Extendability of $1$-decomposable complexes

A well-known conjecture of Simon (1994) states that any pure $d$-dimensional shellable complex on $n$ vertices can be extended to $Δ_{n-1}^{(d)}$, the $d$-skeleton of the $(n-1)$-dimensional simplex, by attaching one facet at a time while maintaining shellability. The notion of $k$-decomposability for simplicial complexes, which generalizes shellability, was introduced by Provan and Billera (1980). Coleman, Dochtermann, Geist, and Oh (2022) showed that any pure $d$-dimensional $0$-decomposable complex on $n$ vertices can similarly be extended to $Δ_{n-1}^{(d)}$, attaching one facet at a time while preserving $0$-decomposability. In this paper, we investigate the analogous question for $1$-decomposable complexes. We prove a slightly relaxed version: any pure $d$-dimensional $1$-decomposable complex on $n$ vertices can be extended to $Δ_{n + d - 3}^{(d)}$, attaching one facet at a time while maintaining $1$-decomposability.

The CLASS 150/220 GHz Polarimeter Array: Design, Assembly, and Characterization

We report on the development of a polarization-sensitive dichroic (150/220 GHz) detector array for the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) delivered to the telescope site in June 2019. In concert with existing 40 and 90 GHz telescopes, the 150/220 GHz telescope will make observations of the cosmic microwave background over large angular scales aimed at measuring the primordial B-mode signal, the optical depth to reionization, and other fundamental physics and cosmology. The 150/220 GHz focal plane array consists of three detector modules with 1020 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers in total. Each dual-polarization pixel on the focal plane contains four bolometers to measure the two linear polarization states at 150 and 220 GHz. Light is coupled through a planar orthomode transducer (OMT) fed by a smooth-walled feedhorn array made from an aluminum-silicon alloy (CE7). In this work, we discuss the design, assembly, and in-lab characterization of the 150/220 GHz detector array. The detectors are photon-noise limited, and we estimate the total array noise-equivalent power (NEP) to be 2.5 and 4 aW$\sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$ for 150 and 220 GHz arrays, respectively.

On Lattices and the Dualities of Information Measures

Measures of dependence among variables, and measures of information content and shared information have become valuable tools of multi-variable data analysis. Information measures, like marginal entropies, mutual and multi-information, have a number of significant advantages over more standard statistical methods, like their reduced sensitivity to sampling limitations than statistical estimates of probability densities. There are also interesting applications of these measures to the theory of complexity and to statistical mechanics. Their mathematical properties and relationships are therefore of interest at several levels. Of the interesting relationships between common information measures, perhaps none are more intriguing and as elegant as the duality relationships based on Mobius inversions. These inversions are directly related to the lattices (posets) that describe these sets of variables and their multi-variable measures. In this paper we describe extensions of the duality previously noted by Bell to a range of measures, and show how the structure of the lattice determines fundamental relationships of these functions. Our major result is a set of interlinked duality relations among marginal entropies, interaction information, and conditional interaction information. The implications of these results include a flexible range of alternative formulations of information-based measures, and a new set of sum rules that arise from path-independent sums on the lattice. Our motivation is to advance the fundamental integration of this set of ideas and relations, and to show explicitly the ways in which all these measures are interrelated through lattice properties. These ideas can be useful in constructing theories of complexity, descriptions of large scale stochastic processes and systems, and in devising algorithms and approximations for computations in multi-variable data analysis.
