Massive Two-Loop Heavy Particle Diagrams

We determine the master integrals for vertex and propagator diagrams that appear in effective field theories containing heavy fields. The integrals involve at least one heavy line, and the standard lines include an arbitrary mass scale. The evaluation is done analytically with modern techniques. We employ the methods of differential equations and dimensional recurrence relations to evaluate said integrals up to two-loop order.

Non-planar cusp and transcendental anomalous dimension at four loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We compute the nonplanar contribution to the universal anomalous dimension of the SU(4)-singlet twist-two operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at four loops through Lorentz spin 18. From this, we numerically evaluate the nonplanar contribution to the four-loop lightlike cusp anomalous dimension and derive the transcendental $ζ_3$ and $ζ_5$ parts of the universal anomalous dimension for arbitrary Lorentz spin in analytic form. As for the lightlike cusp anomalous dimension and the $ζ_5$ part of the universal anomalous dimension, we confirm previous results.

Operator product expansion for the non-local gluon condensate

We consider the short-distance expansion of the product of two gluon field strength tensors connected by a straight-line-ordered Wilson line. The vacuum expectation value of this nonlocal operator is a common object in studies of the QCD vacuum structure, whereas its nucleon expectation value is known as the gluon quasi-parton distribution and is receiving a lot of attention as a tool to extract gluon distribution functions from lattice calculations. Extending our previous study, we calculate the three-loop coefficient functions of the scalar operators in the operator product expansion up to dimension four. As a by-product, the three-loop anomalous dimension of the nonlocal two-gluon operator is obtained as well.

$Λ_c^{\pm}$ production in pp collisions with a new fragmentation function

We study inclusive $Λ_c^{\pm}$-baryon production in $pp$ collisions in the general-mass variable-flavor number scheme and compare with data from the LHCb, ALICE and CMS collaborations. We perform a new fit of the $c \to Λ_c^+$ fragmentation function combining $e^+e^-$ data from OPAL and Belle. The agreement with LHC data is slightly worse compared with a calculation using an older fragmentation function, and the tension between different determinations of $Λ_c^{\pm}$ production cross sections from the LHC experimental collaborations is not resolved. The ratio of data for $Λ_c^+$-baryon and $D^0$-meson production seems to violate the universality of $c$-charm quark to $c$-hadron fragmentation.

Theory for the FCC-ee : Report on the 11th FCC-ee Workshop

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The reports of 2018 and 2019 serve as white papers of the workshop results and subsequent developments.

$ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ hadroproduction in the parton Reggeization approach: Yield, polarization, and the role of fragmentation

The hadroproduction of the radially excited heavy-quarkonium states $ψ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ at high energies is studied in the parton reggeization approach and the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD at lowest order in the strong-coupling constant $α_s$ and the relative heavy-quark velocity $v$. A satisfactory description of the $ψ(2S)$ transverse-momentum ($p_T$) distributions measured by ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S}=7$ TeV is obtained using the color-octet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) extracted from CDF data at $\sqrt{S}=1.96$ TeV. The importance of the fragmentation mechanism and the scale evolution of the fragmentation functions in the upper $p_T$ range, beyond 30 GeV, is demonstrated. The $Υ(3S)$ $p_T$ distributions measured by CDF at $\sqrt{S}=1.8$ TeV and by LHCb at $\sqrt{S}=7$ TeV and forward rapidities are well described using LDMEs fitted to ATLAS data at $\sqrt{S}=7$ TeV. Comparisons of polarization measurements by CDF and CMS at large $p_T$ values with our predictions consolidate the familiar problem in the $ψ(2S)$ case, but yield reasonable agreement in the $Υ(3S)$ case.

Prompt-photon plus jet photoproduction with ZEUS at DESY HERA in the parton Reggeization approach

We study the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons associated with hadron jets in the framework of the parton Reggeization approach. The main improvements with respect to previous studies in the k_T-factorization framework include the application of the Reggeized-quark formalism, the generation of exactly gauge-invariant amplitudes with off-shell initial-state quarks, and the exact treatment of the gamma+R -> gamma+g box contribution with off-shell initial-state gluons. In this proceedings, the new data set, published recently by ZEUS collaboration is analyzed, were the distributions in photon and jet rapidity, transverse energy, azimuthal angle between photon and jet and proton momentum fraction are presented for different values of measured photon momentum fraction x_gamma <0.7, 0.8 and x_gamma>0.8$. The good agreement of measured distributions with our predictions is observed for the direct-dominating part of the data set. The comparison with the previous calculations in k_T-factorization, role of nonfactorizable higher-order and hadronization corrections is discussed.

