Light Rings around Five Dimensional Stationary Black Holes and Naked Singularities

The existence of light rings in a spacetime is closely related to the existence of black hole horizons and observables such as the ringdown and the shadow. Black holes, compared to nonvacuum ultracompact objects, have rather unique environments. To this aim, recently [P.V.P. Cunha and C.A.R. Herdeiro, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{124}, 181101 (2020)] topological arguments, independent of the underlying gravity theory, were developed to prove the existence of unstable light rings outside the Killing horizon of {\it four} dimensional asymptotically flat, stationary, axisymmetric, nonextremal black holes. Here we extend these arguments to five-dimensional stationary black holes. Generically in five dimensions, there are two possible conserved angular momenta, hence the four-dimensional discussion does not extend verbatim to five dimensions; nevertheless, we prove that there is a light ring for each rotation sense for a stationary black hole. We give the static and the Myers-Perry rotating black holes as examples. We also show that when the horizon of the black hole disappears and the singularity becomes naked, only one of the light rings survives; a similar phenomenon also occurs in four dimensions which might allow testing the cosmic censorship hypothesis.

Anomalous Dispersion in Gravity Theories

A wave pulse (be it a gravitational wave or a light wave) undergoes anomalous dispersion in a vacuum in flat spacetimes with an even number of spatial dimensions even if all the frequencies move at the same speed. Such an anomalous dispersion does not occur in spacetimes with an odd number of spatial dimensions. We study various gravity theories and show that dispersion-free propagation is possible in even number of spatial dimensions if the background is not the Minkowski but the de Sitter spacetime and the gravity theory is massive gravity with a tuned mass in terms of the cosmological constant. Mass and the cosmological constant conspire to get rid of the anomalous dispersion and restore Huygens' principle.

Basics of Apparent Horizons in Black Hole Physics

Event Horizon, a null hypersurface defining the boundary of the black hole region of a spacetime, is not particularly useful for evolving black holes since it is non-local in time. Instead, one uses the more tangible concept of Apparent Horizon for dynamical black holes out there in the sky that do all sorts of things: evolve, merge and feed on the environment. Event Horizon, being a gauge-independent, global property of the total spacetime is easy to define and locate in the stationary case; on the other hand, Apparent Horizon depends on the embedding of the surface in spacetime and hence it is somewhat tricky to define. But for numerical simulations in General Relativity, locating the Apparent Horizon helps one to excise the black hole region and the singularity to have a stable computation. Moreover, for stationary solutions the two horizons match. Here we give a detailed pedagogical exposition of the subject and work out the non-trivial case of a slowly moving and spinning black hole.

First law of black hole thermodynamics and Smarr formula with a cosmological constant

The first law of black hole thermodynamics in the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$ can be generalized by introducing a term containing the variation $δΛ$. Similar to other terms in the first law, which are variations of some conserved charges like mass, entropy, angular momentum, electric charge etc., it has been shown [Classical Quantum Gravity 35, 125012 (2018)] that the new term has the same structure: $Λ$ is a conserved charge associated with a gauge symmetry; and its role in the first law is quite similar to an ``electric charge" rather than to the pressure. Besides, its conjugate chemical potential resembles an ``electric potential" on the horizon, in contrast with the volume enclosed by horizon. In this work, first we propose and prove the generalized Smarr relation in this new paradigm. Then, we reproduce systematically the ``effective volume" of a black hole which has been introduced before in the literature as the conjugate of pressure. Our construction removes the ambiguity in the definition of volume. Finally, we apply and investigate this formulation of ``$Λ$ as a charge" on a number of solutions to different models of gravity for different spacetime dimensions. Especially, we investigate the applicability and validity of the analysis for black branes, whose enclosed volume is not well defined in principle.

Spherical timelike orbits around Kerr black holes

We study the order ten polynomial equation satisfied by the radius of the spherical timelike orbits for a massive particle with a generic energy around a Kerr black hole. Even though the radii of the prograde and retrograde orbits at the equatorial or polar plane for particles with zero or unit energy have a monotonic dependence on the rotation parameter of the black hole, we show that there is a critical inclination angle above which the retrograde orbits have a nonmonotonic dependency on the rotation of the black hole. Thus the capture cross-section of these retrograde orbits decrease with increasing black hole spin. Hence their efficiency to reduce the black hole's spin is decreased. We also provide an equation for the critical inclination angle that shows exactly at which point the nonmonotonicity starts. In addition, we employ the Lagrange-Bürmann method to find approximate analytic solutions from the known exact solutions.

