Topology of a class of p2p2-crystallographic replication tiles

We study the topological properties of a class of planar crystallographic replication tiles. Let M∈Z2×2M\in\mathbb{Z}^{2\times2} be an expanding matrix with characteristic polynomial x2+Ax+Bx^2+Ax+B (A,B∈ZA,B\in\mathbb{Z}, B≥2B\geq 2) and v∈Z2{\bf v}\in\mathbb{Z}^2 such that (v,Mv)({\bf v},M{\bf v}) are linearly independent. Then the equation MT+B−12v=T∪(T+v)∪(T+2v)∪⋯∪(T+(B−2)v)∪(−T)MT+\frac{B-1}{2}{\bf v} =T\cup(T+{\bf v})\cup (T+2{\bf v})\cup \cdots\cup(T+(B-2){\bf v})\cup(-T) defines a unique nonempty compact set TT satisfying To‾=T\overline{T^o}=T. Moreover, TT tiles the plane by the crystallographic group p2p2 generated by the ππ-rotation and the translations by integer vectors. It was proved by Leung and Lau in the context of self-affine lattice tiles with collinear digit set that T∪(−T)T\cup (-T) is homeomorphic to a closed disk if and only if 2∣A∣<B+32|A|<B+3. However, this characterization does not hold anymore for TT itself. In this paper, we completely characterize the tiles TT of this class that are homeomorphic to a closed disk.

A numerical scale for non locally connected planar continua

We introduce a numerical scale to quantify to which extent a planar continuum is not locally connected. For a locally connected continuum, the numerical scale is zero; for a continuum like the topologist's sine curve, the scale is one; for an indecomposable continuum, it is infinite. Among others, we shall pose a new problem that may be of some interest: can we estimate the scale from above for the Mandelbrot set M\mathcal{M} ?

On cut sets of attractors of iterated function systems

In this paper, we study cut sets of attractors of iteration function systems (IFS) in Rd\mathbb{R}^d. Under natural conditions, we show that all irreducible cut sets of these attractors are perfect sets or single points. This leads to a criterion for the existence of cut points of IFS attractors. If the IFS attractors are self-affine tiles, our results become algorithmically checkable and can be used to exhibit cut points with the help of Hata graphs. This enables us to construct cut points of some self-affine tiles studied in the literature.

Topological properties of a class of cubic Rauzy fractals

We consider the substitution σa,bσ_{a,b} defined by σa,b:1↦1…1⏟a22↦1…1⏟b33↦1\begin{array}{rlcl} σ_{a,b}: & 1 & \mapsto & \underbrace{1\ldots 1}_{a}2 \\ & 2 & \mapsto & \underbrace{1\ldots 1}_{b}3 \\ & 3 & \mapsto & 1 \end{array} with a≥b≥1a\geq b\geq 1. The shift dynamical system induced by σa,bσ_{a,b} is measure theoretically isomorphic to an exchange of three domains on a compact tile Ta,b\mathcal{T}_{a,b} with fractal boundary. We prove that Ta,b\mathcal{T}_{a,b} is homeomorphic to the closed disk iff 2b−a≤32b-a\leq 3. This solves a conjecture of Shigeki Akiyama posed in 1997. To this effect, we construct a Hölder continuous parametrization Ca,b:S1→∂Ta,bC_{a,b}:\mathbb{S}^1\to\partial \mathcal{T}_{a,b} of the boundary of Ta,b\mathcal{T}_{a,b}. As a by-product, this parametrization gives rise to an increasing sequence of polygonal approximations of ∂Ta,b\partial \mathcal{T}_{a,b}, whose vertices lye on ∂Ta,b\partial \mathcal{T}_{a,b} and have algebraic pre-images in the parametrization.
