Generalized tight p-frames and spectral bounds for Laplace-like operators

We prove sharp upper bounds for sums of eigenvalues (and other spectral functionals) of Laplace-like operators, including bi-Laplacian and fractional Laplacian. We show that among linear images of a highly symmetric domain, our spectral functionals are maximal on the original domain. We exploit the symmetries of the domain, and the operator, avoiding necessity of finding good test functions for variational problems. This is especially important for fractional Laplacian, since exact solutions are not even known on intervals, making it hard to find good test functions. To achieve our goals we generalize tight $p$-fusion frames, to extract the best possible geometric results for domains with isometry groups admitting tight $p$-frames. Any such group generates a tight $p$-fusion frame via conjugation of arbitrary projection matrix. We show that generalized tight $p$-frames can also be obtained by conjugation of arbitrary rectangular matrix, with frame constant depending on the singular values of the matrix.

Sharp spectral bounds on starlike domains

We prove sharp bounds on eigenvalues of the Laplacian that complement the Faber--Krahn and Luttinger inequalities. In particular, we prove that the ball maximizes the first eigenvalue and minimizes the spectral zeta function and heat trace. The normalization on the domain incorporates volume and a computable geometric factor that measures the deviation of the domain from roundness, in terms of moment of inertia and a support functional introduced by Pólya and Szegő. Additional functionals handled by our method include finite sums and products of eigenvalues. The results hold on convex and starlike domains, and for Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary conditions.

Spilling from a cognac glass

In the paper we study the shape of the fundamental sloshing mode of a liquid in a container. Our approach is based on a mathematical model which is an appropriate Steklov eigenvalue problem. We present numerical results, a physical experiment, photos of a surface of oscillating liquid and also rigorous mathematical results. We describe the relation of the above problem with the celebrated hot spots conjecture.

Sums of Laplace eigenvalues --- rotations and tight frames in higher dimensions

The sum of the first $n \geq 1$ eigenvalues of the Laplacian is shown to be maximal among simplexes for the regular simplex (the regular tetrahedron, in three dimensions), maximal among parallelepipeds for the hypercube, and maximal among ellipsoids for the ball, provided the volume and moment of inertia of an "inverse" body are suitably normalized. This result holds for Dirichlet, Robin and Neumann eigenvalues. Additionally, the cubical torus is shown to be maximal among flat tori. The method of proof involves tight frames for euclidean space generated by the orbits of the rotation group of the extremal domain. The ball is conjectured to maximize sums of Neumann eigenvalues among general convex domains, provided the volume and moment of inertia of the polar dual of the domain are suitably normalized.
