Electrically Active Domain Wall Magnons in Layered van der Waals Antiferromagnets

We study theoretically domain wall (DW) magnons-elementary collective excitations of magnetic DWs -- in easy-axis layered van der Waals (vdW) antiferromagnets, where they behave as normal modes of coupled spin superfluids. We uncover that, due to spin-charge coupling in vdW magnets, such DW magnons can be activated by voltage-induced torques, thereby providing a path for their low-dissipation and nanoscale excitation. Moreover, the electrical activation and the number of DW magnons at a frequency can be controlled by applying symmetry-breaking static magnetic field, adding tunability of signal transmission by them. Our results highlight that domain walls in vdW magnets provide a promising platform to route coherent spin information for a broad range of explorations in spintronics and magnetism.

Manipulating quantum impurity spins via dynamical modes of nanomagnets

Quantum impurity (QI) spins offer promising information processing and sensing applications by harnessing up to room-temperature quantum coherence. Challenged by the requirement of designing local coherent drives and improving sensitivity to various signals for such applications, the search of hybrid systems coupling QI spins with matter excitations have garnered significant recent interest. We propose and theoretically study a hybrid system that couples spin-1 QI with the dynamical excitations of nanomagnets, which are controlled by mechanisms uncovered in classical spintronics. We show that in such systems the QI-spin decoherence, due to coupling to thermally excited modes of the nanomagnet, can be designed across a wide range by exploiting the control over nanomagnet's mode ellipticity and the chiral nature of the coupling between the QI spin and nanomagnet. On the other hand, when activated electrically via voltage-induced torques, we demonstrate that QI spins can be driven coherently with large quality factors at room temperature by leveraging inherent non-linear precessional modes of the nanomagnet. Our results provide theoretical guidance for enabling unique quantum spintronic functionalities, such as local coherent driving of QI spins up to ambient conditions, and the design of nanomagnet-enhanced QI-based hybrid sensors.

Observing coherences with time-resolved photoemission

We discuss the potential creation and measurement of coherences in both dispersive solids and qubit-like single levels using current generation time- and angle-resolved photoemission technology. We show that in both cases, when both the pump and the probe overlap energetically with the coherent levels, and when the probe preferentially measures one level as compared to the other, that the time-resolved photoemission signal shows a beating pattern at the energy difference between the levels. In the case of dispersive bands, this leads to momentum-dependent oscillations, which may be used to map out small energy scales in the band structure. We further develop the two-sided Feynman diagrams for time-resolved photoemission, and discuss the measurement of decoherence to gain insight into the characteristics of qubit and dispersive bands.

Sensing chiral magnetic noise via quantum impurity relaxometry

We present a theory for quantum impurity relaxometry of magnons in thin films, exhibiting quantitative agreement with recent experiments without needing arbitrary scale factors used in theoretical models thus far. Our theory reveals that chiral coupling between prototypical spin>1/2 quantum impurities and magnons plays a central role in determining impurity relaxation, which is further corroborated by our experiments on nickel films interfaced with nitrogen-vacancy centers. Along with advancing magnonics and understanding decoherence in hybrid quantum platforms with magnets, the ability of a quantum impurity spin to sense chiral magnetic noise presents an opportunity to probe chiral phenomena in condensed matter.

Coupled spin-charge dynamics in magnetic van der Waals heterostructures

We present a phenomenological theory for coupled spin-charge dynamics in magnetic van der Waals heterostructures. The system studied consists of a layered antiferromagnet inserted into a capacitive vdW heterostructure. It has been recently demonstrated that charge doping in such layered antiferromagnets can modulate the strength, and even the sign, of exchange coupling between the layer magnetizations. This provides a mechanism for electrically generating magnetization dynamics. The central result we predict here is that the magnetization dynamics reciprocally results in inducing charge dynamics. Such dynamics makes magnetic van der Waals heterostructures interesting candidates for spintronics applications. To this end, we also show that these systems can be used to convert sub-THz radiation induced magnetization dynamics into electrical signals.

Terahertz radiation from accelerating charge carriers in graphene under ultrafast photoexcitation

We study the generation of THz radiation from the acceleration of ultrafast photoexcited charge carriers in graphene in the presence of a DC electric field. Our model is based on calculating the transient current density from the time-dependent distribution function which is determined using the Boltzmann transport equation within a relaxation time approximation. We include the time-dependent generation of carriers by the pump pulse by solving for the carrier generation rate using the Bloch equations in the rotating wave approximation (RWA). The linearly polarized pump pulse generates an anisotropic distribution of photoexcited carriers in the $k_x-k_y$ plane. The collision integral in the Boltzmann equation includes a term that leads to the \textit{thermalization} of carriers via carrier-carrier scattering to an effective temperature above the lattice temperature, as well as a \textit{cooling} term which leads to energy relaxation via inelastic carrier-phonon scattering. The radiated signal is proportional to the time derivative of the transient current density. In spite of the fact that the magnitude of the velocity is the same for all the carriers in graphene, there is still emitted radiation from the photoexcited charge carriers with frequency components in the THz range due to a change in the \textit{direction} of velocity of the photoexcited carriers in the external electric field as well as \textit{cooling} of the photoexcited carriers on a sub-picosecond time scale.
