A diffusive Fisher-KPP equation with free boundaries and time-periodic advections

We consider a reaction-diffusion-advection equation of the form: ut=uxx−β(t)ux+f(t,u)u_t=u_{xx}-β(t)u_x+f(t,u) for x∈(g(t),h(t))x\in (g(t),h(t)), where β(t)β(t) is a TT-periodic function representing the intensity of the advection, f(t,u)f(t,u) is a Fisher-KPP type of nonlinearity, TT-periodic in tt, g(t)g(t) and h(t)h(t) are two free boundaries satisfying Stefan conditions. This equation can be used to describe the population dynamics in time-periodic environment with advection. Its homogeneous version (that is, both ββ and ff are independent of tt) was recently studied by Gu, Lou and Zhou \cite{GLZ}. In this paper we consider the time-periodic case and study the long time behavior of the solutions. We show that a vanishing-spreading dichotomy result holds when ββ is small; a vanishing-transition-virtual spreading trichotomy result holds when ββ is a medium-sized function; all solutions vanish when ββ is large. Here the partition of β(t)β(t) is much more complicated than the case when ββ is a real number, since it depends not only on the "size" βˉ:=1T∫0Tβ(t)dt\barβ:= \frac{1}{T}\int_0^T β(t) dt of β(t)β(t) but also on its "shape" β~(t):=β(t)−βˉ\tildeβ(t) := β(t) - \barβ.

Long time behavior of solutions of Fisher-KPP equation with advection and free boundaries

We consider Fisher-KPP equation with advection: ut=uxx−βux+f(u)u_t=u_{xx}-βu_x+f(u) for x∈(g(t),h(t))x\in (g(t),h(t)), where g(t)g(t) and h(t)h(t) are two free boundaries satisfying Stefan conditions. This equation is used to describe the population dynamics in advective environments. We study the influence of the advection coefficient −β-β on the long time behavior of the solutions. We find two parameters c0c_0 and β∗β^* with β∗>c0>0β^*>c_0>0 which play key roles in the dynamics, here c0c_0 is the minimal speed of the traveling waves of Fisher-KPP equation. More precisely, by studying a family of the initial data {σϕ}σ>0\{ σϕ\}_{σ>0} (where ϕϕ is some compactly supported positive function), we show that, (1) in case β∈(0,c0)β\in (0,c_0), there exists σ∗⩾0σ^*\geqslant0 such that spreading happens when σ>σ∗σ> σ^* and vanishing happens when σ∈(0,σ∗]σ\in (0,σ^*]; (2) in case β∈(c0,β∗)β\in (c_0,β^*), there exists σ∗>0σ^*>0 such that virtual spreading happens when σ>σ∗σ>σ^* (i.e., u(t,⋅;σϕ)→0u(t,\cdot;σϕ)\to 0 locally uniformly in [g(t),∞)[g(t),\infty) and u(t,⋅+ct;σϕ)→1u(t,\cdot + ct;σϕ)\to 1 locally uniformly in R\R for some c>β−c0c>β-c_0), vanishing happens when σ∈(0,σ∗)σ\in (0,σ^*), and in the transition case σ=σ∗σ=σ^*, u(t,⋅+o(t);σϕ)→V∗(⋅−(β−c0)t)u(t, \cdot+o(t);σϕ)\to V^*(\cdot-(β-c_0)t ) uniformly, the latter is a traveling wave with a "big head" near the free boundary x=(β−c0)tx=(β-c_0)t and with an infinite long "tail" on the left; (3) in case β=c0β= c_0, there exists σ∗>0σ^*>0 such that virtual spreading happens when σ>σ∗σ> σ^* and u(t,⋅;σϕ)→0u(t,\cdot;σϕ)\to 0 uniformly in [g(t),h(t)][g(t),h(t)] when σ∈(0,σ∗]σ\in (0,σ^*]; (4) in case β⩾β∗β\geqslant β^*, vanishing happens for any solution.

Nonlinear diffusion problems with free boundaries: Convergence, transition speed and zero number arguments,

This paper continues the investigation of Du and Lou (J. European Math Soc, to appear), where the long-time behavior of positive solutions to a nonlinear diffusion equation of the form ut=uxx+f(u)u_t=u_{xx}+f(u) for xx over a varying interval (g(t),h(t))(g(t), h(t)) was examined. Here x=g(t)x=g(t) and x=h(t)x=h(t) are free boundaries evolving according to g′(t)=−μux(t,g(t))g'(t)=-μu_x(t, g(t)), h′(t)=−μux(t,h(t))h'(t)=-μu_x(t,h(t)), and u(t,g(t))=u(t,h(t))=0u(t, g(t))=u(t,h(t))=0. We answer several intriguing questions left open in the paper of Du and Lou.First we prove the conjectured convergence result in the paper of Du and Lou for the general case that ff is C1C^1 and f(0)=0f(0)=0. Second, for bistable and combustion types of ff, we determine the asymptotic propagation speed of h(t)h(t) and g(t)g(t) in the transition case. More presicely, we show that when the transition case happens, for bistable type of ff there exists a uniquely determined c1>0c_1>0 such that lim⁡t→∞h(t)/ln⁡t=lim⁡t→∞−g(t)/ln⁡t=c1\lim_{t\to\infty} h(t)/\ln t=\lim_{t\to\infty} -g(t)/\ln t=c_1, and for combustion type of ff, there exists a uniquely determined c2>0c_2>0 such that lim⁡t→∞h(t)/t=lim⁡t→∞−g(t)/t=c2\lim_{t\to\infty} h(t)/\sqrt t=\lim_{t\to\infty} -g(t)/\sqrt t=c_2. Our approach is based on the zero number arguments of Matano and Angenent, and on the construction of delicate upper and lower solutions.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions of a reaction diffusion equation with free boundary conditions

