Comprehensive broadband study of accreting neutron stars with Suzaku: Is there a bi-modality in the X-ray spectrum?

We present a broadband spectral analysis of accreting neutron stars using data from XIS and PIN onboard \emph{Suzaku}. From spectral fits of these sources with a single continuum model including a powerlaw and high energy cut-off, cyclotron lines (where required), we studied the correlation between various spectral parameters. Among 39 sources we studied, 16 are those where the existence of a cyclotron line is known in literature, and 29 need a cutoff energy. Among these 29 sources, 18 have cutoff energy bunched in a range of 3-10 keV while for 11 sources, it spreads over 12-25 keV. This bi-modal behaviour is not based on the specific nature of the systems being a Be XRB or supergiant HMXB, nor on different beaming patterns characterizing their X-ray emission (as inferred from simultaneous study of their pulse profiles). The broadband coverage of \emph{Suzaku} also shows that the cutoff energies saturate for higher values of cyclotron line energies - consistent with previous works in literature - for both the groups and the width of the cyclotron line show a weak correlation with the cyclotron line energy. We also find an anticorrelation with luminosity for both spectral index and folding energy, respectively. Unlike previous works, we did not detect any anticorrelation between X-ray luminosity and EW of K$α$ lines. Finally, we show that the EW and flux of the iron K$α$ line are smaller in SFXTs than classical NS-HMXBs. We discuss these findings in terms of different properties of stellar winds and accretion mechanisms.

Anisotropic Compact Objects in Modified $f(R,T)$ gravity

We obtain a class of anisotropic spherically symmetric relativistic solutions of compact objects in hydrostatic equilibrium in the $f(R,T) =R+2χT$ modified gravity, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $T$ is the trace of the energy momentum tensor and $χ$ is a dimensionless coupling parameter. The matter Lagrangian is $L_{m}=- \frac{1}{3}(2p_{t}+p_{r})$, where $p_r$ and $p_t$ represents the radial and tangential pressures. Compact objects with dense nuclear matter is expected to be anisotropic. Stellar models are constructed for anisotropic neutron stars working in the modified Finch-Skea (FS) ansatz without preassuming an equation of state. The stellar models are investigate plotting physical quantities like energy density, anisotropy parameter, radial and tangential pressures in all particular cases. The stability of stellar models are checked using the causality conditions and adiabatic index. Using the observed mass of a compact star we obtain stellar models that predicts the radius of the star and EoS for matter inside the compact objects with different values of gravitational coupling constant $χ$. It is also found that a more massive star can be accommodated with $χ<0$. The stellar models obtained here obey the physical acceptability criteria which show consistency for a class of stable compact objects in modified $f(R, T)$ gravity.

Dynamical Wormholes in Higher Dimensions and the Emergent Universe

Dynamical wormholes in higher dimensions which admit flat emergent universe (EU) model is presented. The EU model is free from initial singularity with other observed features of the universe. The basic assumption of EU model was that the present universe emerged out from a static Einstein universe. EU model originates from a dynamical wormhole, its throat is the seed of Einstein Static universe. A class of cosmological solutions in a higher dimensional flat universe is presented. A new shape function for closed universe is determined. The non-linear equation of state (EoS) corresponds to three types of cosmic fluids. The EoS parameters determine the cosmic fluids. The space-time dimensions determines the rate of change of a particular fluid that varies with the scale factor of a dynamically evolving universe with non-interacting fluids. Considering interaction at time $t > t_0$, among the three types of fluids it is possible to describe the observed universe satisfactorily. In a higher dimensional universe it is found that near the throat null energy condition (NEC) is violated, but away from the throat NEC is found to obey admitting the observed universe for a flat case. Another interesting aspect of the EU model is that it permits late accelerating phase. However, in asymptotic closed or open universe, flat emergent universe can be accommodated with NEC which is obeyed right from the throat to the present epoch. The tension at the throat of the wormhole is estimated which is found to depend on the initial size of the Einstein static universe and dimensions of the universe. It is interesting to note that NEC is not violated to accommodate dynamical wormholes for closed or open universe. Although exotic matter is required at the throat for the flat universe, no exotic matter is required for closed or open universe which encompass the emergent universe.