Electroweak corrections to $Z$-boson hadroproduction at finite transverse momentum

We calculate the full one-loop electroweak radiative corrections, of ${\cal O}(α^2α_s)$, to the cross section of single $Z$-boson inclusive hadroproduction at finite transverse momentum ($p_T$). This includes the ${\cal O}(α)$ corrections to $Z+j$ production, the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ corrections to $Z+γ$ production, and certain QCD-electroweak interference contributions involving a single quark trace. We recover the QCD and purely weak corrections and study the QED corrections and the QCD-electroweak interference contributions for the first time. We also consider direct and resolved photoproduction in elastic and inelastic scattering. We present $p_T$ and rapidity distributions for the experimental conditions at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC and assess the significance of the various contributions.

High-precision $α_s$ measurements from LHC to FCC-ee

This document provides a writeup of all contributions to the workshop on "High precision measurements of $α_s$: From LHC to FCC-ee" held at CERN, Oct. 12--13, 2015. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from 15 methods where high precision measurements are (or will be) available. Those include low-energy observables: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) pion decay factor, (iii) quarkonia and (iv) $τ$ decays, (v) soft parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, as well as high-energy observables: (vi) global fits of parton distribution functions, (vii) hard parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, (viii) jets in $e^\pm$p DIS and $γ$-p photoproduction, (ix) photon structure function in $γ$-$γ$, (x) event shapes and (xi) jet cross sections in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (xii) W boson and (xiii) Z boson decays, and (xiv) jets and (xv) top-quark cross sections in proton-(anti)proton collisions. The current status of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, the improvements expected from LHC data in the coming years, and future perspectives achievable in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) with $\cal{O}$(1--100 ab$^{-1}$) integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ Z bosons and jets, and 10$^{8}$ W bosons and $τ$ leptons, are thoroughly reviewed. The current uncertainty of the (preliminary) 2015 strong coupling world-average value, $α_s(m_Z)$ = 0.1177 $\pm$ 0.0013, is about 1\%. Some participants believed this may be reduced by a factor of three in the near future by including novel high-precision observables, although this opinion was not universally shared. At the FCC-ee facility, a factor of ten reduction in the $α_s$ uncertainty should be possible, mostly thanks to the huge Z and W data samples available.

Inclusive B-meson production at small p_T in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme

We calculate the cross section for the inclusive production of B mesons in pp and ppbar collisions at next-to-leading order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme and show that a suitable choice of factorization scales leads to a smooth transition to the fixed-flavor-number scheme. Our numerical results are in good agreement with data from the Tevatron and LHC experiments at small and at large transverse momenta.

Stability of the Electroweak Vacuum: Gauge Independence and Advanced Precision

We perform a manifestly gauge-independent analysis of the vacuum stability in the Standard Model (SM) including two-loop matching, three-loop renormalization group evolution, and pure QCD corrections through four loops. All these ingredients are exact, except that light-fermion masses are neglected. We in turn apply the criterion of nullifying the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ Higgs self-coupling and its beta function and a recently proposed consistent method for determining the true minimum of the effective Higgs potential that also avoids gauge dependence. Exploiting our knowledge of the Higgs-boson mass, we derive an upper bound on the pole mass of the top quark by requiring that the SM be stable all the way up to the Planck mass scale and conservatively estimate the theoretical uncertainty. This bound is compatible with Monte Carlo mass quoted by the Particle Data Group at the $1.3σ$ level.

Prompt-photon plus jet associated photoproduction at HERA in the parton Reggeization approach

We study the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons associated with hadron jets in the framework of the parton Reggeization approach. The cross section distributions in the transverse energies and pseudorapidities of the prompt photon and the jet as well as the azimuthal decorrelation variables measured by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at DESY HERA are nicely described by our predictions. The main improvements with respect to previous studies in the $k_T$-factorization framework include the application of the Reggeized-quark formalism, the generation of exactly gauge-invariant amplitudes with off-shell initial-state quarks, and the exact treatment of the $γR\to γg$ box contribution with off-shell initial-state gluons.

Gluon- and Quark-Jet Multiplicities with NNNLO and NNLL Accuracy

We present a new approach to consider and include both the perturbative and the non-perturbative contributions to the multiplicities of gluon and quark jets. Thanks to this new method, we have included for the first time new contributions to these quantities obtaining next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic resummed formulas. Our analytic expressions depend on two non-perturbative parameters with a clear and simple physical interpretation. A global fit of these two quantities shows how our results solve a longstanding discrepancy in the theoretical description of the data.

Inclusive Charmed-Meson Production at the CERN LHC

We present predictions for the inclusive production of charmed hadrons at the CERN LHC in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme at next-to-leading order. Detailed numerical results are compared to data where available, or presented in a way to ease future comparisons with experimental results. We also point out that measurements at large rapidity have the potential to pin down models of intrinsic charm.

