Collective modes in two-dimensional one-component-plasma with logarithmic interaction

The collective modes of a familiar two-dimensional one-component-plasma with the repulsive logarithmic interaction between the particles are analysed using the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA) combined with the molecular dynamic simulation of the equilibrium structural properties. It is found that the dispersion curves in the strongly coupled regime are virtually independent of the coupling strength. Arguments based on the excluded volume consideration for the radial distribution function allow us to derive very simple expressions for the dispersion relations, which show excellent agreement with the exact QCA dispersion over the entire domain of wavelengths. Comparison with the results of the conventional fluid analysis is performed and the difference is explained.

Cooling rate dependence of simulated ${\rm Cu_{64.5}Zr_{35.5}}$ metallic glass structure

Using molecular dynamics simulations with embedded atom model potential, we study structural evolution of ${\rm Cu_{64.5}Zr_{35.5}}$ alloy during the cooling in a wide range of cooling rates $γ\in(1.5\cdot 10^{9},10^{13})$ K/s. Investigating short- and medium-range order, we show that structure of ${\rm Cu_{64.5}Zr_{35.5}}$ metallic glass essentially depends on cooling rate. In particular, a decrease of the cooling rate leads to a increase of abundances of both the icosahedral-like clusters and Frank-Kasper Z16 polyhedra. The amounts of these clusters in the glassy state drastically increase at the $γ_{\rm min}=1.5\cdot 10^{9}$ K/s. Analysing the structure of the glass at $γ_{\rm min}$, we observe the formation of nano-sized crystalline grain of ${\rm Cu_2Zr}$ intermetallic compound with the structure of ${\rm Cu_2Mg}$ Laves phase. The structure of this compound is isomorphous with that for ${\rm Cu_5Zr}$ intermetallic compound. Both crystal lattices consist of two type of clusters: Cu-centered 13-atom icosahedral-like cluster and Zr-centered 17-atom Frank-Kasper polyhedron Z16. That suggests the same structural motifs for the metallic glass and intermetallic compounds and explains the drastic increase of the abundances of these clusters observed at $γ_{\rm min}$.

Simulated Cu-Zr glassy alloys: the impact of composition on icosahedral order

The structural properties of the simulated $\rm Cu_αZr_{1-α}$ glassy alloys are studied in the wide range of the copper concentration $α$ to clarify the impact of the composition on the number density of the icosahedral clusters. Both bond orientational order parameters and Voronoi tessellation methods are used to identify these clusters. Our analysis shows that abundance of the icosahedral clusters and the chemical composition of these clusters are essentially non monotonic versus $α$ and demonstrate local extrema. That qualitatively explains the existence of pinpoint compositions of high glass-forming ability observing in Cu-Zr alloys. Finally, it has been shown that Voronoi method overestimates drastically the abundance of the icosahedral clusters in comparison with the bond orientational order parameters one.

Pade spectroscopy of structural correlation functions: application to liquid gallium

We propose the new method of fluid structure investigation which is based on numerical analytical continuation of structural correlation functions with Pade approximants. The method particularly allows extracting hidden structural features of non-ordered condensed matter systems from experimental diffraction data. The method has been applied to investigating the local order of liquid gallium which has non-trivial stricture in both the liquid and solid states. Processing the correlation functions obtained from molecular dynamic simulations, we show the method proposed reveals non-trivial structural features of liquid gallium such as the spectrum of length-scales and the existence of different types of local clusters in the liquid.

Self-assembly of the decagonal quasicrystalline order in simple three-dimensional systems

For a three dimensional system we answer two questions, how simple a particle system might be to show the quasicrystal order and, what system features are the most important for quasicrystal formation? One-component system of particles with isotropic pair interaction is one of the simplest ones. We show that such system may be driven to three-dimensional decagonal (10-fold) quasicrystalline state just by purely repulsive, isotropic and monotonic interaction pair potential with two characteristic length scales; no attraction is needed. The second question we answer defining universal (nearly independent from the shape of the pair potential) effective integral parameters related to the first peak of the radial distribution function. The universality is illustrated by demonstrating the quasicrystalline order for a number of particle systems with absolutely different interaction potentials, both purely repulsive and attractive, but with the same effective integral parameters. Simple models like we study qualitatively describe effective interaction in molecular liquids, soft matter systems and metallic alloys for which quasicrystals have been experimentally observed.

How to quantify structural anomalies in fluids?

Some fluids are known to behave anomalously. The so-called structural anomaly which means that the fluid becomes less structures under isothermal compression is among the most frequently discussed ones. Several methods for quantifying the degree of structural order are described in the literature and are used for calculating the regions of structural anomalies. It is implied that all of the structural order determinations yield qualitatively identical results. However, no explicit comparison was made. This paper presents such a comparison for the first time. the results of some definitions are shown to contradict the intuitive notion of a fluid. On the basis of this comparison we show that the structural anomaly can be most reliably determined from the behavior of the excess entropy.

Fluid-solid phase transitions in 3D complex plasmas under microgravity conditions

Phase behavior of large three-dimensional complex plasma systems under microgravity conditions onboard the International Space Station is investigated. The neutral gas pressure is used as a control parameter to trigger phase changes. Detailed analysis of structural properties and evaluation of three different melting/freezing indicators reveal that complex plasmas can exhibit melting by increasing the gas pressure. Theoretical estimates of complex plasma parameters allow us to identify main factors responsible for the observed behavior. The location of phase states of the investigated systems on a relevant equilibrium phase diagram is estimated. Important differences between the melting process of 3D complex plasmas under microgravity conditions and that of flat 2D complex plasma crystals in ground based experiments are discussed.

Freezing and melting of 3D complex plasma structures under microgravity conditions driven by neutral gas pressure manipulation

Freezing and melting of large three-dimensional complex plasmas under microgravity conditions is investigated. The neutral gas pressure is used as a control parameter to trigger the phase changes: Complex plasma freezes (melts) by decreasing (increasing) the pressure. Evolution of complex plasma structural properties upon pressure variation is studied. Theoretical estimates allow us to identify main factors responsible for the observed behavior.

Structural properties of dense hard sphere packings

The structural properties of dense random packings of identical hard spheres (HS) are investigated. The bond order parameter method is used to obtain detailed information on the local structural properties of the system for different packing fractions $ϕ$, in the range between $ϕ=0.53$ and $ϕ=0.72$. A new order parameter, based on the cumulative properties of spheres distribution over the rotational invariant $w_6$, is proposed to characterize crystallization of randomly packed HS systems. It is shown that an increase in the packing fraction of the crystallized HS system first results in the transformation of the individual crystalline clusters into the global three-dimensional crystalline structure, which, upon further densification, transforms into alternating planar layers formed by different lattice types.