Emergent Universe Scenario in Modified Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We present modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity without matter in four dimensions which accommodates flat emergent universe (EU) obtained in Einstein's general theory of gravity with a non-linear equation of state. The EU model is interesting which is free from big-bang singularity with other observed features of the universe. It is assumed that the present universe emerged out from a static Einstein universe phase exists in the infinite past. To obtain a flat EU model we reconstructed mimetic modified $f(G)$-gravity ($G$ representing Gauss-Bonnet terms) without matter. The functional form of f(G)-gravity is determined which accommodates the early inflation and late accelerating phases without matter.

On the possibility of traversable wormhole formation in the Galactic halo in the presence of scalar field

In the paper we obtain traversable wormhole (TW) solutions in the Einstein gravity with a functional form of the dark matter in the galactic halo. The dark matter model is pseudo isothermal which is derived from modified gravity. For a given central density the possibility of TW is explored determining the shape functions. The null energy condition (NEC) and the weak energy conditions in the model is probed. We also study the existence of TWs considering homogeneous scalar field in addition to the dark matter halo in the galaxies. An interesting observation is that TW solutions exist even if NEC is not violated in the presence of scalar field.

Emergent Universe with Interacting fluids and Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics

We investigate the emergent universe scenario in the presence of interacting fluids. The non-linear equation of state (EoS) considered in the general theory of relativity for obtaining emergent universe is effectively a cosmological model with a composition of three fluids. In this paper we consider two models to realize viable cosmological scenarios, {\it viz.}, (i) a two-fluid model with interaction of a pressureless fluid with the fluid having the non-linear EoS needed for the emergent universe, and (ii) a three-fluid model with interaction among the three fluids which originate from the EoS of the emergent universe. It is found that realistic cosmological models in accordance with observations are not ruled out for both the above cases. We further show that the generalized second law of thermodynamics is found to hold good in the emergent universe with interacting fluids.

Is 4U 0114+65 an eclipsing HMXB?

We present the pulsation and spectral characteristics of the HMXB 4U 0114+65 during a \emph{Suzaku} observation covering the part of the orbit that included the previously known low intensity emission of the source (dip) and the egress from this state. This dip has been interpreted in previous works as an X-ray eclipse. Notably, in this Suzaku observation, the count rate during and outside the dip vary by a factor of only 2-4 at odds with the eclipses of other HMXBs, where the intensity drops upto two orders of magnitude. The orbital intensity profile of 4U 0114+65 is characterized by a narrow dip in the RXTE-ASM (2-12 \rm{keV}) light curve and a shallower one in the Swift-BAT (15-50 \rm{keV}), which is different from eclipse ingress/egress behaviour of other HMXBs. The time-resolved spectral analysis reveal moderate absorption column density (N$_{H}$ - 2-20 $\times$ $10^{22}$ atoms $cm^{-2}$) and a relatively low equivalent width ($\sim$ 30 \rm{eV} \& 12 \rm{eV} of the iron K$_α$ and K$_β$ lines respectively) as opposed to the typical X-ray spectra of HMXBs during eclipse where the equivalent width is $\sim$ 1 \rm{keV}. Both XIS and PIN data show clear pulsations during the dip, which we have further confirmed using the entire archival data of the IBIS/ISGRI and JEM-X instruments onboard \emph{INTEGRAL}. The results we presented question the previous interpretation of the dip in the light curve of 4U 0114+65 as an X-ray eclipse. We thus discuss alternative interpretations of the periodic dip in the light curve of 4U 0114+65.

Constraining Modified Chaplygin gas parameters

We investigate the evolution of a FRW model fuelled by a modified Chaplygin gas with an equation of state $p = Aρ-\frac{B}{ρ^α}$. An attempt is made here to constrain the free parameters of MCG model through the wellknown contour plot technique using observational data. The permissible range of values of the pair of free parameters are determined to study the viability of cosmological models \emph{vis-a-vis} observational results. Aside from allowing the desirable feature of \emph{flip} of the sign of deceleration parameter we also find that the transition from the decelerating to the accelerating phase occurs at relatively low value of redshift in accordance with the observational prediction that the acceleration is a recent phenomenon. It is found that the effective acoustic speed may become imaginary depending upon the initial conditions signalling that perturbations associated with instability sets in resulting in structure formation. As one considers more negative values of $A$ the \emph{flip} in sign is delayed resulting the density parameter to change fast. Again it is found from the contour plot that compatibility with observational results is admitted with a value of $A$ which is very near to zero or a small negative number.