We study a nonlinear diffusion equation of the form ut=uxx+f(u) (x∈[g(t),h(t)])u_t=u_{xx}+f(u)\ (x\in [g(t),h(t)]) with free boundary conditions g′(t)=−ux(t,g(t))+αg'(t)=-u_x(t,g(t))+α and h′(t)=−ux(t,g(t))−αh'(t)=-u_x(t,g(t))-α for some α>0α>0. Such problems may be used to describe the spreading of a biological or chemical species, with the free boundaries representing the expanding fronts. When α=0α=0, the problem was recently investigated by \cite{DuLin, DuLou}. In this paper we consider the case α>0α>0. In this case shrinking (i.e. h(t)−g(t)→0h(t)-g(t)\to 0) may happen, which is quite different from the case α=0α=0. Moreover, we show that, under certain conditions on ff, shrinking is equivalent to vanishing (i.e. u→0u\to 0), both of them happen as tt tends to some finite time. On the other hand, every bounded and positive time-global solution converges to a nonzero stationary solution as t→∞t\to \infty. As applications, we consider monostable and bistable types of nonlinearities, and obtain a complete description on the asymptotic behavior of the solutions.

Long time behavior of solutions of a reaction-diffusion equation on unbounded intervals with Robin boundary conditions

We study the long time behavior, as t→∞t\to\infty, of solutions of {ut=uxx+f(u),x>0, t>0,u(0,t)=bux(0,t),t>0,u(x,0)=u0(x)⩾0,x⩾0, \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} u_t = u_{xx} + f(u), & x>0, \ t >0,\\ u(0,t) = b u_x(0,t), & t>0,\\ u(x,0) = u_0 (x)\geqslant 0 , & x\geqslant 0, \end{array} \right. where b⩾0b\geqslant 0 and ff is an unbalanced bistable nonlinearity. By investigating families of initial data of the type {σϕ}σ>0\{ σϕ\}_{σ>0}, where ϕϕ belongs to an appropriate class of nonnegative compactly supported functions, we exhibit the sharp threshold between vanishing and spreading. More specifically, there exists some value σ∗σ^* such that the solution converges uniformly to 0 for any 0<σ<σ∗0 < σ< σ^*, and locally uniformly to a positive stationary state for any σ>σ∗ σ> σ^*. In the threshold case σ=σ∗σ= σ^*, the profile of the solution approaches the symmetrically decreasing ground state with some shift, which may be either finite or infinite. In the latter case, the shift evolves as Cln⁡tC \ln t where~CC is a positive constant we compute explicitly, so that the solution is traveling with a pulse-like shape albeit with an asymptotically zero speed. Depending on bb, but also in some cases on the choice of the initial datum, we prove that one or both of the situations may happen.

Selfsimilar solutions in a sector for a quasilinear parabolic equation

We study a two-point free boundary problem in a sector for a quasilinear parabolic equation. The boundary conditions are assumed to be spatially and temporally "self-similar" in a special way. We prove the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic stability of an expanding solution which is self-similar at discrete times. We also study the existence and uniqueness of a shrinking solution which is self-similar at discrete times.

Different Asymptotic Spreading Speeds Induced by Advection in a Diffusion Problem with Free Boundaries

In this paper, we consider a Fisher-KPP equation with an advection term and two free boundaries, which models the behavior of an invasive species in one dimension space. When spreading happens (that is, the solution converges to a positive constant), we use phase plane analysis and upper/lower solutions to prove that the rightward and leftward asymptotic spreading speeds exist, both are positive constants. Moreover, one of them is bigger and the other is smaller than the spreading speed in the corresponding problem without advection term.

Spreading and vanishing in nonlinear diffusion problems with free boundaries

We study nonlinear diffusion problems of the form ut=uxx+f(u)u_t=u_{xx}+f(u) with free boundaries. Such problems may be used to describe the spreading of a biological or chemical species, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. For special f(u)f(u) of the Fisher-KPP type, the problem was investigated by Du and Lin [8]. Here we consider much more general nonlinear terms. For any f(u)f(u) which is C1C^1 and satisfies f(0)=0f(0)=0, we show that the omega limit set ω(u)ω(u) of every bounded positive solution is determined by a stationary solution. For monostable, bistable and combustion types of nonlinearities, we obtain a rather complete description of the long-time dynamical behavior of the problem; moreover, by introducing a parameter σσ in the initial data, we reveal a threshold value σ∗σ^* such that spreading (lim⁡t→∞u=1\lim_{t\to\infty}u= 1) happens when σ>σ∗σ>σ^*, vanishing (lim⁡t→∞u=0\lim_{t\to\infty}u=0) happens when σ<σ∗σ<σ^*, and at the threshold value σ∗σ^*, ω(u)ω(u) is different for the three different types of nonlinearities. When spreading happens, we make use of "semi-waves" to determine the asymptotic spreading speed of the front.

Traveling Wave Solutions of Competitive Models with Free Boundaries

We study two systems of reaction diffusion equations with monostable or bistable type of nonlinearity and with free boundaries. These systems are used as multi-species competitive model. For two-species models, we prove the existence of a traveling wave solution which consists of two semi-waves intersecting at the free boundary. For three-species models, we also prove the existence of a traveling wave solution which, however, consists of two semi-waves and one compactly supported wave in between, each intersecting with its neighbor at the free boundary.