Production of one or two vector mesons in peripheral high-energy collisions of heavy ions

We study the production of spin-one mesons in high-energy heavy-ion collisions with peripheral kinematics in the framework of QED. The cross sections of the production of a single vector meson and of two different ones are presented. The explicit dependence on the virtuality of the intermediate vector meson is obtained within a quark model. The effect of reggeization of the intermediate vector meson state in the case of the production of two vector mesons is taken into account.

Differential Reduction Techniques for the Evaluation of Feynman Diagrams

Stable reduction methods will be important in the evaluation of high-order perturbative diagrams appearing in QCD and mixed QCD-electroweak radiative corrections at the LHC. Differential reduction techniques are useful for relating hypergeometric functions with shifted values of the parameters. We present a proposition relating the number of master integrals in the expansion of a Feynman diagram to the number of derivatives in a differential reduction.

Fully double-logarithm-resummed cross sections

We calculate the complete double logarithmic contribution to cross sections for semi-inclusive hadron production in the modified minimal-subtraction scheme by applying dimensional regularization to the double logarithm approximation. The full double logarithmic contribution to the coefficient functions for inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation is obtained in this scheme for the first time. Our result agrees with all fixed order results in the literature, which extend to next-next-to-leading order.

Inclusive B-Meson Production at the LHC in the GM-VFN Scheme

We calculate the next-to-leading-order cross section for the inclusive production of B mesons in pp collisions in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, an approach which takes into account the finite mass of the b quarks. We use realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions obtained from fits to e+e- data and compare results for the transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with recent data from the CMS Collaboration. We find good agreement, in particular at large values of pT.

Single jet and prompt-photon inclusive production with multi-Regge kinematics: From Tevatron to LHC

We study single jet and prompt-photon inclusive hadroproduction with multi-Regge kinematics invoking the hypothesis of parton Reggeization in t-channel exchanges at high energy. In this approach, the leading contributions are due to the fusion of two Reggeized gluons into a Yang-Mills gluon and the annihilation of a Reggeized quark-antiquark pair into a photon, respectively. Adopting the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin and Bluemlein prescription to derive unintegrated gluon and quark distribution functions of the proton from their collinear counterparts, for which we use the Martin-Roberts-Stirling-Thorne set, we evaluate cross section distributions in transverse momentum (p_T) and rapidity. Without adjusting any free parameters, we find good agreement with measurements by the CDF and D0 Collaborations at the Tevatron and by the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC in the region 2p_T/sqrt{S} < 0.1, where sqrt{S} is the hadronic c.m. energy.

Supersymmetric QCD corrections to $e^+e^-\to t\bar{b}H^-$ and the Bernstein-Tkachov method of loop integration

The discovery of charged Higgs bosons is of particular importance, since their existence is predicted by supersymmetry and they are absent in the Standard Model (SM). If the charged Higgs bosons are too heavy to be produced in pairs at future linear colliders, single production associated with a top and a bottom quark is enhanced in parts of the parameter space. We present the next-to-leading-order calculation in supersymmetric QCD within the minimal supersymmetric SM (MSSM), completing a previous calculation of the SM-QCD corrections. In addition to the usual approach to perform the loop integration analytically, we apply a numerical approach based on the Bernstein-Tkachov theorem. In this framework, we avoid some of the generic problems connected with the analytical method.

The Epsilon Expansion of Feynman Diagrams via Hypergeometric Functions and Differential Reduction

Higher-order diagrams required for radiative corrections to mixed electroweak and QCD processes at the LHC and anticipated future colliders will require numerically stable representations of the associated Feynman diagrams. The hypergeometric representation supplies an analytic framework that is useful for deriving such stable representations. We discuss the reduction of Feynman diagrams to master integrals, and compare integration-by-parts methods to differential reduction of hypergeometric functions. We describe the problem of constructing higher-order terms in the epsilon expansion, and characterize the functions generated in such expansions.

Timelike Single-logarithm-resummed Splitting Functions

We calculate the single logarithmic contributions to the quark singlet and gluon matrix of timelike splitting functions at all orders in the modified minimal-subtraction (MSbar) scheme. We fix two of the degrees of freedom of this matrix from the analogous results in the massive-gluon regularization scheme by using the relation between that scheme and the MSbar scheme. We determine this scheme transformation from the double logarithmic contributions to the timelike splitting functions and the coefficient functions of inclusive particle production in e+ e- annihilation now available in both schemes. The remaining two degrees of freedom are fixed by reasonable physical assumptions. The results agree with the fixed-order results at next-to-next-to-leading order in the literature.

Timelike small x Resummation for Fragmentation Functions

The status of small x resummation in the timelike kinematics is discussed. We present a general procedure to extract the large logarithms of x in the MS factorization scheme and to resum them in a closed form. New results for the doubly-logarithm-resummed coefficient functions will be reviewed. All our resummation formulae are in agrement with the fixed NNLO computations recently done by other groups in the \bar{MS} scheme.

