The $πη$ interaction and $a_0$ resonances in photon-photon scattering

We revisit the information on the two lightest $a_0$ resonances and $S$-wave $πη$ scattering that can be extracted from photon-photon scattering experiments. For this purpose we construct a model for the $S$-wave photon-photon amplitudes which satisfies analyticity properties, two-channel unitarity and obeys the soft photon as well as the soft pion constraints. The underlying I=1 hadronic $T$-matrix involves six phenomenological parameters and is able to account for two resonances below 1.5 GeV.We perform a combined fit of the $γγ\to πη$ and $γγ\to K_SK_S$ high statistics experimental data from the Belle collaboration. Minimisation of the $χ^2$ is found to have two distinct solutions with approximately equal $χ^2$. One of these exhibits a light and narrow excited $a_0$ resonance analogous to the one found in the Belle analysis. This however requires a peculiar coincidence between the $J=0$ and $J=2$ resonance effects which is likely to be unphysical. In both solutions the $a_0(980)$ resonance appears as a pole on the second Riemann sheet. The location of this pole in the physical solution is determined to be $m-iΓ/2=1000.7^{+12.9}_{-0.7} -i\,36.6^{+12.7}_{-2.6}$ MeV. The solutions are also compared to experimental data in the kinematical region of the decay $η\toπ^0γγ$. In this region an isospin violating contribution associated with $π^+π^-$ rescattering must be added for which we provide a dispersive evaluation.

$a_0-f_0$ mixing in the Khuri-Treiman equations for $η\to 3π$

A reliable determination of the isospin breaking double quark mass ratio from precise experimental data on $η\to 3π$ decays should be based on the chiral expansion of the amplitude supplemented with a Khuri-Treiman type dispersive treatment of the final-state interactions. We discuss an extension of this formalism which allows to estimate the effects of the $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ resonances and their mixing on the $η\to 3π$ amplitudes. Matrix generalisations of the equations describing elastic $ππ$ rescattering with $I=0,\,2$ are introduced which accomodate both $ππ/K\bar{K}$ and $ηπ/K\bar{K}$ coupled-channel rescattering. Isospin violation induced by the physical $K^+-K^0$ mass difference and by direct $u-d$ mass difference effects are both accounted for in the dispersive integrals. Numerical solutions are constructed which illustrate how the large resonance effects at 1 GeV propagate down to low energies. They remain small in the physical region of the decay, due to the matching constraints with the NLO chiral amplitude, but they are not negligible and go in the sense of further improving the agreement with experiment for the Dalitz plot parameters.

Form factors of the isovector scalar current and the $ηπ$ scattering phase shifts

A model for S-wave $ηπ$ scattering is proposed which could be realistic in an energy range from threshold up to above one GeV, where inelasticity is dominated by the $K\bar{K}$ channel. The $T$-matrix, satisfying two-channel unitarity, is given in a form which matches the chiral expansion results at order $p^4$ exactly for the $ηπ\toηπ$, $ηπ\to K\bar{K}$ amplitudes and approximately for $K\bar{K}\to K\bar{K}$. It contains six phenomenological parameters. Asymptotic conditions are imposed which ensure a minimal solution of the Muskhelishvili-Omnès problem, thus allowing to compute the $ηπ$ and $K\bar{K}$ form factor matrix elements of the $I=1$ scalar current from the $T$-matrix. The phenomenological parameters are determined such as to reproduce the experimental properties of the $a_0(980)$, $a_0(1450)$ resonances, as well as the chiral results of the $ηπ$ and $K\bar{K}$ scalar radii which are predicted to be remarkably small at $O(p^4)$. This $T$-matrix model could be used for a unified treatment of the $ηπ$ final-state interaction problem in processes such as $η'\to ηππ$, $ϕ\toηπγ$, or the $ηπ$ initial-state interaction in $η\to3π$.

