On the planar free energy of matrix models

In this work we obtain the planar free energy for the Hermitian one-matrix model with various choices of the potential. We accomplish this by applying an approach that bypasses the usual diagonalization of the matrices and the introduction of the eigenvalue density, to directly zero in the evaluation of the planar free energy. In the first part of the paper, we focus on potentials with finitely many terms. For various choices of potentials, we manage to find closed expressions for the planar free energy, and in some cases determine or bound their radius of convergence as a series in the 't Hooft coupling. In the second part of the paper we consider specific examples of potentials with infinitely many terms, that arise in the study of ${\cal N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theories on $S^4$, via supersymmetric localization. In particular, we manage to write the planar free energy of two non-conformal examples: SU(N) with $N_f<2N$, and ${\cal N}=2^*$.

The planar limit of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver theories

We compute the planar limit of both the free energy and the expectation value of the $1/2$ BPS Wilson loop for four dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal quiver theories, with a product of SU($N$)s as gauge group and bi-fundamental matter. Supersymmetric localization reduces the problem to a multi-matrix model, that we rewrite in the zero-instanton sector as an effective action involving an infinite number of double-trace terms, determined by the relevant extended Cartan matrix. We find that the results, as in the case of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with a simple gauge group, can be written as sums over tree graphs. For the $\widehat{A_1}$ case, we find that the contribution of each tree can be interpreted as the partition function of a generalized Ising model defined on the tree; we conjecture that the partition functions of these models defined on trees satisfy the Lee-Yang property, i.e. all their zeros lie on the unit circle.

On scalar radiation

We discuss radiation in theories with scalar fields. Our key observation is that even in flat spacetime, the radiative fields depend qualitatively on the coupling of the scalar field to the Ricci scalar: for non-minimally coupled scalars, the radiative energy density is not positive definite, the radiated power is not Lorentz invariant and it depends on the derivative of the acceleration. We explore implications of this observation for radiation in conformal field theories. First, we find a relation between two coefficients that characterize radiation, that holds in all the conformal field theories we consider. Furthermore, we find evidence that for a $1/2$-BPS probe coupled to ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills, and following an arbitrary trajectory, the spacetime dependence of the one-point function of the energy-momentum tensor is independent of the Yang-Mills coupling.

Probing N=2 superconformal field theories with localization

We use supersymmetric localization to study probes of four dimensional Lagrangian N=2 superconformal field theories. We first derive a unique equation for the eigenvalue density of these theories. We observe that these theories have a Wigner eigenvalue density precisely when they satisfy a necessary condition for having a holographic dual with a sensible higher-derivative expansion. We then compute in the saddle-point approximation the vacuum expectation value of 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loops, and the two-point functions of these Wilson loops with the Lagrangian density and with the stress-energy tensor. This last computation also provides the corresponding Bremsstrahlung functions and entanglement entropies. As expected, whenever a finite fraction of the matter is in the fundamental representation, the results are drastically different from those of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

Exact probes of orientifolds

We compute the exact vacuum expectation value of circular Wilson loops for Euclidean ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills with $G=SO(N),Sp(N)$, in the fundamental and spinor representations. These field theories are dual to type IIB string theory compactified on $AdS_5\times {\mathbb R} {\mathbb P}^5$ plus certain choices of discrete torsion, and we use our results to probe this holographic duality. We first revisit the LLM-type geometries having $AdS_5\times {\mathbb R} {\mathbb P}^5$ as ground state. Our results clarify and refine the identification of these LLM-type geometries as bubbling geometries arising from fermions on a half harmonic oscillator. We furthermore identify the presence of discrete torsion with the one-fermion Wigner distribution becoming negative at the origin of phase space. We then turn to the string world-sheet interpretation of our results and argue that for the quantities considered they imply two features: first, the contribution coming from world-sheets with a single crosscap is closely related to the contribution coming from orientable world-sheets, and second, world-sheets with two crosscaps don't contribute to these quantities.

Exact momentum fluctuations of an accelerated quark in N=4 super Yang-Mills

In this work we consider a heavy quark moving with constant proper acceleration in the vacuum of any four dimensional conformal field theory. We argue that the two-point function of its momentum fluctuations is exactly captured by the Bremsstrahlung function that gives the total radiated power. For the particular case of N=4 SU(N) SYM this function is exactly known, so in this case we obtain an explicit expression for the momentum diffusion coefficient, and check that various limits of this result are reproduced by probe computations in AdS_5. Finally, we evaluate this transport coefficient for a heavy quark accelerated in the vacuum of N=4 SU(3) SYM, and comment on possible lessons of our results for the study of heavy quarks traversing the super Yang-Mills plasma.

Exact results for Wilson loops in arbitrary representations

We compute the exact vacuum expectation value of 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loops of ${\cal N}$=4 U(N) super Yang-Mills in arbitrary irreducible representations. By localization arguments, the computation reduces to evaluating certain integrals in a Gaussian matrix model, which we do using the method of orthogonal polynomials. Our results are particularly simple for Wilson loops in antisymmetric representations; in this case, we observe that the final answers admit an expansion where the coefficients are positive integers, and can be written in terms of sums over skew Young diagrams. As an application of our results, we use them to discuss the exact Bremsstrahlung functions associated to the corresponding heavy probes.