Event Horizon Detecting Invariants

Some judiciously chosen local curvature scalars can be used to invariantly characterize event horizons of black holes in $D > 3$ dimensions, but they fail for the three dimensional Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole since all curvature invariants are constant. Here we provide an invariant characterization of the event horizon of the BTZ black hole using the curvature invariants of codimension one hypersurfaces instead of the full spacetime. Our method is also applicable to black holes in generic dimensions but is most efficient in three, four, and five dimensions. We give four dimensional Kerr, five dimensional Myers-Perry and three dimensional warped-anti-de Sitter, and the three dimensional asymptotically flat black holes as examples.

Non-stationary Energy in General Relativity

Using the time evolution equations of (cosmological) General Relativity in the first order Fischer-Marsden form, we construct an integral that measures the amount of non-stationary energy on a given spacelike hypersurface in $D$ dimensions. The integral vanishes for stationary spacetimes; and with a further assumption, reduces to Dain's invariant on the boundary of the hypersurface which is defined with the Einstein constraints and a fourth order equation defining approximate Killing symmetries.

Asymptotically flat black holes in 2+1 dimensions

Asymptotically flat black holes in $2+1$ dimensions are a rarity. We study the recently found black flower solutions (asymptotically flat black holes with deformed horizons), static black holes, rotating black holes and the dynamical black flowers (black holes with radiative gravitons ) of the purely quadratic version of new massive gravity. We show how they appear in this theory and we also show that they are also solutions to the infinite order extended version of the new massive gravity, that is the Born-Infeld extension of new massive gravity with an amputated Einsteinian piece. The same metrics also solve the topologically extended versions of these theories, with modified conserved charges and the thermodynamical quantities, such as the Wald entropy. Besides these we find new conformally flat radiating type solutions to these extended gravity models. We also show that these metrics do not arise in Einstein's gravity coupled to physical perfect fluids.

From Smooth Curves to Universal Metrics

A special class of metrics, called universal metrics, solve all gravity theories defined by covariant field equations purely based on the metric tensor. Since we currently lack the knowledge of what the full of quantum-corrected field equations of gravity are at a given microscopic length scale, these metrics are particularly important in understanding quantum fields in curved backgrounds in a consistent way. But, finding explicit universal metrics has been a hard problem as there does not seem to be a procedure for it. In this work, we overcome this difficulty and give a construction of universal metrics of d-dimensional spacetime from curves constrained to live in a (d-1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime or a Euclidean space.

Gravitomagnetism in Massive Gravity

Massive gravity in the weak field limit is described by the Fierz-Pauli theory with 5 degrees of freedom in four dimensions. In this theory, we calculate the gravitomagnetic effects (potential energy) between two point-like, spinning sources that also orbit around each other in the limit where the spins and the velocities are small. Spin-spin, spin-orbit and orbit-orbit interactions in massive gravity theory have rather remarkable, discrete differences from their counterparts in General Relativity. Our computation is applicable for large distances, for example, for interaction between galaxies or galaxy clusters where massive gravity is expected to play a role. We also extend the computations to quadratic gravity theories in four dimensions and find the lowest order gravitomagnetic effects and show that at small separations quadratic gravity behaves differently than General Relativity.

Holographically Viable Extensions of Topologically Massive and Minimal Massive Gravity?

Recently, an extension of the topologically massive gravity (TMG) in $2+1$ dimensions, dubbed as minimal massive gravity (MMG), was found which is free of the bulk-boundary unitarity clash that inflicts the former theory and all the other known three dimensional theories. Field equations of MMG differ from those of TMG at quadratic terms in the curvature that do not come from the variation of an action depending on the metric alone. Here we show that MMG is a unique theory and there does not exist a deformation of TMG or MMG at the cubic and quartic order (and beyond) in the curvature that is consistent at the level of the field equations. The only extension of TMG with the desired bulk and boundary properties having a single massive degree of freedom is MMG.