Analyticity of $ηπ$ isospin-violating form factors and the $τ\toηπν$ second-class decay

We consider the evaluation of the $ηπ$ isospin-violating vector and scalar form factors relying on a systematic application of analyticity and unitarity, combined with chiral expansion results. It is argued that the usual analyticity properties do hold (i.e. no anomalous thresholds are present) in spite of the instability of the $η$ meson in QCD. Unitarity relates the vector form factor to the $ηπ\to ππ$ amplitude: we exploit progress in formulating and solving the Khuri-Treiman equations for $η\to 3π$ and in experimental measurements of the Dalitz plot parameters to evaluate the shape of the $ρ$-meson peak. Observing this peak in the energy distribution of the $τ\to ηπν$ decay would be a background-free signature of a second-class amplitude. The scalar form factor is also estimated from a phase dispersive representation using a plausible model for the $ηπ$ elastic scattering $S$-wave phase shift and a sum rule constraint in the inelastic region. We indicate how a possibly exotic nature of the $a_0(980)$ scalar meson manifests itself in a dispersive approach. A remark is finally made on a second-class amplitude in the $τ\toππν$ decay.

Dispersive evaluation of the second-class amplitude $τ\toηπν_τ$ in the standard model

We reevaluate the two form factors relevant for the $ηπ$ second-class $τ$ decay mode, making systematic use of analyticity, unitarity, combined with updated inputs to the NLO chiral constraints. We focus, in particular, on the shape of the $ρ$ resonance peak which is a background-free signature of a second-class current. Its dispersive construction requires the $ηπ\toππ$ scattering amplitude which we derive from a family of Khuri-Treiman equations solutions constrained with accurate recent results on the $η\to3π$ Dalitz plot.

Unified dispersive approach to $γ^*\toγππ$ and $γγ\toππ$

A representation of the amplitude $γ^*(q^2)\toγππ$ is proposed which combines large $N_c$ chiral resonance Lagrangian modelling with general unitarity and analyticity properties. The amplitude is constrained from $γγ$ scattering results and $e^+ e^- \toγπ^0π^0$ measurements by the CMD-2 and SND collaborations. As an application, the contribution of the $ππ+γ$ states in the HVP contribution to the muon $g-2$ are reconsidered, taking into account the effect of the strong $S$-wave $ππ$ rescattering in a model independent way.

Unified dispersive approach to real and virtual photon-photon scattering at low energy

Previous representations of pion pair production amplitudes by two real photons at low energy, which combine dispersion theoretical constraints with elastic unitariy, chiral symmetry and soft photon constraints are generalized to the case where one photon is virtual. The constructed amplitudes display explicitly the dependence on the $ππ$ phase-shifts, on pion form factors and on pion polarizabilities. They apply both for space-like and time-like virtualities despite the apparent overlap of the left and right-hand cuts, by implementing a definition of resonance exchange amplitudes complying with analyticity and consistent limiting prescriptions for the energy variables. Applications are made to the pion generalized polarizabilies, to vector meson radiative decays, and to the $σγ$ electromagnetic form factor. Finally, and evaluation of the contribution of $γππ$ states in the hadronic vacuum polarization to the muon $g-2$ is given, which should be less model dependent than previous estimates.

Couplings of light I=0 scalar mesons to simple operators in the complex plane

The flavour and glue structure of the light scalar mesons in QCD are probed by studying the couplings of the I=0 mesons $σ(600)$ and $f_0(980)$ to the operators $\bar{q}q$, $α_s G^2$ and to two photons. The Roy dispersive representation for the $ππ$ amplitude $t_0^0(s)$ is used to determine the pole positions as well as the residues in the complex plane. On the real axis, $t_0^0$ is constrained to solve the Roy equation together with elastic unitarity up to the $K\Kbar$ threshold leading to an improved description of the $f_0(980)$. The problem of using a two-particle threshold as a matching point is discussed. A simple relation is established between the coupling of a scalar meson to an operator $j_S$ and the value of the related pion form-factor computed at the resonance pole. Pion scalar form-factors as well as two-photon partial-wave amplitudes are expressed as coupled-channel Omnès dispersive representations. Subtraction constants are constrained by chiral symmetry and experimental data. Comparison of our results for the $\bar{q}q$ couplings with earlier determinations of the analogous couplings of the lightest I=1 and $I=1/2$ scalar mesons are compatible with an assignment of the $σ$, $κ$, $a_0(980)$, $f_0(980)$ into a nonet. Concerning the gluonic operator $α_s G^2$ we find a significant coupling to both the $σ$ and the $f_0(980)$.

