A brief introduction to chiral perturbation theory, the effective field theory of quantum chromodynamics at low energies, is given.
The anti-kaon nucleon system close to threshold is analyzed in view of the new accurate DEAR kaonic hydrogen data. The calculations are performed using chiral SU(3) effective field theory in combination with non-perturbative schemes based on coupled channels. Several variants of such approaches are compared with experimental data and the differences in the results are discussed. Coulomb and isospin breaking effects turn out to be important and are both taken into account. The pole structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance close to the anti-kaon nucleon threshold is critically examined.
The hadronic decays eta -> pi pi pi, eta-prime -> pi pi pi and eta-prime -> eta pi pi are investigated within a U(3) chiral unitary approach. Final state interactions are included by deriving the effective s-wave potentials for meson meson scattering from the chiral effective Lagrangian and iterating them in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. With only a small set of parameters we are able to explain both rates and spectral shapes of these decays.
An investigation of the s-wave channels in meson-meson scattering is performed within a U(3) chiral unitary approach. Our calculations are based on a chiral effective Lagrangian which includes the eta' as an explicit degree of freedom and incorporates important features of the underlying QCD Lagrangian such as the axial U(1) anomaly. We employ a coupled channel Bethe-Salpeter equation to generate poles from composed states of two pseudoscalar mesons. Our results are compared with experimental phase shifts up to 1.5 GeV and effects of the eta' within this scheme are discussed.
We investigate the decays of pi^0, eta and eta-prime into two photons in an effective U(3) chiral Lagrangian approach without employing large N_c arguments. Tree level and one-loop contributions from the anomalous Wess-Zumino-Witten Lagrangian are calculated and the importance of eta--eta-prime mixing is discussed. Unitarity corrections beyond one-loop play an important role for the decays with off-shell photons and are included by employing a coupled channel Bethe-Salpeter equation which satisfies unitarity constraints and generates vector-mesons from composed states of two pseudoscalar mesons.
The dominant decay mode of the eta-prime, eta-prime -> eta pi pi, is investigated within the framework of infrared regularized U(3) chiral perturbation theory up to fourth chiral order and including one-loop corrections. We find reasonable agreement with experimental data and observe convergence of the chiral series.
We compare two different frameworks which have been proposed to include the eta' in chiral perturbation theory. The equivalence of these two approaches is shown both for the purely mesonic case and in the presence of the ground state baryon octet. The relation between the different sets of parameters in both Lagrangians is clarified.
The non-leptonic hyperon decays are analyzed up to one-loop order including all counterterms in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We use the exchange of the spin-3/2 decuplet resonances as an indication of which low-energy constants contribute significantly to these investigated processes . We choose four independent decay amplitudes that are not related by isospin relations in order to perform a fit for the pertinent low-energy constants and find a satisfactory fit both for s- and p-waves. The chiral corrections to the lowest order forms for the s-waves are moderate whereas there are significant modifications of the p-wave amplitudes.
The $σ$-terms are calculated at next-to-leading order in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory by employing a cutoff regularization. The results do not depend on the cutoff value to the order we are working . The baryon masses and $σ_{πN}(0)$ are used to perform a least-squares fit to the three appearing low-energy constants and predictions for the two $KN$ $σ$-terms and the strange contribution to the nucleon mass are made. The lack of convergence in the chiral expansions of these quantities when regularized dimensionally is overcome in the cutoff scheme. The $σ$-term shifts to the pertinent Cheng-Dashen points are calculated. We also include the spin-3/2 decuplet in the effective theory.
We analyze the effective low--energy field theory of Goldstone bosons and baryons chirally coupled to massive spin--1 fields. We use the electromagnetic baryon form factors to demonstrate the formal equivalence between the vector and the tensor field formulation for the spin--1 fields. We also discuss the origin of the so--called Weinberg term in pion--nucleon scattering and the role of $ρ$--meson exchange. Chirally coupled vector mesons do not give rise to this two--pion nucleon seagull interaction but rather to higher order corrections. Some problems of the formal equivalence arising in higher orders and related to loops are touched upon.