Exact results for static and radiative fields of a quark in N=4 super Yang-Mills

In this work (which supersedes our previous preprint arXiv:1112.2345) we determine the expectation value of the N=4$ SU(N) SYM Lagrangian density operator in the presence of an infinitely heavy static particle in the symmetric representation of SU(N), by means of a D3-brane probe computation. The result that we obtain coincides with two previous computations of different observables, up to kinematical factors. We argue that these agreements go beyond the D-brane probe approximation, which leads us to propose an exact formula for the expectation value of various operators. In particular, we provide an expression for the total energy loss by radiation of a heavy particle in the fundamental representation.

Gluonic fields of a static particle to all orders in 1/N

We determine the expectation value of the gauge invariant operator Tr [F^2+... ] for N=4 SU(N) SYM, in the presence of an infinitely heavy static particle in the symmetric representation of SU(N). We carry out the computation in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, by considering the perturbation of the dilaton field caused by the presence of a D3 brane dual to such an external probe. We find that the effective chromo-electric charge of the probe has exactly the same expression as the one recently found in the computation of energy loss by radiation.

Energy loss by radiation to all orders in 1/N

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the energy radiated by an infinitely massive half-BPS particle charged under N=4 SU(N) SYM, transforming in the symmetric or antisymmetric representation of the gauge group, and moving in the vacuum, to all orders in 1/N and for large 't Hooft coupling. For the antisymmetric case we consider D5-branes reaching the boundary of AdS_5 at arbitrary timelike trajectories, while for the symmetric case, we consider a D3-brane in AdS_5 that reaches the boundary at a hyperbola. This D3-brane solution is the analytic continuation of the one previously used to compute the expectation value of a circular Wilson loop. We compare our results to the one obtained for the fundamental representation by Mikhailov, obtained by considering a string in AdS_5.

Defect CFTs and holographic multiverse

We investigate some aspects of a recent proposal for a holographic description of the multiverse. Specifically, we focus on the implications on the suggested duality of the fluctuations of a bubble separating two universes with different cosmological constants. We do so by considering a similar problem in a 2+1 CFT with a codimension one defect, obtained by an M5-brane probe embedding in AdS_4x S^7, and studying its spectrum of fluctuations. Our results suggest that the kind of behavior required by the spectrum of bubble fluctuations is not likely to take place in defect CFTs with an AdS dual, although it might be possible if the defect supports a non-unitary theory.

Flavor from M5-branes

We study various aspects of the defect conformal field theory that arises when placing a single M5-brane probe in AdS_4 x S^7. We derive the full set of fluctuation modes and dimensions of the corresponding dual operators. We argue that the latter does not depend on the presence of a non-trivial magnetic flux on the M5-brane world-volume. Finally we give a mass to the hypermultiplet living on the defect, and compute the resulting mesonic spectrum.

Semiclassical Unimodular Gravity

Classically, unimodular gravity is known to be equivalent to General Relativity (GR), except for the fact that the effective cosmological constant $Λ$ has the status of an integration constant. Here, we explore various formulations of unimodular gravity beyond the classical limit. We first consider the non-generally covariant action formulation in which the determinant of the metric is held fixed to unity. We argue that the corresponding quantum theory is also equivalent to General Relativity for localized perturbative processes which take place in generic backgrounds of infinite volume (such as asymptotically flat spacetimes). Next, using the same action, we calculate semiclassical non-perturbative quantities, which we expect will be dominated by Euclidean instanton solutions. We derive the entropy/area ratio for cosmological and black hole horizons, finding agreement with GR for solutions in backgrounds of infinite volume, but disagreement for backgrounds with finite volume. In deriving the above results, the path integral is taken over histories with fixed 4-volume. We point out that the results are different if we allow the 4-volume of the different histories to vary over a continuum range. In this "generalized" version of unimodular gravity, one recovers the full set of Einstein's equations in the classical limit, including the trace, so $Λ$ is no longer an integration constant. Finally, we consider the generally covariant theory due to Henneaux and Teitelboim, which is classically equivalent to unimodular gravity. In this case, the standard semiclassical GR results are recovered provided that the boundary term in the Euclidean action is chosen appropriately.

Populating the swampland: the case of U(1)^496 and E_8 x U(1)^248

For d=10 N=1 SUGRA coupled to d=10 N=1 SYM, anomaly cancellation places severe constraints on the allowed gauge groups. Besides the ones known to appear in string theory, only U(1)^496 and E_8 x U(1)^248 are allowed. There are no known theories of quantum gravity that reduce in some limit to these two last supergravity theories, and in this note I present some evidence that those quantum theories might not exist. The first observation is that, upon compactification, requring that the quantum theory possesses a moduli space with finite volume typically implies the existence of singularities where the 4d gauge group is enhanced, but for these two theories that gauge enhancement is problematic from the 10d point of view. I also point out that while these four supergravity theories present repulson-type singularities, the known mechanism that repairs those singularities for the first two - the non-Abelian enhancon - is not available for the last two theories. In short, these two supergravity theories might be too Abelian for their own good.

BPS states and algebras from quivers

We discuss several aspects of D-brane moduli spaces and BPS spectra near orbifold points. We give a procedure to determine the decay products on a line of marginal stability, and we define the algebra of BPS states in terms of quivers. These issues are illustrated in detail in the case of type IIA theory on C^2/Z_N. We also show that many of these results can be extended to arbitrary points in the compactification moduli space using Pi-stability.