Final state interactions and CP violation in B decays to three pseudoscalars

We study CP violation and final state interactions between pions and kaons in B+, B-, B0 and bar B0 decays into K pi pi. The weak transition amplitudes consist of two terms: the first part is derived in QCD factorization approach and the second one is a phenomenological long-distance charming penguin contribution. The final state K pi interactions in S- and P-waves are described by strange scalar and vector form factors, respectively. These are determined using a unitary coupled channel model together with chiral symmetry and asymptotic QCD constraints. The final state interactions are dominated by presence of the scalar K*0(1430) and the vector K*(892) resonances. We show that additional charming penguin amplitudes are needed to reproduce the latest experimental K pi effective mass and helicity angle distributions, branching fractions and asymmetries obtained by Belle and BaBar collaborations.

MO analysis of the high statistics Belle results on $γγ\to π^+π^-,π^0π^0$ with chiral constraints

We reconsider Muskhelishvili-Omnès (MO) dispersive representations of photon-photon scattering to two pions, motivated by the very high statistics results recently released by the Belle collaboration for charged as well as neutral pion pairs and also by recent progress in the determination of the low-energy $ππ$ scattering amplitude. Applicability of this formalism is extended beyond 1 GeV by taking into account inelasticity due to $K\bar{K}$ . A modified MO representation is derived which has the advantage that all polynomial ambiguities are collected into the subtraction constants and have simple relations to pion polarizabilities. It is obtained by treating differently the exactly known QED Born term and the other components of the left-hand cut. These components are approximated by a sum over resonances. All resonances up to spin two and masses up to $\simeq1.3$ GeV are included. The tensor contributions to the left-hand cut are found to be numerically important. We perform fits to the data imposing chiral constraints, in particular, using a model independent sum rule result on the $p^6$ chiral coupling $c_{34}$. Such theoretical constraints are necessary because the experimental errors are dominantly systematic. Results on further $p^6$ couplings and pion dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities are then derived from the fit. The relevance of the new data for distinguishing between two possible scenarios of isospin breaking in the $f_0(980)$ region is discussed.

CP violation and kaon-pion interactions in B --> K pi+ pi- decays

We study CP violation and the contribution of the strong kaon-pion interactions in the three body B --> K pi+ pi- decays. We extend our recent work on the effect of the two-pion S- and P-wave interactions to that of the corresponding kaon-pion ones. The weak amplitudes have a first term derived in QCD factorization and a second one as a phenomenological contribution added to the QCD penguin amplitudes. The effective QCD coefficients include the leading order contributions plus next-to-leading order vertex and penguins corrections. The matrix elements of the transition to the vacuum of the kaon-pion pairs, appearing naturally in the factorization formulation, are described by the strange K pi scalar (S-wave) and vector (P-wave) form factors. These are determined from Muskhelishvili-Omnes coupled channel equations using experimental kaon-pion T-matrix elements, together with chiral symmetry and asymptotic QCD constraints. From the scalar form factor study, the modulus of the K*_0(1430) decay constant is found to be (32 +/- 5) MeV. The additional phenomenological amplitudes are fitted to reproduce the K pi effective mass and helicity angle distributions, the B --> K*(892) pi branching ratios and the CP asymmetries of the recent data from Belle and BaBar collaborations. We use also the new measurement by the BaBar group of the phase difference between the B0 and B0bar decay amplitudes to K*(892) pi. Our predicted B+/- --> K*_0(1430) pi+/-, K*_0(1430) --> K+/- pi-\+ branching fraction, (11.6 +/- 0.6) 10^{-6}, is smaller than the result of the analyzes of both collaborations. For the neutral B0 decays, the predicted value is (11.1 +- 0.5) 10^{-6}. In order to reduce the large systematic uncertainties in the experimental determination of the B --> K*_0(1430) pi branching fractions, a new parametrization is proposed.

