a prism, we determine the acoustic index to water according to Snell's law. These experimental data are then compared with an excellent agreement to calculations performed in the framework of Multiple Scattering Theory showing that the emergence of negative refraction depends on the volume fraction $Φ$ of the resonant micro-beads. For diluted metafluid ($Φ=3\%$), only positive refraction occurs whereas negative refraction is demonstrated over a broad frequency band with concentrated metafluid ($Φ=17\%$).

Localized modes on a metasurface through multi-wave interactions

In this paper, we describe the manifestation of localized states through coherent and incoherent analyses of a diffuse elastic wavefield inside a two-dimensional metamaterial made of a collection of vertical long beams glued to a thin plate. We demonstrate that localized states arise due to multi-wave interactions at the beam-plate attachment when the beams acts as coupled resonators for both compressional and flexural resonances on the metasurface. Due to the low-quality factor compressional resonance of the beams, inside the main bandgap the modal density of the systel drops to near a high-quality factor flexural resonance of the beams, and blocks the diffusion process of the wavefield intensity. This experiment physically highlights the tight-binding-like coupling in the localized regime for this two-dimensional metamaterial.