Factorization breaking in high-transverse-momentum charged-hadron production at the Tevatron?

We compare the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of inclusive light-charged-particle production measured by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron with the theoretical prediction evaluated at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using fragmentation functions recently determined through a global data fit. While, in the lower p_T range, the data agree with the prediction within the theoretical error or slightly undershoot it, they significantly exceed it in the upper p_T range, by several orders of magnitude at the largest values of p_T, where perturbation theory should be most reliable. This disagreement is too large to be remedied by introducing additional produced particles into the calculation, and potentially challenges the validity of the factorization theorem on which the parton model of QCD relies. Clearly, a breakdown of the factorization theorem, being a fundamental property of QCD, would be extremely difficult to understand.

Inclusive b and b anti-b production with quasi-multi-Regge kinematics at the Tevatron

We consider b-jet hadroproduction in the quasi-multi-Regge-kinematics approach based on the hypothesis of gluon and quark Reggeization in t-channel exchanges at high energies. The preliminary data on inclusive b-jet and b anti-b-dijet production taken by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron are well described without adjusting parameters. We find the main contribution to inclusive b-jet production to be the scattering of a Reggeized gluon and a Reggeized b-quark to a b quark, which is described by the effective Reggeon-Reggeon-quark vertex. The main contribution to b anti-b-pair production arises from the scattering of two Reggeized gluons to a b anti-b pair, which is described by the effective Reggeon-Reggeon-quark-quark vertex. Our anaysis is based on the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription for unintegrated gluon and quark distribution functions using as input the Martin-Roberts-Stirling-Thorne collinear parton distribution functions of the proton.

$M(η_b)$ and $α_s$ from Nonrelativistic Renormalization Group

We sum up the next-to-leading logarithmic corrections to the heavy-quarkonium hyperfine splitting using the nonrelativistic renormalization group. On the basis of this result, we predict the mass of the $η_b$ meson to be $M(η_b)=9419 \pm 11 {(\rm th)} {}^{+9}_{-8} (δα_s) MeV$. The experimental measurement of $M(η_b)$ with a few MeV error would be sufficient to determine $α_s(M_Z)$ with an accuracy of $\pm 0.003$. The use of the nonrelativistic renormalization group is mandatory to reproduce the experimental value of the hyperfine splitting in charmonium.

Medium-modified DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions from large to small x

The unified description of fragmentation function evolution from large to small x which was developed for the vacuum in previous publications is now generalized to the medium, and is studied for the case in which the complete contribution from the largest class of soft gluon logarithms, the double logarithms, are accounted for and with the fixed order part calculated to leading order. In this approach it proves possible to choose the remaining degrees of freedom related to the medium such that the distribution of produced hadrons is suppressed at large momenta while the production of soft radiation-induced charged hadrons at small momenta is enhanced, in agreement with experiment. Just as for the vacuum, our approach does not require further assumptions concerning fragmentation and is more complete than previous computations of evolution in the medium.

Novel formulations of CKM matrix renormalization

We review two recently proposed on-shell schemes for the renormalization of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix in the Standard Model. One first constructs gauge-independent mass counterterm matrices for the up- and down-type quarks complying with the hermiticity of the complete mass matrices. Diagonalization of the latter then leads to explicit expressions for the CKM counterterm matrix, which are gauge independent, preserve unitarity, and lead to renormalized amplitudes that are non-singular in the limit in which any two quarks become mass degenerate. One of the schemes also automatically satisfies flavor democracy.

Orthopositronium lifetime at O(alpha) and O(alpha^3 ln(alpha)) in closed form

Recently, the O(alpha) and O(alpha^3 ln(alpha)) radiative corrections to the orthopositronium lifetime have been presented in closed analytical form, in terms of basic irrational numbers that can be evaluated numerically to arbitrary precision [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 193401 (2008)]. Here, we present the details of this calculation and reveal the nature of these new constants. We also list explicit transformation formulas for generalized polylogarithms of weight four, which may be useful for other applications.

Quark mixing renormalization effects in the determination of the CKM parameters |V_{ij}|

We briefly review existing proposals for the renormalization of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and study the numerical effects of several of them on the W-boson hadronic partial decay widths. We then use these results to evaluate the relative shifts on the CKM parameters |V_{ij}|^2 induced by the quark mixing renormalization effects, as well as their scheme dependence. We also discuss the implications of this analysis for the most precise unitarity test of the CKM matrix.

Two-loop electroweak fermionic corrections to sin^2 theta_{eff}^{b anti-b}

We present the first calculation of the two-loop electroweak fermionic correction to the flavour-dependent effective weak-mixing angle for bottom quarks, sin^2 theta_{eff}^{b anti-b}. For the evaluation of the missing two-loop vertex diagrams, two methods are employed, one based on a semi-numerical Bernstein-Tkachov algorithm and the second on asymptotic expansions in the large top-quark mass. A third method based on dispersion relations is used for checking the basic loop integrals. We find that for small Higgs-boson mass values, M_H ~ 100 GeV, the correction is sizable, of order O(10^{-4}).