Inflation in pure gravity with only massless spin-2 fields

We show that without introducing additional fields or extra degrees of freedom, a specific higher derivative extension of Einstein's gravity that has only a massless spin-2 excitation in its perturbative spectrum, has an inflationary period, a quasi-de Sitter phase with enough number of e-foldings required to solve the horizon and related problems. The crucial ingredient in the construction is the curvature dependence of the effective Newton's constant.

Minimal Extension of Einstein's Theory: The Quartic Gravity

We study structure of solutions of the recently constructed minimal extensions of Einstein's gravity in four dimensions at the quartic curvature level. The extended higher derivative theory, just like Einstein's gravity, has only a massless spin-two graviton about its unique maximally symmetric vacuum. The extended theory does not admit the Schwarzschild or Kerr metrics as exact solutions, hence there is no issue of Schwarzschild type singularity but, approximately, outside a source, spherically symmetric metric with the correct Newtonian limit is recovered. We also show that for all Einstein space-times, square of the Riemann tensor (the Kretschmann scalar or the Gauss-Bonnet invariant) obeys a non-linear scalar Klein-Gordon equation.

Stern-Gerlach Experiment with Higher Spins

We analyze idealized sequential Stern-Gerlach experiments with higher spin particles. This analysis serves at least two purposes: The widely discussed spin-1/2 case leads to some misunderstandings which hopefully is removed by the higher spin discussion. Secondly, Wigner rotation matrices for generic spins become conceptually more transparent with this physical example. We also give compact formulas for the probabilities in terms of the angle between the sequential SG apparatuses for generic spins. We work out the spin-$1/2$, spin-$1$ and spin-$2$ cases explicitly. Since there are some confusing issues regarding the actual experiment, we also compile a "facts and fiction" section on the SG experiments.

Born-Infeld Gravity with a Unique Vacuum and a Massless Graviton

We construct an n-dimensional Born-Infeld type gravity theory that has the same properties as Einstein's gravity in terms of the vacuum and particle content: Namely, the theory has a unique viable vacuum (maximally symmetric solution) and a single massless unitary spin-2 graviton about this vacuum. The BI gravity, in some sense, is the most natural, minimal generalization of Einstein's gravity with a better UV behavior, and hence, is a potentially viable proposal for low energy quantum gravity. The Gauss-Bonnet combination plays a non-trivial role in the construction of the theory. As an extreme example, we consider the infinite dimensional limit where an interesting exponential gravity arises.

Bulk and Boundary Unitary Gravity in 3D: MMG$_2$

We construct a massive spin-2 theory in 2+1 dimensions that is immune to the bulk-boundary unitarity conflict in anti-de Sitter space and hence amenable to holography. The theory is an extension of Topologically Massive Gravity, just like the recently found Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG), but it has two massive helicity modes instead of a single one. The theory admits all the solutions of TMG with a redefined topological parameter. We calculate the Shapiro time-delay and show that flat-space (local) causality is not violated. We show that there is an interesting relation between the theory we present here (which we call MMG$_2$), MMG and the earlier New Massive Gravity (NMG): Namely, field equations of these theories are non-trivially related. We study the bulk excitations and boundary charges of the conformal field theory that could be dual to gravity. We also find the chiral gravity limit for which one of the massive modes becomes massless. The virtue of the model is that one does not have to go to the chiral limit to achieve unitarity in the bulk and on the boundary and the log-terms that appear in the chiral limit and cause instability do not exist in the generic theory.

More on Cotton Flow

Cotton flow tends to evolve a given initial metric on a three manifold to a conformally flat one. Here we expound upon the earlier work on Cotton flow and study the linearized version of it around a generic initial metric by employing a modified form of the DeTurck trick. We show that the flow around the flat space, as a critical point, reduces to an anisotropic generalization of linearized KdV equation with complex dispersion relations one of which is an unstable mode, rendering the flat space unstable under small perturbations. We also show that Einstein spaces and some conformally flat non-Einstein spaces are linearly unstable. We refine the gradient flow formalism and compute the second variation of the entropy and show that generic critical points are extended Cotton solitons. We study some properties of these solutions and find a Topologically Massive soliton that is built from Cotton and Ricci solitons. In the Lorentzian signature, we also show that the pp-wave metrics are both Cotton and Ricci solitons.

