57^{57}Zn ββ-delayed proton emission establishes the 56^{56}Ni rprp-process waiting point bypass

We measured the 57^{57}Zn ββ-delayed proton (ββp) and γγ emission at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. We find a 57^{57}Zn half-life of 43.6 ±\pm 0.2 ms, ββp branching ratio of (84.7 ±\pm 1.4)%, and identify four transitions corresponding to the exotic ββ-γγ-pp decay mode, the second such identification in the fpf p-shell. The p/γp/γ ratio was used to correct for isospin mixing while determining the 57^{57}Zn mass via the isobaric multiplet mass equation. Previously, it was uncertain as to whether the rp-process flow could bypass the textbook waiting point 56^{56}Ni for astrophysical conditions relevant to Type-I X-ray bursts. Our results definitively establish the existence of the 56^{56}Ni bypass, with 14-17% of the rprp-process flow taking this route.

Impact of clustering on the 8^8Li ββ decay and recoil form factors

We place unprecedented constraints on recoil corrections in the ββ decay of 8^8Li, by identifying a strong correlation between them and the 8^8Li ground state quadrupole moment in large-scale ab initio calculations. The results are essential for improving the sensitivity of high-precision experiments that probe the weak interaction theory and test physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In addition, our calculations predict a 2+2^+ state of the α+αα+α system that is energetically accessible to ββ decay but has not been observed in the experimental 8^8Be energy spectrum, and has an important effect on the recoil corrections and ββ decay for the A=8A=8 systems. This state and an associated 0+0^+ state are notoriously difficult to model due to their cluster structure and collective correlations, but become feasible for calculations in the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell-model framework.

Improved Limit on Tensor Currents in the Weak Interaction from 8^8Li ββ Decay

The electroweak interaction in the Standard Model (SM) is described by a pure vector-axial-vector structure, though any Lorentz-invariant component could contribute. In this work, we present the most precise measurement of tensor currents in the low-energy regime by examining the ββ-νˉ\barν correlation of trapped 8^{8}Li ions with the Beta-decay Paul Trap. We find aβν=−0.3325±0.0013stat±0.0019systa_{βν} = -0.3325 \pm 0.0013_{stat} \pm 0.0019_{syst} at 1σ1σ for the case of coupling to right-handed neutrinos (CT=−CT′)(C_T=-C_T'), which is consistent with the SM prediction.

The Core of 25^{25}F studied by the 25^{25}F(-1p)24^{24}O reaction

The 25^{25}F(5/2+)(−1p)245/2^+) (-1p) ^{24}O reaction was studied at the NSCL using the S800 spectrometer. The experimental spectroscopic factor for the ground-state to ground-state transition indicates a substantial depletion of the proton d5/2d_{5/2} strength compared to shell-model expectations. Our result supports the findings reported by Tang \textit{et al.}, from their study of the (p,2p)(p,2p) reaction at RIBF. The overlap between the 25^{25}F and 24^{24}O ground-states is considerably less than anticipated if 24^{24}O acted as a robust and rigid doubly-magic core in 25^{25}F. We interpret the results within the framework of the Particle-Vibration Coupling (PVC) of a d5/2d_{5/2} proton coupled to a quadrupole phonon of an effective core. This approach provides a good description of the experimental data by requiring an effective 24^{24}O* core with a phonon energy of ℏω2\hbarω_2= 3.2 MeV, and a B(E2) 2.7B(E2) ~ 2.7 W.u., softer and more collective than a bare 24^{24}O. Both the Nilsson deformed mean field and the PVC models appear to capture the properties of the effective core of 25^{25}F, suggesting that the additional proton tends to polarize the free, doubly magic 24^{24}O in such a way that it becomes either slightly deformed or a quadrupole vibrator.

Experimental identification of the T=1T = 1, Jπ=6+J^π = 6^+ state of 54^{54}Co and isospin symmetry in A=54A = 54 studied via one-nucleon knockout reactions

New experimental data obtained from γγ-ray tagged one-neutron and one-proton knockout from 55^{55}Co is presented. A candidate for the sought-after T=1,Tz=0,Jπ=6+T=1, T_z = 0, J^π = 6^+ state in 54^{54}Co is proposed based on a comparison to the new data on 54^{54}Fe, the corresponding observables predicted by large-scale-shell-model (LSSM) calculations in the full fpfp-model space employing charge-dependent contributions, and isospin-symmetry arguments. Furthermore, possible isospin-symmetry breaking in the A=54A=54, T=1T=1 triplet is studied by calculating the experimental cc coefficients of the isobaric mass multiplet equation (IMME) up to the maximum possible spin J=6J=6 expected for the (1f7/2)−2(1f_{7/2})^{-2} two-hole configuration relative to the doubly-magic nucleus 56^{56}Ni. The experimental quantities are compared to the theoretically predicted cc coefficients from LSSM calculations using two-body matrix elements obtained from a realistic chiral effective field theory potential at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3^3LO).