AKK Update: Improvements from New Theoretical Input and Experimental Data

We perform a number of improvements to the previous AKK extraction of fragmentation functions for $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p/\bar{p}$, $K_S^0$ and $Λ/\barΛ$ particles at next-to-leading order. Inclusive hadron production measurements from $pp(\bar{p})$ reactions at BRAHMS, CDF, PHENIX and STAR are added to the data sample. We use the charge-sign asymmetry of the produced hadrons in $pp$ reactions to constrain the valence quark fragmentations. Data from $e^+ e^-$ reactions in regions of smaller $x$ and lower $\sqrt{s}$ are added. Hadron mass effects are treated for all observables and, for each particle, the hadron mass used for the description of the $e^+ e^-$ reaction is fitted. The baryons' fitted masses are found to be only around 1% above their true masses, while the values of the mesons' fitted masses have the correct order of magnitude. Large $x$ resummation is applied in the coefficient functions of the $e^+ e^-$ reactions, and also in the evolution of the fragmentation functions, which in most cases results in a significant reduction of the minimized $χ^2$. To further exploit the data, all published normalization errors are incorporated via a correlation matrix.

Strong-Coupling Constant at Three Loops in Momentum Subtraction Scheme

In this paper we compute the three-loop corrections to the $β$ function in a momentum subtraction (MOM) scheme with a massive quark. The calculation is performed in the background field formalism applying asymptotic expansions for small and large momenta. Special emphasis is devoted to the relation between the coupling constant in the MOM and $\overline{\rm{MS}}$ schemes as well as their ability to describe the phenomenon of decoupling. It is demonstrated by an explicit comparison that the $\overline{\rm{MS}}$ scheme can be consistently used to relate the values of the MOM-scheme strong-coupling constant in the energy regions higher and lower than the massive-quark production threshold. This procedure obviates the necessity to know the full mass dependence of the MOM $β$ function and clearly demonstrates the equivalence of both schemes for the description of physics outside the threshold region.

Collinear Subtractions in Hadroproduction of Heavy Quarks

We present a detailed discussion of the collinear subtraction terms needed to establish a massive variable-flavour-number scheme for the one-particle inclusive production of heavy quarks in hadronic collisions. The subtraction terms are computed by convoluting appropriate partonic cross sections with perturbative parton distribution and fragmentation functions relying on the method of mass factorization. We find (with one minor exception) complete agreement with the subtraction terms obtained in a previous publication by comparing the zero-mass limit of a fixed-order calculation with the genuine massles results in the MSbar scheme. This presentation will be useful for extending the massive variable-flavour-number scheme to other processes.

Fragmentation Functions for Light Charged Hadrons with Complete Quark Flavour Separation

We present new sets of next-to-leading order fragmentation functions describing the production of charged pions, kaons and protons from the gluon and from each of the quarks, obtained by fitting to all relevant data sets from e+ e- annihilation. The individual light quark flavour fragmentation functions are obtained phenomenologically for the first time by including in the data the light quark tagging probabilities obtained by the OPAL Collaboration.

Generalizing the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions to the Smallest x Values

An approach which unifies the Double Logarithmic Approximation at small x and the leading order DGLAP evolution of fragmentation functions at large x is presented. Hadroproduction of D and B mesons in a massive VFNS

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive hadroproduction of D and B mesons as a function of the transverse momentum and the rapidity in a massive variable flavor number scheme. We compare our numerical results with recent data from the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron for the production of D^0, D^{*+}, D^+, and D_s^+ mesons at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{S} = 1.96$ TeV and find reasonably good agreement with the measured cross sections.

Reconciling open charm production at the Fermilab Tevatron with QCD

We study the inclusive hadrodroduction of D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, and D_s^+ mesons at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics endowed with universal non-perturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) fitted to e^+e^- annihilation data from CERN LEP1. Working in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, we resum the large logarithms through the evolution of the FFs and, at the same time, retain the full dependence on the charm-quark mass without additional theoretical assumptions. In this way, the cross section distributions in transverse momentum recently measured by the CDF Collaboration in run II at the Fermilab Tevatron are described within errors.

Resummation of Soft Gluon Logarithms in the DGLAP Evolution of Fragmentation Functions

We define a general scheme for the evolution of fragmentation functions which resums both soft gluon logarithms and mass singularities in a consistent manner and to any order, and requires no additional theoretical assumptions. Using the Double Logarithmic Approximation and the known perturbative results for the splitting functions, we present our scheme with the complete contribution from the double logarithms, being the largest soft gluon logarithms. We show that the resulting approximation is more complete than the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation even with the fixed order contribution calculated to leading order only, and find, after using it to fit quark and gluon fragmentation functions to experimental data, that this approximation in our scheme gives a good description of the data from the largest x_p values to the peak region in xi=ln (1/x_p), in contrast to other approximations. In addition, we develop a treatment of hadron mass effects which gives additional improvements at large xi.