Variations in the pulsation and spectral characteristics of OAO 1657-415

We present broad-band pulsation and spectral characteristics of the accreting X-ray pulsar OAO 1657--415 with a 2.2 d long \emph{Suzaku} observation carried out covering its orbital phase range $\sim$ 0.12--0.34, with respect to the mid-eclipse. During the last third of the observation, the X-ray count rate in both the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) and the HXD-PIN instruments increased by a factor of more than 10. During this observation, the hardness ratio also changed by a factor of more than 5, uncorrelated with the intensity variations. In two segments of the observation, lasting for $\sim$ 30--50 ks, the hardness ratio is very high. In these segments, the spectrum shows a large absorption column density and correspondingly large equivalent widths of the iron fluorescence lines. We found no conclusive evidence for the presence of a cyclotron line in the broad-band X-ray spectrum with \emph{Suzaku}. The pulse profile, especially in the XIS energy band shows evolution with time but not so with energy. We discuss the nature of the intensity variations, and variations of the absorption column density and emission lines during the duration of the observation as would be expected due to a clumpy stellar wind of the supergiant companion star. These results indicate that OAO 1657--415 has characteristics intermediate to the normal supergiant systems and the systems that show fast X-ray transient phenomena.

Observational Constraints on Modified Chaplygin Gas from Cosmic Growth

We investigate the linear growth function for the large scale structures of the universe considering modified Chaplygin gas as dark energy. Taking into account observational growth data for a given range of redshift from the Wiggle-Z measurements and rms mass fluctuations from Ly-$α$ measurements we numerically analyze cosmological models to constrain the parameters of the MCG. The observational data of Hubble parameter with redshift ($Z$) is also considered. The Wang-Steinhardt ansatz for growth index $γ$ and growth function $f$ (defined as $f=Ω_{m}^γ (a)$) are considered for the numerical analysis. The best-fit values of the equation of state parameters obtained here is employed to study the growth function $(f)$, growth index ($γ$) and state parameter ($ω$) with redshift $z$. We note that MCG satisfactorily accommodates an accelerating phase followed by a matter dominated universe.

Revisiting SWJ2000.6+3210 : A persistent Be X-ray pulsar ?

We present a detailed timing and spectral analysis of the Be X-ray binary SWJ2000.6+3210 discovered by the BAT Galactic plane survey. Two Suzaku observations of the source made at six months interval, reveal pulsations at ~ 890s for both observations with a much weaker pulse fraction in the second one. Pulsations are clearly seen in the energy band of 0.3-10 keV of XIS for both observations and at high energies up to 40 keV for the second observation. The broad band X-ray spectrum is consistent with a powerlaw and high energy cutoff model along with a hot blackbody component. No change in spectral parameters is detected between the observations. We have also analyzed several short observations of the source with Swift/XRT and detected only a few percent variation in flux around a mean value of 3:5 *10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The results indicates that SWJ2000.6+3210 is a member of persistent Be X-ray binaries which have the same broad characteristics as this source.

Observational Constraints on Modified Chaplygin Gas in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We present Cosmological models with modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) in the framework of Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of gravity both with and without detailed balance. The equation of state (EOS) for a MCG contains three unknown parameters namely, $A$, $α$, $B$. The allowed values of some of these parameters of the EOS are determined using the recent astrophysical and cosmological observational data. Using observational data from $H(z)-z$, BAO peak parameter, CMB shift parameter we study cosmologies in detailed-balance and beyond detailed-balance scenario. In this paper we take up the beyond detailed-balance scenario in totality and contribution of dark radiation in the case of detailed-balance scenario on the parameters of the EOS. We explore the effect of dark radiation on the whole range the of effective neutrino parameter to constrain matter contributing parameter $B$ in both the detailed-balance and the beyond-detailed balance scenario. It has been observed that greater the dark radiation less the matter contribution in the MCG in both the scenario considered here. In order to check the validity of beyond detailed balance scenario we plot supernovae magnitudes ($μ$) with redshift of Union2 data and then the variation of state parameter with redshift is studied. It has been observed that beyond detailed balance scenario is equally suitable in HL gravity with MCG.

Emergent Universe from A Composition of Matter, Exotic Matter and Dark Energy

A specific class of flat Emergent Universe (EU) is considered and its viability is tested in view of the recent observations. Model parameters are constrained from Stern data for Hubble Parameter and Redshift ($H(z)$ vs. $z$) and from a model independent measurement of BAO peak parameter. It is noted that a composition of Exotic matter, dust and dark energy, capable of producing an EU, can not be ruled out with present data. Evolution of other relevant cosmological parameters, viz. density parameter ($Ω$), effective equation of state (EOS) parameter ($ω_{eff}$) are also shown.

