Nearly radial Neumann eigenfunctions on symmetric domains

We study the existence of Neumann eigenfunctions which do not change sign on the boundary of some special domains. We show that eigenfunctions which are strictly positive on the boundary exist on regular polygons with at least 5 sides, while on equilateral triangles and cubes it is not even possible to find an eigenfunction which is nonnegative on the boundary. We use analytic methods combined with symmetry arguments to prove the result for polygons with six or more sides. The case for the regular pentagon is harder. We develop a validated numerical method to prove this case, which involves iteratively bounding eigenvalues for a sequence of subdomains of the triangle. We use a learning algorithm to find and optimize this sequence of subdomains, making it straightforward to check our computations with standard software.

On mixed Dirichlet-Neumann eigenvalues of triangles

We order lowest mixed Dirichlet-Neumann eigenvalues of right triangles according to which sides we apply the Dirichlet conditions. It is generally true that Dirichlet condition on a superset leads to larger eigenvalues, but it is nontrivial to compare e.g. the mixed cases on triangles with just one Dirichlet side. As a consequence of that order we also classify the lowest Neumann and Dirichlet eigenvalues of rhombi according to their symmetry/antisymmetry with respect to the diagonal. We also give an order for the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann eigenvalues on arbitrary triangle, assuming two Dirichlet sides. The single Dirichlet side case is conjectured to also have appropriate order, following right triangular case.

On the shape of the fundamental sloshing mode in axisymmetric containers

In the paper we numerically study positions of high spots (extrema) of the fundamental sloshing mode of liquid in an axisymmetric tank. Our approach is based on a linear model reducing the problem to appropriate Steklov eigenvalue problem. We propose a numerical scheme for calculating sloshing modes and a novel method of making images of oscillating fluid. We also describe the relation of the high spot problem to the celebrated hot spots conjecture.

On the hot spots conjecture for acute triangles

We show that the hot spots conjecture of J. Rauch holds for acute triangles if one of the angles is not larger than $π/6$. More precisely, we show that the second Neumann eigenfunction on those acute triangles has no maximum or minimum inside the domain. We first simplify the problem by showing that absence of critical points on two sides implies no critical points inside a triangle. This result applies to any acute triangle and might help prove the conjecture for arbitrary acute triangles. Then we show that there are no critical points on two sides assuming one small angle. We also establish simplicity for the second Neumann eigenvalue for all non-equilateral triangles.
