Dynamics of large scale networks following a merger

We study the dynamic network of relationships among avatars in the massively multiplayer online game Planetside 2. In the spring of 2014, two separate servers of this game were merged, and as a result, two previously distinct networks were combined into one. We observed the evolution of this network in the seven month period following the merger and report our observations. We found that some structures of original networks persist in the combined network for a long time after the merger. As the original avatars are gradually removed, these structures slowly dissolve, but they remain observable for a surprisingly long time. We present a number of visualizations illustrating the post-merger dynamics and discuss time evolution of selected quantities characterizing the topology of the network.

Good edge-labelings and graphs with girth at least five

A good edge-labeling of a graph [Araújo, Cohen, Giroire, Havet, Discrete Appl. Math., forthcoming] is an assignment of numbers to the edges such that for no pair of vertices, there exist two non-decreasing paths. In this paper, we study edge-labeling on graphs with girth at least 5. In particular we verify, under this additional hypothesis, a conjecture by Araújo et al. This conjecture states that if the average degree of G is less than 3 and G is minimal without an edge-labeling, then G \in {C_3,K_{2,3}}. (For the case when the girth is 4, we give a counterexample.)

Square-Root Finding Problem In Graphs, A Complete Dichotomy Theorem

Graph G is the square of graph H if two vertices x,y have an edge in G if and only if x,y are of distance at most two in H. Given H it is easy to compute its square H^2. Determining if a given graph G is the square of some graph is not easy in general. Motwani and Sudan proved that it is NP-complete to determine if a given graph G is the square of some graph. The graph introduced in their reduction is a graph that contains many triangles and is relatively dense. Farzad et al. proved the NP-completeness for finding a square root for girth 4 while they gave a polynomial time algorithm for computing a square root of girth at least six. Adamaszek and Adamaszek proved that if a graph has a square root of girth six then this square root is unique up to isomorphism. In this paper we consider the characterization and recognition problem of graphs that are square of graphs of girth at least five. We introduce a family of graphs with exponentially many non-isomorphic square roots, and as the main result of this paper we prove that the square root finding problem is NP-complete for square roots of girth five. This proof is providing the complete dichotomy theorem for square root problem in terms of the girth of the square roots.

Random lifts of $K_5\setminus e$ are 3-colourable

Amit, Linial, and Matou\vsek (Random lifts of graphs III: independence and chromatic number, Random Struct. Algorithms, 2001) have raised the following question: Is the chromatic number of random $h$-lifts of $K_5$ asymptotically (for $h\to\infty$) almost surely equal to a single number? In this paper, we offer the following partial result: The chromatic number of a random lift of $K_5\setminus e$ is asymptotically almost surely three.