On Exact Solutions and the Consistency of 3D Minimal Massive Gravity

We show that all algebraic Type-O, Type-N and Type-D and some Kundt-Type solutions of Topologically Massive Gravity are inherited by its holographically well-defined deformation, that is the recently found Minimal Massive Gravity. This construction provides a large class of constant scalar curvature solutions to the theory. We also study the consistency of the field equations both in the source-free and matter-coupled cases. Since the field equations of MMG do not come from a Lagrangian that depends on the metric and its derivatives only, it lacks the Bianchi identity valid for all non-singular metrics. But it turns out that for the solutions of the equations, Bianchi identity is satisfied. This is a necessary condition for the consistency of the classical field equations but not a sufficient one, since the the rank-two tensor equations are susceptible to double-divergence. We show that for the source-free case the double-divergence of the field equations vanish for the solutions. In the matter-coupled case, we show that the double-divergence of the left-hand side and the right-hand side are equal to each other for the solutions of the theory. This construction completes the proof of the the consistency of the field equations.

AdS-plane wave and pp-wave solutions of generic gravity theories

We construct the AdS-plane wave solutions of generic gravity theory built on the arbitrary powers of the Riemann tensor and its derivatives in analogy with the pp-wave solutions. In constructing the wave solutions of the generic theory, we show that the most general two tensor built from the Riemann tensor and its derivatives can be written in terms of the traceless-Ricci tensor. Quadratic gravity theory plays a major role; therefore, we revisit the wave solutions in this theory. As examples to our general formalism, we work out the six-dimensional conformal gravity and its nonconformal deformation as well as the tricritical gravity, the Lanczos-Lovelock theory, and string-generated cubic curvature theory.

Born-Infeld Gravity with a Massless Graviton in Four Dimensions

We construct Born-Infeld (BI) type gravity theories which describe tree-level unitary (non-ghost and non-tachyonic) massless spin-2 modes around their maximally symmetric vacua in four dimensions. Building unitary BI actions around flat vacuum is straightforward; but, this is a complicated task around (anti)-de Sitter backgrounds. In this work, we solve the issue and give details of constructing perturbatively viable determinantal BI theories. It is interesting that the Gauss-Bonnet combination, which is a total derivative in four dimensions, plays an important role in the construction of viable BI theories.

Minimal Massive Gravity: Conserved Charges, Excitations and the Chiral Gravity Limit

We find the excitations and construct the conserved charges ( mass and angular momentum) of the recently found Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG) in 2+1 dimensions in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. The field equation of the theory does not come from an action and hence lacks the required Bianchi Identity needed to define conserved charges. But the theory, which also provides a healthy extension of the Topologically Massive Gravity in the bulk and boundary of spacetime, does admit conserved charges for metric that are solutions. Our construction is based on background Killing vectors and imperative to provide physical meaning to the integration constants in the black hole type metrics. We also study the chiral gravity limit of MMG.

Scattering in Topologically Massive Gravity, Chiral Gravity and the corresponding Anyon-Anyon Potential Energy

We compute the tree-level scattering amplitude between two covariantly conserved sources in generic Cosmological Topologically Massive Gravity augmented with a Fierz-Pauli term that has three massive degrees of freedom. We consider the Chiral Gravity limit in the anti-de Sitter space as well as the limit of Flat-Space Chiral Gravity. We show that Chiral Gravity cannot be unitarily deformed with a Fierz-Pauli mass. We calculate the non-relativistic potential energy between two point-like spinning sources. In addition to the expected mass-mass and spin-spin interactions, there are mass-spin interactions due to the presence of the gravitational Chern-Simons term which induces spin for any massive object and turns it to an anyon. We also show that the tree-level scattering is trivial for the Flat-Space Chiral Gravity.

Spin-Spin Interactions in Massive Gravity and Higher Derivative Gravity Theories

We show that, in the weak field limit, at large separations, in sharp contrast to General Relativity (GR), all massive gravity theories predict distance-dependent spin alignments for spinning objects. For all separations GR requires anti-parallel spin orientations with spins pointing along the line joining the sources. Hence total spin is minimized in GR. On the other hand, while massive gravity at small separations ($m_gr \le1.62$) gives the same result as GR, for large separations ($m_gr>1.62$) the spins become parallel to each other and perpendicular to the line joining the objects. Namely, the potential energy is minimized when the total spin is maximized in massive gravity for large separations. We also compute the spin-spin interactions in quadratic gravity theories and find that while at large separations GR result is intact, at small separations, spins become perpendicular to the line joining sources and anti-parallel to each other.

