Uniformly bounded Lebesgue constants for scaled cardinal interpolation with Matérn kernels

For $h>0$ and positive integers $m$, $d$, such that $m>d/2$, we study non-stationary interpolation at the points of the scaled grid $h\mathbb{Z}^d$ via the Matérn kernel $Φ_{m,d}$---the fundamental solution of $(1-Δ)^m$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove that the Lebesgue constants of the corresponding interpolation operators are uniformly bounded as $h\to0$ and deduce the convergence rate $O(h^{2m})$ for the scaled interpolation scheme. We also provide convergence results for approximation with Matérn and related compactly supported polyharmonic kernels.

Wiener-Hopf difference equations and semi-cardinal interpolation with integrable convolution kernels

Let $H\subset\mathbb{Z}^d$ be a half-space lattice, defined either relative to a fixed coordinate (e.g.\ $H = \mathbb{Z}^{d-1}\!\times\!\mathbb{Z}_+$), or relative to a linear order $\preceq$ on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, i.e.\ $H = \{j\in\mathbb{Z}^d : 0\preceq j\}$. We consider the problem of interpolation at the points of $H$ from the space of series expansions in terms of the $H$-shifts of a decaying kernel $ϕ$. Using the Wiener-Hopf factorization of the symbol for cardinal interpolation with $ϕ$ on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, we derive some essential properties of semi-cardinal interpolation on $H$, such as existence and uniqueness, Lagrange series representation, variational characterization, and convergence to cardinal interpolation. Our main results prove that specific algebraic or exponential decay of the kernel $ϕ$ is transferred to the Lagrange functions for interpolation on $H$, as in the case of cardinal interpolation. These results are shown to apply to a variety of examples, including the Gaussian, Matérn, generalized inverse multiquadric, box-spline, and polyharmonic B-spline kernels.

A new class of interpolatory $L$-splines with adjoint end conditions

A thin plate spline surface for interpolation of smooth transfinite data prescribed along concentric circles was recently proposed by Bejancu, using Kounchev's polyspline method. The construction of the new `Beppo Levi polyspline' surface reduces, via separation of variables, to that of a countable family of univariate $L$-splines, indexed by the frequency integer $k$. This paper establishes the existence, uniqueness and variational properties of the `Beppo Levi $L$-spline' schemes corresponding to non-zero frequencies $k$. In this case, the resulting $L$-spline end conditions are formulated in terms of \emph{adjoint} differential operators, unlike the usual `natural' $L$-spline end conditions, which employ identical operators at both ends. Our $L$-spline error analysis leads to an $L^{2}$-error bound for transfinite surface interpolation with Beppo Levi polysplines.

Radially symmetric thin plate splines interpolating a circular contour map

Profiles of radially symmetric thin plate spline surfaces minimizing the Beppo Levi energy over a compact annulus $R_{1}\leq r\leq R_{2}$ have been studied by Rabut via reproducing kernel methods. Motivated by our recent construction of Beppo Levi polyspline surfaces, we focus here on minimizing the radial energy over the full semi-axis $0<r<\infty$. Using a $L$-spline approach, we find two types of minimizing profiles: one is the limit of Rabut's solution as $R_{1}\rightarrow0$ and $R_{2}\rightarrow\infty$ (identified as a `non-singular' $L$-spline), the other has a second-derivative singularity and matches an extra data value at $0$. For both profiles and $p\in\left[ 2,\infty\right] $, we establish the $L^{p}$-approximation order $3/2+1/p$ in the radial energy space. We also include numerical examples and obtain a novel representation of the minimizers in terms of dilates of a basis function.

A study of the uniform accuracy of univariate thin plate spline interpolation

The usual power function error estimates do not capture the true order of uniform accuracy for thin plate spline interpolation to smooth data functions in one variable. In this paper we propose a new type of power function and we show, through numerical experiments, that the error estimate based upon it does match the expected order. We also study the relationship between the new power function and the Peano kernel for univariate thin plate spline interpolation.

Transfinite thin plate spline interpolation

Duchon's method of thin plate splines defines a polyharmonic interpolant to scattered data values as the minimizer of a certain integral functional. For transfinite interpolation, i.e. interpolation of continuous data prescribed on curves or hypersurfaces, Kounchev has developed the method of polysplines, which are piecewise polyharmonic functions of fixed smoothness across the given hypersurfaces and satisfy some boundary conditions. Recently, Bejancu has introduced boundary conditions of Beppo Levi type to construct a semi-cardinal model for polyspline interpolation to data on an infinite set of parallel hyperplanes. The present paper proves that, for periodic data on a finite set of parallel hyperplanes, the polyspline interpolant satisfying Beppo Levi boundary conditions is in fact a thin plate spline, i.e. it minimizes a Duchon type functional.
