Spectrum of weighted Birkhoff average

Let $\{s_n\}_{n\in\N}$ be a decreasing nonsummable sequence of positive reals. In this paper, we investigate the weighted Birkhoff average $\frac{1}{S_n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}s_kϕ(T^kx)$ on aperiodic irreducible subshift of finite type $Σ_{\bf A}$ where $ϕ: Σ_{\bf A}\mapsto \R$ is a continuous potential. Firstly, we show the entropy spectrum of the weighed Birkhoff averages remains the same as that of the Birkhoff averages. Then we calculate the packing spectrum of the weighed Birkhoff averages. It turns out that we can have two cases, either the packing dimension of every level set equals to its Hausdorff dimension or for every nonempty level set it is equal to the packing dimension of the whole space.

Typical absolute continuity for classes of dynamically defined measures

We consider one-parameter families of smooth uniformly contractive iterated function systems $\{f^λ_j\}$ on the real line. Given a family of parameter dependent measures $\{μ_λ\}$ on the symbolic space, we study geometric and dimensional properties of their images under the natural projection maps $Π^λ$. The main novelty of our work is that the measures $μ_λ$ depend on the parameter, whereas up till now it has been usually assumed that the measure on the symbolic space is fixed and the parameter dependence comes only from the natural projection. This is especially the case in the question of absolute continuity of the projected measure $(Π^λ)_*μ_λ$, where we had to develop a new approach in place of earlier attempt which contains an error. Our main result states that if $μ_λ$ are Gibbs measures for a family of Hölder continuous potentials $ϕ^λ$, with Hölder continuous dependence on $λ$ and $\{Π^λ\}$ satisfy the transversality condition, then the projected measure $(Π^λ)_*μ_λ$ is absolutely continuous for Lebesgue a.e.\ $λ$, such that the ratio of entropy over the Lyapunov exponent is strictly greater than $1$. We deduce it from a more general almost sure lower bound on the Sobolev dimension for families of measures with regular enough dependence on the parameter. Under less restrictive assumptions, we also obtain an almost sure formula for the Hausdorff dimension. As applications of our results, we study stationary measures for iterated function systems with place-dependent probabilities (place-dependent Bernoulli convolutions and the Blackwell measure for binary channel) and equilibrium measures for hyperbolic IFS with overlaps (in particular: natural measures for non-homogeneous self-similar IFS and certain systems corresponding to random continued fractions).

On the convergence rate of the chaos game

This paper studies how long it takes the orbit of the chaos game to reach a certain density inside the attractor of a strictly contracting iterated function system of which we only assume that its lower dimension is positive. We show that the rate of growth of this cover time is determined by the Minkowski dimension of the push-forward of the shift invariant measure with exponential decay of correlations driving the chaos game. Moreover, we bound the expected value of the cover time from above and below with multiplicative logarithmic correction terms. As an application, for Bedford-McMullen carpets we completely characterise the family of probability vectors which minimise the Minkowski dimension of Bernoulli measures. Interestingly, these vectors have not appeared in any other aspect of Bedford-McMullen carpets before.

Assouad dimension of planar self-affine sets

We calculate the Assouad dimension of a planar self-affine set $X$ satisfying the strong separation condition and the projection condition and show that $X$ is minimal for the conformal Assouad dimension. Furthermore, we see that such a self-affine set $X$ adheres to very strong tangential regularity by showing that any two points of $X$, which are generic with respect to a self-affine measure having simple Lyapunov spectrum, share the same collection of tangent sets.

Dimension of the repeller for a piecewise expanding affine map

In this paper, we study the dimension theory of a class of piecewise affine systems in euclidean spaces suggested by Michael Barnsley, with some applications to the fractal image compression. It is a more general version of the class considered in the work of Keane, Simon and Solomyak [The dimension of graph directed attractors with overlaps on the line, with an application to a problem in fractal image recognition. {\it Fund. Math.}, {\bf 180}(3):279-292, 2003] and can be considered as the continuation of the works [On the dimension of self-affine sets and measures with overlaps. {\it Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.}, {\bf 144}(10):4427-4440, 2016], [On the dimension of triangular self-affine sets. {\it Erg. Th. \& Dynam. Sys.}, to appear.] by the authors. We also present some applications of our results for the generalized Takagi functions and fractal interpolation functions.

Dimension maximizing measures for self-affine systems

In this paper we study the dimension theory of planar self-affine sets satisfying dominated splitting in the linear parts and strong separation condition. The main results of this paper is the existence of dimension maximizing Gibbs measures (Käenmäki measures). To prove this phenomena, we show that the Ledrappier-Young formula holds for Gibbs measures and we introduce a transversality type condition for the strong-stable directions on the projective space.

On some non-linear projections of self-similar sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In the last years considerable attention has been paid for the orthogonal and non-linear projections of self-similar sets. In this paper we consider orthogonal transformation-free self-similar sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$, i.e. the generating IFS has the form $\left\{ λ_i \underline{x} + \underline{t}_i \right\}_{i=1}^q$. We show that if the dimension of the set is strictly bigger than $1$ then the projection of the set under some non-linear functions onto the real line has dimension $1$. As an application, we show that the distance set of such self-similar sets has dimension $1$. Moreover, the third algebraic product of a self-similar set with itself on the real line has dimension $1$ if its dimension is at least $1/3$.

On the Ledrappier-Young formula for self-affine measures

Ledrappier and Young introduced a relation between entropy, Lyapunov exponents and dimension for invariant measures of diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. In this paper, we show that a self-affine measure on the plane satisfies the Ledrappier-Young formula if the corresponding iterated function system (IFS) satisfies the strong separation condition and the linear parts satisfy the dominated splitting condition. We give sufficient conditions, inspired by Ledrappier and by Falconer and Kempton, that the dimensions of such a self-affine measure is equal to the Lyapunov dimension. We show some applications, namely, we give another proof for Hueter-Lalley's theorem and we consider self-affine measures and sets generated by lower triangular matrices.

On the dimension of the graph of the classical Weierstrass function

This paper examines dimension of the graph of the famous Weierstrass non-differentiable function \[ W_{λ, b} (x) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}λ^n\cos(2πb^n x) \] for an integer $b \ge 2$ and $1/b < λ< 1$. We prove that for every $b$ there exists (explicitly given) $λ_b \in (1/b, 1)$ such that the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of $W_{λ, b}$ is equal to $D = 2+\frac{\logλ}{\log b}$ for every $λ\in(λ_b,1)$. We also show that the dimension is equal to $D$ for almost every $λ$ on some larger interval. This partially solves a well-known thirty-year-old conjecture. Furthermore, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of the function \[ f (x) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}λ^nϕ(b^n x) \] for an integer $b \ge 2$ and $1/b < λ< 1$ is equal to $D$ for a typical $\mathbb Z$-periodic $C^3$ function $ϕ$.