Energy and Angular Momentum in Generic F(Riemann) Theories

We construct the conserved charge of generic gravity theories built on arbitrary contractions of the Riemann tensor (but not on its derivatives) for asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter spacetimes. Our construction is a generalization of the ADT charges of linear and quadratic gravity theories in cosmological backgrounds. As an explicit example we find the energy and angular momentum of the BTZ black hole in the 2+1 dimensional Born-Infeld gravity.

New Exact Solutions of Quadratic Curvature Gravity

It is a known fact that the Kerr-Schild type solutions in general relativity satisfy both exact and linearized Einstein field equations. We show that this property remains valid also for a special class of the Kerr-Schild metrics in arbitrary dimensions in generic quadratic curvature theory. In addition to the AdS-wave (or Siklos) metric which represents plane waves in an AdS background, we present here a new exact solution, in this class, to the quadratic gravity in D-dimensions which represents a spherical wave in an AdS background. The solution is a special case of the Kundt metrics belonging to spacetimes with constant curvature invariants.

Some exact solutions of all f(Ricci) theories in three dimensions

We find constant scalar curvature Type-N and Type-D solutions in all higher curvature gravity theories with actions of the form f(Ricci) that are built on the Ricci tensor, but not on its derivatives. In our construction, these higher derivative theories inherit some of the previously studied solutions of the cosmological topologically massive gravity and the new massive gravity field equations, once the parameters of the theories are adjusted. Besides the generic higher curvature theory, we have considered in some detail the examples of the quadratic curvature theory, the cubic curvature theory, and the Born-Infeld extension of the new massive gravity.

Spectra, vacua and the unitarity of Lovelock gravity in D-dimensional AdS spacetimes

We explicitly confirm the expectation that generic Lovelock gravity in D dimensions has a unitary massless spin-2 excitation around any one of its constant curvature vacua just like the cosmological Einstein gravity. The propagator of the theory reduces to that of Einstein's gravity, but scattering amplitudes must be computed with an effective Newton's constant which we provide. Tree-level unitarity imposes a single constraint on the parameters of the theory yielding a wide range of unitary region. As an example, we explicitly work out the details of the cubic Lovelock theory.

Unitarity of Weyl-Invariant New Massive Gravity and Generation of Graviton Mass via Symmetry Breaking

We give a detailed analysis of the particle spectrum and the perturbative unitarity of the recently introduced Weyl-invariant version of the new massive gravity in 2+1 dimensions. By computing the action up to second order in the fluctuations of the metric, the gauge and the scalar fields around the anti-de Sitter (AdS) and flat vacua, we find that the theory describes unitary (tachyon and ghost-free) massive spin-2, massive (or massless) spin-1 and massless spin-0 excitations for certain ranges of the dimensionless parameters. The theory is not unitary in de Sitter space. Scale invariance is either broken spontaneously (in AdS background) or radiatively (in flat background) and hence the masses of the particles are generated either spontaneously or at the second loop order.

Weyl-gauging of Topologically Massive Gravity

We construct a Weyl-invariant extension of topologically massive gravity which, remarkably, turns out to include topologically massive electrodynamics, with a Proca mass term, conformally coupled to a scalar field. The action has no dimensionful parameters, therefore, the masses are generated via symmetry breaking either radiatively in flat backgrounds or spontaneously in constant curvature backgrounds. The broken phase of the theory, generically, has a single massive spin-2 and a massive spin-1 excitation. Chiral gravity in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes does not arise as a low energy theory, while chiral gravity in de Sitter spacetime is not ruled out.

Weyl-Invariant Higher Curvature Gravity Theories in n Dimensions

We study the particle spectrum and the unitarity of the generic n-dimensional Weyl-invariant quadratic curvature gravity theories around their (anti-)de Sitter [(A)dS] and flat vacua. Weyl symmetry is spontaneously broken in (A)dS and radiatively broken at the loop level in flat space. Save the three dimensional theory (which is the Weyl-invariant extension of the new massive gravity), the graviton remains massless and the unitarity requires that the only viable Weyl-invariant quadratic theory is the Weyl-invariant extension of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. The Weyl gauge field on the other hand becomes massive. Symmetry breaking scale fixes all the dimensionful parameters in the theory.

