Internet of Intelligence: A Survey on the Enabling Technologies, Applications, and Challenges

The Internet of intelligence is conceived as an emerging networking paradigm, which will make intelligence as easy to obtain as information. This paper provides an overview of the Internet of intelligence, focusing on motivations, architecture, enabling technologies, applications, and existing challenges. This can provide a good foundation for those who are interested to gain insights into the concept of the Internet of intelligence and the key enablers of this emerging networking paradigm. Specifically, this paper starts by investigating the evolution of networking paradigms and artificial intelligence (AI), based on which we present the motivations of the Internet of intelligence by demonstrating that networking needs intelligence and intelligence needs networking. We then present the layered architecture to characterize the Internet of intelligence systems and discuss the enabling technologies of each layer. Moreover, we discuss the critical applications and their integration with the Internet of intelligence paradigm. Finally, some technical challenges and open issues are summarized to fully exploit the benefits of the Internet of intelligence.

Blockchain and Fog Computing for Cyberphysical Systems: The Case of Smart Industry

Blockchain has revolutionized how transactions are conducted by ensuring secure and auditable peer-to-peer coordination. This is due to both the development of decentralization, and the promotion of trust among peers. Blockchain and fog computing are currently being evaluated as potential support for software and a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from banking practices and digital transactions to cyber-physical systems. These systems are designed to work in highly complex, sometimes even adversarial, environments, and to synchronize heterogeneous machines and manufacturing facilities in cyber computational space, and address critical challenges such as computational complexity, security, trust, and data management. Coupling blockchain with fog computing technologies has the potential to identify and overcome these issues. Thus, this paper presents the knowledge of blockchain and fog computing required to improve cyber-physical systems in terms of quality-of-service, data storage, computing and security.

Design Guidelines for Blockchain-Assisted 5G-UAV Networks

Fifth Generation (5G) wireless networks are designed to meet various end-user Quality of Service (QoS) requirements through high data rates (typically of Gbps order) and low latencies. Coupled with Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), 5G can achieve high data rates, enabling complex autonomous smart city services such as the large deployment of self-driving vehicles and large-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled industrial manufacturing. However, to meet the exponentially growing number of connected IoT devices and irregular data and service requests in both low and highly dense locations, the process of enacting traditional cells supported through fixed and costly base stations requires rethought to enable on-demand mobile access points in the form of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for diversified smart city scenarios. This article envisions a 5G network environment that is supported by blockchain-enabled UAVs to meet dynamic user demands with network access supply. The solution enables decentralized service delivery (Drones as a Service) and routing to and from end-users in a reliable and secure manner. Both public and private blockchains are deployed within the UAVs, supported by fog and cloud computing devices and data centers to provide wide range of complex authenticated service and data availability. Particular attention is paid tocomparing data delivery success rates and message exchange in the proposed solution against traditional UAV-supported cellular networks. Challenges and future research are also discussed with highlights on emerging technologies such as Federated Learning.

Trust-based Secure Routing in Software-defined Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

With the rising interest of expedient, safe, and high-efficient transportation, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have turned into a critical technology in smart transportation systems. Because of the high mobility of nodes, VANETs are vulnerable to security attacks. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of software-defined VANETs with trust management. Specifically, we separate the forwarding plane in VANETs from the control plane, which is responsible for the control functionality, such as routing protocols and trust management in VANETs. Using the on-demand distance vector routing (TAODV) protocol as an example, we present a routing protocol named software-defined trust based ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing (SD-TAODV). Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed software-defined VANETs with trust management.