Towards a unitary Dalitz plot analysis of three-body hadronic B decays

A unitary model of the final state kaon pion interaction amplitudes in the B --> K pi pi decays is constructed. The weak decay penguin amplitudes, derived in QCD factorization, are supplemented by phenomenological contributions. The strange kaon- pion scalar and vector form factors are used to calculate the kaon pion effective mass and helicity angle distributions, branching ratios, CP asymmetries and the phase difference between the B0 and anti B0 decay amplitudes to K*(892) pi. The fit on the phenomenological parameters leads to a good agreement with the experimental data, particularly for the B --> K*(892) pi decays. However, our predicted B+- --> K*0(1430) pi+-, K*0(1430)--> K+-pi-+ branching fraction is smaller than the results of the Belle and BaBar collaborations, obtained from isobar model analyses. A new parameterization of the S-wave kaon- pion effective mass distribution, which can be used in future experimental Dalitz plot analyses, is proposed.

Four-point correlator constraints on electromagnetic chiral parameters and resonance effective Lagrangians

We pursue the analysis of a set of generalized DGMLY sum rules for the electromagnetic chiral parameters at order $e^2p^2$ and discuss implications for effective Lagrangians with resonances. We exploit a formalism in which charge spurions are introduced and treated as sources. We show that no inconsistency arises from anomalies up to quadratic order in the spurions. We focus on the sum rules associated with QCD 4-point correlators which were not analyzed in detail before. Convergence properties of the sum rules are deduced from a general analysis of the form of the counterterms in the presence of electromagnetic spurions. Following the approach in which vector and axial-vector resonances are described with antisymmetric tensor fields and have a chiral order, we show that the convergence constraints are violated at chiral order four and can be satisfied by introducing a set of terms of order six. The relevant couplings get completely and uniquely determined from a set of generalized Weinberg sum-rule relations. An update on the corrections to Dashen's low-energy theorem is given.

Electromagnetic corrections in the anomaly sector

Chiral perturbation theory in the anomaly sector for $N_f=2$ is extended to include dynamical photons, thereby allowing a complete treatment of isospin breaking. A minimal set of independent chiral lagrangian terms is determined and the divergence structure is worked out. There are contributions from irreducible and also from reducible one-loop graphs, a feature of ChPT at order larger than four. The generating functional is non-anomalous at order $e^2p^4$, but not necessarily at higher order in $e^2$. Practical applications to $γπ\toππ$ and to the $π^0\to2γ$ amplitudes are considered. In the latter case, a complete discussion of the corrections beyond current algebra is presented including quark mass as well as electromagnetic effects.

N_f Dependence of the Quark Condensate from a Chiral Sum Rule

How fast does the quark condensate in QCD-like theories vary as a function of $N_f$ is inferred from real QCD using chiral perturbation theory at order one-loop. A sum rule is derived for the single relevant chiral coupling-constant, $L_6$. A model independent lower bound is obtained. The spectral function satisfies a Weinberg-type superconvergence relation. It is discussed how this, together with chiral constraints allows a solid evaluation of $L_6$, based on experimental $ππ-K\bar K$ S-wave T-matrix input. The resulting value of $L_6$ is compatible with a strong $N_f$ dependence possibly suggestive of the proximity of a chiral phase transition

Comment on the Prediction of Two-loop Standard Chiral Perturbation Theory for Low-Energy ππScattering

Four of the six parameters defining the two-loop ππscattering amplitude have been determined using Roy dispersion relations. Combining this information with the Standard χPT expressions, we obtain the threshold parameters, low-energy phases and the O(p^4) constants $l_1^r, l_2^r$. The result $l_2^r ( M_ρ ) = ( 1.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.9 ) \times 10^{-3} ( {\bar l_2} = 4.17 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.43$) reproduces the correct D-waves but it is incompatible with existing Standard χPT analyses of $K_{l4}$ form factors beyond one loop.