AdS Waves as Exact Solutions to Quadratic Gravity

We give an exact solution of the quadratic gravity in D dimensions. The solution is a plane fronted wave metric with a cosmological constant. This metric solves not only the full quadratic gravity field equations but also the linearized ones which include the linearized equations of the recently found critical gravity. A subset of the solutions change the asymptotic structure of the anti-de Sitter space due to their logarithmic behavior.

All Bulk and Boundary Unitary Cubic Curvature Theories in Three Dimensions

We construct all the bulk and boundary unitary cubic curvature parity invariant gravity theories in three dimensions in (anti)-de Sitter spaces. For bulk unitarity, our construction is based on the principle that the free theory of the cubic curvature theory reduces to one of the three known unitary theories which are the cosmological Einstein-Hilbert theory, the quadratic theory of the scalar curvature or the new massive gravity (NMG). Bulk and boundary unitarity in NMG is in conflict; therefore, cubic theories that are unitary both in the bulk and on the boundary have free theories that reduce to the other two alternatives. We also study the unitarity of the Born-Infeld extensions of NMG to all orders in curvature.

All unitary cubic curvature gravities in D dimensions

We construct all the unitary cubic curvature gravity theories built on the contractions of the Riemann tensor in D -dimensional (anti)-de Sitter spacetimes. Our construction is based on finding the equivalent quadratic action for the general cubic curvature theory and imposing ghost and tachyon freedom, which greatly simplifies the highly complicated problem of finding the propagator of cubic curvature theories in constant curvature backgrounds. To carry out the procedure we have also classified all the unitary quadratic models. We use our general results to study the recently found cubic curvature theories using different techniques and the string generated cubic curvature gravity model. We also study the scattering in critical gravity and give its cubic curvature extensions.

Critical Points of D-Dimensional Extended Gravities

We study the parameter space of D-dimensional cosmological Einstein gravity together with quadratic curvature terms. In D>4 there are in general two distinct (anti)-de Sitter vacua. We show that for appropriate choice of the parameters there exists a critical point for one of the vacua, for which there are only massless tensor, but neither massive tensor nor scalar, gravitons. At criticality, the linearized excitations have vanishing energy (as do black hole solutions). A further restriction of the parameters gives a one-parameter cosmological Einstein plus Weyl^2 model with a unique vacuum, whose Λis determined.

Higgs Mechanism for New Massive Gravity and Weyl Invariant Extensions of Higher Derivative Theories

New Massive Gravity provides a non-linear extension of the Fierz-Pauli mass for gravitons in 2+1 dimensions. Here we construct a Weyl invariant version of this theory. When the Weyl symmetry is broken, the graviton gets a mass in analogy with the Higgs mechanism. In (anti)-de Sitter backgrounds, the symmetry can be broken spontaneously, but in flat backgrounds radiative corrections, at the two loop level, break the Weyl symmetry a la Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. We also construct the Weyl invariant extensions of some other higher derivative models, such as the Gauss-Bonnet theory (which reduces to the Maxwell theory in three dimensions) and the Born-Infeld type gravities.

c-functions in the Born-Infeld extended New Massive Gravity

We derive and study the equations of motion of the Born-Infeld extension of New Massive Gravity for globally and asymptotically (anti-)de Sitter spaces, and show that the assumptions of the null-energy condition and holography (that bounds the c-function) lead to two simple c-functions one of which is equivalent to the c-function of Einstein's gravity. We also show that, at the fixed point, the c-function gives the central charge of the Virasoro algebra and the coefficient of the Weyl anomaly up to a constant.

Unitarity analysis of general Born-Infeld gravity theories

We develop techniques of analyzing the unitarity of general Born-Infeld (BI) gravity actions in D-dimensional spacetimes. Determinantal form of the action allows us to find a compact expression quadratic in the metric fluctuations around constant curvature backgrounds. This is highly nontrivial since for the BI actions, in principle, infinitely many terms in the curvature expansion should contribute to the quadratic action in the metric fluctuations around constant curvature backgrounds, which would render the unitarity analysis intractable. Moreover in even dimensions, unitarity of the theory depends only on finite number of terms built from the powers of the curvature tensor. We apply our techniques to some four-dimensional examples.