Inclusive Production of Single Hadrons with Finite Transverse Momenta in Deep-Inelastic Scattering at Next-to-Leading Order

We calculate the cross section for the inclusive production of single hadrons with finite transverse momenta in deep-inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order (NLO), i.e. through O(alpha_s^2), in the parton model of QCD endowed with non-perturbative parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs). The NLO correction is found to produce a sizeable enhancement in cross section, of up to one order of magnitude, bringing the theoretical prediction to good agreement with recent measurements for neutral pions and charged hadrons at DESY HERA. This provides a useful test for the universality and the scaling violations of the FFs predicted by the factorization theorem. Such comparisons can also be used to constrain the gluon PDF of the proton.

J/psi plus jet associated production in two-photon collisions at next-to-leading order

We calculate the cross section of J/psi plus jet inclusive production in gamma gamma collisions at next-to-leading order within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) focusing on direct photoproduction. Apart from direct J/psi production, we also include the feed-down from directly-produced chi_{cJ} and psi' mesons. Apart from direct J/psi production, we also include the feed-down from directly-produced chi_{cJ} and psi' mesons. We discuss the analytical calculation, in particular the treatment of the various types of singularities and the NRQCD operator renormalization, in some detail. We present theoretical predictions for the future e^+e^- linear collider TESLA, taking into account both brems- and beamstrahlung.

Potential NRQCD and Heavy-Quarkonium Spectrum at Next-to-Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order

The next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N^3LO) Hamiltonian of potential nonrelativistic QCD is derived. The complete matching of the Hamiltonian and the contribution from the ultrasoft dynamical gluons relevant for perturbative bound-state calculations is performed including one-, two-, and three-loop contributions. The threshold expansion is used to disentangle and match contributions of different scales in the effective-theory calculations. As a physical application, the heavy-quarkonium spectrum is obtained at N^3LO for the case of vanishing QCD beta function. Our results set the stage for a full N^3LO analysis of the heavy-quarkonium system.

J/psi plus dijet associated production in two-photon collisions

We study the production of a J/psi meson in association with one or two jets in gamma gamma collisions concentrating on the direct-photon contribution, which is expected to be dominant for large J/psi-meson transverse momentum and/or large dijet invariant mass. We work at leading order in the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD and include all relevant colour-octet processes. We present distributions in J/psi-meson transverse momentum and rapidity appropriate for CERN LEP2, a future e^+e^- linear collider, and a possible gamma gamma collider mode of the latter. In the case of the e^+e^- linear collider, we assume the beamstrahlung spectrum appropriate for DESY TESLA.

Effective Mass Scale of New Physics in the Absence of the Higgs Boson

We consider a hypothetical scenario in which the Higgs boson is absent, and attempt to constrain the mass scale Lambda of the new physics that would take its place. Using recent measurements of sin^2(theta_eff^lept) and M_W, we show that, in a class of theories characterized by simple conditions, the upper bound on Lambda is close to or smaller than the SM upper bound on M_H, while in the complementary class Lambda is not restricted by our considerations. The issue of fine-tuning when Lambda is large is briefly discussed. As a by-product of our considerations, we discuss the usefulness and important properties of a radiative correction, Delta r_eff, that directly links sin^2(theta_eff^lept) with alpha, G_mu, and M_Z.

Prospects of Measuring General Higgs Couplings at e^+e^- Linear Colliders

We examine how accurately the general HZV couplings, with V=Z,gamma, may be determined by studying e^+e^- --> Hff-bar processes at future e^+e^- linear colliders. By using the optimal-observable method, which makes use of all available experimental information, we find out which combinations of the various HZV coupling terms may be constrained most efficiently with high luminosity. We also assess the benefits of measuring the tau-lepton helicities, identifying the bottom-hadron charges, polarizing the electron beam and running at two different collider energies. The HZZ couplings are generally found to be well constrained, even without these options, while the HZ-gamma couplings are not. The constraints on the latter may be significantly improved by beam polarization.

Testing the Universality of Fragmentation Functions

Using fragmentation functions for charged pions, charged kaons, and (anti)protons recently extracted from experimental data of e^+e^- annihilation at the Z-boson resonance and at centre-of-mass energy root(s) = 29 GeV, we perform a global study of inclusive charged-hadron production in p anti-p, gamma p, and gamma gamma collisions at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics. Comparisons of our results with p anti-p data from CERN S p anti-p S and the Fermilab Tevatron, gamma p data from DESY HERA, and gamma gamma data from CERN LEP2 allow us to test the universality of the fragmentation functions predicted by the factorization theorem. Furthermore, we perform comparisons with (e^+e^-)-annihilation data from LEP2 so as to test the scaling violations predicted by the Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations.

