Entangled states in the role of witnesses

Quantum entanglement lies at the heart of quantum mechanics and quantum information processing. In this work, we show a new framework where entangled states play the role of witnesses. We extend the notion of entanglement witnesses, developing a hierarchy of witnesses for classes of observables. This hierarchy captures the fact that entangled states act as witnesses for detecting entanglement witnesses and separable states act as witnesses for the set of non-block-positive Hermitian operators. Indeed, more hierarchies of witnesses exist. We introduce the concept of \emph{finer} and \emph{optimal} entangled states. These definitions not only give an unambiguous and non-numeric quantification of entanglement and a new perspective on edge states but also answer the open question of what the remainder of the best separable approximation of a density matrix. Furthermore, we classify all entangled states into disjoint families with optimal entangled states at its heart. This implies that we can focus only on the study of a typical family with optimal entangled states at its core when we investigate entangled states. Our framework also assembles many seemingly different findings with simple arguments that do not require lengthy calculations.

Characterization and properties of weakly optimal entanglement witnesses

We present an analysis of the properties and characteristics of weakly optimal entanglement witnesses, that is witnesses whose expectation value vanishes on at least one product vector. Any weakly optimal entanglement witness can be written as the form of $W^{wopt}=σ-c_σ^{max} I$, where $c_σ^{max}$ is a non-negative number and $I$ is the identity matrix. We show the relation between the weakly optimal witness $W^{wopt}$ and the eigenvalues of the separable states $σ$. Further we give an application of weakly optimal witnesses for constructing entanglement witnesses in a larger Hilbert space by extending the result of [P. Badzicag {\it et al}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 88}, 010301(R) (2013)], and we examine their geometric properties.

Universal methods for extending any entanglement witness from the bipartite to the multipartite case

Any bipartite entanglement witness $W$ can be written as $W=c_σI-σ$, where $σ$ is a quantum state, $I$ is the identity matrix, and $c_σ$ is a non-negative number. We present a general method to extend the given entanglement witness to multipartite cases via purification, partial purification, and direct tensor of the quantum state $σ$. Our methods extend $σ$ but leave the parameter $c_σ$ untouched. This is very valuable since the parameter is generally not easy to compute.

Structural physical approximations and entanglement witnesses

The structural physical approximation (SPA) to a positive map is considered to be one of the most important method to detect entanglement in the real physical world. We first show that an arbitrary entanglement witness (EW) $W$ can be constructed from a separable density matrix $σ$ in the form of $W=σ-c_σ I$, where $c_σ$ is a non-negative number and $I$ is the identity matrix. Following the general form of EWs from separable states, we show a sufficient condition and a sufficient and necessary condition in low dimensions of that SPAs to positive maps do not define entanglement-breaking channels. We show that either the SPA of an EW or the SPA of the partial transposition of the EW in low dimensions is an entanglement-breaking channel. We give sufficient conditions of violating the SPA conjecture [\emph{Phys. Rev. A}{\bf 78,} 062105 (2008)]. Our results indicate that the SPA conjecture is independent of whether or not positive maps are optimal.

A sufficient condition of violating the SPA conjecture

Based on the general form of entanglement witnesses constructed from separable states, we first show a sufficient condition of violating the structural physical approximation (SPA) conjecture [Phys. Rev. A 78, 062105 (2008)]. Then we discuss the SPA conjecture for decomposable entanglement witnesses. Moreover, we make geometric illustrations of the connection between entanglement witnesses and the sets of quantum states, separable states, and entangled states comparing with planes and vectors in Euclidean space.

Constructing all entanglement witnesses from density matrices

We demonstrate a general procedure to construct entanglement witnesses for any entangled state. This procedure is based on the trace inequality and a general form of entanglement witnesses, which is in the form $W=ρ-c_ρ I$, where $ρ$ is a density matrix, $c_ρ$ is a non-negative number related to $ρ$, and $I$ is the identity matrix. The general form of entanglement witnesses is deduced from Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism, that can be reinterpreted as that all quantum states can be obtained by a maximally quantum entangled state pass through certain completely positive maps. Furthermore, we provide the necessary and sufficient condition of the entanglement witness $W=ρ-c_ρI$ in operation, as well as in theory.