Green's Matrix for a Second Order Self-Adjoint Matrix Differential Operator

A systematic construction of the Green's matrix for a second order, self-adjoint matrix differential operator from the linearly independent solutions of the corresponding homogeneous differential equation set is carried out. We follow the general approach of extracting the Green's matrix from the Green's matrix of the corresponding first order system. This construction is required in the cases where the differential equation set cannot be turned to an algebraic equation set via transform techniques.

Massive Higher Derivative Gravity in D-dimensional Anti-de Sitter Spacetimes

We find the propagator and calculate the tree level scattering amplitude between two covariantly conserved sources in an Anti-de Sitter background for the most general D-dimensional quadratic, four-derivative, gravity with a Pauli-Fierz mass. We also calculate the Newtonian potential for various limits of the theory in flat space. We show how the recently introduced three dimensional New Massive Gravity is uniquely singled out among higher derivative models as a (tree level) unitary model and that its Newtonian limit is equivalent to that of the usual massive gravity in flat space.

Deconfinement at N>2: SU(N) Georgi-Glashow model in 2+1 dimensions

We analyse the deconfining phase transition in the SU(N) Georgi-Glashow model in 2+1 dimensions. We show that the phase transition is second order for any N, and the universality class is different from the Z(N) invariant Villain model. At large N the conformal theory describing the fixed point is a deformed SU(N)_1 WZNW model which has N-1 massless fields. It is therefore likely that its self-dual infrared fixed point is described by the Fateev-Zamolodchikov theory of Z(N) parafermions.

Deconfining Phase Transition in 2+1 D: the Georgi-Glashow Model

We analyze the finite temperature deconfining phase transition in 2+1 dimensional Georgi-Glashow model. We show explicitly that the transition is due to the restoration of the magnetic $Z_2$ symmetry and that it is in the Ising universality class. We find that neglecting effects of the charged $W$ bosons leads to incorrect predictions for the value of the critical temperature and the universality class of the transition, as well as for various correlation functions in the high temperature phase. We derive the effective action for the Polyakov loop in the high temperature phase and calculate the correlation functions of magnetic vortex operators.

Instanton molecules at high temperature - the Georgi-Glashow model and beyond

We show that correlators of some local operators in gauge theories are sensitive to the presence of the instantons even at high temperature where the latter are bound into instanton-anti-instanton "molecules". We calculate correlation functions of such operators in the deconfined phase of the 2+1 dimensional Georgi-Glashow model and discuss analogous quantities in the chirally symmetric phase of QCD. We clarify the mechanism by which the instanton-anti-instanton molecules contribute to the anomaly of axial U(1) at high temperature.

Newtonian Counterparts of Spin 2 Massless Discontinuities

Massive spin 2 theories in flat or cosmological ($Λ\ne 0$) backgrounds are subject to discontinuities as the masses tend to zero. We show and explain physically why their Newtonian limits do not inherit this behaviour. On the other hand, conventional ``Newtonian cosmology'', where $Λ$ is a constant source of the potential, displays discontinuities: e.g. for any finite range, $Λ$ can be totally removed.

Toroidal Compactification in String Theory from Chern-Simons Theory

A detailed study of the charge spectrum of three dimensional Abelian Topological Massive Gauge Theory (TMGT) is given. When this theory is defined on a manifold with two disconnected boundaries there are induced chiral Conformal Field Theories (CFT's) on the boundaries which can be interpreted as the left and right sectors of closed strings. We show that Narain constraints on toroidal compactification (integer, even, self-dual momentum lattice) have a natural interpretation in purely three dimensional terms. This is an important result which is necessary to construct toroidal compactification and heterotic string from Topological Membrane (TM) approach to string theory. We also derive the block structure of $c=1$ Rational Conformal Field Theory (RCFT) from the three dimensional gauge theory.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking at Two Loop in 3-d Massless Scalar Electrodynamics

In three dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons massless scalar electrodynamics with $ ϕ^6$ coupling, the $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken at two loop order regardless of the presence or absence of the Maxwell term. Dimensional transmutation takes place in pure Chern-Simons scalar electrodynamics. The beta function for the $ϕ^6$ coupling is independent of gauge couplings.
