Functorial Test Modules

In this article we introduce a slight modification of the definition of test modules which is an additive functor ττ on the category of coherent Cartier modules. We show that in many situations this modification agrees with the usual definition of test modules. Furthermore, we show that for a smooth morphism f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y of FF-finite schemes one has a natural isomorphism f!∘τ≅τ∘f!f^! \circ τ\cong τ\circ f^!. If ff is quasi-finite and of finite type we construct a natural transformation τ∘f∗→f∗∘ττ\circ f_* \to f_* \circ τ.

Test module filtrations for unit FF-modules

We extend the notion of test module filtration introduced by Blickle for Cartier modules. We then show that this naturally defines a filtration on unit FF-modules and prove that this filtration coincides with the notion of VV-filtration introduced by Stadnik in the cases where he proved existence of his filtration. We also show that these filtrations do not coincide in general. Moreover, we show that for a smooth morphism f:X→Yf: X \to Y test modules are preserved under f!f^!. We also give examples to show that this is not the case if ff is finite flat and tamely ramified along a smooth divisor.

Bernstein-Sato polynomials and test modules in positive characteristic

In analogy with the complex analytic case, Mustaţă constructed (a family of) Bernstein-Sato polynomials for the structure sheaf OX\mathcal{O}_X and a hypersurface (f=0)(f=0) in XX, where XX is a regular variety over an FF-finite field of positive characteristic (see arxiv:0711.3794). He shows that the suitably interpreted zeros of his Bernstein-Sato polynomials correspond to the jumping numbers of the test ideal filtration τ(X,ft)τ(X,f^t). In the present paper we generalize Mustaţă's construction replacing OX\mathcal{O}_X by an arbitrary FF-regular Cartier module MM on XX and show an analogous correspondence of the zeros of our Bernstein-Sato polynomials with the jumping numbers of the associated filtration of test modules τ(M,ft)τ(M,f^t) provided that ff is a non-zero divisor on MM.

VV-filtrations in positive characteristic and test modules

Let RR be a ring essentially of finite type over an FF-finite field. Given an ideal a\mathfrak{a} and a principal Cartier module MM we introduce the notion of a VV-filtration of MM along a\mathfrak{a}. If MM is FF-regular then this coincides with the test module filtration. We also show that the associated graded induces a functor Gr[0,1]Gr^{[0,1]} from Cartier crystals to Cartier crystals supported on V(a)V(\mathfrak{a}). This functor commutes with finite pushforwards for principal ideals and with pullbacks along essentially étale morphisms. We also derive corresponding transformation rules for test modules generalizing previous results by Schwede and Tucker in the étale case (cf. arXiv:1003.4333). If a=(f)\mathfrak{a} = (f) defines a smooth hypersurface and RR is in addition regular then for a Cartier crystal corresponding to a locally constant sheaf on $\Spec R_{\acute{e}t}$ the functor Gr[0,1]Gr^{[0,1]} corresponds, up to a shift, to i!i^!, where $i: V(\mathfrak{a}) \to \Spec R$ is the closed immersion.

Dagger closure in regular rings containing a field

We prove that dagger closure is trivial in regular domains containing a field and that graded dagger closure is trivial in polynomial rings over a field. We also prove that Heitmann's full rank one closure coincides with tight closure in positive characteristic under some mild finiteness conditions. Furthermore, we prove that dagger closure is always contained in solid closure and that the forcing algebra for an element contained in dagger closure is parasolid.

On the behaviour of strong semistability in geometric deformations

Let Y→BY \to B be a relative smooth projective curve over an affine integral base scheme BB of positive characteristic. We provide for all prime characteristics example classes of vector bundles S\mathcal{S} over YY such that S\mathcal{S} is generically strongly semistable and semistable but not strongly semistable for some special fibre. This also provides new examples of the behaviour of Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities in geometric families.
