Maximal non valuative domains

The notion of maximal non valuative domain is introduced and characterized. An integral domain R is called a maximal non valuative domain if R is not a valuative domain but every proper overring of R is a valuative domain. Maximal non valuative domains have at most four maximal ideals. Various properties of maximal non valuative domains are discussed. Conditions are given under which pseudo-valuation domains and maximal non pseudo-valuation domains are maximal non valuative domains.

On minimal ring extensions

Let RR be a commutative ring with identity. The ring R×RR\times R can be viewed as an extension of RR via the diagonal map Δ:R↪R×RΔ: R \hookrightarrow R\times R, given by Δ(r)=(r,r)Δ(r) = (r, r) for all r∈Rr\in R. It is shown that, for any a,b∈Ra, b\in R, the extension Δ(R)[(a,b)]⊂R×RΔ(R)[(a,b)] \subset R\times R is a minimal ring extension if and only if the ideal <a−b><a-b> is a maximal ideal of RR. A complete classification of maximal subrings of R(+)RR(+)R is also given. The minimal ring extension of a von Neumann regular ring RR is either a von Neumann regular ring or the idealization R(+)R/mR(+)R/\mathfrak{m} where m∈Max(R)\mathfrak{m}\in \text{Max}(R). If R⊂TR\subset T is a minimal ring extension and TT is an integral domain, then (R:T)=0(R:T) = 0 if and only if RR is a field and TT is a minimal field extension of RR, or RJR_J is a valuation ring of altitude one and TJT_{J} is its quotient field.