Inclusive J/psi and psi(2S) Production from B Decay in p p-bar Collisions

Using information on B-meson fragmentation functions from CERN LEP 1 and adopting the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism proposed by Bodwin, Braaten, and Lepage, we predict the transverse-momentum distribution of J/psi mesons originating from the inclusive decays of b hadrons produced in p p-bar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. We determine the relevant colour-octet charmonium matrix elements from fits to CDF data on prompt charmonium hadroproduction and to CLEO data on charmonium production from B-meson decay. Our predictions are found to agree well with recent CDF and D0 data.

Large-p_T Inclusive pi^0 Cross Sections and Next-to-Leading-Order QCD Predictions

We review the phenomenology of pi^0 production at large transverse momentum in proton-induced collisions. Uncertainties in the next-to-leading-order predictions of Quantum Chromodynamics are discussed. The comparison with data reveals that the disagreement between theory and experiment lies essentially in an overall normalization factor. The situation for pi^0 production is contrasted with that of prompt-photon production in hadronic collisions.

Effective QCD Interactions of CP-odd Higgs Bosons at Three Loops

In the virtual presence of a heavy quark t, the interactions of a CP-odd scalar boson A, with mass M_A << 2M_t, with gluons and light quarks can be described by an effective Lagrangian. We analytically derive the coefficient functions of the respective physical operators to three loops in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), adopting the modified minimal-subtraction (MS-bar) scheme of dimensional regularization. Special attention is paid to the proper treatment of the gamma_5 matrix and the Levi-Civita epsilon tensor in D dimensions. In the case of the effective ggA coupling, we find agreement with an all-order prediction based on a low-energy theorem in connection with the Adler-Bardeen non-renormalization theorem. This effective Lagrangian allows us to analytically evaluate the next-to-leading QCD correction to the A -> gg partial decay width by considering massless diagrams. For M_A = 100GeV, the resulting correction factor reads 1+(221/12)alpha_s^(5)(M_A)/pi +165.9(alpha_s^(5)(M_A)/pi)^2 approx 1+0.68+0.23. We compare this result with predictions based on various scale-optimization methods.

Inclusive B-Meson Production in e^+ e^- and p p-bar Collisions

We provide nonperturbative fragmentation functions for B mesons, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS-bar factorization scheme with five massless quark flavors. They are determined by fitting the fractional energy distribution of B mesons inclusively produced in e^+ e^- annihilation at CERN LEP1. Theoretical predictions for the inclusive production of B mesons with high transverse momenta in p p-bar scattering obtained with these fragmentation functions nicely agree, both in shape and normalization, with data recently taken at the Fermilab Tevatron.

Large-p_T Photoproduction of D^*+- Mesons in ep Collisions

The cross section for the inclusive photoproduction of large-p_T D^*+- mesons is calculated at next-to-leading order, adopting different approaches to describe the fragmentation of charm quarks into D^*+- mesons. We treat the charm quark according to the massless factorization scheme, where it is assumed to be one of the active flavours inside the proton and the photon. We present inclusive single-particle distributions in transverse momentum and rapidity, including the contributions due to both direct and resolved photons. We compare and assess the various implementations of fragmentation. We argue that, in the high-p_T regime, a particularly realistic description can be obtained by convoluting the Altarelli-Parisi-evolved fragmentation functions of Peterson et al. with the hard-scattering cross sections of massless partons where the factorization of the collinear singularities associated with final-state charm quarks is converted to the massive-charm scheme. The predictions thus obtained agree well with recent experimental data by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at DESY HERA.

Predictions for D^*+- Photoproduction at HERA with New Fragmentation Functions from LEP1

We present new sets of nonperturbative fragmentation functions for D^*+- mesons, both at leading and next-to-leading order in the MS-bar factorization scheme with five massless quark flavors. They are determined by fitting the latest OPAL and ALEPH data on inclusive D^*+- production in e^+e^- annihilation. We take the charm-quark fragmentation function to be of the form proposed by Peterson et al. and thus obtain new values of the epsilon_c parameter, which are specific for our choice of factorization scheme. With these fragmentation functions, recent data on inclusive D^*+- photoproduction in ep collisions at HERA are reasonably well reproduced.