In-beam γγ-ray spectroscopy at the proton dripline: 40^{40}Sc

We report on the first in-beam γγ-ray spectroscopy of the proton-dripline nucleus 40^{40}Sc using two-nucleon pickup onto an intermediate-energy rare-isotope beam of 38^{38}Ca. The 9^{9}Be(38^{38}Ca,40^{40}Sc+γ+γ)X reaction at 60.9 MeV/nucleon mid-target energy selectively populates states in 40^{40}Sc for which the transferred proton and neutron couple to high orbital angular momentum. In turn, due to angular-momentum selection rules in proton emission and the nuclear structure and energetics of 39^{39}Ca, such states in 40^{40}Sc then exhibit γγ-decay branches although they are well above the proton separation energy. This work uniquely complements results from particle spectroscopy following charge-exchange reactions on 40^{40}Ca as well as 40^{40}Ti EC/β+β^+ decay which both display very different selectivities. The population and γγ-ray decay of the previously known first (5−)(5^-) state at 892 keV and the observation of a new level at 2744 keV are discussed in comparison to the mirror nucleus and shell-model calculations. On the experimental side, this work shows that high-resolution in-beam γγ-ray spectroscopy is possible with new generation Ge arrays for reactions induced by rare-isotope beams on the level of a few μμb of cross section.

Inverse-kinematics proton scattering from 42,44^{42,44}S, 41,43^{41,43}P and the collapse of the N=28N=28 major shell closure

Excited states of the neutron-rich isotopes 42,44^{42,44}S and 41,43^{41,43}P have been studied via inverse-kinematics proton scattering from a liquid hydrogen target, using the GRETINA γγ-ray tracking array to extract inelastic scattering cross sections. Deformation lengths of the 21+2^+_1 excitations in 42,44^{42,44}S have been determined and, when combined with deformation lengths determined with electromagnetic probes, yield the ratio of neutron-to-proton matrix elements Mn/MpM_n/M_p for the 21+2^+_1 excitations in these nuclei. The present results for 41,43^{41,43}P(p,p′)(p,p') are used to compare two shell model interactions, SDPF-U and SDPF-MU. As in a recent study of 42^{42}Si, the present results on 41,43^{41,43}P favor the SDPF-MU interaction.

Two-neutron knockout as a probe of the composition of states in 22^{22}Mg, 23^{23}Al, and 24^{24}Si

Simpson and Tostevin proposed that the width and shape of exclusive parallel momentum distributions of the A-2 residue in direct two-nucleon knockout reactions carry a measurable sensitivity to the nucleon single-particle configurations and their couplings within the wave functions of exotic nuclei. We report here on the first benchmarks and use of this new spectroscopic tool. Exclusive parallel momentum distributions for states in the neutron-deficient nuclei 22^{22}Mg, 23^{23}Al, and 24^{24}Si populated in such direct two-neutron removal reactions were extracted and compared to predictions combining eikonal reaction theory and shell-model calculations. For the well-known 22^{22}Mg and 23^{23}Al nuclei, measurements and calculations were found to agree, supporting the dependence of the parallel momentum distribution width on the angular momentum composition of the shell-model two-neutron amplitudes. In 24^{24}Si, a level at 3439(9) keV, of relevance for the important 23^{23}Al(p,γγ)24^{24}Si astrophysical reaction rate, was confirmed to be the 22+2^+_2 state, while the 41+4^+_1 state, expected to be strongly populated in two-neutron knockout, was not observed. This puzzle is resolved by theoretical considerations of the Thomas-Ehrman shift, which also suggest that a previously reported 3471-keV state in 24^{24}Si is in fact the (02+0^+_2) level with one of the largest experimental mirror-energy shifts ever observed.

Electromagnetic properties of 21^{21}O for benchmarking nuclear Hamiltonians

The structure of exotic nuclei provides valuable tests for state-of-the-art nuclear theory. In particular electromagnetic transition rates are more sensitive to aspects of nuclear forces and many-body physics than excitation energies alone. We report the first lifetime measurement of excited states in 21^{21}O, finding τ1/2+=420−32+35(stat)−12+34(sys)τ_{1/2^+}=420^{+35}_{-32}\text{(stat)}^{+34}_{-12}\text{(sys)}\,ps. This result together with the deduced level scheme and branching ratio of several γγ-ray decays are compared to both phenomenological shell-model and ab initio calculations based on two- and three-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective field theory. We find that the electric quadrupole reduced transition probability of B(E2;1/2+→5/2g.s.+)=0.71−0.06 −0.06+0.07 +0.02\rm B(E2;1/2^+ \rightarrow 5/2^+_{g.s.}) = 0.71^{+0.07\ +0.02}_{-0.06\ -0.06}~e2^2fm4^4, derived from the lifetime of the 1/2+1/2^+ state, is smaller than the phenomenological result where standard effective charges are employed, suggesting the need for modifications of the latter in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. We compare this result to both large-space and valence-space ab initio calculations, and by using multiple input interactions we explore the sensitivity of this observable to underlying details of nuclear forces.