Observational Constraints on the Model Parameters of a Class of Emergent Universe

A class of Emergent Universe (EU) model is studied in the light of recent observational data. Significant constraints on model parameters are obtained from the observational data. Density parameter for a class of model is evaluated. Some of the models are in favour of the recent observations. Some models have been found which are not interesting yielding unrealistic present day value of the density parameter.

On the viability of some Emergent Universe models

A particular class of flat Emergent Universe scenario is studied in light of recent observational data. Observationally permissible ranges of values are obtained for the model parameters. The class of model studied here can accommodate different composition of matter-energy as cosmic fluid. It is found that recent observations favour some compositions over others while some compositions can be ruled out with some level of confidence.

Viscous cosmologies with variable $G$ and $Λ$ in $R^2$ gravity

We study evolution of a flat Friedmann-Robertson Walker universe filled with a bulk viscous cosmological fluid in a higher derivative theory of gravity in the presence of time varying gravitational and cosmological constant. Cosmological models admitting both power-law and exponential expansions are explored here in the presence of imperfect fluid described by full Israel and Stewart theory. We note some new and interesting cosmological solutions relevant for model building including present accelerating phase. In the case of power law, it is found that gravitational constant increases as the time evolves for a positive cosmological constant whereas it decreases for a negative cosmological constant. The evolution of temperature of a viscous universe is also determined.

Constraints on Exotic Matter for An Emergent Universe

We study a composition of normal and exotic matter which is required for a flat Emergent Universe scenario permitted by the equation of state (EOS)($p=Aρ-Bρ^{1/2}$) and predict the range of the permissible values for the parameters $A$ and $B$ to explore a physically viable cosmological model. The permitted values of the parameters are determined taking into account the $H(z)-z$ data obtained from observations, a model independent BAO peak parameter and CMB shift parameter (WMAP7 data). It is found that although $A$ can be very close to zero, most of the observations favours a small and negative $A$. As a consequence, the effective Equation of State parameter for this class of Emergent Universe solutions remains negative always. We also compared the magnitude ($μ(z)$) vs. redshift($z$) curve obtained in the model with that obtained from the union compilation data. According to our analysis the class of Emergent Universe solutions considered here is not ruled out by the observations.

Modified Chaplygin Gas and Constraints on its B parameter from CDM and UDME Cosmological models

We study Modified Chaplygin Gas (MCG) as a candidate for dark energy and predict the values of parameters of the gas for a physically viable cosmological model. The equation of state of MCG ($p=B ρ- \frac {A}{ρ^α} $) involves three parameters: $B$, $A$ and $α$. The permitted values of these parameters are determined with the help of dimensionless age parameter ($H_{o}t_{o}$) and $H(z)-z$ Data. Specifically we study the allowed ranges of values of B parameter in terms of $α$ and $A_{s}$ ($A_{s}$ is defined in terms of the constants in the theory). We explore the constraints of the parameters in Cold Dark Matter(CDM) model and UDME(Unified Dark Matter Energy) model respectively.

We study here the evolution of the gravitational and cosmological constants in the presence of radiation and matter domination era of the universe. We present here new cosmological solutions which are physically interesting for model building.

Inflation in Bianchi models and the cosmic no hair theorem in brane world

In this paper, the cosmic no hair theorem for anisotropic Bianchi models which admit inflation with a scalar field is studied in the framework of Brane world. It is found that all Bianchi models except Bianchi type IX, transit to an inflationary regime with vanishing anisotropy. In the Brane world, anisotropic universe approaches the inflationary era much faster than that in the general theory of relativity. The form of the potential does not affect the evolution in the inflationary epoch. However, the late time behaviour is controlled by a constant additive factor in the potential for the inflaton field.

Probability for Primordial Black Holes in Higher Dimensional Universe

We investigate higher dimensional cosmological models in the semiclassical approximation with Hartle-Hawking Boundary conditions, assuming a gravitational action which is described by the scalar curvature with a cosmological constant. In the framework the probability for quantum creation of an inflationary universe with a pair of black holes in a multidimensional universe is evaluated. The probability for creation of a universe with a spatial section with $S^{1}XS^{D -2}$ topology is then compared with that of a higher dimensional de Sitter universe with $S^{D -1}$ spatial topology. It is found that a higher dimensional universe with a product space with primordial black holes pair is less probable to nucleate when the extra dimensions scale factors do not vary in an inflating universe.