Dispersion Relations in Loop Calculations

These lecture notes give a pedagogical introduction to the use of dispersion relations in loop calculations. We first derive dispersion relations which allow us to recover the real part of a physical amplitude from the knowledge of its absorptive part along the branch cut. In perturbative calculations, the latter may be constructed by means of Cutkosky's rule, which is briefly discussed. For illustration, we apply this procedure at one loop to the photon vacuum-polarization function induced by leptons as well as to the $γf\bar f$ vertex form factor generated by the exchange of a massive vector boson between the two fermion legs. We also show how the hadronic contribution to the photon vacuum polarization may be extracted from the total cross section of hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation measured as a function of energy. Finally, we outline the application of dispersive techniques at the two-loop level, considering as an example the bosonic decay width of a high-mass Higgs boson.

Inclusive Hadron Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order

We study inclusive charged-hadron production in collisions of quasireal photons at NLO in perturbative QCD, using fragmentation functions recently extracted from PEP and LEP1 data. We superimpose the direct (DD), single-resolved (DR), and double-resolved (RR) gamma-gamma channels. First, we confront existing data taken by TASSO at PETRA and by MARK II at PEP with our NLO calculations. We also make comparisons with the neutral-kaon to charged-hadron ratio measured by MARK II. Then, we present NLO predictions for LEP2, a next-generation e+e- linear collider (NLC) in the TESLA design, and a Compton collider obtained by converting a NLC. We analyze transverse-momentum and rapidity spectra with regard to the scale dependence, the interplay of the DD, DR, and RR components, the sensitivity to the gluon density in the resolved photon, and the influence of gluon fragmentation. It turns out that the inclusive measurement of small-p_T hadrons at a Compton collider would greatly constrain the gluon density of the photon and the gluon fragmentation function.

Dependence of Electroweak Parameters on the Definition of the Top-Quark Mass

The QCD corrections to electroweak parameters depend on the renormalization scheme and scales used to define the top-quark mass. We analyze these dependences for the W-boson mass predicted via Delta r to O(alpha alpha_s) and O(alpha alpha_s^2) in the on-shell and MS-bar schemes. These variations provide us with a hint on the magnitude of the unknown higher-order QCD effects and contribute to the theoretical error of the prediction.

Large-$p_\perp$ Heavy-Quark Production in Two-Photon Collisions

The next-to-leading-order (NLO) cross section for the production of heavy quarks at large transverse momenta ($p_\perp$) in $γγ$ collisions is calculated with perturbative fragmentation functions (PFF's). This approach allows for a resummation of terms $\proptoα_s\ln(p_\perp^2/m^2)$ which arise in NLO from collinear emission of gluons by heavy quarks at large $p_\perp$ or from almost collinear branching of photons or gluons into heavy-quark pairs. We present single-inclusive distributions in $p_\perp$ and rapidity including direct and resolved photons for $γγ$ production of heavy quarks at $e^+e^-$ colliders and at high-energy $γγ$ colliders. The results are compared with the fixed-order calculation for $m$ finite including QCD radiative corrections. The two approaches differ in the definitions and relative contributions of the direct and resolved terms, but essentially agree in their sum. The resummation of the $α_s \ln(p_\perp^2/m^2)$ terms in the PFF approach leads to a softer $p_\perp$ distribution and to a reduced sensitivity to the choice of the renormalization and factorization scales.

Pion and Kaon Production in $e^+e^-$ and $ep$ Collisions at Next-to-Leading Order

We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions and kaons, both at leading and next-to-leading order. They are fitted to data on inclusive charged-hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation taken by TPC at PEP ($\sqrt s=29$~GeV) and to similar data by ALEPH at LEP, who discriminated between events with charm, bottom, and light- flavour fragmentation in their charged-hadron sample. We treat all partons independently and to properly incorporate the charm and bottom thresholds. Due to the sizeable energy gap between PEP and LEP, we are sensitive to the scaling violation in the fragmentation process, which allows us to extract a value for the asymptotic scale parameter of QCD, $Λ$. Recent data on inclusive charged-hadron production in tagged three-jet events by OPAL and similar data for longitudinal electron polarization by ALEPH allow us to pin down the gluon fragmentation functions. Our new fragmentation functions lead to an excellent description of a multitude of other $e^+e^-$ data on inclusive charged-hadron production, ranging from $\sqrt s=5.2$~GeV to LEP energy. In addition, they agree nicely with the transverse-momentum spectra of single charged hadrons measured by H1 and ZEUS in photoproduction at the $ep$ collider HERA, which represents a nontrivial check of the factorization theorem of the QCD-improved parton model.

CP Violation Induced by Heavy Majorana Neutrinos in the Decays of Higgs Scalars into Top-Quark, W- and Z-Boson Pairs

We analyze the possibility of $CP$ violation induced by heavy Majorana neutrinos in the decays of the Higgs particle into top-quark, $W$- and $Z$-boson pairs. In the framework of various ``see-saw" models with interfamily mixings, we find that Majorana neutrinos may give rise to sizable $CP$-odd observables at the one-loop electroweak order. Numerical estimates of these $CP$-violating effects that may be detected in high-energy colliders are presented.
